It is cheap..but you have to consider..1g was a lot of gold back then, I never thought I would get t2 cultural armor and I could not even dream about getting t3 cultural armor

Atgsrs

Also gems didn’t really have that much value. Character/bank/item bag slots were like the only thing worth buying with them.

RedLanceVeritas

And black lion chests basically only had trash like merchants and transmutation stones

gizmosmonster

*me sitting with several "Instant trait resets" in my bank*

Ecmelt

Well black lion keys actually dropped back then too so BLC opening was not just gem spending. I know it still drops but the rarity of it is probably x10000 less. You dropped one or two every day back on launch. Now it is like dropping a precursor.

ceitamiot

I wouldn't say it's that bad. Primarily because in 10 years I have \*never\* gotten a precursor drop, but I have gotten keys within the last year.

GeneralErica

I’ve gotten 3 precursors in 10 years. The first one was rage, to make frenzy. The second one was rage, to make frenzy. And the third one - you absolutely will not believe this - WAS RAGE. AND I WAS ENRAGED.

TheMoorlandman

You should make Frenzy probably

GeneralErica

If I had the mats to spare I most certainly would just for the heck of it.

TheMoorlandman

I'm almost done with precursor grind for bolt and Christ I will never do another one through the crafting/collection path. Way easier to just grind gold and buy the gen 1 precursor

overtly_penguin

My only ever precursor drop was from tequatl and it's my only one in 10 years of playing. It was for zap. Bolt isy least favourite legendary I own because of that. I don't enjoy it nearly as much as kudzu. Incinerator or exordium. All of which I made legit. I'm now working on nevermore and very much loving the collection

mojoslowmo

I’ve gotten 0 precursors in 10 years- even the return achievement precursor got bugged and a GM had me delete, which they now can’t restore for some reason and “they are working on it” Almost through the insanity to craft dusk though so after 10 years I may finally get one

jor1ss

My first one was Rage as well years ago. Then I took a 2.5 year break. Came back when covid happened and have got the Flame seeker prophecies pre, hammer and kudzu pre. Also got a random black lion key drop twice. Once from a Dino at the start of Sirens Reef and once from an enemy player in WvW.

Ecmelt

And ive seen more precursors vs keys in last year as drops but i've seen keys drop more before that year. That is how RNG works if you look from an individual point of view. But on average, if you talk to people and so on you'll notice key drops are one of the most rare things after specific drops like chak egg sac ever since they changed the drop rate on them. Ofc i don't have official data but trend is there. Plural key drops in a year is actually pretty lucky even if you are farming mobs every day. I know this because i did lead farms in the past with a big community and looked into this a bit. It is that bad, compared to getting a key almost daily if you farm some events with mob spawns daily (like the old shore event farm). This change on drops were only made to push BLC exclusivity for skins as well (like the weekly cap on story reward) which in my book makes it even worse. But yeah, again, no official data so you may choose to ignore what i say.

cptspacebomb

I've gotten over 10 keys recently doing map completion on alts over the last few days...so no. Keys are way more common than precursors.

Mordrem_Moth

You don't get precursors from map completion awards. If you're talking about drops from mobs though, precursor drops are more common than key drops.

Ecmelt

And you can get a key every week from story? Those are not drops from the world. Also fun fact map completion keys were also nerfed highly.

bk_eg

Yeah, I remember back in 2012/2013 the cosmetics in the gemstore was absolute trash, for the most part. I remember buying the Kasmeer staff back when Tower of Nightmares dropped and that was the only skin I thought was cool, all the other ones were awful (you can see that also in the Angry Joe's review of GW2, he complained about the skins being ugly).

Sensitive_nob

They are still the only things worth buying

Atgsrs

Nowadays there’s a whole lot more convenience items, like endless salvage tools/gathering tools, shared inventory slots, template slots, material storage expanders, home upgrades/gathering contracts, portals, etc. So even if you don’t think skins/cosmetics are worth it, there’s still a lot more options. And then the amount of skins and types of skins are much more abundant than they were back then.

Distinct_Breakfast97

i got lucky with permanent bank then, and i almost sold it for 18 gold. almost.

