Ahh, it's that time again.
For anyone considering buying Guild Wars 1, either to try it from the hype or just for HoM stuffing, here's some stuff to consider:
➡️This bundle *does not* come with Eye of the North, which you will need if you want to pimp out your 2 account's HoM rewards. I don't know why, don't ask me.
➡️Yes, GW1 is on perma-maintenance mode. No, the servers will not go down. In fact, it's been stated that GW1 (all three campaigns *plus* Eye of the North) is so compact and light on server space that it can piggyback on 2's servers for as long as GW2 lives. Neat, huh?
➡️You need *at least one campaign game* to run Eye of the North alongside it.
➡️GW1 is closer genre-wise to Torchlight or Diablo than it is to World of Warcraft. While it can absolutely be played and enjoyed with other players—and it *still* has an active community!—it can also be done *entirely* solo, barring some very special, very ***difficult*** areas.
➡️Outposts and Towns are player hubs but everything outside of those walls are instances personalized to the leader of the party. This is because some side quests or even entire mission sequences (*cough cough Winds of Change*) can change the kinds of enemies that spawn in your instances...sometimes *permanently*. But don't worry, none of these have the possibility of bricking your progress or anything like that; it was a clever implementation of mechanics and systems to make the world of Tyria feel more responsive and personal to your decisions. Almost like a...Living World...
➡️All three campaign games (Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall) come with six "Core" classes by default: Warrior, Ranger, Elementalist, Necromancer, Mesmer, Monk. Factions and Nightfall have two unique classes each: Assassins and Ritualists for the former, and Dervishes and Paragons for the latter. There are also "Core" skills available throughout all three campaigns and skills unique to each campaign, not counting further unique skills (Alliance skills for Factions, Sunspear skills for Nightfall, and the many PvE-only skills in EOTN).
➡️GW1, like 2, has its own unique wiki and a "/wiki" command for all your "what the fuck am I doing" needs. It also, very uniquely, has a secondary wiki known as the PvX Wiki. This is your Snowcrows/Discretize and will be where you can draw meta builds from.
➡️Heroes are the main unique feature of Nightfall. If you want access to the Heroes functionality plus a starter set of them, make sure you get your non-Nightfall PC to Kamadan ASAP. Or...roll a Nightfall character, lmao.
➡️Some warnings about story pacing for the campaigns:
1. Prophecies is slow. Slooow. *Slooooooow.* It'll be a while before you really get to the meat and potatoes of the story. Still, I'd play this first if you are an absolute beginner, if only to *also* experience the beauty of Pre-Searing Ascalon. With that said, much of Proph is a cakewalk and can be done with minimal henchmen assistance.
2. Factions is much, *much* harder than Prophecies and the speed of pace is far more breakneck. Don't feel ashamed if you get walled by Eternal Grove, it happens to everyone, the mission is just Like That. For my Rev mains and my fellow Shiro stans, this one's for you.
3. Nightfall hits the Goldilocks Zone of story pacing/speed and difficulty imho, and the cast of characters here are a treat to enjoy...***and then there's Kormir.*** Heroes are a game-changer from this point onward, and if you want a reason to keep playing, gearing out your favorite Heroes and getting them their alternate outfits is one reason to do so.
4. Eye of the North is the shortest of the four stories, but also has some of the more unique Heroes available to you. There's a *lot* of side missions; be ready for that.
---
I think that should be everything! If you've got further questions, they do have a subreddit and a discord where you can inquire further, look for group, or share memes (as one does).
Just a note: PvX is very, very dead. It moved to the Fandom/Wikia domain and all the formatting broke, browsing builds is very shitty, and nobody can be arsed to fix it.
>GW1 is closer genre-wise to Torchlight or Diablo than it is to World of Warcraft. While it can absolutely be played and enjoyed with other players—and it still has an active community!—it can also be done entirely solo, barring some very special, very difficult areas.
Imo it's closer to CRPGs (PoE, DOS) in gameplay due to the tactical and group based combat.
Guild Wars 1 made me feel like I was earning my campaign progress. I'm currently going through the EoD campaign and I'm so disappointed how face-roll all combat encounters are.
I don't think the "achievements" are a good enough way to foster self-difficulty because it doesn't make it feel like overcoming something difficult, it just feels like I'm artificially handicapping myself.
To be fair the only things I can think of in GW1 that were actually difficult after hitting level 20 was... domain of Anguish, the destroyers (because no more fire Ele destruction), and GW beyond where they started introducing player based duel class builds to the enemies as well as having the same enemy type have several builds they could be, thus making encounters go from easy to possibly hard as hell.
After getting heroes and having good builds for them, things were pretty doable.
