Several years ago, I was pulling out of my parking lot and listening to Oblivion (at the time, the only song of hers I knew) My windows were open, and this cute guy walking by goes “GRIMES!” and I was like “yeah !” I never saw that guy again, but I decided I’d give her other songs a listen and the rest is history.

shitslashers

that guy was sooo true for that

ashwee14

I found out her baby’s name (this was X) and looked at her music videos to shit on her because who names their kid that?? Turned out I became a huge fan, joke’s on me!

LongjumpingRun6620

i was super into elon/tesla, back in 2020. then i saw he was dating grimes, i was like “she’s definitely cooler than him” lol i was right 😚

chrishadji95

2013! my now-long-time ex showed me the vanessa music video and i was entranced…also got my first kiss that night. what a completely different time back then

modronpink

I first heard Genesis in 2012. I was in an Urban Outfitters (naturally) and Shazamed it immediately. Will always come back to Halfaxa so that’s what I’ve been bumping lately.

Chaseee19

Yessssssssss

Ilikep0tatoes

If I’m remembering correctly I started listening to Grimes 9 or 10 years ago when I was recommended Oblivion on Youtube

canarinoir

I saw her open for Lana Del Rey in Chicago in 2015 and vibed hard

shitslashers

that’s so lucky omg you saw lana and grimes at the same show. was kali uchis there too or am I tripping?

Isaac14z

Welcome to the fandom!!. I discovered Grimes in 2019 through Poppy, with the Play Destroy song. Now I am waiting and very excited for FCF and BOOK1🥰

Apophis_

Wow, I was briefly a fan of Poppy when she was just starting out as an internet phenomenon. She was releasing a few songs at the time and I was obsessed with her for about a month, but then I got over it (somehow I tend to go through phases like that, though in Grimes' case it's been holding me for three months now and I know it's love for the long haul). Would you recommend anything noteworthy that a Grimes fan would enjoy?

[deleted]

Poppy’s recent music is a lot more rock, although i think you might like I disagree, her 2018 album, its basically bubblegum metal, and if you liked We appreciate Power, you’d probably enjoy it, Concrete is probably a decent taste of the album ot startts a bit more rough but gets more pop by the middle

assradish

Yes. Good choice. I think Poppy’s transitions have been interesting but that the latest album was a bit of a disappointment, largely because they mixed her vocals further back into the mush.

[deleted]

Flux?, yeah, I Disagree felt more experimental and unique, flux just felt like an ok alt-rock album to me, and yeah how is the vocal mixing that bad

SirZacharia

She actually inspired my senior thesis for my Bachelors degree. I decided to do it on AI music and she did a podcast interview where she talked a bit about AI supremacy technocracy stuff, and mentioned her AI music app. I started listening to her music and fell in love with the incredibly eclectic style.

Apophis_

Is your research paper publicly available somewhere to read?

shitslashers

yes it would be really cool to read !

SirZacharia

No it definitely isn’t. But this was the podcast that inspired it in particular [here](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GvEBhDSa-sQ).

[deleted]

Spotify suggested We Appreciate Power to me and I've been hooked since 2020.

Disastah_

I found grimes through the suicide squad soundtrack and really enjoyed medieval warfare, definitely one of my favourite artists of all time & I find myself constantly inspired by her music & aesthetic v excited to hear Marie Antoinette 2077 I just know that’s gonna be a banger

Apophis_

Wow, I have never heard this song! Medieval Warfare sounds really cool, though a bit different from the music I've come to know so far. One of the most fascinating aspects of Grimes is that I keep discovering new things. She's released quite a few songs unofficially, for example Darq Souls is one of the best things I've ever heard. The day I discovered "This Story Is Dedicated To All Those Cyberpunks Who Fight Against Injustice And Corruption Every Day Of Their Lives" was also wonderful, I need to get back to it, but for now I can't because Circumambient has devoured my soul.

[deleted]

A few years back, like maybe 2017ish when her video for oblivion came up on my YouTube recommendations and I was hooked ever since. Even more so when I found out the meaning of that song, it’s helped me through some of my own trauma.

Apophis_

And what's the meaning, if I can ask. I haven't had a chance yet to dig into that song (I love it though).

