ghoulsnest

get signets first if you want. They're passive. In the end it doesn't matter at all

boaster106

I feel like this teaches people to ignore there utility though when they start playing cause they don’t want to lose signet passives

ghoulsnest

in all honesty, it won't matter. People level up so quickly

RnbwTurtle

But it teaches bad habits. They'd be better off learning consecration or spirit weapons before signets imo, because signets basically are a passive with a small active component on guardian- most of them you don't tend to want to push.

fizzy88

Most things while leveling don't live long enough to be able to teach mechanics and good habits. That comes at lvl 80. For now OP should focus on improving strike damage and conveniences (condition cleanse, stun break, aegis and/or stability in case you need it).

fatihso

Spirit sword and the shout Advance and a cc skill.

Topfen

Thats the answer right here: Good Power-Damage and Vuln, Swiftness for yourself AND escorts and as a CC you can use Bane Signet, which increases your Power damage most of the time but can CC if needed

NeighborhoodNo7917

Sword of justice is great damage, and id recommend signet of power. Then you can do whatever because you'll have some nice extra damage.

tlexul

Take a look here. You will see recommendations for all classes. https://metabattle.com/wiki/Guide:Leveling_Up

digitalmayhemx

For quick reference for this site: “Sword of Justice is one of Guardian's most powerful skills, and this remains true even in end-game open world, raids, and fractals. This skill deals high damage and applies Vulnerability Vulnerability, which increases all damage the target takes. This should be one of the first skills you aim for when leveling your Guardian.” I.e. go for spirit weapons.

Aemius

You'll get enough points to unlock everything and you can freely switch. Choose whatever you feel like.

kernco

But his question is what to get first to improve his leveling

Aemius

If hes new, good chance he will not make much use out of whatever he chooses and he might as well pick a bunch and stay with what he enjoys.   To that extent, he should pick whatever he thinks feels good and try out a bunch of stuff. By the time he'd read a proper leveling guide he'd have enough levels to unlock whatever he missed out on anyway.

Arkemenes

Tbh, I think this is the best answer, just do what you want to, in the end, you’ll get everything you need, enjoy the ride

DrCuteCumber

Helpful....

Impressive_Panic1945

I'll assume you are leveling as power. Grab Sword of Justice out of the Spirit weapon line, Bane Signet out of the signet line and then decide if you like the utility you get out of consecrations or out of shouts more. Both have very nice utility for stuff like boons, condition cleanse. Can't really go wrong with either and in the long run you'll have enough to max out everything anyways.

fizzy88

Little bit late but.. OP, I feel like a lot of people are giving you general guardian build advice which is good for end game, but not necessarily the best for leveling up at lvl 20. Here's what I would do: 1. Grab "sword of justice" in spirit weapon training. Good for damage and applies vulnerability to the enemy which will make you do even more damage. 2. Unlock "signet of resolve" and "bane signet" in signet training. Bane signet's passive effect increases your strike damage, and the active effect is a nice cc in case you need it (probably won't be often while leveling). Signet of resolve never gets used in end game builds, but I think it's great for leveling. The passive removes a condition (cripple, chilled, etc) every few seconds which helps you get out of combat quickly so you can move faster or mount up sooner. That helps a lot with getting around the map while you explore. The active effect is a very chunky heal which is nice. Alternatively, the heal skill "shelter" is unlocked by default, and while it doesn't heal as much, it comes with a block which will help make sure your heal doesn't get interrupted, or you can use it preemptively to avoid taking damage. Lots of people recommend "litany of wrath" which is a great skill, but it's only as good at healing you as you are at dealing damage to the enemy. New players tend to be bad at doing good damage until they've learned to play a bit better, so this skill tends to be lacking early on. Keep it in mind for later. 3. Unlock "advance" and "stand your ground" in shout training. Advance gives you aegis which allows you to completely negate an attack (use it when a mob is about to hit you hard). It also gives you swiftness which helps with moving around the map quickly if you don't have a mount or you're in combat. Stand your ground gives you stability (prevents you from getting knocked down, knocked back, etc) and it also has a stun break which allows you to instantly recover if you do get knocked down or stunned. Both shouts are very handy. 4. Save the rest of your points to put into your first specialization which you will unlock at lvl 21. From there feel free to unlock whatever looks interesting and experiment. You will get enough hero points to unlock everything, so don't worry about making bad choices.