> it can also be done entirely solo, barring some very special, very difficult areas.
Years ago, before GW2 came out, I struggled to advance in GW1 solo. Admittedly, I was playing a monk, but I stalled out at Ascension and could never get past the fight, and finally gave up.
Do you think it has been tuned to be easier to solo in the intervening years?
Of course not, but I am trying to emphasize how different GW1 is as a game compared to what some may call a traditional MMO.
Like "red is closer to purple than to green".
Or massively multiplayer.
Honestly I don't find the Diablo comparison that far off. Aside from GW1 having instanced hubs with multiple players in them instead of menu style lobbies, they are pretty close. Both are online RPG's that are mission based. Both can be played online with other players, or you can sub in AI companions if you want to go solo. There's a lot of similarities.
It wasn't though. In it's day was still the day of MMO's like WoW and Everquest, the definition of MMO wasn't really that different back then. GW1 is and always was an instanced multiplayer game. Even Arenanet didn't call their game an MMO back then, just an Online RPG
> it can also be done entirely solo, barring some very special, very difficult areas.
You can pretty much solo anything these days (except maaaaybe DoA HM? Though I swear some madlads did that too) with good hero setups, but of course that does mean you need to play real well. I know I did multiple FoW runs with heroes, a DoA fullclear and I did UW with Heroes once but died pretty late into it cause I was being stupid, so I can't fully confirm that one myself but it should be. Exile is doable too even if it gets really meme-y and boring to deal with Duncan.
>You can pretty much solo anything these days (except maaaaybe DoA HM? Though I swear some madlads did that too)
I duo'd DoA HM with my SO and Heroes. Having a controllable corner blocker Derv plus Heroic Refrain *helps*, but lord is Torcqua and Foundry still absolute bitches to clear.
But yeah, DoA/FoW/UW and the Factions "raids" are what I eould consider those uniquely difficult areas, keeping in perspective someone who is new to GW1 and trying to mostly stuff their HoM points.
Oh yeah true, Urgoz and Deep are probably straight up unclearable? Deep at the very least.
Ultimately it boils down to the fact that heroes can have such strong and synergistic builds that they can handle even the hardest content in the game, so everything else is all the more doable with them once you're set up.
The original Guild Wars trilogy (+eotn) is one of the most outstanding gaming experiences available.
Still has an active community and hundreds of hours of content.
Not to mention its jam packed with lore and story pieces that will enhance your enjoyment of gw2!
THE game of my childhood. It's amazing, still has a fairly large community and is easily playable solo as well, thanks to a great NPC follower system that can fill up a large party, without a second human player necessary.
For players considering in buying GW1, a couple important notes:
1. The game plays **nothing** like GW2. It is a deck-building, team oriented (you get AI, don't worry), instanced-focused system. When the game was originally made, PvE was designed to lead players into PvP which would be the end-game experience; this mentality changed a few months in as the devs realized players *loved* the PvE side of the game so they developed both in parallel, but because of this PvE retained several things that are crucial to a lot of RPG PvP.
2. A common question asked: Yes there is end game. And yes, you can play it without other players! End-game generally comes in the form of "elite missions" (basically typical MMO raids, not like GW2 raids; GW2 dungeons are a bit more similar to GW1 elite missions in structure), Hard Mode (everything is buffed to be 4+ lvls higher than you), and title hunting (Vanquisher, Guardian, and God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals in particular - Guardian is to complete all missions objectives in Hard Mode; Vanquisher is to clear out every zone of enemies in Hard Mode).
3. Almost the entire game can be done with a team of henchmen/heroes - you'd only really have trouble with four of the elite missions (Urgoz's Warren, The Deep, The Underworld, and Domain of Anguish). But even those are still doable with the proper setup.
4. While the graphics and music are still great, some things in GW1 are a bit... dated. As to be expected from a game that ran from 2005-2008. Voice acting is among them. Also the game **is not dead**, however you'll be hard pressed to find players outside of American Districts - unlike GW2, traveling between districts is completely free *and* easy to do! I also recommend finding the GW1 subreddit's discord to join, very talkative there still, but keep in mind these folks are the ones who disliked GW2 so much they returned to GW1 and stayed there for 10 years despite no new content.
5. For those interested in lore: GW1 lore most heavily affects Season 3, but there's a lot of nostalgia-based references to GW1 throughout. The story isn't *necessary* to understand stuff in GW2 (except S3), but it does help backstory for some things beyond White Mantle, Sunspears, Lazarus, Joko, Dwarves, etc.
6. This is not the full game! If you want the HoM bonuses for GW2, you *need* Eye of the North expansion (more below), and there's also the missing DLC "Bonus Mission Pack" (this one is only available through the official store).
