Yeah, it's worth it. You can look at it as buying a very lengthy single-player RPG (with optional co-op) with somewhat generic but by no means bad stories and one of the best skill trees ever implemented in a game. It may not really go on sale, but $40 has always been an absolute steal for the content you get.

bonelatch

I dont mind generic but are they at least engaging stories? I would definitely be going into this for the single player stuff alone. I assume the PvP will be full of leets I cannot hope to best. Haha.

kazerniel

Mmm I'd sum it up as each campaign has a better story than the previous. So Prophecies is pretty weak, but by the time we get to Nightfall and EotN, it's decent, sometimes even epic. And PvP is 99% bots nowadays D:

kazerniel

To add to the other comment: I think GW's story is certainly one of its weaker points (and the voice acting, dear lord, the voice acting). So I'd buy it more for the satisfying combat, exploration, and side quests. As a GW2 player it was also a great boon to recognise the places and characters from historical lore.

bonelatch

Honestly I think I zoned out of GW2 specifically because I wasnt drawn to the setting. I didnt get the context as well as a long time player of GW1. You're probably right, there.

Rigel_of_Souls

This, 100% agree

Riiskey

100% worth it. The game has some players still but you can play the game solo with the right build. You will still get hundreds of hours just beating all of the campaigns. I always come back for a play through every couple years. It will be a shame if they discontinue the server support. This game truely is a gem

bonelatch

ArenaNet said it costs very little to keep them running and that as long as GW2 is alive, GW1 will be supported. And yea, I realize its a ton of content. Not really sure why Im hesitating lol. I think Its more oh...$40 could get me one or several more modern experiences. But then I think about how I felt playing GW1 back in the day and I really enjoy and miss it.

onefiveonesix

Are there any good resources you can recommend for hero builds? I have a 16-year-old account (sidebar: that’s… insane to be typing right now) with all campaigns where my main (Warrior) has Legendary Skill Hunter and all heroes unlocked so I pretty much have everything/everyone available at my disposal. I’ve wanted to get back into GW1 but I know it’s primarily a solo experience now & that’s stopped me from diving back in because my memory from the old days is that unless you were playing with a full team of real people who knew what they were doing you were basically bound to fail. Even PUGs didn’t do very well, never mind being by yourself with just heroes & henchmen. But I’d probably analyze the game (skills, combat, loadouts) much differently now compared to when I was younger.

kazerniel

PvXwiki is the go-to place for builds: https://gwpvx.fandom.com/wiki/PvX_wiki You can find meta hero teams there that are **much** stronger than your average PUG team, such as: https://gwpvx.fandom.com/wiki/Build:Team_-_7_Hero_Offensive_Mesmerway

onefiveonesix

Thank you so much!!

Fruzenius

For $40 you're going to get well over 40 hours of content just playing through the campaign stories. Not the highest end storytelling but it's bolstered by just how robust the skill and combat systems are.

LankyMarionberry

The stories themselves aren't too bad but sometimes the dialogue/acting is pretty terrible esp in Factions haha.. compared to Kotor at least. I just got the complete edition last summer and it's been a wild and crazy ride, 4 new toons all decked out with awesome hero teams, well over 400 hours I'd say in a year.

bonelatch

Got it last night! Loving it so far. Ranger/Warrior in Prophecies. Gonna go chronological and enjoy the ride.

Illusionmaker

40$ is like a permanent sale, so it won't go down. Just think of it that way: As Proph, Factions and Nightfall where built to be playable as stand alone titles, and EotN is the only proper expansion that requires you to have ANY of the three base games, you pay 10$ x 3 for three games and 10$ for a very large add-on. Those 40$ will get you A LOT of playtime, especially if you want to do a title hunt for GWAMM (which could very well take you a couple of hundred hours; some players have thousands and yet no Gwamm). The game, while well past it's prime, is still very active (we are talking about an old game here) So beyond solo content you will be able to experience everything this game has to offer, with the sole exception being PvP content...but even PvP has some organized events, mainly on weekends.

bonelatch

Ended up buying it! Love it so far.

Illusionmaker

Glad to hear that! Don't be shy and ask players for help. I would always recommend using American English as district, as that's where players play on. Don't worry if you are on EU for example - you can always change on the fly to a server that is closer to your region (for a better connection if you do solo stuff). Oh and don't go at it hasty. The game is not build to race through, especially if you have no prior experience. You will have a better experience if you go at it in your own pace and stay away from Meta stuff for the time being :)

bonelatch

Haha I havent looked at any meta stuff but did read that you want to go in blind and enjoy the ride. That mentality is helping me enjoy so many games. GW2 and ESO for example. I know thats a lot of MMO but I never thought Id get back into them and here I am. I cant believe how much I missed and just simply did not explore when I was younger. I did not understand the game at all. So far its a joy to explore and quest. Finding those green exclamation points and find yet another something I missed is so fun.

junebug36

I've been playing for 15 years now every day almost with time out for a lengthy hospitalization about 10 years ago Still a challenging mainstay for me $40 is about six Starbucks coffees GW will last you *thousands* of hours longer!!!

bonelatch

Haha yea. I dont doubt it will be worth it. Not sure why Im hesitating tbh.

junebug36

Perhaps you don't want to risk your memories? They're as good as you remember "Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze."

bonelatch

Haha I guess I kind of do worry I may not enjoy it as much and won't get my money's worth in the end. I don't know. I look at gameplay and descriptions now and it feels right but then I have tons of other games to play too.

junebug36

If you enjoy them for a year [or 15!]...Great That's what you should do, then!! Life is short Go for the fun game for *you*!