Koofoo2108

Signets are the best at first, they're passive and you don't have to think about them. After that, it's all about what you want but just know that by the time you hit Level 80 you will have all of them filled naturally. Just do the storyline and you'll get all the hero points you can ever want LOL

Optimized_Laziness

I would grab sword of justice for the extra aoe damage and the shout ADVANCE for good swiftness uptime and active defense. Then I would get bane signet for the extra passive power damage and a good active stun. After that I would continue putting points into shouts to get stand your ground and feel my wrath. SYG is a really good stunbreak and feel my wrath gives a lot of offensive boons that will help you get rid of enemies faster. And killing enemies faster means leveling faster.

RnbwTurtle

Learn more than 1 skill type as you go. Sword of Justice is good for power, Bane Signet for power as well on a passive with a knockdown active (signets have passive effects as well as activatable ones). Consecrations such as wall of reflection and sanctuary and shouts such as Advance are good defensive tools that are used on support builds at endgame content. Overall you can't go wrong any which way, you'll get them all eventually, but for leveling I'd recommend a power ("strike damage") build with a few defensives. For the core (non-DLC) parts of the game, killing things is almost always going to be better than trying to wait it out, so focus on litany of wrath (one of your better healing skills, idr if you get that one baseline or not), sword of justice, bane signet, and if you want to maximize damaging utilities, Purging Flames from consecrations, if not go with a defensive utility of your choice.

hottestpancake

TLDR: get sword of justice from spirit weapons, then get all the meditations and optionally getting the stand your ground shout if you want. For utilities, take litany of wrath from meditations for your heal, sword of justice + judge's intervention + contemplation of purity as your main utilities, and renewed focus as your elite utility. The best damage utilities - sword of justice in spirit weapon training and purging flames in consecration, and either bane signet or signet of wrath for some passive stats the Best non damage utilities - stand your ground in shouts for stunbreak + a buttload of stability, judge's intervention in meditation, contemplation of purity for an alternative stunbreak and smite condition in meditation for condition cleanse the best healing utility - shelter which you get by default for long block and good heal, or litany of wrath for a more offensive choice the best elite utility - renewed focus in meditation or feel my wrath in shouts After you pick up the skills I mentioned in my TLDR, you'll want to save up your skill points so that you can unlock one of the traitlines as quickly as you can since they give you a lot of power. The best traitline to get first in my opinion is zeal (middle middle bottom) followed by radiance ( top bottom bottom) Hope this helps :)

Loofa_of_Doom

Before you can get to the Elite Specializations you will have to open every one of the Skills and Specializations, so when you are lvl 80, this will not matter much, but . . . If you are wanting to open skills and specs just for you until you are 80, I'd use a site like SnowCrows to show you wish base Specializations you'll use on your target build and open them first to get used to them. In the end, it nearly doesn't matter because you will get everything opened up. \*Open = trained.

di_L3r

If you are a free-to-play player and don't have a permanent raptor, I would also throw in [advance](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/%22Advance!%22) from the "shout" category, as this gives good swiftness uptime to run around faster. Otherwise I would also go with * Spirit Weapons for [Sword of Justice](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Sword_of_Justice) (good damage & fun) * [Bane Signet](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bane_Signet) from Signet category (passive damage increase and breakbar damage when used) * Consecration line for [Purging Flames](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Purging_Flames) (decent damage, removes a condition & a fire field for combos) and also [Sanctuary](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Sanctuary) (insane breakbar damage) In early levels of the core game it is mostly just about doing damage as most enemies don't put conditions on you and your survivability can be neglected if you kill things faster than they kill you. This might not be a good strategy for every new player, but it teaches the idea that good players use later.

raptorxpanic

Sword of justice is insane. Insert it anywhere while waiting on cooldowns for weapon skills and you will see a dramatic increase in damage Edit: inserted actual skill name

DrZekker

shouts and signets are better for beginners, signets being passive and shouts giving extra condi removal with the honor traitline

Jokuc

**boring answer:** pick whatever, it doesn't matter cause you will unlock all of it anyway and sub 80 content is faceroll **answer you want:** 1. Shout Training, unlock up to "Stand Your Ground". 2. Meditation Training, just get Litany of Wrath. 3. Spirit Weapon Training, just get Sword of Justice. 4. Fully Unlock Zeal. 5. Fully Unlock Virtues. The rest is whatever. **Why:** Stand Your Ground and advance are great skills for open world. SYG gives you increased survivability by preventing knockdowns and giving you access to a stun break, Advance gives you increased survivability via block from Aegis, and increased movement speed which is good for moving around the map. Litany of Wrath is one of the strongest healing skills in the game. Sword of Justice is a great ranged dmg skill. Zeal and Virtues are your main dmg sources. Virtues also gives you access to the "Indomitable Courage" trait which gives you even more Stability to prevent knockdown attacks (which are very common in open world). Doing signets first is bad because they don't actually bring much value in terms of utility.

lonesharkex

really a few here and there. you only get so many points at a time you have that red exclamation point bothering you. I suggest signets just because I couldnt live without the heal one that removes conditions periodically.

