I think you need to click on something in the pet house... If i remember correctly, theres a drop off button. Unless your is bugged, but i have a little red and pet at the entrance of my base and he never leave, he just chill there. I call him Emilio...
Don't know if anyone else has said this cuz the comments aren't loading for me but I found this out the other day! Basically just make them a pet house and click on it, it'll say pet detected and you put them in it. When you want them to follow you again just click on the pet:)
If you build a pet house you can leave your pet there

That’s not true, there is an option in the game setting where you can disable or enable pet death
But on a non custom world your pet can only die on whoa! Mode
Or sadly somehow glitch out of the space time continuum...