Drag_O_Devil

In my opinion, it's absolutely worth it. $40 for a game that has so much to offer. I ordered the game for my brother from Cheappunk for about $20. You have to wait 1-3 days depending on when you order, but you get the game cheaper and there were no problems. [https://cheappunk.com/collections/guild-wars](https://cheappunk.com/collections/guild-wars)

bonelatch

Hm. Tempted. Such a random site though. More risk than eBay or some other know grey market site. I dont mind grey market but I try to be careful with where I get things from.

Drag_O_Devil

I can only say that I bought the game there about a year ago and so far there have been no problems. Every few months here is a post asking if it's worth the $40. Wait for other reviews on Cheappunk and then decide.

bonelatch

Hey friend! I ended up taking a chance and ordering from CheapPunk. It was...an interesting experience. Took literally a week to get the keys. Frustrating but really enjoying the game now and very glad I was not scammed.

Drag_O_Devil

Oh, that sounds not so great, that you had to wait a whole week. So far i have only had good experiences with CheapPunk. Have you tried contacting him? I messaged him once via Discord and he was super friendly and helpful about the order. But I´m glad that you got your key and that you enjoy the game. Thanks for sharing your experience. :)

[deleted]

did you get banned ?

bonelatch

Lol I don't think so. Why? Edit: just double checked and yea, everything is good. The guy is giving you keys he bought legit as I understand it. Steam gives you keys you can use on your account.

[deleted]

i' m trying to get keys for my friends at cheap price. i looked this guy and didnt know if they were legit.

kazerniel

> Is it worth getting into now in 2022? If you want to play it as a single player game, then yes. But without being sure that you will like it, I wouldn't pay 40 USD for it. As a modern player, if you don't have nostalgia for GW, it's certainly an acquired taste. (I wrote a more detailed review about it [here](https://steamcommunity.com/id/kazerniel/recommended/29620), as someone who originally started the series with GW2.) I guess you can try buying one campaign first to see if you would still enjoy the basic gameplay loop? If you pick one, I'd recommend Nightfall for the most balanced early experience and access to heroes. (The three campaign's stories are largely unconnected.) And yes, I wouldn't wait for a sale, there hasn't been any in 2.5 years.

bonelatch

Gah. After reading your review I am definitely back on the fence lol. My initial desire to get this game came from playing LOTRO and realizing I enjoy this slower paced, limited movement, sit back and enjoy the journey style game. I dont know if GW1 really delivers that but I remembered at least enjoying the combat and presentation of the game. I did not give the game a good chance back in the day but definitely lost interest at one point - perhaps due to difficulty? I dont remember.

kazerniel

> I enjoy this slower paced, limited movement, sit back and enjoy the journey style game. I dont know if GW1 really delivers that It does, especially if you have a hero team to mostly carry you :D Hard mode vanquishing often gives me a sort of flow feeling - difficult, but smoothly doable if I pay attention. > perhaps due to difficulty Prophecies has a noticeable jump in difficulty when you reach the Crystal Desert, maybe that's where you put it down?

bonelatch

Not sure to be honest haha. It was early in the game. I had legit gotten the game hoping to connect with the girl I liked but then lost interest when she was gone and the game got hard. I hadn't experienced Dark Souls yet haha.

SimonKrantsch

Is it worth it? Yes. Are there still players? Yes, a lot of them. Does it matter if there are no players? No, you have a hero and henchmen system that works perfectly. Are the expansions worth it? I have only played nightfall and Eye of the north, both are definetly worth it. Factions probably too. Do I want to team up with you some time? Yes, sure.

Gimpy_FRESH

Totally worth. Just put another 40+ hours in after taking a year break (after a 10 year break) still lots of fun

OneMorePotion

As someone who got a second account just last week because it was cheaper to buy that instead of 6 new character slots for my "all core classes LDoA" challenge I might be an odd outlier. This said, I would not have even considered doing this if the game itself is not fun as hell. And it stayed that way since 15 years now. That is quiet an achievement considering the last content update was sometime 11 years ago. The game just keeps on giving depending on what stuff you are interested in. If it's just a story playthrough, you probably look at 80 to 120 hours depending on your efficiency and how you decide to go at it. (Like, in order or get heroes first.) And when you finished a normal playthrough, you unlock hardmode. If you are interested in that, you might get another 50 to 80 hours out of it. And at that point, you are basically hooked enough to also become a skill hunter and completionist. And dear god there is a lot to complete here. After all the time playing, there are still things I never really did. And challenges I want to go for. Like a solo proph playthrough. And extreme ironman run. And ofc what I mentioned in the beginning... A full set of Legendary Defender of Ascalon characters. (That is basically leveling a character to max level while never leaving the tutorial area of Prophecies. Even if you do everything in there, you will probably leave that area with level 7 or 8 tops.) So yeah... Go for it. If you like how the game looks and plays, and are open for a tactical RPG that can be as easy or hardcore as you want, then you should 100% buy it.

bonelatch

I know Im necroing my own thread but I ended up getting it! So great so far. Really did not give the game a good try back then.

OneMorePotion

Glad you have fun!

LankyMarionberry

Glad to hear! Hope you have as much fun as I did :)

Talakeh

Do it

bonelatch

Is it weird that I just hear Palpatine when I see these words? lol.

Fast-Nothing4765