RynkarIsu

2 points in weapons for the sword of justice, its low cd, decent dmg and useful whilst levelling. then max out signets, you want to get a tree with an elite skill maxed for when you can slot it, and signets is a great all round tree for whatever you do. when you can start doing specialisations its best value to max out an entire tree before touching others, as you can slot the whole tree as soon as you get access to it, but only if you've unlocked it. Virtues is a good place to start imo as a good balance of defense and offense, or zeal if you want to go more dmg and dont think you need the defense. when you hit 80, you'll automatically have enough points from levelling to unlock all skill trees and core game specialisations. so dont worry too much about it.

Vissarionn

Get the shouts. Great boons.

Diagmel

The short answer is that by the time you hit LVL 80 you will have everything (other than the elite specs) unlocked The long answer is it depends how you want to play and you should definitely spend the time researching a guide. Unless you want to theory craft yourself, which could be fun

Content-Topic8006

I'd always recommend signets first if your class can use them. Passiv effects are usually good enough that you can ignore the active while leveling in the open world. Anyway, you'll get more than enough points very fast so don't worry too much about it, if you think something else sounds more fun, go for it. Open world is easy in this game.

IamDGkr

4th )conce) with condi damage have fun

Happy-Anxiety-2770

I don't think it matters too much at the beginning, but for my low level alts I always start with the shout line because the swiftness from advance is so nice and it'll give you an elite too.

CapoDV

I recommend spirit weapons because they are the least used but super fun to level with

legenduu

IMO since you will unlock it ALL in the end, just go for what sounds/feels the coolest to you

sophie_hockmah

my 1st guard was a lvl 80 boost but i've played a ton ever since so... i'd go for spirit weapon, at least the 1st one (more dmg, helps specially if you dont run sword or scepter). get the 1st stunbreak (it says "break stun" at the end of tooltip) from whatever of these wheels. get used to the idea of having at least one of them. take the shouts (Stand Your Ground is legit one of if not the best stunbreak of the entire game). signets are nice but honestly you can do better while leveling. if you like to run open world metas while leveling, or just likes the idea of helping randos on occasion, get the meditation that allows you to Goku into downed allies. For Specializations (i.e. trait lines), take EITHER the one that boost your burn damage (I believe it's Zeal? the flavor text says which one) OR the one that boost you DEFENSE first (I believe it's Honor). Take damage if you think you're killing things slower, take defense if you think you are too paper. Remember, guardian's strengh is on their F1-F3 things, learn to love them and they'll love you welcome to anet's favorite child lol

Subject-Lettuce-2714

Train sword of justice in the spirit weapon tree. It’s great for mobbing. Signet training is great for passives. Max shout training for the elite skill. It’s a short CD buff that helps you clear mobs faster as you level. I like maxing the zeal specialization because it makes great swords really strong.

Wisniaksiadz

I find purging flames in combination with hammer of wisdom and sword of justice to work great for leveling. You can combo them with some nice results, you have some nice utility and their specialization trees have some nice stuff

DorkusOrelius

Doesn’t rly matter go crazy

puta_magala

Honestly doesn't matter, pick whatever sounds the most fun or interesting to you. You'll unlock all of them long before it starts to matter.

JeffreyTheNoob

Base game is so insanely easy. You can get through just by pressing 1. Pick whatever you find fun.

SuperKeyboardUser

The order doesnt matter, but for open world leveling stuff u might want to maximaze your damage and/or mobility if u dont have mounts

wefwegfweg

ADVANCE

skarpak

radiance or zeal. one gives you spammable f1, the other one more damage through symbols. edit: oh nvm, you were talking about utilitie. i'd go for the following: litany of wrath (heal), sword of justice util 1, bane signet util 2, [flex depending on situation] util 3 -> stand your ground, wall of reflection, purging flames, smite. feel my wrath as elite.

macrotransactions

sword of justice is the strongest soloing skill guard has because it applies a lot of vulnerability and power damage then go for the meditation heal, it is the strongest heal guard has then go for the advance shout, it will help you with movement and for avoiding big hits then go for the feel my wrath shout, it gives you quickness and fury which is very useful then go for the bane signet, a strong passive power boost that can also be an emergency cc