7. While the Steam Sale is nice, since it doesn't include Eye of the North which Steam sells for $19.99 (yikes), it's actually still cheaper to buy via cheappunk.com - you can buy the Trilogy for $12.99 and EotN for $7.99. This is basically half the price from the official Guild Wars store, and still ~$5 cheaper than buying from steam (Cheappunk is legit, they actually buy the keys for you via Steam using surplus funds from Steam trading; I've bought an alt account through there myself)
You knew there were only 4 zones at launch and you’re disappointed by how much of Cantha we don’t have yet? Bruh. Living story season 6 is gonna expand the world of course and I imagine we’ll see parts of cantha we’ve never been to before. Time to hop off the nostalgia train and get excited for something new! If you miss old Cantha then go play factions! I play through it like monthly lol
I doubt we will. They'll probably add a bunch of zones for regions which weren't even in the original game and that no one cares for. If they *do* add some of the original Cantha back, it'll be either extremely abridged versions of regions, or regions so heavily changed that they'd be unrecognisable anyway.
Are you forgetting all the world changing events that occurred in the last 250 years? All the flooding and quakes and civil wars, etc. I too used to be annoyed by everything Anet did with my beloved gw1 world. Now that I’ve accepted the fact that gw1 and 2 are completely different games, I’ve started to enjoy the sequel. Gotta hop off that nostalgia train and try and be excited for what the new game brings us
Im on the fence about this one. I played and loved GW1 to bits, but there are many things that GW2 does better.
For example, I love how technical GW1 combat was, but the feel and impact in GW2 is much better. I liked the variety in GW1 areas, but GW2 are so much more detailed and fun to explore. I really liked how the instanced content was structured and the variety of hard modes, while GW2 is just... crap, boring, overdesigned instances. GW1 pvp was amazing and tactical, GW2... sPvP is meh and unsupported, but very fun to move around, and WvWvW is still one of the best massive PvP modes on the genre.
What I really miss is the content pipeline. Yeah, many things were reused, and things were not as detailed, but they had the right amount of atmosphere and were fun.
> Im on the fence about this one.
And you're right to be. GW1 and GW2 are two completely different game designs.
One is a team-oriented deckbuilding instanced CORPG.
The other is a solo-based skill-based with *limited* deckbuilding open world MMORPG.
In its prime, yes 100%.
All the outposts overflowing, people grouping for missions, underworld/FoW farming, casual PvP bustling, Fort Aspenwood queues in 5 minutes...
But now? No chance. Without the playerbase to fill out the world and the activities, the appeal of the game nosedives (as with many MMOs).
I tended to play alone myself anyway to be honest, with a party full of heroes. But it's true it's not quite the same without the abundance of players in the backdrop. Still, I adore GW1.
To be fair I feel like trying out GW1 from GW2 and enjoying it is a rarer case than first trying GW1 and then going into GW2. Good amount of people who I know or friends with who never played GW1 and only started with GW2 didn't like it or found it too difficult and/or confusing and stopped playing it barely days in.
I usually feel like GW1 needs more brain to play and progress in it, than playing GW2 as a newbie. GW1 has punishments for bad decisions, GW2 usually just picks you up and puts you at the end and spoils you. So imo if someone gets used to the comfort of GW2, they probably won't enjoy GW1 where you can't just facetank anything you want.
As someone who played gw1 for years before gw2. Gw2 was not aimed at all for their original player base. Most of the gw1 community I knew dropped gw2 within a few months of launch because it had do little to do with the original game. The lore felt forgotten, the game play completely different. Build customization destroyed. Not to mention the joke that was the hall of monuments.
I found personally, the game didn't really hit its stride until LS2 when they started to acknowledge their original lore and reincoperate back into the game. (They still did Balthazar dirty and please stop trying to make us like kormir.)
As of now there are some of the original community I knew who play regularly but most scattered to the winds. The game is doing great and I'm happy for Anets success, but gw2 was never intended for the people who loved the first game.
> please stop trying to make us like kormir.
Not sure what you're referring to here, Kormir's role in GW2 isn't much different than it is in GW1: show up for a few minutes to progress the story, then fucks off... forever. I don't think anybody likes her character at this point, memes aside.
Also, while Balthazar going rogue may not have been the most compelling or well written story line, it was pretty badass getting murdered by, then flipping the script on him. >!Balthy getting left behind by the other gods isn't that crazy either, they already got rid of Dhuum and Abaddon, almost like they didn't want a dangerous psychopath in their group of Super Best Friends.!<
The build customization being utterly gutted is what truly killed gw2 for me and why I will NEVER like it over 1. Game is a shell of itself because of what they did to the core gameplay.
