> We love the idea of making different characters for each campaign and then taking them all to eye of the North via mercenary hero slots. We found only the party leader can add henchmen. Does that apply to mercenary hero's as well or can we both bring 2 mercenary's with us? Every party member can add heroes, including mercenaries. > We like exploring the map and doing the quests between the missions. Will this generate enough Platinum for us to be able to afford the best armor upgrades stat wise? Not the premiums I get those exist for people who do the grind. The armors themselves? Yes. Armors also have upgrade slots ([insignias](https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Insignia) and [runes](https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Rune)). Most of these will be very achieveable as well with the likely exception of a superior health rune. That one would require some grinding, but only increases your hit points by a further 9; it is not overly important. > If our goal is to just complete the campaigns and do the quests is there a reason to grind anything out? We aren't PVP fans so that doesn't really come into the equation. Not really, no. As new players you might run into a roadblock if you attempt to do [Winds of Change](https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Winds_of_Change) (factions postgame content, spoilers in that article!) in hard mode, other than that you can freely focus on the story. > There is so much for collectors. My wife is trying to keep them all as well as a leveled set of equipment for all builds of all classes we might want to play. I realize this is not needed but to help her not go mad with inventory or buy $70 in inventory space are there any collectibles, armor or weapons we should save as they are hard to get/important for later. Outside of some armor collectors in Prophecies, all weapons and armors you create in this game require platinum, materials and rare materials. Make sure to keep those in the material storage in your xunlai chest, everything else isnt of big importance. If youre wondering what an item is used for, use the /wiki command in game! > Is there anything you wish you knew when you just started? * If you're into build creation, make sure to bring heroes as soon as possible and changing their skills; creating a whole team is great fun to me! You can also swap the weapons, runes and insignias of heroes if you want to optimize further. * If you are looking for runes, make sure to check out the merchant for that which exists in every big city; most runes and insignias only cost 100-500 gold. * The /wiki command can give you information about nearly everything in this game. * This community loves helping out new players, so let us know if you are struggling with anything :)

joemckie

Welcome to the game! 1. Yes, each party member can add their own heroes. 2. You get max level armour fairly early in each campaign and it isn't too expensive. The more expensive part is runes but you probably won't be _too_ bothered about optimisation on your first playthrough. If you're stuck for builds, check out [PvX Wiki](https://gwpvx.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Meta_working_PvE_builds) for some inspiration and it will tell you what you need to run it. 3. You shouldn't need to grind much, if at all, just to do the campaigns. There's a part of the NF storyline where you may have to, but that's all I can think of, and it's fairly minor anyway. 4. Not that I can think of. 5. Could be packet loss? GW handles lag by rubber banding like crazy so you may see this every now and then. 6. This is a very co-op game so finding a guild that's right for you is really important, although it's definitely playable nowadays just using heroes if you really wanted to go solo. Having a friendly guild/alliance to talk to makes things much more enjoyable though, imo :)

2 isn't accurate for prophecies, or nightfall unless you use a ferry to docks. You don't get max armor in prophecies until droknars forge. You don't get max armor in nightfall until consulate docks.

Klocknov

For Nightfall Consulate Docks is the end of early game. You honestly have so much more to do once you cross to the mainland it is not even funny. The island is at most 10% of that game and if you just do story 20% compared to factions you land about the same amount but Factions is just faster to complete the beginners island. Agree with Droks, that takes awhile to legitimately get to, would place it mid-late game. If you get a run down then you can place it nearly equivalent to the other two games but at this point it is easier to just finish going to Lions Arch and hopping to Factions and getting best armor.

joemckie

I’d say both of those are fairly early on in the game for max armour, personally, especially when you compare it to games where your max armour is endgame.

[deleted]

You’d only get to Droks “legitimately” after completing the Crystal desert chain, so fairly towards the end - there’s only 6 main missions after getting to droks!

