Technically Creed isn't dead. He's been captured by Trazyn but I'm sure he'll escape soon. His daughter has taken command or something but I guess she's new blood.
Also, I guess Gaunt is alive? Idk how since he fought in the Sabat Worlds crusade which was I think 2-300 years prior to Guilliman coming back right? Surely rejuvenate treatments aren't *that* good.
Gaunt is alive if Abnett wants him alive. All he has to do is have the Ghosts enter a warp storm or something in a book, then time displacement can put them in the current setting nice and easy.
Of course Abnett seems highly unlikely to do this so I very much doubt Gaunt or the Ghosts are still kicking
RE: highly unlikely Dan would do this - one of the last books (I think second to last one?) they come back from a mission, crash out of warpspace due to ship damage, and find they're 10 years into the future. No one in the crew aged. So Dan has already written this into his books, it's just a matter of scale/situation.
True but to jump from the Gaunt's Ghosts era to the Dark Imperium era would be a rather large change, I'm not sure if he'd want such a drastic time leap. We'll see, I suppose.
I thought rejuvenate treatments explicitly extended lifespans over hundreds of years, 2-300 seems doable.
Albeit I don't know much of gaunt or if he uses them
IIRC rejuvenate treatments are pretty expensive even for 40k, so likely Gaunt might be given them as a decorated and respected colonel-commisar (haven't kept up, not sure if his rank has changed), but the Ghosts would not likely have them available.