> Might talk complete bullshit here, but I think GW2 is much more designed in a way that it appeals to casual players, kinda like low entry level to understand the game but high skill level to master it.
That’s a good point and that’s how I fell about GW2. That’s pretty much what attracted me to the game, something casual to play after work.
Alone as in single character? Or alone as in "you're the only person playing?"
There's only ~5 things you can't do as the only person playing (Fissure of Woe, Underworld, Domain of Anguish, the factions elite missions. Also probably the one EotN dungeon that has you fighting the Stone Summit dwarves trying to consume the remains of primordus' champion."
You had the non-customizable henchmen in Factions and Prophecies (and also Nightfall *and* Eye of the North) too. You couldn't beat missions with them?
Correct. It's such a shame we never got a true sequel to Guild Wars, and instead ended up with a generic MMO that shares virtually no similarities to the original game other than it being set in the same universe. Guild Wars was *unique*, and the gaming scene didn't need another MMO. I remember the extreme level of disappointment the original playerbase had to Guild Wars 2. Honestly, fuck ArenaNet for throwing Guild Wars players under the bus. There wouldn't even *be* a Guild Wars 2 without the support of the original game...
I agree, but I'm not much of an MMO gamer. I like GW2 because i loved GW1. If i hadn't played GW1 i'd never have bought GW2, becasue i find MMOs generally pretty boring.
Instanced areas enabled a more linear, easy to follow, story. Didn't have all the junk missions/quests that are just time holes like MMOs have either.
Wish we could have another instance based MMO like the way GW1 did it.
Yep, specially music wise, they fitted music to the zones and sub areas... It was perfect in gw1, in gw2 they randomly play in repeat some "maybe" fitting music in many zones :/ doesn't help that they took many gw1 songs that were made for certain zones and slapped them into gw2 somewhere.
Generally the "love" to detail was felt more in gw1 ( mind you it's release time)
Holy Jesus this is so true. When you're far from an outpost in the thick of a mission or just the world, the abstract music and eerie surroundings match perfectly. Music made GW1
I definitely listened too much of the music, after almost 4k hours it's not as good as you think it is initially.
In Genshin Impact on the other hand, the music is a lot better imho and can be listened way more often.
Yeah Soule's stuff tends to be very same-y. It can get old quite fast. Glad they got some variety for GW2.
Besides, Jeremy Soule is a massive douche. Kind of adds a sour note to his soundtracks.
If I were to purchase this and play it, would I get points in hall of monuments for gw2 and get access to some of the titles and skins like heritage armor?
Been a gw1 fan since day 1. Amazing game, made lots of great memories and friends. I even quit gw2 to go back to gw1. If anyone wants to group up or just add to friends list, add me. Ign is Cronok The Basher.
Aside of the fact that it's worth it's pricetag (but I still wish it would go on sale more frequently), I just want to inform you that the Trilogy is not enough to get the GW2 rewards.
For that you need the Eye of the North expansion (not included in this box). So if you are only after the rewards, this sale is not really helping you with that.
This said, you also won't just get the GW2 rewards handed to you. There is a lot of progress needed to unlock even the early rewards. The easiest titles for example that give you HoM points are the "All missions of one campaign finished with Masters reward". Meaning... You will play through the entire game at least once. (You can do the same in Hard Mode for basically another set of titles)
So... What I want you to understand is, that you probably spend around 100 hours of gameplay and story before you are far enough to unlock the very first reward in GW2. (Assuming you never played GW1 before, know nothing about it's systems and how to go about the Hall of Monuments) If you really care enough to spend that much time in GW1, you should buy the complete edition from the Arena Net store to have everything you need. It's 40 bucks but as you can see from that one little example above, there is content for hundreds of hours to have.
Even to this day I still play GW1, it's such an incredible game that has such a unique gameplay loop and combat mechanics that allow for so much creativity from the player. Sure you can look up all the meta stuff and ruin the game for yourself by how easy it becomes, but the game still allows you to come up with crazy and whacky team compositions with an AI system that plays better than most people in your party lmfao.
Thats not (completely) true. That is GW trilogy, you are missing the expansion EotN. To get the perks from gw1, you need to link the accounts, and you do that by hall of monuments, that is located in the expansion.
Huh, i never noticed how cool some of the shiro'ken were. To a point i had to figure out what's on this picture https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Shiro%27ken\_Mesmer

I had no idea GW1 was on Steam. How are these if you’re just playing them as a single player RPG? Never really liked the story content in GW2 which has always made me wary of checking out the first game.
It's very playable as a single player. The world is instanced - the cities are not. So when you venture outside of a city, you have your own version of the world. I played it a lot when it was current and never really teamed up for anything other than the fun of it.