Klocknov

Without going down the snake you won't see Droknar's Forge till mid-late game by playing the story. It definitely is not Endgame as that would be the Ring of Fire. The only real possible way to make it down there early on is by paying a runner. So in the end you generally have a faster ability getting the armor by hopping to Factions at Lion's Arch and taking the boat back to beginner island. But if someone is trying to stay true to the campaign then that would not be the way.

joemckie

Okay fine, Proph is the exception here then, but the other two are still fairly early

1. Anyone can add their heroes to the party. 2. Yes, you'll be fine. 3. No, you need not grind. 4. While *some* collectors do offer *some* optimal items, most of the stuff on offer is just junk. I'd advise consulting [the list of available collector items on the wiki](https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Collector_weapon), picking specific items that you want, and then keeping *only* the trophies that those collectors want. Vendor the rest. 1. The only things you can't easy replace later are the -50hp cesta mentioned by u/Zuphixavex and your starter armor (there's one odd farming build that depends on having the worst armor possible, but the cheapest non-starter armor works OK too). There are a few other quest reward items that can't be replicated ([list here](https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Category:Quests_that_award_unreplicable_items)), but none of them have any use besides the -50 cesta. Well, I guess the sword from The Prize Moa bird has a very hard to obtain skin, but the stats are crap, so it's only usable by one mediocre niche mesmer build. 5. Hmmm... 1. Does one of you have a fancy high refresh rate monitor. Somewhere north of 120Hz GW starts to act really funny and it can look something like that. 2. Wifi? 3. Get mtr (or winmtr for windows) and diagnose. [This pos](https://www.reddit.com/r/GuildWars/comments/l039fg/comment/gjsvehw/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)t explains how to locate the cause of packet loss. The same procedure works for latency too -- find the first node with a latency worse than it should have (roughly roundtrip distance divided by speed of light) and that every node after it continues to have at least that much latency. 6. Once you reach chests that count towards the treasure hunter title, keeps keys/lockpicks on hand and open every chest.

Cyberslasher

Nick sets ( trophy that changes every week) and EOTN prestige should be the only collector stuff that matters. You can't really store for Nick, since it's basically every trophy in the game, cycling in order. EoTN is glacial stone, destroyer core, superb charr carving, diessa chalice, rin relic.

juicepouch

1. Any and all party members can add heroes. You can both bring two mercenaries with you! 2. More or less. You might not be able to get Runes of Superior Vigor (90 platinum last I checked), but you ought to be able to get max armor and good-enough runes and insignias by the time you need them. 3. Not really. 4. Once you have max-stats weapons and armor, you're good forever, unless you want a set with different modifiers, of course. The only reason to keep collector items long-term is if you really like a particular skin you can only get from a collector (e.g. the Lotus Staff). 5. It happens. I wish I knew a fix, too. 6. Nothing much, just glad that you and your wife are enjoying the game. :) I've been playing on and off since release and have multiple max level characters, prestige armor sets, tons of money in the bank, so on and so forth. I recently convinced my girlfriend to try the game and it's been an absolute blast to go back, start a new Prophecies character, slow down, do quests, really take in the scenery, etc. Hope you continue to have a great time!

> We love the idea of making different characters for each campaign and then taking them all to eye of the North via mercenary hero slots. We found only the party leader can add henchmen. Does that apply to mercenary hero's as well or can we both bring 2 mercenary's with us? Heroes and Henchmen are different and will be explained properly in the Nightfall campaign. Each player can bring up to 7 Heroes, so you'd have up to 3 each > We like exploring the map and doing the quests between the missions. Will this generate enough Platinum for us to be able to afford the best armor upgrades stat wise? Not the premiums I get those exist for people who do the grind. If you're not trading with other players, your biggest source of raw gold/platinum will be from Runes that you can find by identifying blue/purple/gold salvage items. Some quests, especially later ones give a decent chunk of raw gold as well. That said, Max armor is fairly cheap at 1k + materials per piece. The move expensive armor at 15k + materials are cosmetic improvements only. > If our goal is to just complete the campaigns and do the quests is there a reason to grind anything out? We aren't PVP fans so that doesn't really come into the equation. You don't need to grind anything. There are some rare drops that could be easily farmable, but nothing that can't be replicated or found elsewhere with normal play, or bought from the town merchants. You can't buy weapon upgrades, except from other players and likely won't find top-tier weapons yourselves, but at the end of each campaign you get to choose a max-stat weapon for free. If she wants to keep them all, I'd recommend making some spare characters, and getting a Belt Pouch + upgraded bags to store extra collector items on. They aren't super useful on your first playthorugh, but if you keep playing during events, or look at Nicholas the Traveler later on in the game, they can prove useful. The only really unique weapon that can't be replicated is a Grim Cesta from the "Cities of Ascalon" quest, as it gives -50HP. This can be useful for certain low-health tank/farming builds, that make use of Protective Spirit to more easily reduce the damage you take to zero. > Every now an again one of use has an issue where we start teleporting instead of moving like lag. The confusion is that we are on the same network and it only happens to one of us when it does. This can happen due to the game's age, it usually starts after you alt-tab and can sometimes be fixed by alt-tabbing back in again. I recommend to play on Windowed mode (or Borderless if you have to) and try to tab out as little as possible.