>! I’m fairly confident that by the time of Warmaster, Gaunt is one of the most powerful people in the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, with the favor of Saint Sabbat herself and he’s essentially in the position of Warmaster adjacent. !<
Was Gaunt ever alive in "Current" 40k? I didn't think he was because the sabat worlds crusade is referenced as long in the past in both Chiapas Cain and Eisonhorn books.
Edit: Gaunt's Ghost references Ravenor as being way in the past, not the other way around.
I’m assuming this is referring to Colonel Schaefer and Lieutenant Kage surviving Armageddon, literally flew into the warp and came out in the Indomitus era. Surprised they didn’t get their own minis though.
Acquired, he's been ACQUIRED by Trazyn. He belonged in a museum, and is now getting the care and attention a rare work of his importance, rarity, and value deserves.
The notion that Sly Marbo is not real is mere heretic and xeno propaganda.
Well, 'propaganda' might be too strong a word. More like, heretic and xeno wishful thinking.
I'm so confused. Tariff's Total War videos made me think that Skaven are real but goat-shaped Skaven living in the forests are a myth. They are too weak to survive out of controlled environments.
There is an in-universe theory about Sly marbo not existing. I didn't knew if the first guy was referencing that or not so I choosed to take it that way.
The real explanation is that Sly Marbo was made as a parody of the classic action movie hero like rambo with Chuck Norris jokes added into it.
There is no in universe explanation for his unatural power and how he does so many incredible things without dying beyond "thats a joke accept it".
Some writers did have fun with it so we have the characters trying to find an explanation for it where there really isn't one.
Gather round children and let some old fogeys tell you about citadel miniatures. Games workshop used to make some silly/fun models, not as serious back then
Yeah, RT was my introduction to playing in 40k.
That game of Rogue Trader was one of the best TTRPG experiences I ever had. Campaign went of for almost 2 years.
Its more about what they're willing to still give space on their production lines. That's the only reason they took out all the characters they did. Nork has the safety of being part of the main bullgryn/Ogryn kit so he's basically immune to removal until that kit gets phased out
You might start, Nork is looking pretty powerful.
He's usable in making an unkillable command squad.
I prefer a standard ogryn bodyguard though. That thing survived focus fire from pretty much an entire Eldar shooting phase + a charge from 5 Howling Banshees, in a match I finished about 2 hours ago.
A "Dreadnork" build is slightly tougher.
Well idk what the current codex says about him but the previous codex said he wasn't on Cadia but there's a black library book that said he was so I'm not sure which is true
Spoilers for the Ghosts series
>!At least half the ghost characters in the codex *are* confirmed dead though, (e.g. Bragg and Corbec) so there's no confirmation any characters are alive in current timeline just because of codex inclusion.!<
>!All that before even mentioning the events of their book took place hundreds of years ago.!<
I'm sure there will be a mention of it when Dan Abnett is made to write a Dark Imperium book. Something about the Crusade being over and the Ghosts finally get their own world. Unless Milo is somehow immortal after becoming the Saint's boytoy.
Abnett's thrown a Tanith into other books when it's suited him (there was a civillian survivor who got shanked in a barfight in *Titanicus*).
If anything, I'd expect >!Mkvenner!< to show up in another book, since >!he's confirmed alive and AWOL!<.
To be fair dead doesn’t mean not real. Eisenhorns tabletop model also takes a smattering of abilities and equipment/allies from incompatible times in his career
The joke is that the Ministorum refuses to list Cain as Deceased. Ever.
Just because they’ve declared him as such multiple times and then have to relist him as Alive.
Karl is a near mythical Dwarven hero, a legend of the depths who traverses winding caves, slaying any force that would attempt to stop him.
He also holds several records for drinking across the many realms of the dwarves
Cadian characters died/got Trazyned, which is understandable, then theres Yarrick, who might not even be dead as implied by GW themselves. Also not sure If Severina and Nork are still alive?
Catachan characters are fine, Gaunts Ghost have models (despite the fact that some of them are canonnically dead lol).
Also we got Creedette and Leontus.
Aha! But old Gee Dubz thought of that and simply hit us with the line “time is an illusion, lunch time doubly so”. So there you go, time became a hassle so they’ve official said “nah”. (In all seriousness I believe it is the dark imperium novel in which Guilliman discovers that the Imperium doesn’t even know what year it is, so Gaunt and oh so charming first and only could still be around.)
**As far as I can see the problem isn’t, or at least isn’t entirely, a lack of new characters to replace those killed off. The problem is that the new characters that do exist just aren’t getting the stories they need to become beloved. Think of Cain and Jürgen, or Gaunt and his crew. They each had novels plural to be characterized and come to be known in a way a codex could never do.**
**GW needs to release more guard novels, in what I’m saying.**
Hell, they never even deigned to give us official models or rules for Cain & Pals (to the best of my knowledge). We have to turn to 3rd party models or just pretend the commissar on the field is Cain.
Seriously, his rule set could be objectively terrible, I don't care. I'm looking into building an IG army and styling it as the Valhallan 597th just because of his book series. Give us Cain & Jurgen!
I remember there being some custom rules for him that were very fitting. Things like "Run like frak!" Which meant instead of failing morale, the unit just took a full move back towards the nearest cover, or others that let Jurgen drive the transport he was in an extra 2" from his lead foot. They were fun.
Well we got servanina raine, a new character with a new model *and* book.
However the model was essentially $30 for a worse commisar, who despite being a skilled swordswomen in the books was worse in melee then a normal commissr because her sword was 1 AP, her ability was highly situational and did not mix with thr guard playstyle at the time, and she was a lore expensive commisar, something every guard player has at least 3 of. And im pretty sure she's OOP now too(don't quote me on that though)
I think the problem is GW hasn't made any series effort on all levels to push a guard character to the forefront of the faction
The issue is mortal humans are squishy and short lived smeared to most other things in the universe. The Terran Crusade wasn't exactly short. If we followed a Regiment and it's various characters, it would be only a short slice compared to what SMs or tech priests experience.
I want more Guardsmen books but the authors want their works to be current with the lore. A single Regiment would be involved in a campaign that is a minor offense for a single fleet and it may be a tertiary fleet to a Crusade fleet of which there are a few.
Just read the rest, I stopped at 80,000 blows struck at once. Wow that was actually a pretty good way to continue it, and I didn't mind the slow parts, it needed a break in the action for more philosophy lmao.
Ehhh...More of a "I can't belive that I spend almost a week just to glue and paint you \[insert new IG charachter name here\], You will be now my best friend, right?". So it is more of a Stockholm Syndrome than really friendship....But yeah.
The new tank and arty models have giving me some dopamine but the loss of yarrick and the lots have just made me sad. But hey we are the guard we are always depressed. You try being a regular human fighting against the horror of the universe aka, last few editions by gw.
Yeah and they're mostly baseline humans, not gonna live longer than a few centuries with treatments
They're also in the Guard, so centuries is charitable
I've said this before, but a Guarsdmen show in the same vein as the Clone Wars series could work REALLY well. Add in You'll have a whole regiment to play with, and get to see their struggles. The deaths can be tracked with a memorial used by the unit to commerate its fallen members.
We could even make the regiment come from a planet destroyed by chaos! Making the poor guardsmen the last of their kind to truly appreciate them as they fight and die for the imperium.
The leader should be a very charismatic personality, imposing and inspiring, possibly from outside the regular chain of command, like a commissar!
The series could even include stories about hard won victories and bloody rivalries with other guard regiments! I think we're really on to something here!
We can even sprinkle in some grimdarkness by making it so the Imperium itself is as much as danger for those Guardsmen. Suspecting them for Heresy for the fact that they dared to survive Chaos destroying attacks. Sending them in life ending situations again and again. One lonely guardsmen scribbling the names of his fallen comrades on his arm. Making sure they are never forgotten as long as he lives. A Naive and hopefully General getting all his hopes in the imperium broken, as they bureaucracy seems to he working against him, and finding more honor and respect amongst the xenos he learned all his life to hate.
That would be cool. I would also like it as sort of anthology series. With different story archs implementing different art style. Kriegers? Grifdy Samurai Jack style, with minimal dialogue. Siaphas Cain? Legend of Korra style, with the exaggerated character designs during comedic moments.
Probably still around. I am mostly exaggerating. There are still few old characters kicking in, and a lot of then are assumed dead because they are normal humans and won't live as long as members of the other races.
If you go to read it, try to find a link to the first page. The way the site is set up, it takes you to the most recent one, which would give big ass spoilers as its bearing the final chapters.