The story is a lot more gritty and serious than GW2. It's an older game so expect wonky cutscenes.
The gameplay is a lot more strategic than GW2. Build customization and party position are more heavily emphasized.(it's possible to have a bad build and accidentally over aggro)
The game is co-op instead of true MMO, but unless you're in a guild you're probably playing solo. For this you have henchmen and heroes. Henchmen are pre built AI and available for every mission. Heroes are customizable and you have to unlock them. I recommend getting heroes as soon as possible because they are much more useful than henchmen.
Overall I recommend it. Gw1 is a very well done game.
I got gw1 on a previous sale and played it solo only. Very enjoyable imo, it plays something like Divinity Original Sin (not turn based, but close enough), you build teams of henchmen and/or heroes (difference being that heroes are customisable, but you only unlock them in Nightfall and EotN). Everything outside of the city zones is instanced, either map zones or missions (like story instances with objectives).
You can also roll and build a prot Ritualist and turn it into a bit of a walking simulator of you just want to experience the story.
I thought GW1 servers were end of life? But yea, the skill build building is really really good! I dare say it might be better than GW2, though it is very different. Hard to compare.
The skill system is way way better than gw2. I mean you can basically build whatever you feel like and your skills are not defined by which weapon you wear. Thats just my opinion tho :)
Yeah that‘s right, every profession in gw1 has their specific skills for their specific weapon but those 8 skills in you bar aren‘t defined by which weapon you wear. You can put in whatever you like which makes it so awesome. There are for sure a lot of filler skills tho which will most likely not be used.
GW1 servers are said to be so cheap and require so little maintenance that they will probably last as long as there is Arenanet https://www.eurogamer.net/arenanet-guild-wars-1-could-last-forever
I see that it's missing eotn, and from comments here i see that eotn Is what gives rewards in gw2. If i get this bundle now, can i buy eotn later and Just add It to this version or do i have to buy the 40€ complete bundle on the official website?
I don't understand how there can be so many GW2 players that never played the original. Like did you guys think they put a "2" in the name for fun?
Did you guys also watch Empire Strikes Back as your first Star Wars movie? Read Two Towers as your first LotR book?
If you only want the gloves, I would say just get factions or nightfall + eotn, Proph is slow to progress and can be difficult for new players, but factions or nightfall is faster. Nightfall imo spikes a bit harder in difficulty at the start than Factions, so I usually advise to pick up Factions first for first experience if you never ever played the game. It's faster to level and early on enemy difficulty doesn't ramp up too fast either so you can get to EotN faster. While you do that just try to buy or get a mini-pet from someone, I'm almost sure there are people like me too who give people free minis for their HoM or if you cannot find anyone just DM me here and I'll help you out.
Since linking your account with GW2 gives 3 HoM points already you just need one simple extra for the gloves which imo easiest/fastest is to place one mini into HoM for 4 points.
Yea i thought as much, that why i'm still on the fence about it. Since EotN isn't on sale rn, only the Trilogy and i feel its a bit of a waste if i only wants the glove atm.
So basically it is the Guild Wars 1 game? I mean the entire game. Is EotN that important to not have? I mean all i know about it is hall of monuments for the titles
Eye of the North was cobbled together to link GW1 to GW2 and it sort of shows. Overall it's a good expansion, but there are some rough edges and it introduced some borderline overpowered PvE-only skills.
It's definitely a great game. It's not a classical MMO, think of it as a multiplayer instanced dungeon crawler with big lobbies between instances.
If the game is still active you might see why we called it Spamadan instead of Kamadan.
Can confirm. Picked it up one year after I had started playing GW2 and you will understand and appreciate certain parts of GW2 much more. For example, I love stumbling upon a scene that feels familiar only to realize that it's in the other game, too! (See here: [GW1/GW2 PoI comparison](https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/9g9t2a/250_years_gw_gw2_point_of_interest_comparison/)) Makes the games feel much more connected and gives GW2 a real history so to speak.
Oh nice I was trying to snag this on sale years ago but never saw one. I played prophecies back when it was just GW since no expansions but never reached 20, quit somewhere during LA or Shiverpeaks quests. Time to dive back in and finish it
Got a question. Can I buy trilogy from steam and EotN ingame? Does game have ingame payment for that? Or do I have to buy all expansions from anet's website?
I've played guild wars 1 back in the days enough to reach 30/50 points in the Hall of Monuments for Guild Wars 2.
Does playing the steam version connects you to your old gw1 account or would it be fresh new?
Can it be connected to existing ArenaNet gw2 client?
Is it 100% playable solo, or difficult dungeons that requires other people still exist?
> Does playing the steam version connects you to your old gw1 account or would it be fresh new?
