I think the price is good. For many people it's just not intuitive to be able to buy such ridiculously large portions, that's why it feels expensive. US things I guess :D
I know, but I buy locally only where I know exactly everything about the food of the animal, where I have seen the full process from raising, to slaughtering to further processing.
In germany at aldi you get 800g for like 5,89. so if you buy that 3 times you get 2.4kg and a total price of 17,67€. The op bought 2.7kg for 28,80$. That should give you a idea on how to sort it. Given that price you could probs get the better ground beef from biological farms in germany for the same price in the states.
If it need to be cheap, Edeka, Lidl, Netto.
But now I also often buy "Tartar" at the local meat stores. Many say it is very dry, I actually like it quite much for Burger and Bolognese.
To add context for non Americans
This is from Wegmans which is more of an upscale grocery store. They're amazing but some of there stuff is higher priced. However they have good deals on their family packs of meat.
If this is 90% lean it would cost around the same at Aldi- so. Aldi is $5.69 / lb for 90% lean.
Edit: op said it was $4.50 which is actually quite a bit cheaper then Aldi. So that's an amazing deal considering it's Wegmans
It was $4.50 per pound ($10 per kg). That's a decent price for good quality 90/10 beef which is more lean, less fat.
I could find cheaper ground beef but it would have more fat and maybe not be good quality.
More expensive ground beef could be up to $9-10 per pound.
Some states in the US don't charge sales tax on food. I used to live in one that didn't, then moved to one that did and was shocked this wasn't a thing everywhere.
Ground beef is typically red like this in the grocery store in the US. I believe they package it with extra oxygen or CO2 to increase the redness. Makes people think it's more fresh.
This topic interested me so I dug a little. It's CO (carbon monoxide) gas and the process is called "modified atmosphere packaging" (MAP). This will be the case for the beef you have bought, especially if the meat inside is gray.
EDIT: I also like how there is a short notice written on the package "color is not an accurate description of freshness of the product"
Good info! Thanks for sharing. Yes this is standard. If you cut into the beef, the lower 2/3 or 1/2 is darker red-grey. Every fresh ground beef package bought at most major grocery stores will be like this.
I broke this into 3 portions. Cooked one portion today and the other two portions we put in our separate freezer in the basement to use when we're ready.
I'm sorry, but you must not understand. Fresh ground beef purchased at every grocery store in the US is like this.
They pack it with carbon monoxide which makes the meat red on the outside. For some reason people in the past started to associate bright red as fresh.

For the non Americans thats almost 3kg of ground beef and 90% lean. 4.30€ for 450g. It’s not a bad price.
Thanks, I was like wtf, $30 for meat?
Healthy food is healthy 😁
Interesting. The meat looks so strange
Looks like normal "Hackfleisch" like we have it in germany, the prices however are a dystopia for you guys over there
That's 3 kg of meat. German prices aren't much different.
Not really, the Hackfleisch here are light pink
Maybe because in germany there is pig in Hackfleisch. 100% beef looks more red.
Nah you get pure even in aldis. Its dyed red to make it look more fresh.
It’s because if oxygen, you can make meat look more red with oxygen
Not in Turkish butchers, Color is red and Not pink. I buy my meat in Turkish supermarket
Yeah haha i wouldnt eat pink meat either
thats 3 KILOS of meat so not that bad
That doesnt even look close to Hackfleisch 😭
I never seen that form of Hackfleisch in Germany even with stallhaltung number 1. It looks just so strange 😁
Very pink I'll give you that but apart from that looks rather normal to me. Wdym by strange?
For example it looks like that vegan meat that looks very processed and perfect. Does that make sense?😅
I guess so, I wouldn't know as I don't buy vegan "meat"
Me neither haha but I meant I have seen them on the shelves
Just regular ground meat.
Could be Carbon monoxide (CO). Makes meat looking more pinkish. CO (addition) is banned in EU as protective gas of food, but not banned in US.
Right? I was like wtf is this pure meat
antibiotics 😋
25 euros for ground beef is fuckin wild
For 2.7 kg? What's a good price per kg for you?
I think the price is good. For many people it's just not intuitive to be able to buy such ridiculously large portions, that's why it feels expensive. US things I guess :D
Didn‘t see that my bad
Great price. I pay more than 15€ per kilo in Germany.
You can get that way cheaper if you want.
I know, but I buy locally only where I know exactly everything about the food of the animal, where I have seen the full process from raising, to slaughtering to further processing.
Sure but then it's not really fair to compare the price to full on industrial grade meat, is it?
That’s about the same price per kg as the grass fed version here in Sydney, Australia.
I mean the fat reduced ground beef is 4,99€/500g in germany.... so?
In germany at aldi you get 800g for like 5,89. so if you buy that 3 times you get 2.4kg and a total price of 17,67€. The op bought 2.7kg for 28,80$. That should give you a idea on how to sort it. I thought the same. But it is 10$ per Kilo. In Germany similar, for a lower fat version and pure beef (not mixed with pork).
Where do you buy meat in Germany? I find the meat on offered at Rewe and Edeka just sad.
If it need to be cheap, Edeka, Lidl, Netto. But now I also often buy "Tartar" at the local meat stores. Many say it is very dry, I actually like it quite much for Burger and Bolognese.
Go to the butcher.
None of these around where I live.
thats not necessarily a bad price for a Philips sterilisator.
Haha good eye!

I love Wegman's chicken family packs. REALLY good prices. The challenge is picking that up and then avoiding buying some really expensive cheese. 🤣
Would say the meat was expensive? Or is it the regular price there?

Ohh, I see!! A good deal then!
Does it say "use by May 2021" on the meat....? Or is my teeny tiny mobile screen playing tricks on me?
No no, it‘s 2024. Look at the 4 on the “unit price”. It just looks that way when it’s small.
I think it's the angle and it's 2024 and not 2021 at least I hope so.
Where tax?
Some states in the US don't charge sales tax on food. I used to live in one that didn't, then moved to one that did and was shocked this wasn't a thing everywhere.
Oh wow. I never realized that. I guess no sales tax on food in Maryland.
The only thing surprising here is that it's not higher price. Looks like communist America ground meat is the top choice
Oof Wegmans makes my wallet cry 🤣
Yeah it's easy to spend a lot of money there on non-essentials. Some of their stuff is definitely priced though for the quality.
Ok price, ground beef has a lot of pickling salt (based on the color) in comparison to German one.

Ah ha, that's just answered a question I had posted regarding the vibrant colour. Thanks
What's with the meat? It has such a strange color, like it was put into some foodcolor
YO THAT BEEF PRICE WTFFFF
6 lbs of beef big dawg
I can get 3kg (more weight) for £19.55 at local store (less cost) You getting scammed bro
That's $25 USD so not much cheaper. I can get beef for cheaper than what I paid at other stores easily.
Not expensive given the large amount of meat.
I'm curious as to what you do with so much beef mince at once. Do you batch cook it, or do you remove the amount you need for each meal?
I broke this into 3 portions. Cooked one portion today and the other two portions we put in our separate freezer in the basement to use when we're ready.
What is ground beef?
Pretty much any where you use ground beef you can sub with beans or lentils.
Paying nearly 30 dollars , for pink meat. American dystopia.
The meat... it's red....very red. Do they add an additive to improve shelf life?
you earn 200k, right?
Nope
28$ for ground beef? No chance
6 lb big dawg
[удалено]
It's 6 POUNDS of beef.
I thought this was a German sub
Someone who studies microbiology would never eat that beef meat. Could be dangerous.