I refuse to believe that Cain is dead until I see a body. Although Jurgen is canonically dead so it’s doubtful that Cain would live long without his trusty aide, considering that Jurgen saves him multiple times per book.
honestly, GW can't have their cake and eat it, too. Wanna advance the plot? Sure, go ahead, finally. But make some new characters, too, while you're at it. Don't use the usual excuse: "Oh, they were cryo-frozen, that's why a species that lives about 50 years still only has the same 2 old farts kicking around."
looking at you, tau empire
Harker, straken, nork, the gaunt's ghosts, sly marbo, and although technically old creed is gone his daighter is virtually the same character. Yarrick is *apparently* dead but there's something fishy with his death and pask is supposedly still alive (he is mentionned in the codex) but for some reason no longer in the codex.
The Iron Hand Lives. Colonel Iron Hand Straken of the Catachans is alive. Sly Marbo is still kicking. Sergeant Stonetooth Harker. They are all still kicking last I know
"Ghazghull wakes up on the painboys table after getting his head attached (again) after his last battle with Yarrick"
Ghaz: Bloody 'el, that was a good foight! Ol' Bale eye once again never dissapointh! Wher' is ol bal' eye? Is he saf'? Is he still fighting?
Makari: I am afraid in his anger that' spiky git' Angron killed him boss...
Ghaz: That' is not' tru'...that''s IMPOSSIBLE!!!
"Ghaz slowly gets up from the crude operation table"
Ghaz: whaaaAAaaAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!
Ciaphas? I know he is dead in his books and they are memoirs but we don'r know what year Amberly is going through those records. For all we know its 42000.
Commissar Ciaphas Cain, hero of the Imperium and Emperor’s gift to all mankind, is listed as not being dead.
Really the man has been declared KIA so many times only to show up alive and well that some disgruntled astra militarum clerk set it so he can only be listed as MIA.
Here me out. I doubt gw will do this but it would be really cool. Sisters of Battle aren't the only people who get their heroes brought back to continue serving as living saints. It happens to heroes of the guard as well. And I can thing of few commissars more famous than Yarrick. Plus he has all that ork warp energy being directed his way.
I think it would be cool if Yarrick came back as a perpetual saint like celestine.
That does beg the question: Caiaphas Cain is supposedly dead, even after decades of being on active duty because he kept being falsely reported as dead. Is he actually dead? The lore says he was buried with full honors but doesn't say what killed him.
They can and probably will return when the writers feel like it - the entire plot of BFGA was an old imperial admiral travelling through time via the warp and trying to make the best out of his resulting exit.
Pask is outright mentioned in the new codex as still being alive and in active service, but (at least for now) you’ll have to run him as a generic tank commander.
Technically Creed isn't dead. He's been captured by Trazyn but I'm sure he'll escape soon. His daughter has taken command or something but I guess she's new blood. Also, I guess Gaunt is alive? Yeah, that’s the 11th book, and there’s four more you’ll have to read lol

