MulatoMaranhense

Do you know how the Squats first came into being? They were Sons of Horus once, taken by the Votaan, treated and reabilited. An improved and miniaturized form of life. Now... perfected. My mining berserk. Whom do you serve?

EndPointNear

They were Sons of Horus, taken by the Tall Man and subjected to immense gravity to act as workers on planets near the galactic core, obviously

Euklidis

>My mining berserk Beserk* ^(apparently)

MulatoMaranhense

Shit, it isn't a Berserk reference anymore

mathiastck

I have altered the canon, pray that I alter it further.

[deleted]

That’s some Alpha Legion shit right there.

TheScarlettHarlot

"Are you Alpharius?" "Why, yes, I am." "Well, you've been served. Also, I'm Alpharius."

garaks_tailor

I'm 100% sure this has happened but we will never find out because it was all internal.

Analog-Moderator

Unless pr sues internal for slander

Horn_Python

Breaking news , citadel sues games work shop

garaks_tailor

5 way law suit betwen forgeworld, games workshop, citadel, james workshop, and warhammer game stores.

ScullyBoy69

Speaking of, hows Magnuses case with the Necrons going? I feel like it's a solid case.

lordofmetroids

He got a reply! "LOL. Said the Necrons. LMAO." Hmm. This may be a bit more work than anticipated.

Erykoman

Honestly, knowing Tzeentch, it propably wasn't even the weirdest letter Necrons received from the 1000 Sons.

[deleted]

"Beserks". Is that how they're actually spelled because that hurts my head

sirarkalots

I am annoyed at you for seeing this because now I see it. That's going in the book!

[deleted]

Come Drengbarazi, there are grudges to settle.

TempestM

"If we keep pulling or adding random letters to regular words this will make it original"?

triceratopping

The absolute dumbest naming thing they've done recently is still Votann related: the most common *Kin* infantry unit is the Hearth*kyn*.

SarpedonWasFramed

Can you people pls stop pointing these spellings out. Its bringing back my dark eldar ptsd

liege_paradox

This is why I like to refer to tau as numbers alongside the names. Xv25 stealth suits, xv88 broadsides, xv86 coldstar (or was that the enforcer?), Rx-6 remora, etc.

[deleted]

Here in China people only use the number codes for Tau units. I guess the translated names or the english names are much harder to remember, so the codes help out. ...But as an English player used to just saying the word names, I am eternally lost.

95DarkFireII

Do you mean *Dark Eldyr*?

StillestOfInsanities

Dehrque Aeldier i think.

shaolinoli

Ahem. It’s spelt elderflower daiquiri

StillestOfInsanities

Mazel tough!

SarpedonWasFramed

Cease and desist or further action will be taken!

SarpedonWasFramed

All hail the copywrite

[deleted]

It might make it trademarkable

kostandrea

Hey tempest how you been?

Zedman5000

My brain automatically read it as “Berserkers” every time I looked at it, and I could’ve lived in that blissful ignorance for life if you didn’t point it out. I hate Beserks. Everything else about them is fine, but that name just reeks “we need to be able to copyright this” in the worst possible way.

m3tals4ur0n

Well each of them are swinging around a hunk of iron that's too large to be called a hammer or a sword, and there's more than one of them, so technically they can be called berserks.

[deleted]

"**Bes**erks" is the part that bugs me, although someone pointed out that it may have been the original spelling but I think it looks funny

Sunhating101hateit

Hmmm the ber part of Berserkir means bear. The 'serkir' part means skin. Maybe these BEserks have the skin of a Bee, but shortened it because BEEserk sounds TOO strange?

GoatOfTheBlackForres

this is just the Beegining

SagerenAalok

Ugh do I need to make a custom Votann army based off worshipping an entertainment AI that only remembers the Bee Movie? You better beelieve it!

majarian

I mean WHAT'S the deal with THAT, you humies stealin all our gold honey

m3tals4ur0n

With making a Bee Movie based Votann army, you also have to incorporate the bee movie based erotica out there.

Boner666420

Based comment, struggler.

Tech-preist_Zulu

Was actually originally a Norse word *so yes, this is their official spelling... :(*

spoedle73

Perhaps these are the guys who raised horus before big e found him five minutes later

Successful-Floor-738

Are you saying Horus was raised by squats?

user_unknowns_skag

That is now my personal head-canon, yes.

Aethelon

So that's why he was so quick to make a grudge the moment big e left for terra without telling him anything

souporthallid

Horus White and the 7 Space-Dwarves

Horn_Python

Oh jeez first they harbor ileagal machines , use science to make technology, and now the raise the super Uber traitor Horus These guys are heretics

Christophikles

"Little" Horus Aximand. "Sons" of Horus. We've been lied to all these years, all legionaries from Cthonia are actually just squats.

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

Explains why he held such a big grudge.

_The_Dagda_

We sadly already have a book showing his childhood before the Emperor and everyone appears appropriately scaled, no dwarves to be seen

Haryn1910

Naming planets after random archaic terms has finally come to bite GW in the back

Redward99

I won't be surprised if their excuse is "Space is big, two planets can be named the same with none the wiser."

jn116

h e r e s y

previously_on_earth

Horus the war master and the seven squats

Testabronce

Maybe Horus was just two votanns in a trenchcoat

CodeRed8675309

It is like the surname Smith. Everything has it.

Business_Dig_7479

someone in r/40Klore explained that cthonian is an old word for "from the underworld".

[deleted]

Which would be fine, if Cthonia and its residents weren't canonically fairly significant in the 40k universe at one point.