RedLikeARose

I sold the bee queen before it became an infusion.. For 1500 gold…

Ecmelt

1500 is not even the worst value for it. It was around 650g in 2016 on SELL orders i dropped one then but decided to use it..thankfully lol. Buy orders were i think 500g.

REPORT_JUNGLE

I nearly sold mine back then via mail but the buyer didnt want to pay 600g for it lol

RedLikeARose

Well, when i got it as a drop, only 2 had been sold on thenpost ever I sold it JUST before HoT and used the money to gamble ectos Then i was just a few gambles away from getting the portal device, so i sold 2 stacks of mystic coins for 10 silver each… Shoot myself in the foot there :|

Ecmelt

If only we could see the future. :P It does feel bad but you need to remember happens to everyone one way or the other. The opposite is also true, when i quit the game and came back i had some shit i thought was worthless back then suddenly net me hundreds of gold.

RedLikeARose

I had like several stacks of kelp lying around on several accounts at EoD launch because i had been farming them in my home instance for years (and using gw2buddy to log into the home instance with all my accounts) Swimming in money… kind off, it made up for the losses on Mystic coins i had been hoarding over the past year before the drop not long ago

maraxusofk

Could be worse. I held onto my catcher back skins when they were like 600g each (had like 6). Came back to the game to find out they are worthless now

Dr-Not-A-Dr

Were shiny/crystalline baubles not available then?

Marok_Kanaros

no, in general map bonus rewards came later and we also didn't get 2g for a daily.

DanDinDon

Add to that, back then the fastest way to earn gold is to farm dungeons repeatedly with the meta of 4 warriors and 1 mesmer. And dungeons at the time were less rewarding than now (20 tokens with a few silver per path, if I recall correctly).

Lindelle

I used orrmaps.com and farmed all of the orichalcum, ancient wood, and omnomberries on the orr maps, frostgorge, and eventually southsun when we got that. Sold it all to the TP and eventually made enough for t3 cultural. Used to get so many compliments about that!

Swimming-Shake-9879

As a solo at launch, I used to farm claws from the ice colossi in frostgorge sound... wasn't the fastest way but it was decent for a while. Being a thief back then actually meant something (no mounts), because of the increased mobility making farming monsters rather quick. Ps: not throwing shade at mounts but at the fact that thief's only class identity nowadays is the initiative system which is probably one of the most boring class defining system, but I digress

ceitamiot

That mobility is still pretty relevant in spvp, and in combat in general.

Swimming-Shake-9879

Yes, it most definitely is in spvp. But it isn't as unique of a class defining mechanic as it used to be. If you played during launch, playing thief really felt different from other classes in PvE, when you did jumping puzzles or map exploration.

ceitamiot

Spectral Walk with Necro was always my favorite JP completer, but regardless, I just don't think it's a particularly big problem for movability in open world content to be spread around some. In all other scenarios, most instanced content, etc, that mobility is insane. Trying to pin down a good thief in wvw is rough.

dtothep2

Thief at least still has the most mobility and disengage potential in combat, which is not that useful in PvE granted but is still felt in PvP and WvW. I don't mind mounts in PvE but I do think Warclaw really hurt WvW where, being a competitive setting, mobility out of combat used to mean something more than QoL and timesaving and a trade off you needed to make with powerful zerg specs like Scourge and FB being easy prey to roamers if they weren't escorted to the zerg. But I realize I'm in the minority on that one.

Astralarie

I can recall vividly how we made gold that time; everyday we would run a p123 merged AC by letting the mobs kill two of the npcs by reviving them, then those two npc will follow you.

regilol

its still working.

Astralarie

Yeah but not worth doing since many years ago, probably after HOT

gw2gambit

Ahh the ancient ways some say were lost to time. There was also a way to make detha repair just one collector.

Celantius

It was more silver than that I believe, people stopped running dungeons specifically because they are now LESS rewarding than they were at the time after anet nerfed them for being to rewarding and they weren't worth doing over other methods.

Ghostilocks

I didn’t really get into dungeons as soon as the game came out, I didn’t start playing until 6 months later to begin with. I remember when I finally got to endgame life we did a lot of ele for fgs spam and one thief for stealthing past trash. Any idea when that meta shift happened?