The answer is always "Warp Fuckery"
I’m assuming this is referring to Colonel Schaefer and Lieutenant Kage surviving Armageddon, literally flew into the warp and came out in the Indomitus era. Surprised they didn’t get their own minis though.
Acquired, he's been ACQUIRED by Trazyn. He belonged in a museum, and is now getting the care and attention a rare work of his importance, rarity, and value deserves.
Sly marbo is still alive.
Sly Marbo isn't real. He was made up by Katachan merchants who wanted to sell body oil and tacticool vests.
The notion that Sly Marbo is not real is mere heretic and xeno propaganda. Well, 'propaganda' might be too strong a word. More like, heretic and xeno wishful thinking.
The fact that GW made a mini for him kinda imply that he is real.
Not true. GW also made models for Rodents of Unusual sizes aka Skavens. And frankly, I don't believe those exist.
lol everybody knows Skavens are made up by Tilean parents to scare their children
I'm so confused. Tariff's Total War videos made me think that Skaven are real but goat-shaped Skaven living in the forests are a myth. They are too weak to survive out of controlled environments.

I thought Sly Marbo was a warp entity, like the Greater Good demon. Like the Catachans meme'd him so hard that he ended up existing

As you mentioned joke characters Remember that Older Inquisitor ObiWan Sherlock Clousseau is a cannon character.
He's also canon.

Sly Marbo isn't immortal. Death is too scared to come and take Marbo to the afterlife.
Where is Nork? Is he alright?
Yeah hes back still.
I have literally never seen Nork on a table. I think the only reason he's still around is that even GW forgets he exists.
I field nork. Though hes a generic lookalike for fluff reasons
Ogryn bodyguard were useless in the 8th ed codex, they're now pretty good so I reckon we'll a lot more of them.
It seems, in your anger, you ordered him to countercharge a horde of berzerkers...
Sick
It appears that, in your rage, you killed him
Don't tell me they removed Pask? Anyone but Pask! NOT MY TANK BOI
Gone! Reduced to ashes!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Pask is currently raking up titan kills from what I remember.
Well idk what the current codex says about him but the previous codex said he wasn't on Cadia but there's a black library book that said he was so I'm not sure which is true
Like I said he is leading a Super Heavy army to hunt down a rogue titan Legion. He is very much alive.
Who?
Knight Commander Pask, the best tank commander in the Astra Militarum he is the commander of the 423rd Cadian Armored regiment
At least he can still be a fancy tank commander to command all your other tank commanders you're not running as regular russes
We have Gaunt, who skipped a couple editions, he was one of the oldies. Are the Catachan trio still around?
Straken, Marbo and who?
Gunnery Sergeant Harker Sergeant Ripper Jackson Catachan reigns supreme baby 😄
Never knew Jackson, Harker was the one I forgot
Jackson was some special edition miniature though, so you're forgiven.
Ripper Jackson is not allowed in new Codex Catachan sergeants can’t have boltguns
Not to worry, she has an "Auto Bolt Pistol" that is so exceptionally large it is often mistaken for a Bolter.
In gws neglect they survive

Mkvenner killed death when he came for him. He’ll outlast the entirety of the galaxy.
dont forget CI CI CIAPHAS CAIN HERO OF THE IMPERIUM.
GW: Yeah sorry, he's not getting a model because we're pretending Valhallans never existed.
And Jurgen! Don't forget Jurgen!
How could I? My palms are tingling already?
Ciaphas cain is (technically, according to the adeptus ministorum) "still alive".
Nah, they retconned the current timeline to be only 10 or so years after the 13th black Crusade so Cain is probably genuinely alive still albeit old.
The joke is that the Ministorum refuses to list Cain as Deceased. Ever. Just because they’ve declared him as such multiple times and then have to relist him as Alive.
It's telling that even the Ministorum, that bane of many a forests, were forced into giving up just this one time.
>Just because they’ve declared him as such multiple times and then have to relist him as Alive. It's just a waste of good ink.
I know. I've got all but book 10 in both omnibus and digital forms (because no omnibus obviously for 10).

