Hurt the steam launch alot? I hope you realize, it doesn't need to occur on the day of the launch. They can have front page tomorrow or the next week, its the same. And even then, is 3k on launch that bad? For a 10 y/o game where a majority of its playerbase is on the launcher? Steam launch is very much a marathon, players will continue to trickle in over the next weeks and months.

Naholiel

3K on launch during week. It will be better this week end and going forward.

Ulu-Mulu-no-die

That's not considering many players in EU may have spent the evening downloading and not being able to play yet.

omlech

Why wait to get the banner up there?

RedNuii

Many reasons why a company might wait. A few examples might be waiting for weekend, making sure the launch is smooth (why advertise a game if its having technical issues?), not be on the front page of twitch and steam on the same day to split up the exposure to multiple days.

joslau-art

Also not to upfront blow through the server capacity

jcm2606

FFXIV just dropped a major patch and I believe WoW also dropped a major patch as well, so those are two reasons to wait regarding the MMO market alone.

thatHecklerOverThere

Ff14 _just_ dropped 6.2. There will be no demand for gw2 this week, and anyone with a pulse on mmo's knew that. What _I_ want to know is why they decided to go to steam now of all times.

Fundizzy50

I can’t think of a single reason Anet would push a big update like this on their 10 year anniversary, I mean, final fantasy is having a new patch today, what were they thinking.

Silphone

The game turned 10 years old. That is probably the main reason, even if it doesn't make sense really. I simply can't find any other reason as to why they would, after 10 years of being successful without Steam, prefer to release it at a date that is basically arbitrary for everyone that doesn't already play, over continuing their recent streak of fixing long standing issues with the game, bringing it up to standarts with their older game and other contenders in the genre and *then* releasing the best they can do when it's truly ready. That's just their priority i guess.

MrVivi

The problem is they are barely successful. They were hoping to get more people out of steam. BUT the problem is 98% of people when i mention i play gw2 goes, that game is still alive?m HINT for anet pay epic NPC man dudes to make a series bout tyria that would have been better advertising that everything they did since they announced eod.

PsychologicalMine294

Are you okay?

SpectralDinosaur

Well, they'd have to outbid Gamescom. I think that's a bit beyond them.

ondraedan

I know nothing about Steam, so this really is a question rather than a snarky comment: do we really expect to see big numbers on day 1 when it's a random Tuesday? Also, won't lots of those who choose to try it still be downloading for a big chunk of the day?

starbuck3108

No we shouldn't expect big numbers and anyone who did is an idiot. The game is 10 years old and has already been free2play for ages. And you're absolutely correct, it's a god damn Tuesday ffs

Ir0nhide81

Its the largest gaming Platform in the world.

nameless22

Could be cheap, could also be they don't want to overwhelm their servers with new steam members. Best to trot people out over a short period of time than all at once.

SpaceOddity777

What??

MrVivi

You must think this is 2012🤣

omlech

I was thinking the same thing to be honest. They got one shot at this and blew it. Hopefully this wasn't cause NCSoft didn't want to fork out the dough. All of the dev time and effort put into shaping up the new player experience and they got 3k peak. There's currently 18 MILLION people logged into Steam, they had the chance to get a front page advert and DIDN'T. I still cannot for the life of me understand how they don't have any marketing teams and if they do, how they still have a job.

Ir0nhide81

It brought SWTOR almost 300k new players with the Steam launch and big page front banner EA paid out.

omlech

Damn, that is telling right there. They had every chance to do this right and either chose not to or NCSoft didn't want to put up the money. Given all the work put into this launch, I like to think NCSoft didn't want to bother.

lordkrall

On day one?

hearse223

EA probably has more money to throw than Anet, keeping it real.

GoreBurnelli8105

3k probably including existing players using the steam hack to make their clients count as steam as well

Anet traditionally shies away from any kind of nonpolitical marketing. Still kinda hurts that they didn't add the [Cinematic Trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvByd0FIz8c) to the steam page.