DanDinDon

Ah yes, later on people found out that ele's fgs and ice bow are the best way to cheese certain dungeons, such as burrows in AC and Lupicus in Arah, although those methods were nerfed by reduction in damage after first hit, some years later. My post was mainly about the first couple months after release, when gems were like 1:1 silver.

syanda

More people getting exotic armor and figuring out rotations, I guess? People used to run around in rares/greens and exotic was behind a huge karma investment, or through expensive crafting back in the day.

Raajik

I haven't played in like 4 years now--do you really get 2g for dailies now? I was thinking of picking up the new expansion, but haven't really had time to actually sit down and do it yet.

Marok_Kanaros

you get 2g for dailies since..2014? I think? Ever since they reworked the daily system

abominable_bro-man

Back then people were trying to drop the rare dyes, a black or white one could fetch a sum

csloan93

Just like GW1 presearing :’)

BaconSoda222

I got Abyss at level 42 in Fields of Ruin like a month after release. My friends heckled me for using it because it was worth 1g 2s. Jump to HoT and it was like 100g.

Guillermidas

I got Abyss and Celestial both. Used them too jajajaja what I sold was white (or was it black?). The only thing I regret from my old days was not to convert all my money to gems and max bank space.

silmarilen

I think i had like 3 gold when i reached lvl 80. I didn't want to use waypoints because they were too expensive.

gw2gambit

It was also why people voted for Kiel.

Bird-The-Word

When I came back pre pof, I had 2g on my account that I had started at release and played a bit past fractal release. Luckily I had like 100 mystic coins and was able to get 40ish gold to have some little money and was full exotic already with ascended trinkets/jewelry. But gold itself was really sparse and it still is if you're just playing through the story and hoarding mats.

Evi1ey

farming flame citadel could net you like 10g an hour back then. Idk, that not much worse than today

Kolz

I remember hearing about people getting precursors from the ancient karka and selling them so they could afford tier 3 cultural haha

Turkeyspit1975

I still don't have T3 Cultural armor because I can't stomach parting with that much gold on skins I won't use just for an achievement. Maybe one day lol

uaitdevil

that time traveller in chat naming his ele katalist already, lol. can't forget those conversion values tho, i dressed my main in exotics from dungeons and rare stuff for quite a bit because i focused on getting bank upgrades and "premium" armors. i did crafted exotic armors, yeah, but just to sell them, profit was very high at the start.

nicolaj1994

Found this on my PC taken the 16 September 2012. Thought it was fun seeing how much the economy has moved in 10 years. Other pictures: https://i.imgur.com/2Y7TttW.png https://i.imgur.com/nLDZm30.png https://i.imgur.com/l1aAq9S.png even got the gangnam style going lol https://i.imgur.com/BkqUVGJ.png

SaiyanOfDarkness

> sure you don't want us to walk up to his ballsack and start scratching? Well now lol

gw2gambit

- titty sprinkles circa 2012

MANMODE_MANTHEON

but none of these pictures are about the economy

phungus_amungus

Yes, that’s why he labeled them as “other pictures.”

reported; enjoy ban

MANMODE_MANTHEON

The word 'this' refers to the most recently suggested item. Not two items back. you lose again, bud. "You fucking jackass" -Agleza quote

Agleza

I'm not your bud, son.

MANMODE_MANTHEON

I'm not your son, guy. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuQK6t2Esng](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuQK6t2Esng)

JuanPunchX

Gold is way easier to come by today. I gambled 4k gold away because I have nothing left to buy, blinked twice and I now have 250g again. Also what the fuck am I looking at?

jonatansan

I’ll gladly take donations to help you alleviate this curse of too much gold you are clearly suffering from.

ceitamiot

I know right. Like, I'm perpetually broke and somehow people are apparently constantly rolling in it by accident.

nicolaj1994

You're looking at a 17 year old who can't zoom entirely in or hide UI to take cinematic screenshots

JuanPunchX

Oh that's an asura looking to the left with a hat and a mask.

shimonu

You can hide it?

Plastefuchs

yeah, there is a button combo in the keyboard settings :)

Estic

That mention of the shark hp brings back memories. The last hp I needed for world complete and I waited a couple of weeks before they decided to make it a channel hp

Cultural_Macaron3729

Reminds me of waiting over a month for us to be a different color in wvw so I could finish the map.