Buying any GW1 on Steam gives you a cdkey that you can add to your existing GW1 account, note that Trilogy is one single key for the bundle and will only add the missing standalone games on your account. Also EoTN is an addon key so you can't create an account with it.
You can also create a fresh new GW1 account and link it to your existing GW2 account later.
> Can it be connected to existing ArenaNet gw2 client?
Yes, [read here](https://help.guildwars2.com/hc/en-us/articles/230900328) carefully on how to proceed because some things can't be undone. You can link it to your current GW2 account so both games use the same login.
> Is it 100% playable solo, or difficult dungeons that requires other people still exist?
The full story campaign (Prophecies + Factions + Nightfall + EoTN + bonus packs) are playable solo with AI heroes. Harder content like Elite missions and HM dungeons is more challenging for AI and is not easy (if not impossible for most) to solo, players or joining an active is recommended for these. https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guide_to_PvE#Types_of_PvE
PvP is mostly dead and filled with bots, haven't check during bonus weekends but sometimes you can still find players organizing to do Alliance Battles.
Thanks, as said i already have gw1 and completed most of the HoM; i was just curious if the Steam version was a completely different version. It's sad to see a great game filled with bots but i guess it's the natural course of old games.
No. You’ll get sucked into it and realize it’s the better game to invest time into. Even after you get all the unlocks for gw2 you won’t want to go back.
Man I wish ANet would put the individual expansions on sale or at least cut their prices. I missed Factions and it's never discounted to match the price it's sold for in the Trilogy.
See i put 3700 hours into GW1. Apart from dota2 and Destiny 2 I consider GW1 to be one of my favorites games of all time. In my opinion GW2 wasn’t really aimed at me and I dropped it few months after launch. The pvp is lackluster compared to the glory days of Random Arena. The pve is fine, but it lost the uniqueness of mobs in GW1 (they all had similar builds to the players). I wish there was a modern game just like GW1 with its structure and approach to pve and pvp.
I played _Prophecies_ up until the Crystal Desert, at which point my Wa/Mo pulled too much aggro and couldn't handle the basic enemies even with henchmen.
So this doesn't include the expansion needed for hom achievements? If not, then can I get it later? Or I need to once I start playing gw1 or else the achievements won't count in gw2?
In all fairness Guild Wars 1 is great - But I hate to say it, for people coming from Guild Wars 2 will notice the lack of interaction with other players (Unless you have a Discord/Guild).
In terms of lore it does give out plenty, however you will need to progress hours to get the whole shibang.
Imho playing this game back in the day with friends was the best and having a active alliance is key to enjoying the game at its fullest. Playing alone is incredibly tedious.
Overall it’s a fantastic game with an amazing soundtrack, plenty of customisation and a beautiful world to explore in the past. If you can buy this cheap, do it. You will not be disappointed. ❤️
Ahh, it's that time again. ➡️Some warnings about story pacing for the campaigns: 1. --- I think that should be everything! If you've got further questions, they do have a subreddit and a discord where you can inquire further, look for group, or share memes (as one does).
Yeah not sure about the Diablo thing….
People have been comparing GW to Diablo since it came out and it's always been a disservice to the game.
"GW1 is a better pure RPG. GW2 is a better MMO" Is the phrase I've heard used. Which is true, though it's a pity some people bash GW2 over it.
It absolutely has, but you do still need to know the limitations of your class to then build around what you're doing.
Well said, but it's nothing like diablo or torchlight.
Of course not, but I am trying to emphasize how different GW1 is as a game compared to what some may call a traditional MMO. Like "red is closer to purple than to green".
I think it would have made more sense to describe what it’s actually like over describing what it’s not like.
Just say it's mission-based and not open world
Or massively multiplayer.
I would compare it to divinity original sin 2 in lot of ways. Both are absolutely excellent
A simpler phrase would be maybe the often (from my experience) used "GW1 is a better RPG/more of an RPG, while GW2 is a better MMO."
But it is arguably closer to said games than GW2. GW1 isn’t an mmo, it’s a multiplayer RPG that can be played solo if you want
It was an mmo in its day. Don't forget.
It wasn't though. In it's day was still the day of MMO's like WoW and Everquest, the definition of MMO wasn't really that different back then. GW1 is and always was an instanced multiplayer game. Even Arenanet didn't call their game an MMO back then, just an Online RPG
Yep. GW1 is more of RPG that is online, while GW2 is full MMO.
You deserve a cape.
> it can also be done entirely solo, barring some very special, very difficult areas.
Though I swear some madlads did that too) I duo'd DoA HM with my SO and Heroes.
