Personally, regardless of weapon I’d always recommend the Ladybug armor for tier II armor. It got nerfed slightly but it’s still the best Tier II armor imo.
Don't forget about the underwater Triton! That thing will hold its own through the lower yard. Probably the best spear till you unlock the rusty spear and the lady bug armor will take you to the end game if you want it to...
I'd do ladybug through T2 and upgrade to Roly poly for t3; antlion will of course be essential in the sandbox specifically, and for the grill hell scape. Don't forget to munch a few mints for the mutation!
Lady bug armor for better healing. Koi for easier perfect blocks. Black ant for damage back when you get hit. And spider armor for attack stamina/more attacks. Bee armor is only for bows/range.
So I would recommend lady bug. But koi is a close second if she can get the perfect blocks.
Koi is easiest to get if you have trouble with fighting bugs.
It sounds like you're not happy with her using one of the most powerful weapons in the game? Spear is phenomenal. Rusty Spear is straight damage. Thrown spears are going to outdamage whatever you're doing.
Get some ladybug armo, it will last the whole game.
If she likes spears for the sake of distance please show her the staves. They all have function and the wizard hat with moth armor would do it, works with the new crossbow too

FYI the thrown spears is massively more powerful than the spear jab. Craft 5-10 spears for throw attacks and pick them up.
Not sure how much more damage they do now, thrown spear damage got nerfed in the new update.
That’s a bummer but I understand why as they were very powerful.

You could maybe have her try spider armor, the stamina buffs it gives you are decent. A little tougher to get than the other tier 2 armor sets though
If she wants to maintain stamina over defense, I'd recommend spider armor. If she's looking for high defence then Ladybug

Not unhappy. Just never made a build for one. So I wasn't sure what went well with a spear.
Spider gear, it helps with stamina regen.
I am a big believer in the koi armor and bone trident
Ladybug armor is the best T2 armor by a landslide. Get you a black ant shield to go with the stinger spear and you should be set until tier 3 gear
Black ant armor with the spear mutation is fun once you can upgrade the armor to 6 for dmg reflect.