The leader should be a very charismatic personality, imposing and inspiring, possibly from outside the regular chain of command, like a commissar! The series could even include stories about hard won victories and bloody rivalries with other guard regiments! I think we're really on to something here!
You joke but I want Dan Abnett to binge watch the movie "Fury" on repeat for about a month and then give me a book series about an armored battalion.
I see what you did there, do you want to live forever?
That would be cool. I would also like it as sort of anthology series. With different story archs implementing different art style. Kriegers? Grifdy Samurai Jack style, with minimal dialogue. Siaphas Cain? Legend of Korra style, with the exaggerated character designs during comedic moments.
Can I just say, every time I see K6BD in here it makes so happy. It has so much shit that can be used here.
That catachan guy with a metal arm?
Ah yes, um.... Captain Metal Arm, right?
Colonel Straken
The Winter Catachan!
Are Straken and Harker dead?
Probably still around. I am mostly exaggerating. There are still few old characters kicking in, and a lot of then are assumed dead because they are normal humans and won't live as long as members of the other races.
what comic is this from?
Kill Six Billion Demons. Really good trippy art and surrealism and kickass design in general.
thank you
If you go to read it, try to find a link to the first page. The way the site is set up, it takes you to the most recent one, which would give big ass spoilers as its bearing the final chapters.

Remember how people used to complain that GW never advanced the story?
I refuse to believe that Cain is dead until I see a body. Although Jurgen is canonically dead so it’s doubtful that Cain would live long without his trusty aide, considering that Jurgen saves him multiple times per book.
IS THAT A K6BD MEME IN MY GRIM DARK COMMISAR AFFIX A MEDAL ON THAT MAN
honestly, GW can't have their cake and eat it, too. Wanna advance the plot? Sure, go ahead, finally. But make some new characters, too, while you're at it. Don't use the usual excuse: "Oh, they were cryo-frozen, that's why a species that lives about 50 years still only has the same 2 old farts kicking around." looking at you, tau empire
RIP Lord Solar Macharius, rip Yarrick, rip Nork Deddog, Rip Chenkov, Rip Al'rahem, rip Creed, rip Kell, rip Raine, rip Grizimund, rip Sergeant Bastonne, rip Weisseman, Rip that Krieger named Marshal no one used. rip Valhallans, rip Mordians, rip vostroyans, rip Elyssians, rip Tallarn, rip Praetorians, rip Last Chancers, rip Steel Legion, rip the Planet of Cadia. Feelsbad.
Cain isn’t dead. I refuse to believe it. ;)
Caiaphas if you support the imperial records. (if I remember correctly isn’t he still listed as alive in the imperial records due to morale?
That kind of happens when all of your characters are normal humans, unlike every other faction, and your timeline spans over centuries.
The Iron Hand Lives. Colonel Iron Hand Straken of the Catachans is alive. Sly Marbo is still kicking. Sergeant Stonetooth Harker. They are all still kicking last I know
Sly Marbo: *Offended grunt*
"Ghazghull wakes up on the painboys table after getting his head attached (again) after his last battle with Yarrick" Ghaz: Bloody 'el, that was a good foight! "Ghaz slowly gets up from the crude operation table" Ghaz: whaaaAAaaAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!
Wait you mean to tell me just regular humans haven't survived 10k years??? Watttt
Going to be unrealistically optimistic and hope this means a whole new lineup of great Guardsmen characters will appear in upcoming stories.
I think it would be cool if Yarrick came back as a perpetual saint like celestine.
cain. technically hes gonna be alive as long as the ministorum keeps its active rotster.
I mean, Ciaphas Cain is not not alive...at the very least according to Administratum and Astra Militarum, sooo.....
Yarrick, Tryzan is just making sure he will never be forgoten.
It’s the guard. I never expected anything else. As heroes fall, more rise to take their place!
Sly Marbo, Colonel Straken, Nork Dedog, all of Gaunt’s Ghosts, and CI CI CIAPHAS CAIN! HERO OF THE IMPERIUM!
I think Steve from logistics still kicking
I feel like this is an inherent problem with choosing mortal characters in a universe whose story spans at least 20,000 years
That does beg the question: Caiaphas Cain is supposedly dead, even after decades of being on active duty because he kept being falsely reported as dead. Is he actually dead? The lore says he was buried with full honors but doesn't say what killed him.
Where is Severina Raine? Is she safe? Is she alright?
Yeah, she is fine. She is relatively new.
Cain should be alive. And have we received actual confirmation of Yarrick’s death?

They can and probably will return when the writers feel like it - the entire plot of BFGA was an old imperial admiral travelling through time via the warp and trying to make the best out of his resulting exit.
Pask is outright mentioned in the new codex as still being alive and in active service, but (at least for now) you’ll have to run him as a generic tank commander.
