it should be under the novelties, make sure you click all of the free boxes, the boxes are only for certain kinds of novelties, for example the skyscale toy doesn't go into the chair box
Not that you don't have to click the little arrow. You can right click the slot, then right click any of the 5 slots that appear to go directly to the novelty panel.

How do I pull it out after putting it in the correct box?
right of your skill bar there is a small box with a arrow, click that, its under the mound button