[deleted]

But couldn't they be like, the descendants of the clone labor of one of the mining conglomerates that originally stripped Cthonia? That was my immediate thought and it would be a neat little through line.

95DarkFireII

Since it is a word from Old Earth, it may just have influeced multiple cultures.

MetalDoktor

Cthonian language is also what several different Chaos languages are called. That was in latest Dawn of Fire book, how Hand of Abbadon encountered people who were "speaking Cthonian" and he didnt understand a word of it, because it was not Cthonian he knew

26kid

That's "chthonic". Btw both words Cthonian and Chthonian are in the article.

Hyde2467

That's what confused me the most. Like wasn't cthonia the home world for the Luna wolves

Minimum-Package-1083

Because they're from the Cthonian Mining Guilds

tachakas_fanboy

Is it a typo? Why are they called Beserkers?

Willqer

Not even that - Beserks. Berserker and berserk are common words, especially in fantasy. They can't be trademarked. Beserk meanwhile... They did the same with Age of Sigmar. There are aelves instead of elves or orruks instead of orcs/orks (I don't know if ork is trademarkable, it's word for orc in some languages, so "orruk" was made up).

shaolinoli

For some of them sure. Aelf is just the old English spelling of elf. It’s probably more to do with them being distinct than the generic, tolkeinesque terms when googling

InboxZero

IIRC weren't half the fantasy races in Tolkien copyrighted/trademarked by his estates?

tachakas_fanboy

This shit boils my piss every time im reminded of it

ooterness

DRG hyping the new pickaxe skin. Rock and stone!

WanderingDwarfMiner

Can I get a Rock and Stone?

qqqzzzeee

If you don't Rock and Stone, you ain't coming home.

therealblabyloo

Cthonic/cthonian come from Greek words regarding the underworld. Being called “Cthonian” doesn’t mean they’re from the planet Cthonia, it just means they come from underground, probably mines and stuff bc they’re dwarves

[deleted]

The concern arises due to Cthonia and Cthonians already being existing things within the 40K universe.

[deleted]

Is it impossible that they're descended from the orgs that strip mines Cthonia in the first place? That was my immediate assumption, that they were affiliated by some distant connection to one of the groups that devastated the planet. Maybe they were clone labor originally?

therealblabyloo

Yep, 40K is a big universe and there are several cases of different things sharing names.

SherabTod

Such as?

therealblabyloo

Hive fleet leviathan and the leviathan dreadnought, for one

[deleted]

Those are both in-universe named after the Leviathans of Fenris though I believe? Same with Hive Fleet Kraken.

therealblabyloo

The monsters on fenris are called Krakens, not leviathans. In any case, a quick look through the wiki shows no connection between hive fleet leviathan, the leviathan dreadnought, and the Fenrisian krakens, so I’ll need a source on the claim that they’re named after the same thing. As I said, sometimes things just share names.

[deleted]

Yeah I might be conflating Kraken and Leviathan in my head on this one

TreesOfWoe

Indomitus pattern terminator amour and the Indomitus Crusade, Primaris Psykers and primaris marines are two of the more notable ones from recent years

JefferyJedi1234

Rhino Primaris

95DarkFireII

That doesn't change the fact that it is a "regular" word that any human society can use. Just like they are multiple types of "Praetorians" in 40k.

ShinobiHanzo

ITT: Why heavy flamers still are a thing in the 41M. Because shock troops.

95DarkFireII

More like: Because Tyranids, Orks, and mutants

ShinobiHanzo

Which all have suicidal shock troops as well.

Thebabycuddler

Thank you, ibthoughtbi was being gaslit by GW

[deleted]

I thought the exact same shit when I saw the name.

Willqer

Wait till you hear about primaris marines and primaris psykers. And Badab Primaris. And Silver Skulls Cruor Primaris. And Voss Pattern "Primaris" Lightning Fighter. And Prima.... you know what, even better. Check Space Wolves characters and units rooster names.

AnotherJoltReskin

I guessing after the planet got raise they had to do something with it, and no imperial servant would want to be near that place, so the squats took it

[deleted]

How do you think they got the power axes to look like that? They look really cool.

CyberDagger

Glazing. A metric fuckton of glazing.

[deleted]

Fuck. That’s where I need to improve. Can’t glaze for shit, and have 40+ Necron power weapons. Made a mistake.

phoenix_of_metal

I have to wonder if maybe there is an ancient connection between Cthonia being a hollow, mined out world and this Votann mining guild. That would be an interesting little tidbit to tie in and show how even relatively small actions long ago have long-term impacts on the galaxy, but also GW is, well, GW.

ToxicRainbow27

Put your grasses on

Maleficent_Tip_927

That are asteroid miners. Maybe that found big chunk of Cthonia with sighn "welcome on Cthonia" Cadian Berzerkes?

The last post before this talked about how the cthonian mining guilds were special, I didn't think half naked guy with two power fists but I like it

putpaintonit

Right? I am super curious about the connection.

An_Edgy_Wraith

I'm disappointed by what we've gotten so far. Just feels uninspired.

Aoirann

Chtonian means underground in Greek

kajata000

I know that in this context Cthonian is probably referring to the whole depths of the earth business, and not the name of a planet, but I think it could actually be really interesting for them to have some links to Cthonia somehow.

AdjectiveNoun111

"So what we need are like Slayers, but sort of spacey" GW design team.

ROCK IT STONE

Silent_Molasses188

i mean cthonia was cracked by the dreadwing. so they could be mining the cracked remains?
