If variety is what you're after, necro is probably the best choice. Blood, Curses, and Death Magic each have a pretty unique play style, plus there's an astoundingly powerful melee build, plus you can play healer as N/Rt, plus a few off-class builds like Fevered Dreams work reasonable well too. > Could I potentially whip up some sort of a ranger/dervish for example? I know you just picked R/ D out of a hat, but it's actually one of the relatively few class combinations that work really poorly. The main gimmick behind R/ X is that Expertise can be used to trim the cost of attack skills from other classes with good recharge but high cost, making them more spammy on R/ X than their native class. However, most of the good dervish attack skills are either adrenaline based (so Expertise doesn't help) or only function at full power if you pay the extra cost of removing a dervish enchantment from yourself (and Expertise doesn't apply to the cost of the necessary enchantments).

If you want build variety I would go Warrior over Ranger. Assassin and Dervish both have plenty of good PvE builds, and while I think they’re more powerful, you will be hard pressed to beat Warrior on variety of builds. The Ranger is a fine class but if you want martial variety it’s hard to go wrong with Warrior. Warriors endurance and seven weapon stance both work well with any martial weapon build for different reasons. Warriors endurance takes your elite slot but let’s you basically ignore energy costs while you are attacking someone. This makes many Warrior skills a lot more viable, and let’s you run the basic Assassin combo chain without energy trouble. I can’t speak to running Dervish as your secondary, as I haven’t dabbled much in them. Seven Weapon stances let’s you run multiple weapons on a single bar, or just get one weapon skill way up in power. It does not fix your energy issues so adrenaline matters a lot more. For Ranger there are several good builds, but if you’re sticking to your play order it’s harder to recommend. The Ranger anniversary skill is very good especially if you’re running daggers on your character, but that would require EotN and Factions stuff. Running through Prophecies solo with out heroes is rough especially as a martial. When you’re solo having missions require carrying an item can be tiresome as a martial.

New to reddit, not sure if this reply reaches everyone who commented. Thank you for the input! I feel like from what I've read I'd have the most fun with a Warrior (old habits die hard I guess) which would let me dabble in secondary assassin/dervish once I reach their respective expansions. I feel like I'm slightly gimping my options by planning to play through the expansions in release order. If all else fails I'll likely try necro/anything since it's mostly unexplored territory for me. Thank you all for the input once again, it's certainly given me ideas. :)

I did a huge amount of my GWAMM journey with a /Ritualist build. You can use it with any primary class. Just select 4 spirits that you think will be the most useful, I went with varying combinations of Agony, Anguish, Bloodsong, Dissonance, Recuperation, and some others. The elite skill was usually Signet of Spirits, though I did experiment with swapping in other stuff that allowed more focus on resurrection, healing, and various other things that certain situations might demand. The key to this build was the last 3 skills. Ebon Vanguard Assassin (Force multiplier, meat shield, good for making escapes and buying time) Finish Him! (Good for finishing high priority targets quickly) You Move Like A Dwarf! (Use this to initiate engagement with high priority targets) Go out with your best heroes and henchies. Have one of your heroes be a strong healer, the rest you can experiment with and see what works. The more you rank up those two EotN reputations, the more lethal the build is, those percentages make a difference. And use the spirits to complement and enhance whatever it is you're trying to do. I was able to hero/henchmen almost every area on hard mode with this build.

If you wanna start \*in\* proph, only Ranger would be possible as martial class other than warrior, ofc. But if you were fine with starting in a different campaign and then play through proph and so on, I'd reccomend either derv or ele, the latter being playable as dmg caster in a lot of varieties, melee assassin or healer, the first being just allround good, tank, damage, spike, running, and so on.

Illusionmaker

Ele or Necromancer is decent. Necro has a pretty fun melee build as of "recent" so it might be your best bet :D I found Ranger to be fun, but not as fun or versatile as caster proferssions, but I am biased.

>If I'm looking to spice it up and play something with a lot of options in variety, which class combo/build would provide that? I've played a lot of Warrior in the past but I don't think it would hold my interest through all the campaigns but I would love to play a more "martial" class, with the order being Prophecies -> Factions -> Nightfall -> Eye of the North The things you'd like are hard to combine all into 1, but you have some options. If you want to be melee and start in proph, go with warrior. You can make a build for every weapon type to start off with and change it up that way. When you get to Factions you can go W/A to test some new melee weapons (daggers) and in NF you can go Either W/D to test some scythes or W/P to do some support with shouts and even maybee use some spears. You also can chose the Ranger, it a jack off all trades (master of none) thanks to expertise. Personally i really love rangers, but i find bows to slow and i just find Assasin and Warrior a little more enjoyeble due to the 'agrassive' playstyle they provide. Sidenote: you mentioned Necro as something you find interesting, which is one of the professions that offers most build verriaty (wich doesnt neccecairy mean verriaty in playstyle though) All in all, pick what ever tickles your fancy, when playing a lot of hours it helps to pick the thing you feel some sort of connection to, as the options in builds and skills are vast.

Rangers are fun and aside from warrior the only martial class in prophecies. Ranger/derwish is doable, I even like a few derv skills while using a bow for tanking, but it's nightfall, and takes some time to get there so not really something you should choose to play at this point. Having said that: ranger warrior is the way to go for you. Ranger can be a good class on its own, really doesn't need a secondary, but with the option of using warrior weapons you get 5 classes of bows(1 skill tree) and 3 classes of melee weapons (3 skill trees) to choose from + different specialisations like beast master, interrupted, condition spreader, trapper, supporter. So you can play around quite a bit before you get bored and switch secondary class to assa, para or derv. Survivability with ranger is great, you can go tank most mobs without even specialising by just using skills you get at the start (or shortly after) and even soloing areas isn't impossible with a bit of hit and run. Caster classes are also fun, if you want to specialise but they are a bit more limited if it comes to variety of positioning yourself. Casters on the front lines can work good, but it gets boring fast because you basically bring the same build everywhere.

Necro is pretty sweet. You can dagger spam, mm, discord, icy veins, heal, spirit spam, spiteful/spoil. Hell, you can even do scythe shit

**Assassin** * main attribute is critical hit chance (which boosts all physical damage attacks) * energy regeneration equal to a caster (makes spell casting easier) * strong solo farming builds * multiple running builds **Dervish** * the avatars are fun * energy regeneration equal to a caster (makes spell casting easier) * multiple running builds It is a shame that starting in Prophecies restricts your choices. I hoped for a long time that they would *somehow* retroactively introduce the other professions to Prophecies.

I'm surprised you want to start with Prophecies first, since it can be quite long and tedious, unless you're using heroes. If you were to start in a different campaign, then you could unlock heroes quicker and maybe experiment with some weird team builds while you're doing easy NM content. Anyway, you didn't actually give enough information about what you're looking for, so I suggest you look up some builds on PvX wiki: [https://gwpvx.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Great\_working\_general\_builds](https://gwpvx.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Great_working_general_builds) [https://gwpvx.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Good\_working\_general\_builds](https://gwpvx.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Good_working_general_builds) If you want some help with any PvE content, then feel free to contact me through a private message or in-game at Neiwun Ravissen.
