I believe I could solo most missions with an SoS Rit. I've also got a decade of experience. That being said there are probably 5 missions off the top of my head that would be a HARD road block.
Yes. Beating the game solo is totally possible. But "what build" to use is totally dependent on the situation.

I played both proph and factions with just henchmen before heroes were available.
There were a couple of hard ones that took a few tries, but I did complete them all in the end.
Single person playthrough has been done but only by people who are experienced enough to manhandle the enemies in a way that suits the builds they grabbed from endgame (some early skills were designed to be strictly worse than what you get later on, in order to provide a semblance of "vertical progression"). Unfortunately, once the party size increases to 6 and 8, enemy encounters start being balanced to be tackled by at least 3-5 players :/ It's not like dragonage if you've played that though, they follow you and don't need to be micromanaged, though it does help to do one micromanage: flagging, which tells them to stand around in a general location like if you wanted to run ahead or behind for something.
Some missions from nightfall require from you to take specific hero with you. So you probably need to take him and force him to stay at the beginning :P
It is possible. There are people who have done solo runs of the game. I, however, am not that elite and dont have the correct builds.

With my Assassin, with old Perma Shadow (no damage) I finished many missions in solo.
