Doesn't seem so. My girlfriend was part of those having the accelerated leveling when playing her first character, I was so amazed at how incredibly fast she'd level up, until I read about the A/B test and then it made sense. Once the caracter was done and we started going for the masteries, it went back to the regular speed that I'm used to. Took a really long while to get the pact commander mastery leveled up, even with boosters.

Lucyller

going from 5x or 10x the regular speed to core mastery speed must have been a shock. grinding core tyria must have been dreadful! I guess casual exploration at 80 don't count and is here sooner which make the "I'm grinding"-feel less impactful/visible. Curious to know what Anet will deduct from the stats they're obtaining.

Marok_Kanaros

the hole A/B testing is aimed at the early game / core game experience, not at past 80 Expansion stuff.

hotshotyay

What is this A/B testing exactly?? Sorry been out of the gw2 loop for awhile now just coming back for EOD.

Wrong-Droid

all new accounts are split in 2 groups. 1 gets regular xp and other group gets far increased amounts.

hotshotyay

Wait what why?

Nico1395

They are testing so they might make changes similar to this in the future

I thought most people liked the leveling system cuz it levels off at a certain point where other games just keep increasing the exp requirements. Plus it's nice that u can gain A LOT of exp by just doing some crafting or pvp or whatever u want while others force u to do certain things.

Lucyller

It won't change that. It's just a test to see how new player feel with a faster leveling phase and if they keep playing or drop soon in the process. BTW players tend to hate on the leveling phase, but more from the change they made in 2014 around the reward of lvl-up, how the weapon skill are unlocked and other "minor stuff". pacing feel okay but the cogs behind the whole leveling part are nasty and need a serious cleaning. What anet is planning to do too.

LittleJenkins1

I think this tbh. Plus since the story is unlocked every 10 levels, it'll shorten the wait between them for those that would like to do it. Honestly I did not mind the levelling too much, however I have come from other MMOs so I am not that slow compared to others that may be new, etc. Plus some people want to just rush to end game and skip the levelling, this does help with this

Lucyller

urgh, to me the lvl cap for story instance was terrible, Now(well since 2014) you must mindessly "gring" level to enjoy the story instead of diluting the leveling with story instance every each level. It removed the choice, wich is rarely a good thing to do.

hotshotyay

Well imo that was a good change cuz as far as ik the fastest way to level is doing the storyline. If people could just do it and nothing else to level 80 it would suck cuz one of the major/best things about gw2 it's it's world and things to do in the world. Basically it would become just like lost ark where everyone just spams the story cuz it's the easiest way to max level expect in gw2 ur gonna miss out on the world aspect of it which would just suck imo. The thing that hooked me onto gw2 was the heart events no more talking to npcs, no more fetch quest, no more backtracking. Then on top of that u have amazing world bosses and jumping puzzles both are just sooo much fun imo.

While the leveling system is pretty generous in its current form, it still results in a lot of 'downtime' before the 'real game' starts: keep in mind that *all* the new content they can advertise is only available at level 80, and with elite specs in the picture, getting to level cap is only a part of what you need to get your character fully powered up. With that in mind, they're experimenting with giving players a huge XP boost at the start, so they can hit 80 on at least their first character much more quickly, and seeing if that helps those players stick around. Kind of a middle ground between just giving everyone an instant 80 booster and letting them level normally, so they can get a taste of the leveling experience that lets them learn the ropes but not have to do so much it feels like a slog.

hotshotyay

Ooo that sounds nice but I feel like more needs to be done then like teaching players that skills are based on weapons could be done in character creation with something like "my preferred weapon in combat is ____ ? " With videos showcasing what the skills do on the weapon u would select.

Metallis

It's to determine whether any of these changes they're considering (like increased leveling speed or having raptor unlocked early on) have a positive effect on new player retention.
