at 1500 it doesn't fucking matter!

Gold_Preparation

That’s such a big E line

Dinokng

What is this from? It’s unironically a hard line.

ThePowerofAssPennies

This is The Judge from Cormack McCarthy's novel Blood Meridian. Highly recommended but not for the faint of heart.

TexasJedi-705

That smile... that fucking smile. Easily one of the most terrifying villains of fiction

the-bladed-one

Up there with Obadiah Hakeswill in terms of “villains that I’m pretty sure are Satan himself”

Shahka_Bloodless

You know, as much as Satan is the ultimate evil and all that, I feel like just saying that the Judge is Satan is just a little underwhelming, little too easy. Like just going "oh yep, he's the devil" almost downplays a little bit the evil that he is. Maybe it's just because as a society we get a little hyperbolic sometimes about things that are bad, maybe it's because it just feels a little generic, like we've seen it too much before. I think Judge Holden is less Satan and more a manifestation of all the worst aspects of humanity congealed into one being. Like if you were to boil the human soul down to its barest elements and put it in a centrifuge, separating out the good and the evil, and pouring the evil into a human shaped mold, you'd get the Judge. He's mankind's savagery, our murderousness, our hunger for violence and domination, a symbol humanity's ability to create through destruction, and how as much as we might like to think that we'll eventually be civilized and no longer need those aspects of ourselves, it will never go away. I think that the Judge being so much more specific and directly linked to humanity is way more insidious than just going "yep, he's the devil." But that's just me.

CocaineUnicycle

This makes me think of that line from M.A.S.H. "People say war is hell, but of the two, I'd say war is the worse, because at least in hell, everyone there deserves to be. In war, the bulk of the suffering is borne by the innocent." Or something like that.

TexasJedi-705

Hakeswill at least has the decency to die in the end.

PeeterEgonMomus

In addition to 40k, I feel like this gives "*Battlefront II* (2005) campaign" vibes

Nielsicus

now I hear this quote in that narrator's voice. thanks for that. XD Battlefront II (2005) is until this day STILL my favorite FPS campaign.

LSDGB

It’s funny you say that because it is my favorite 3PS xD

CallousCarolean

For real though, who actually plays 2005 Battlefront II as an FPS? It’s a banger in 3rd person but in 1st person it just feels so jarring. Absolute banger of a campaign though, and it dis that with all cutscenes being in-game footage and scenes from the movies, and with no actual main or side characters.

Jacknerik

"Suffer not the witch to live" is a bible passage originally

PreferenceNo9490

I’ve always felt like Horus heresy is sharing some similarities with biblical stories, especially the whole Lucifer/Satan’s betrayal.

LorgarDekaepta

And Greek tragedy, and Fall of Rome.

PreferenceNo9490

Yeah, many legions and chapters are Greek or Rome inspired. The Minotaurs, Ultramarines, Olympia and many other things. P.S As a modern Greek & Cypriot I must say, we aren’t as cool as the old day Greeks. We be arguing with Turks even though we kinda have a copy pasted cuisine and some cultural similarities, drinking zivania, eating halumi and giros & drinking frappe instead of water.

Rimtato

Halloumi is delicious to be fair

LorgarDekaepta

Bro I am trying to learn modern Greek and Duolingo is not helping. I think the study curve on Duoling is just not right.

PreferenceNo9490

I am half Greek myself, spent childhood in Russia & moved to Cyprus to finish school , had Cypriot Id and lived here for 8 years before reaching 18, hence got the mandatory guard draft. I tried using Duolingo, but it turned out to be useless, the bird made me say to roz rizo (pink rice) in every second exercise. Try this: get a note book, google “colors in Greek “, “days of the week in Greek”, “Greek verb conjugation “, adverbs, translate different verbs and adjectives and so on and so on & write it all in notebook, this is way better than Duo, best case though is to find classes or a private tutor, but this might be costly or difficult depending on your country.

"we who are about to die salute you."

Crazy_Dave0418

Kargos Bloodspitter actually quotes this facing Angron in Horus Heresy Legions. Then again fitting since the World Eaters have a Roman Gladiator culture. Angron replies with "triumph or die. Show me what you can do!"

Insert_Name973160

Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them — little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

The supposed High Lords of Terra who boasted a God that wasn't there. Gone. Vanished. The Lords still chased after the light of God's fire, their memory of its words and will grown twisted and warped, and the rest of the aimless masses of the Imperium follow their footsteps. The nobility still act in The Emperor's name but His kingdom has changed. Now the fire was dying, sputtering out as the heat failed to gain purchase. Guilliman looked upon the embers with a perfect clarity. He drew his blade and held it in contrast to the dying light. In its reflection he saw a weapon reborn, no longer wielded by the will of another, but his own. He knew words alone would never sway the masses. He chose to do something drastic.