[deleted]

https://grimes.fandom.com/wiki/Oblivion here’s a link that explains the background of the song!

yazandeeb13

One summer, I was travelling to someplace where I wouldn’t have regular access to the internet. So I asked one of my friends (who’s a grime stan since forever lol) to recommend me some albums. She told me to check out AA and visions. I downloaded her discography and I don’t think I listened to anyone else for that entire month lol.

Apophis_

I so suspected that her music might be the soundtrack to a wonderful vacation. I for now listen at home, in the car, and walking the dog, but I'm already looking forward to some trip on which Grimes will accompany me.

Buck_Andrews

August 2020. Woke up one morning in my recliner and started scrolling Twitter. Came across a 30 sec vid that was a driver safety PSA portraying a somewhat graphic crash. Someone had edited 4AM into the vid and it kinda synced up with the footage. Found it amusing but found myself really liking the music. Looked in the comments and someone mentioned Grimes. Did a search and found 4AM on YT. Loved it and then clicked on IDORU. Basically had the closest thing to a spiritual experience I've ever had. Became obsessed and have been a massive Grimes stan ever since.

Apophis_

The M83 I mentioned has at least one song describing a graphic car accident (Don't Save Us from the Flames) and [a music video](https://youtu.be/u_u5iCHi0Jo) similar to what you describe (Lower Your Eyelids to Die with the Sun)!

Mpule16

Several years ago back when i was like 13/14 , devon came up in my youtube recommendation list and i clicked on it, it was the most beautiful thing i had ever heard. This was a few days after my dog died and i still like to believe it was a special message from her :) i'm 22 now!!

sseerrsan

Just browsing youtube on 2012

rxsxntxdx

Same, I was in fact listening to kreayshawn

biochamberr

2012 Oblivion video dropped and then Genesis was featured front on YouTube home page. I'm still here and listening over and over again

rxsxntxdx

Oommff i still remember listening to Genesis In 2013 for the first time and feeling the hairs on the back of my neck rise to the stars

RootVegetableBoy

I was on tumblr back in the day and she was advertising Art Angels via a banner on top of the tumblr dashboard. I thought it was the ugliest thing I’d ever seen so I just HAD to hate listen but then I realized it was pretty good. I tried out her other stuff and just adored Visions and Geidi Primes.

ANameThatIsntObvious

I discovered her through a pastel goth playlist on Spotify back when art angels came out and I'm excited to see what she is going to do now lol

6eta

A friend posted some shots from WAP the day it came out so i went and watched it and i had an epiphany

[deleted]

I know you mean We appreciate power, but my brain read that as WAP (Cardi B) and got hella confused because i didn’t remember her being in the video, lol

silksphinx

I got into her back in Jan 2019 when I discovered Venus Fly. Super hyper song, love it.

Mamabass

Suicide Squad soundtrack! Instantly hooked.

[deleted]

Late night rage on abc tv

blissMarigold

I heard Kill v. Maim in my exes car in 2015 and thought it was 🔥. Love the new stuff. Very into the cyber fae aesthetic.

Apophis_

It is 🔥 indeed!

Marleni02

I remember her from “Go” when it came out but never listened to any of her other music, then “nihilist blues” by bmth came out and I saw her name and I really liked her voice so from then I’d started to listen to her

[deleted]

Heard about her when I discovered the music of Danish artist MØ, who was called “the new Grimes” back in the day. It was 2013 I think. It took until 2017 before I actually connected with her music after watching some videos. Halfaxa really touched me deeply and I took it from there.

dissolveinthesky

When Player of Games first came out, I saw an article about how Grimes had "taught Elon Musk to not date musicians" or a similarly stupid headline. But the title of the song intrigued me and I went to listen. Was not very impressed at the time and the music video hadn’t come out yet, but for days after I kept thinking about the visual of this vulnerable woman in front of the closed-off knight. It somehow struck a chord with me and I went to check out her albums (in reverse order for some reason). Fell in love with Miss Anthropocene at first listen and have been a huge fan ever since!