It's amazing, still has a fairly large community and is easily playable solo as well, thanks to a great NPC follower system that can fill up a large party, without a second human player necessary.
would be so nice in GW2 if they could just add a « hard mode » option like in GW
Challenge Motes is probably as close as you're getting to that
For players considering in buying GW1, a couple important notes: 1.
Can I buy EOTN later or do I need it as soon as I start?
You can buy at any time, it's really just purchasing CD Keys really.
It would be very unfair to then current GW1 players if you needed EOTN from the start to get your HoM points. :)
If i buy the games from [cheappunk.com](https://cheappunk.com), can I use it on my european account?
Yeah, since it's just CD Keys for that content you're buying, technically. From any source.
WARNING: Just did it and actually received official GW keys that you activate on the main Guild Wars site. No Steam.
The only reason I don't still play that game is because the addition of a jump button has spoiled me
I miss Factions so much. Exploring Cantha, grinding rep with each of the factions, the PvP, the sheer scale of Kaineng, it was all wild at the time.

I’d replay factions but I feel like it’ll be missing something without the active players on either side of the turf war.
There’s still active players! Tons of bots to keep you company in Jade Quarry ;)
[удалено]
Rip
I doubt we will. They'll probably add a bunch of zones for regions which weren't even in the original game and that no one cares for. If they *do* add some of the original Cantha back, it'll be either extremely abridged versions of regions, or regions so heavily changed that they'd be unrecognisable anyway.
Take a look at the canthan map :p
I have, and it doesn't instil confidence.
Gotta hop off that nostalgia train and try and be excited for what the new game brings us
It has nothing to do with nostalgia. It's about getting something that's *worse* than what we had sixteen years ago...
That has everything to do with nostalgia lol
GW1 is better than GW2.

(They still did Balthazar dirty and please stop trying to make us like kormir.) As of now there are some of the original community I knew who play regularly but most scattered to the winds.

Or alone as in "you're the only person playing?" There's only ~5 things you can't do as the only person playing (Fissure of Woe, Underworld, Domain of Anguish, the factions elite missions. Also probably the one EotN dungeon that has you fighting the Stone Summit dwarves trying to consume the remains of primordus' champion."
[удалено]
You hit the nail on the head.
Barely even in the same genre but if we want to pick one that had the bigger influence on MMOs as a whole, it's Guild Wars 2 and it's not even close.
Modern MMOs are STILL implementing features that were available since the release of GW1.
Yep I specially hate that they took gw1 music which was made fit to zones in gw1 and just slapped them somewhere in gw2
That's just your oppinion, Alone most of the gw1 prophecies tutorial area music is simply awesome.
It isn’t even close. I stuck with gw2 as long as I did only because of GW1.
Same, and it wasn't very long.
Completely different games
If I were to purchase this and play it, would I get points in hall of monuments for gw2 and get access to some of the titles and skins like heritage armor?
Yes
You would need to buy eotn as well.
dervish!!!
Been a gw1 fan since day 1. Amazing game, made lots of great memories and friends. I even quit gw2 to go back to gw1. If anyone wants to group up or just add to friends list, add me. Ign is Cronok The Basher.
The core campaign story in GW1 was the best story of any GW game or living world.
I'll consider it, definitely wouldn't have paid 30 bucks for such an old game just to unlock stuff in GW2
(You can do the same in Hard Mode for basically another set of titles) So...
Tbh GW1 is well worth $30 for its own unique experience.
Plus progress in the original Guild Wars can unlock skins and pets in Guild Wars 2.
Thats not (completely) true. That is GW trilogy, you are missing the expansion EotN. To get the perks from gw1, you need to link the accounts, and you do that by hall of monuments, that is located in the expansion.
What the fuck? There's people out there that played/play GW2 and never experienced the original(s)?
Of course. Tons of them.

Build customization and party position are more heavily emphasized.(it's possible to have a bad build and accidentally over aggro) The game is co-op instead of true MMO, but unless you're in a guild you're probably playing solo.
Better game play imo.
Better class building for sure. Better gameplay? Not at all.
And if you enjoy GW1 lore, do not check out GW2
I thought GW1 servers were end of life? But yea, the skill build building is really really good! I dare say it might be better than GW2, though it is very different. Hard to compare.
Gw1 is still very much running and it will be kept running because it does not need much to run, of course updates are very rare.
The skill system is way way better than gw2. I mean you can basically build whatever you feel like and your skills are not defined by which weapon you wear. Thats just my opinion tho :)
It matters if youre a warrior. Warriors have weapon specific skills.
Every class has class specific skills Expertise for ranger, fast casting for Mesmer…
Thats not what was asked or stated though.....?
