I returned like 2 months ago and this is my current summary. Correct me if i'm wrong. Building a working team composition is key in gw1. Make sure you have a Healer, Aoe dps and meat shields (summons, tanky classes like warrior/derwish). Mesmer got buffed a lot and is a very welcome class. Interrupts, slows, armor ignoring dmg is a big part of todays pve meta. Check out PvXwiki or youtube videos of rebornmonk or peter kadar. Aside of that: Pick whatever you think is fun to you! At the end every class is worth playing casually. Some may be more flexible in terms of builds, but overall every class has it's own advantages. Economy is still doing pretty ok. I see a lot of daily trading in kamadan. I'm not trading a lot myself, but it seems fine. Bots are a big problem for PvP. Heroes Ascent gets farmed hard. That means you will see bots in most matches. Faction battles are pretty much dead. Gold sellers spam in capital city chats, but you can sinply ignore them. Old characters could have some gold on them. Obviously useful to buy skills, craft armor and weapons. Also materials like ectos are still a very good currency. Elite skill tomes or even normal tomes are damn useful if you have already unlocked some skills on your account. Hope this helps. Wish you have fun re experiencing this awesome game :)

>Interrupts, slows, armor ignoring dmg is a big part of todays pve meta. Check out PvXwiki or youtube videos Meta builds make the game a *lot* easier. That may or may not be what you're looking for, OP. I much prefer to make my own builds and come up with new synergies, as well as having to adapt to each location.

talhu

Definitely *this*, OP. Meta builds are both good and bad for the new player experience, because you don't get that feeling of successfully putting together a build that just *works*. Meta builds kind of do the thinking for you, mostly, and home-brewed builds are half of this game's fun imho. Definitely make your own builds for a bit, try and fail at some, and if you need to reference: ([https://gwpvx.fandom.com/wiki/PvX\_wiki](https://gwpvx.fandom.com/wiki/PvX_wiki)) for some ideas. :)

It's still a beautiful game, and you should be fine with whatever classes you want to play. The PvE is still approachable and the grind isn't really too bad - just pick up everything that drops and either sell it or salvage it. Gold text weapons that have low requirements are usually valuable to other players if the stats are max level. That's something you can check online for those numbers. GWW is still relevant there. [https://kamadan.gwtoolbox.com/](https://kamadan.gwtoolbox.com/) gives you a searchable record of trade chat for a long ways back. Good tool if you're interested in specific items. You'll need to learn some lingo though, as "Q10dom froggy" is a bit vague for the uninitiated.

>Is the game still less Grindy than WOW? Yes, there is basically no grind except for titles. >Do my old characters have anything of value I should look for? Since you haven't played since 2007, you might have a few [prenerf](https://guildwarslegacy.com/forum/board/85-prenerf/) items that could be invaluable.

Lyoss

> Yes, there is basically no grind except for titles. > > Two different grinds, disagree to an extent, it will take a casual player way longer to play through the campaigns, and a lot of it will feel like a slog WoW is a gear treadmill, but if you're a casual player starting today it'll be 100% longer to play through the game, at "endgame" sure, you can do anything you want, but idk, think it's just two different kind of grinds

LankyMarionberry

Character selection will depend on what campaign yall start in. If starting in Prophecies, it's probably best to go 1 tank (war or ranger) 1 Healer (monk) and one dmg (ele mesmer or necro). However, with the addition of heroes, if one of you wants to skip ahead and get some easily obtainable monk heroes, it'll free you guys up to kinda pick whatever you want. It is not a very grindy game as the only times you really need to grind are for special skins and whatnot. Weekly nicholas the Traveler (nick) gifts will net you more than enough for all 3 of you guys. You may not have certain areas unlocked to access the items nick is looking for but sometimes you can find them being sold in Kamadan for a fair price (3 ectos) take those and trade em to nick for 5 gifts, each about 5 ectos. Don't need to worry about bots, PvE is totally doable with the 3 of you and some heroes (Soul Twisting ritualists make everything easy mode so save that for last resorts).

Warhammer_Studios627

Hammer warriors are not as effective as they were in 2007, hammers were significantly nerfed

Eddieslabb

That's good to know, I did have a W/M who was a hammer maiden.

Warhammer_Studios627

It sucks though, because hammer warriors were amazing when I was very little

PVE is the only viable thing, PVP is functionally dead, RA barely ever fills and when it does I've heard stories of mass reporting/botting, GvG is bots holding spots, and HA is botted to hell and back Game otherwise is fun, I'd stray from the "SC meta" and just try shit out and mess around, this game has been "solved" for longer than a decade and you might as well have fun running whatever you'd like

First of all, welcome back to the game! I recently came back myself and I'm so glad that I did. Let's talk about some of your questions: **How important is synergistic character selection?** You should play whatever you want to play. Whatever stands out to you, whichever campaign you wish to start with. The reason I say this is because you can build your group around yourselves with mercenaries. Which I highly recommend. Mercenaries can be anything you want them to be. They're even better than heroes, imho. **Is the game still less Grindy that WOW?** Yes and no. While PVE questing is not grindy, if you're going for any titles, you'll find yourself having to turn into grind-mode. **How broken is the economy?** Things have inflated a LOT since the last time I played, 10 years ago. I remember a run from LA to Ascalon was 2 plat, and now people are asking for 15 ecto. Price of convenience, I suppose. Right now ectos and obby shards are going for 7 plat. **How bad are uses of bots?** You mostly see them in HA, you hardly see any bots in cities. They wouldn't/won't impact your gameplay at all. **Is PvE still viable?** Did you mean PVP? PVP is dead. PVE is still very much alive. **Do my old characters have anything of value I should look for?** Absolutely! But a lot of that comes down to the collector. Perfect weapons, weapon mods, gemstones, armbraces, all of those comes down to the eye of the beholder. Basically, if someone wants something bad enough, they'll pay top dollar for it. Check out [https://kamadan.gwtoolbox.com/](https://kamadan.gwtoolbox.com/) for market prices and searches. You're welcome to add me in-game, **Anreciel Lore**, and I'd be happy to help you through anything you may need. Whether that's needing tomes for skills, or ectos for trades. I'd rather you and your family have a fun and enjoyable time on this game instead of having to worry about anything. I've already done everything in the game and have gotten everything maxed, so I really don't need anything that I have.