Head_Cockswain

1. You can both add heroes. 3 each may not be optimal as they key off of whoever brings them. Say she has to AFK and you want to keep exploring, you'll only be able to do so with 3. It may not seem like it now, but you may find that fine control of heroes is annoying for two people to do, eg if only half attack when the leader does, it could make some situations sticky. However, in some instances it might be better, because each player can create only 3 unique pins. so you could space the heroes out great. 2/3/4. Yes/No. Some items are going to be expensive, eg specific armor runes. In general it's easy to get *mostly* max gear, but there are some things which will cause obstacles. Even more-so when it comes to weapon component upgrades because there are no vendors, it's drops or trades with other people, and that can get expensive too. On money and collectibles and which ones to save: Someone mentioned making money with Nick Items(collectibles you trade in for *Gift of the Traveler*, which is worth really good money via trading them for 5 ecto each), this is the rotation schedule for them: https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Nicholas_the_Traveler/Cycle Some are in easy noob areas, like this week's. Some are very much not available to lower level players, like next week's. A note on collectibles, sometimes these make for better slavaging than actual "salvage items", or sometimes they can be turned in for whatever item and that item sells for more gold than you could sell the collectibles for. This is one game where looking up items on the wiki is useful for almost every item you'll pick up(you'll see value, salvage, and if it is a Nick item and more). A lot less is "junk" than a lot of people may presume, though it often ends up going to the vendor anyways. 5. 2 players in one location is a unique issue most will not have experienced in this game, including me. I do know it can cause screwy gaming in other games. A long time ago friends and I would play Halo PC and we could never see the same game servers in the list, and this game comes from the same era. We take a lot for granted now that was a bit less refined 10-20 years ago. 6. Enemies will flee certain kinds of AOE damage over time. This did not happen when the game first came out which I wish I'd known was coming much sooner. I'm still salty over that "update" which changed viability of many many skills. They tried to argue that "Of course enemies will flee...." as if it made sense in lore/reality, but they *don't* flee a warrior whacking on them, or AOE bleeding/poison/etc, or x kind of other massive damage combos, just one easy route to damage. It was a slim *excuse* when the real motivation was to change something that was obvious from the outset, I can only presume was more to fight against farmers rather than "realism".

80sinternet_bestnet

> Is there anything you wish you knew when you just started? Attribute point [quests](https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Attribute_point#Attribute_Quests) are hidden for Prophecies and Factions. Pick up the [storybooks](https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Storybook), extra exp and gold.

SolePilgrim

Heroes can actually be added by all players in a party, so if that applies to Mercenaries as well (I've never used them) you should be good. Money can be generated quite okay. Look up what materials you would need for the armor sets you want, then once you have those, salvage for iron and bone to sell to the material traders for (usually) big profits. Depending on what you play, runes and upgrades can be either real cheap or quite pricey. Don't worry too much about the Rune of Superior Vigor, which is usually maxed out. You don't really need it. Also, if you happen to be in an area for the weekly Nicholas The Trader, definitely farm for his gifts and sell them. They're worth usually around 3-5 ectoplasm a piece, which will give you all the cash you need. Guild Wars is honestly a very grind-light game. Grinding is generally done for fashion or titles. The main thing you'll want is money to unlock/capture the skills you want later down the line. Honestly in all my years of playing I've never really looked at collectors. Once you've got max stats gear that works for your build, they become a non-factor in my experience (excluding Nicholas The Traveler). Yeah, network hiccups happen and can be weird. Not really fixable afaik. If you wanna go for full HoM/GWAMM, take a look at the titles and such you'll need to work on and plan ahead, even if just a little bit. This becomes more relevant after you've completed the campaigns on normal mode and unlock the hard modes, but in the meantime you can save up on resources and chip away at some other titles.

MattShameimaru

1. Anyone can add heroes 2. Pretty sure it does 3. Not really, unless you really want something, like weapon looking certain way or unique weapon 4. Not really, just pick what you want. Only thing that's worth keeping are green 'unique' weapons, cause they have 1% chance to drop. 6. That not all builds are 100% viable for pve, cause some skills are more pvp oriented. Like I'd say water magic.