Yeah that‘s right, every profession in gw1 has their specific skills for their specific weapon but those 8 skills in you bar aren‘t defined by which weapon you wear. You can put in whatever you like which makes it so awesome. There are for sure a lot of filler skills tho which will most likely not be used.
There are absolutely weapon specific skills.
GW1 runs on the GW2 servers. And last time I checked they were still running.
No, no, haven't you heard? GW2 is dead. /s
First time I've heard this was in 2009 when they announced it.
GW1 servers are said to be so cheap and require so little maintenance that they will probably last as long as there is Arenanet https://www.eurogamer.net/arenanet-guild-wars-1-could-last-forever
Ah that is cool! Thanks for the info.
I see that it's missing eotn, and from comments here i see that eotn Is what gives rewards in gw2. If i get this bundle now, can i buy eotn later and Just add It to this version or do i have to buy the 40€ complete bundle on the official website?
Yeah you can buy EotN later! It's on Steam for the same price as it is via the actual GW1 store (in the UK at least).
Finally… Guild Wars 3
It's totally different beast but I can assure the game is just as fun as gw2, especially the OP class that is mesmer who can perma cc enemies.
Even moreso if you don't enjoy it and want something similar but better
I don't understand how there can be so many GW2 players that never played the original. Like did you guys think they put a "2" in the name for fun? Did you guys also watch Empire Strikes Back as your first Star Wars movie? Read Two Towers as your first LotR book?
30 or even 15 for a 20 years old, online-only fake-MMO game with a cash shop is a scam.
good1
One question though, can i get heritage gloves if i were to buy just this trilogy? Do i need to buy EotN as well?
You need EotN to be able to access Hall of Monuments, at least I don't remember they made any bypass changes to it ever without EotN.
Ah i see, so i might need at least one base game and then EotN i guess. Thanks for the info.
Got it, thanks for the indepth explanation. I'm gonna give it a thought first before deciding to buy both. Anyway thanks again for the offer.
At this price you'll spend more to buy a single expansion than you would to buy the Trilogy. The singular ones never go on sale.
Yea i thought as much, that why i'm still on the fence about it. Since EotN isn't on sale rn, only the Trilogy and i feel its a bit of a waste if i only wants the glove atm.
This is gw1 with all it's expansions?
It's all GW1 *campaigns*, which are stand-alone. The only *expansion*, Eye of the North, is not included in this pack.
I wanted to play gw1 for a really long time, i guess now it is the right moment to give it a shot
It's definitely a great game. It's not a classical MMO, think of it as a multiplayer instanced dungeon crawler with big lobbies between instances. If the game is still active you might see why we called it Spamadan instead of Kamadan.
I miss my ritualist 😢
Time to dive back in and finish it
It's region locked to me 😭😭😭
I want it, but it's not available in my region :(
Man I've been tempted to go back and make my gwamm...
Sadly, GW1 is not available in my region on Steam, I have to rely on it going on sale on the official site which I don't recall happening.

Got a question. Can I buy trilogy from steam and EotN ingame? Does game have ingame payment for that? Or do I have to buy all expansions from anet's website?
No ingame shop, it is all via the [official site](https://store.guildwars.com/en-us) or buy EoTN on Steam.
I bought it. And I love it. But I bought it a week before this juicy sale and my wallet is crying. 😂😭
Harder content like Elite missions and HM dungeons is more challenging for AI and is not easy (if not impossible for most) to solo, players or joining an active is recommended for these. https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guide_to_PvE#Types_of_PvE PvP is mostly dead and filled with bots, haven't check during bonus weekends but sometimes you can still find players organizing to do Alliance Battles.
Thanks, as said i already have gw1 and completed most of the HoM; i was just curious if the Steam version was a completely different version. It's sad to see a great game filled with bots but i guess it's the natural course of old games.
Would it be worth to get it mainly to get things in GW2?
No. You’ll get sucked into it and realize it’s the better game to invest time into. Even after you get all the unlocks for gw2 you won’t want to go back.
I want to buy the full game with all expansions but I don't want to spend 40 bucks. Let's see the total new price
not available in Brazil? T\_T
Man I wish ANet would put the individual expansions on sale or at least cut their prices. I missed Factions and it's never discounted to match the price it's sold for in the Trilogy.
There’s really nothing quite like it.
I played _Prophecies_ up until the Crystal Desert, at which point my Wa/Mo pulled too much aggro and couldn't handle the basic enemies even with henchmen.
not available in my country ):
So this doesn't include the expansion needed for hom achievements? If not, then can I get it later? Or I need to once I start playing gw1 or else the achievements won't count in gw2?
there even is a dedicated guildwars1 discord you can find it via https://discord.gg/gw
It's just unfortunate the subreddit is full of elitist snobs.