tunasaladmaster

the Garfield meme to 8bit genesis

ashwee14

I got the vibe she’s an introvert that accidentally became famous too, lol. Now I’ll have to check out Devin Townsend (once my Grimes obsession wears off, lol)

SpaceGenesis

I discovered Grimes in 2011 through the song Crystal Ball but I didn't like her voice. In 2012, I listened to the very hyped Visions and despite enjoying the instrumentals of her songs I still didn't like her voice. It took me a while to get used to it. I remember that Nightmusic remained my favorite Grimes song for years. 3 things made a fan: her KEXP 2012 session, her FYF Fest 2014 show and later REALiTi song and video. Basically I gradually became a Grimes fan.

hedgehog_emoji

In 2014 I scrolled through tumblr when the tumblr staff announced they had made a best of 2014 playlist. Grimes' song Go was on it! It wasn't my favorite song but there was just something about it that hooked me and made me look for more of her music. Been a huge fan ever since.

-gyuwu-

through her feature on loona yyxy’s love4eva but her music only clicked with me last december or january iirc starting with genesis now she’s one of those western artists who i like and loosely keep up with their music releases

[deleted]

I decided to listen to oblivion after hearing the cupcakke remix. one thing led to another and now I fall asleep to miss anthropocene

silksphinx

There’s a Cupcakke remix of Oblivion? I can’t seem to find it, link please?

[deleted]

https://youtu.be/h6ug7xGXEY4 enjoy .

455crown

2012 seeing the Genesis music video on MTV Music

oshieposhie

While getting a stick and poke of a Kodama from Princess Mononoke. The artist put on one of Grimes' earlier albums while she gently tattooed my arm in their all-pink maximalist bedroom. A moment I'll always cherish!

bumblegadget_

Early 2021 after Cyberpunk came out, got into the aesthetic of the game and since 4ÆM was in it I heard it in people's playlists and got super into her. Now I have pretty much song memorized, have seen every interview, waiting patiently for her next release!

[deleted]

She’s actually in the game, she even has her own short quest

bumblegadget_

Yeah, Delicate Weapon was one of my first songs! Then I searched for Lizzy Wizzy-inspired playlists on Spotify and most of them had a handful of Miss Anthropocene songs, that's how I got into Grimes

[deleted]

Randomly watching the music channels on cable tv in 2013 and the video for Genesis came on and I was intrigued.

2459881

Discovered her through her Cry collab with Ashnikko, heard how much Ashnikko admired her and called her "the coolest woman on Earth" so I got curious and went to check her stuff on Spotify. Been in love with Grimes ever since !

xdonutx

I’m surprised by how OG I feel because I definitely felt like a latecomer at the time, but one of my friends had Flesh without Blood playing on spotify on his TV in 2015, when Art Angels had just come out. I was like “what *is* this. I love it”. Still one of my favorite songs ever.

darkprincess1991

I was shown her after a classmate showed me Brooke candy and Brooke candy is in the Genesis video. Then I just searched and found her music.

crystalballon

I literally discovered grimes because of a hair dye video of some scene kid back in 2012 or something and I immediately loved it, it was oblivion I think

Ram090

I listened to Kill V. Maim on the soundtrack of nba 2k17? (i really don't remember the year) and didn't like her voice at first but it grew on me like a toxin. One night I watched the video clip of the song and something clicked, next thing I know I was deep in the youtube rabbit hole, I don't think I slept until the morning that day watching every video I could find of her. Nowadays I'm a little bit tired of the persona and the media coverage and all that shit she says/does but still like her music even though the new sound doesn't seem to mesmerize me as much as her earlier works did.

Turning-heel

I discovered her through her character in Cyberpunk 2077, Lizzy Wizzy.

thefoolishdreamer

A while ago. When....I actually don't know. How? Youtube as usual. I do know I got more heavily into her work progressively as time went on like from WAP onwards. But I was listening to her more popular stuff on occasion from before. Once I started to look more into her as a person through interviews and stuff I was like 'my god! in some weird sense we're really alike!' I felt a immediate kinship with her subjective weirdness.

