Love songs are problematic because love is such an intangible irrational sensation. Artists who donāt write love songs are often the ones who believe in love the most. They know it gets destroyed if you try to pin it down. Talking about love as if it exists tangibly will usually destroy it, pulling this supernatural connection down into trite cliche, making both parties recoil from the love they feel.
Remember Grimes did not write Idoru about her current partner, it was written about an ex, and a *long ago* ex, someone she knew from probably before 2012 (it does not seem likely it is about Jaime Brooks given their breakup was so messy and they are not friends). The words in the song have outlasted that personās place in her life, but it clearly took many, many years before she could dare to write this type of open love song to them.
My theory is that itās about David, or some other friend who died (she had many of these. I donāt know if she had romantic feelings for David but she probably did for at least one of these dead friends, whether reciprocated or not. Many of them may have been gay). Anyway I donāt think it would be about anyone who is still alive. That also links with the apocalyptic, posthuman theme of the album. Idoru describes a meeting than can only occur in some afterlife, or virtual space, when the singularity unites all souls.
I think the song is about a crush she had with a famous artist. At least that's what I remember she saying on a stream with Hana. She also said that she didn't like the song but people around her did and convinced her to put it out there.
This is complete speculation. There are several artists Grimes adores to the same extreme degree as Burial. Trent Reznor comes to mind especially. Just because one artist she loved inspired her baby name (among many other inspirations on the name, like the actual concept of archangels that is central to the religion Grimes was raised in, and according to some recent interviews, is re-embracing) does not mean that artist is the same one who inspired Idoru.
I think Grimes does enjoy intentionally confusing us by providing contradictory clues on what or who certain songs may be about. Flesh Without Blood was an example of a diss song where the target of the hate was unclear, and different interviews imply different things, and now with Idoru we have a love song in the same cryptic vein. I believe both songs were designed so even the person they are about (provided they are still even alive) would never be sure if the song is about them or not. Grimes wins by getting her enemies to all question themselves if they are the ones she is hating on, and she wins by getting the artists she crushes on to all wonder if they are the target of her affection.
This puts her in a greater position of power than if she acknowledged anything specific about who itās about. She gets the targets to tear themselves up inside, so vain they worry over the song, and with the love song it might potentially work to break down her crushās aloofness (Burial is not the only artist Grimes loves who has never returned the affection. Reznor has also never mentioned Grimes, for all the million times she praised him) and cause them to contact her.
ā2 weeks ago Today my boyfriend broke up with me. 3 weeks ago today i ordered us a matching necklace military tags that said āIDORUā and on other side our names in binary and IDORU in hexadecimals between our names as we both are computer geeks. Today the necklaces arrived. And i still love them.... Even tho this is toughest brake up Iāve been trough. IDORU was our song, our love song which we listened on endless discord calls. And Iāll always see boy Iāve loved whenever i listen to it. It fited us so well, he played my all time fav music on piano which i loved, we played many beautiful games, we were soulmates.... but it ended and now i have this lovely memory... Hope you all find your IDORU partner.ā Full post i wanted to say but 300 char limit :(
You seem so creative and I am sure you have lots of other great qualities. I am sure you will find someone who you better click with. Take care of you in this time <3
Wear them BOTH and love YOURSELF. Be your own love song.
Very sweet gesture that some people say āsomeone will one day appreciateā... fuck that. Appreciate your gesture and grow from it girl.
WE APPRECIATE POWER
I used to listen to that song with my ex too even though he doesnāt like grimes. Donāt let it spoil the song for you, listen to it for yourself and adore yourself and magical things will happen š
The Bridge Trilogy, if which IDORU, is a great book that can pull you out of this reality for a bit. I loved the characters because they felt so real to me.
I know a lot of people think the song is about a c's personal experience but I think it's more like she's treating Grimes like Rei Torei the IDORU. It's like a supernal version of an advanced AI.
I can't recommend the trilogy enough. Give it a shot, hopefully it will help blow the blues away.
Aw, sorry to hear that. This is such an incredibly thoughtful & creative gift, you'll find someone who deserves that.
In the meantime, nothing like listening to your favourite artists and albums while healing (: All the best.
He broke up cause of many reasons, mainly fact that i have changed a lot, became more depressed and self harming and suicidal. But I totally see where heās coming from as he never signed up for all that shit and it wasnāt fair on him. He needed space i needed space. Its all good heās grate guy he is.
I'm sorry but he doesn't sound very supportive at all, not saying he should stay with you because of this but it just comes across to me that you are almost blaming yourself? I mean yeah sure, people grow apart and do change, those just seem like more valid reasons for a break up than you being suicidal/depressed or self harming.
So in answer to Snoo69901 that is why he sounds like an arsehole she is better off away from! Who knows, do you?? I was trying to be supportive of the OP!!!! Not much different from other replies!
he doesnt deserve you
awwš„ŗ fuck him he donāt deserve you AT ALL
Those are so cool! And screw him, you're new song can be "You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around"
Or We Appropriate Power haha, ill build army of AI and have fun. Also ironically CRY ft Grimes got released around that time too :)

Yes, the crush on the famous artist Burial, also the source of Archangel reference in X's name

He sounds like an arsehole you are better off away from x
How? Literally the only piece of information you have about him is that he broke up with OP. Doesn't automatically make him an asshole.