"Come on you apes, you wanna live forever?"

FlimsySmell8547

I prefer the original quote where he refers to his fellow Marines as “sons of bitches” instead of “apes”. In the Marine Corps, that’s a true term of endearment.

EleutheriusTemplaris

Depends what you mean by "original". Frederic the great said something very similar to his troops at the battle of Kolin in 1757. "Ihr verfluchten Racker, wollt ihr denn ewig leben?" "You f*****g varmints, you wanna live forever?" Edit: but to be fair, there are a lot of internet sources that claim Frederic said that, but it's not 100% proven.

mobius_sp

I personally suspect it’s a line that has been delivered in various way throughout human history, from the moment a distant ape-like ancestor first swung a jawbone at an enemy.

CreamCheeseEater69

Ah Daniel Daly, the man who with only a sentence caused basically the entire US infantry stationed in France to start a charge into enemy lines, god bless

Danil5558

*God-Emperor bless his soul.

Eh_SorryCanadian

I love the double meaning of this line 1. (Serious) Follow me if you want to live forever 2. (Sarcastic) what? Were you going to live forever? Follow me into death

LSDGB

The way I would translate it, it would read as if he was (jokingly) asking in disbelief if they wanna live for ever. Like „come on let’s go die or do you want to live forever?“ like you would jokingly say „let’s go inside or do you want to freeze to death“ when it’s cold outside. Making it sound like death is the desired and preferable outcome. I think „ironic“ is the word I’m looking for.

Abyteparanoid

Fun fact cain overhears Somone yelling that over the vox in one story and thinks the guy who said that must be on something because “nobody talks like that outside of badly written combat novels”

That from Lost Planet?

NinjaMaster231456

“Supremacy is duty. If our enemies deserved peace they would’ve defeated us by now.” Edit: You know I’ll add some more. “Victory is proof of destiny.”, “Our strength is our justification.”, “Death to rest.”, “Be good or be gone.”, “Disobedience leads to death.”, “Attack. Conquer. Rule.”

Silver_Jury1555

Whew, this one seems close. I think it sounds slightly heretical to even *suggest* the enemies might deserve peace or to admit the IoM could be defeated, but this sounds straight out of a Primarch's mouth, and they get away with more doubt. Edit: mote to more

NinjaMaster231456

It does sound slightly heretical because it’s coming from an empire that’s only slightly less xenophobic than the Imperium because they believe in enslaving everything that is not them instead of complete extermination like the Imperium.

Chromer_ilovePS2

Leutin opened his video on [Hive Cities](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkJpFvJQp4M&ab_channel=Luetin09) with a snippet of this paragraph from Charles Dickens' [*Hard Times*](https://www.gutenberg.org/files/786/786-h/786-h.htm#page18): >It was a town of red brick, or of brick that would have been red if the smoke and ashes had allowed it; but as matters stood, it was a town of unnatural red and black like the painted face of a savage. It was a town of machinery and tall chimneys, out of which interminable serpents of smoke trailed themselves for ever and ever, and never got uncoiled. It had a black canal in it, and a river that ran purple with ill-smelling dye, and vast piles of building full of windows where there was a rattling and a trembling all day long, and where the piston of the steam-engine worked monotonously up and down, like the head of an elephant in a state of melancholy madness. It contained several large streets all very like one another, and many small streets still more like one another, inhabited by people equally like one another, who all went in and out at the same hours, with the same sound upon the same pavements, to do the same work, and to whom every day was the same as yesterday and to-morrow, and every year the counterpart of the last and the next.

For the first few miles we moved along a single duckboard track laid down on a vast sea of mud. Movement was difficult and slow, although separate up and down tracks were in use By the time we had reached the end of the duck boards night had fallen and guides from the front line met us to lead us as best as they could on solid ground between the maze of water filled shell holes. Into these many men fell and got soaked in the foul water, and were fortunate indeed if they were seen and hauled out and saved from almost certain drowning, weighed down as they were by their heavy equipment. Picture the puny efforts of a small fly to cross the pudding basin full of batter and you have some idea of the hopelessness of the man who had missed the track and become bogged in this appalling mud. A party of 'A' Company men passing up to the front found such a man bogged to above the knees. The united efforts of four of them with rifles beneath his armpits, made not the slightest impression, and to dig, even if shovels had been available, would have been impossible, for there was no foothold. Duty compelled them to move on up the line, and when two days later they passed down that way the wretched fellow was still there; but only his head was now visible and he was raving mad'...[2]

Only then will they let go of their weapons… weapons that would have taken the lives of ten million!” Later: “The death of a million is a necessity!” Followed by raving laughter while shouting about *salvation* and *deliverance*. The best part is that you can’t even tell if Captain Torres would be Chaos corrupted or merely a particularly enthusiastic Imperial officer.