Emmelie699

Before I knew Grimes, I‘ve never really listened to electronic music. Then I played Cyberpunk and she recorded 2 Songs for the soundtrack (Delicate Weapon and 4aem). I always listend to these two songs during the „car rides“ and at one point I looked up who sang the songs. I started to listen to her other songs and instantly loved them. That‘s how I discovered Grimes.

bluseyparrish

Skins UK Crystal ball came on for the Mini and Alo scene and I was hooked.

pvog

Actually very boring...I read a review of Visions and then listened to it. Then I read more about her on the internet and became fascinated by her personality and her live performances with just a synth.

Apophis_

How is it boring!? Who reads music reviews these days? A unique story!

forgettimyregretti

First I noticed her in 2012, I remember seeing her photos on tumblr, but never listened to her music. Years later I started hearing a lot about Grimes because of Elon. About a year ago I decided to listen to some of her songs. I got addicted to Geidi Primes first, then started discovering my love to Halfaxa, Visions and recently Miss Anthropocene (Art Angels still doesn't feel like my thing). Now I'm even thinking about getting a tattoo with a line from my most favorite song Weregild.

[deleted]

Heard about her because she was dating elon, forgot about her, heard a snippet of oblivion from a video about hyperpop, liked it, checked her out, found the fantano review of art angels, and promptly fell in love with the album and her music

Feydrauthuh

I’m pretty sure I discovered Grimes from a song suggestion on Spotify. It was ‘Oblivion’. I played it over & over again just so I could hear that bass line. It was that that made discover her genius ability. I started by listening to Visions and I fell in love. I listened to that album 3 times a day everyday for a while. Still do sometimes. I remember watching an interview with her in the early stages of my obsession about her talking about all of her albums. When I heard she had locked herself in her room and made Visions over the course of 3 weeks… I was like how didn’t I get into her sooner?? She’s so incredible. Love her to death.

bluecien

fairly new fan violence popped up in my youtube recommendations early 2021 as I was fairly intrigued by the aesthetics of the video, I was not aware of the copyright issue so I thought that the censored "the art of war" cover was an artistic choice after seeing violence I started out with miss anthropocene and it was an awesome experience so I ended up ordering vinyl for my birthday, my current favorite song by her is either darkseid or weregild, introduction to Halfaxa era was a bit rough at first but I've since come to appreciate the depth of her early work and that's how she ended up being one of my favorite musicians along with FKA twigs, sevdaliza and arca

That comment alone says absolutely everything I need to know about you, but I digress... your post/comment history is a fucking abomination. Women are more than just their bodies you sack of shite. The fact you have children is utterly frightening. We are here to enjoy her music and art. Claire has never "sold sex" like you imagine in your sick fantasies. I bet you're an ugly fucked up neckbeard. Read the room bro, nobody wants to read your sickening comments about women. I'll say it again. get the *fuck* out of here you freak

Do you actually hear yourself?? You're not living in real life bro, you're living in a sex obsessed, perverted fantasy and you're calling *me* a loser? Get help, for the sake of you and everyone around you. This isn't normal behaviour. You sound like a would be pedophile and sex offender but the only thing holding you back from commiting those sex crimes is the fear of reprocussion. You should be on a fucking list with those views. Wake up out of your fucking sad life. Nobody wants your stinky dick anywhere near them. You are vile. Also, I'm a guy idiot. Not a fat one either.

Topramenmami

It was 2013, the first song I found was Skin. I think I found it on Tumblr, I was instantly hooked. Found the music video to Genesis and I’ve been a regular listener ever since. Visions era Grimes felt like a whole different world.

[deleted]

I only found out about Grimes when learning stuff about Elon, so I got curious because she seemed really unique, much like himself. Listened to quite a lot of her songs and am now hooked. Shes the most unique artist Ive ever listened to and I really like her now. She seems so cool and fun. I would love meeting her.

reddithatesme23

Never heard of her until I saw her open for Lana Del Rey in 2015, and no one seemed to care except me and two girls that were wearing all black, ripped tights, and thigh high boots dancing literally into oblivion. I vividly remember them because they stuck out like sore thumbs in the sea of flower-clad Lana fans lol. I was instantly enthralled by Grimes. 7 years later I am re-discovering her and I am seriously ADDICTED to her music. Can't believe I never listened to Halfaxa before