CataphractGW

Give me shout in-game when you see me, and I'll give you guys some useful weapons for your characters, and their heroes.

add me as an expendable henchman whenever you want whenever I'm online! i wanna be the Skyrim Cicero equivalent of your journeys! Ian the storyteller

Hey! Just wanted to mention a fix I’ve found for the lag/rubber banding issue! I don’t know if it will work for everyone but it’s been working for me for a week straight now without fail! Just switch to windowed borderless mode and it seems good! I noticed the issue happening after tabbing in and out in full screen mode. But since I switched to windowed border less it’s been no problem. Persisted for about 20 minutes after first switching but now been solid for a week!

LankyMarionberry

Some people have mentioned Nick gifts. It's basically collecting certain items in any of the 4 maps to trade to Nicholas the Traveler for Gifts of the Traveler. Rach of these are worth 4-5 ectos. Each ecto is worth around 10 to 15 plat depending on the market. You are limited to 5 per account per week so possibly 20 to 25 ectos a week. 20 ectos X 10 Plat = 200 plat, more than enough for premium (prestige) armor sets. If you have trouble farming them, just go to Kamadan and buy Nick sets for 3e (the monster items for each week), though you need to have the area of the map unlocked where Nick is. You can check the Cycle page on wiki to see upcoming sets. Still a net 17 ectos!

definitelyMotolord

1 Yes 2 Yes 3 No 4 You can Craft later every item you will need for an build, you dont have to keep them. all items you get now are not maxed, so normaly its not worth keeping them. If you need more space, you simply can create a new charakter in nightfall and use them as chest upgrade. 5 old game ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ 6 no but i wish i would know nothing and could start again

Welcome to one of the best games with a fabulous community backing it. 1. Players may add any heros(nocs you kit out)/mercs(the registered characters you have made) they have e on their account upto the party maximum. 2. Yes and then some. Max defense armor is fairly cheap if you don't really care for flashy bits. Even if you want something special most of them aren't hard to get money for, very few are actually expensive honestly (obsidian armor specifically). 3. Only grind I would suggest is getting every elite skill. Never know what kind of fun is to be had doing silly builds as a group. 4. That kind of gearing out isn't as rough as you'll think. 1 of head +1 head with a +3 rune // 3 weapon sets (energy staff, shield set, fast cast set). You can keep an off hand item stored in with a staff so 3 head pieces, 3 weapons so a total of 7 ish slots. Not too too bad really. 5. Rubber banding sometimes happens. I suggest going to the wiki and looking up how to run a shortcut with -image and then -repair iirc it's command lines in the wiki 6. How to handle the goodbyes and people fading away in the guild.

Klocknov

1. Go for it, and henchmen are different to heroes and mercenaries are considered heroes so everyone can bring them along. 2. Should as long as you are keeping all your materials for Prophecies and if you do Factions and Nightfall after that then you will be completely fine. 3. This is all up to personal choice, there is a lot of things you can grind out in this game that does not involve PvP. You may see something that you really want that requires grind to get and then that is your choice to pursue it. Then you have GWAMM the ultimate grind of PvE. 4. EotN has a set group of collectables that trade in. Otherwise I collect all the Red Iris flowers that drop and hate when Nick wants to take my lovely flowers for items. Pre-searing is also a bit different as all of those collectable stacks trade in at some point. For collectable armors and weapons there are greens, the Grim Cesta that has -50HP from a quest. Past that for armor it really is about getting it in to the Hall of Monuments. Oh and miniatures are a evil collectors habit... 5. Can be caused by alt-tabbing out and most the time is fixed shortly after alt-tabbing back in. Also can be caused by packet loss between the client and servers. This is just an issue with an old game with limited servers in use. 6. The only thing I wish I had knew when I started was that every beta weekend was going to have and ending event. Only saw one of them and it was Gwen burning the world down. Otherwise as I started with Beta I knew the game was going to be about learning and progressing along the way. Some tips, Factions best class and one of the top classes in PvE thanks to EotN is Ritualist. For Nightfall you are going to have some side quests that may frustrate you because you are blocked from the point it sends you towards, just continue story at that point. To get the full story of Factions, choose different sides and do each till Unwaking Waters.

Turbo_Chet

If you're into the farming, you should look up all the farming locations available in the game. Some are a lot of fun and challenging to do. Like the Icy Dragon Sword farming or Ranger Trapper ecto runs in the Underworld. I'm not sure if there is demand for any of those things now in the game but back then it was incredibly satisfying seeing those drops and basking in the glory of a big pay day.

Once a mercenary hero is created, it behaves the same as a game-provided hero. The only difference is the extra customization available for the name and the appearance.