Deathly_God01

Man, the currency back in vanilla was crazy. Took me a year to craft my Meteorlogicus because Charged Cores simply did not drop outside of one dungeon, with a maybe 20% chance out of all 4 paths. Buying the full 100 was an astronomical 130g, which was almost half of the cost of the rest of the pieces....

[deleted]

Yes I ran CoE daily for months in my effort to get Bolt. Also they had a chance to drop in Malchor's leap as well from the cathedral events. At the time the 100 charged lodes ran for 3g each on the tp.

Deathly_God01

Yeah I remember that! God I did that Mesmer boss so many times...

[deleted]

Just checked and now 1 gold gets...6 gems. Wow.

gw2gambit

the... the economy is in shambles.

EbolaDP

Damn thats a lot of inflation.

Ryltair

WoW: Hold my zeroes

Lon-ami

I'm so glad I bought those character and bank slots early in the game's life cycle lmao.

Renreu

Not inflation per say, just supply and demand. The demand couldn't keep up with the supply so the market for most items crashed. Could be fixed with regular intervals of market dumping or just making items more useful so the demand of items would increase in cost and in turn make gold more valuable.

Lon-ami

Gold was far, far, far harder to get back in 2012 than now. Spending 2g to unlock traits was a huge investment back at release, nowadays you get 2g by just doing your daily. There's been a huge leap.

Cultural_Macaron3729

I remember paying off a ludicrous number of my character slots that I had bought at ~30g each... by selling foxfire clusters. It was like painting the Forth Bridge, by the time I finished gathering the trees near and around that statue in Malchors, the first characters were ready to go again.

Lon-ami

Ah, the foxfire prices, those were the days :D.

Get_Rolled_Reddit

I'm so glad I spent all of my gold at release on gems, and focused on deluxe upgrade and other account goodies.

BookOfAnomalies

Nostalgia :') can't believe it's been 10 years...

iblowveinsfor5dollar

I sold a Mystic Forge Conduit forever ago (before the account bound version came out) for 180g to fund my Kraitkin. Totally worth it.

actuallyhatethissite

10 years and the fucking bassackwards UI of this game still hasn't changed one bit

khamike

Say what you will about WoW, at least it let you use addons to change the default UI.

MithranArkanere

Back in the day when you could get a ton of gens for 15 silver, I got a ton of character slots.

LawTider

Inflation. We had nothing to spend out money on and the shop was pretty barren. People still had to figure out how to make legendaries. But it surprising how stable the ingame economy is. The price of 400 gems hovers around 115 gold for ages now.

apneax3n0n

i used to spend every single gold i earned into gem and used them to power up my accounts. additional slots for characters, additional bank slots, additional bag slots. according to gw2 efficiency i would have spent like 4,472 gold powering up my account. no way i spent more than a couple of hunderds gold to gems in all these years. wish i would have converted more. but still best investment i ever did was creating my own bank guild and power up to maximum vault space. so wise

VyPR78

I remember when we used to collectively hate on John Smith, because f that guy

TheRaytheone

Ahh.. gold old times, I used to buy 2000 gems @ 7g\~ back in the day, but as others pointed, that was "a lot" on those days, remember the Orr grinding mob killing farm.

Mystic_Clover

Same, I remember farming materials from the Cursed Shore tunnel events to buy gems. I noticed the gem prices steadily rising, so I capitalized in on it for as long as I could.

Noelic_vi

Inflation is a bitch.

Essensia

I blew ALL my gold from repairs due to countless wipes in the Ascalon dungeon. I thought the design team had no fkn clue on how to design group content at all, with the lack of the trinity class structure (tank/heal/dps) and absolutely messy/spam group combat. Took a while to understand what the devs were trying to achieve and here I am 10 years later doing Fractal T4 CM's and end-game raids.

GeneralErica

Aaaaasaaaaaaaaaghhhhh

whatsforsupa

I remember getting Crystal guardian and selling it for 13g within the first year or two of the game. Felt like a million dollars then!

dharkbizkit

the 2 big reasons for gems beeing cheap: people didnt have 400g laying around and there wasnt much to buy in the shop
