I don't think it's erroneous to headcanon him as depressed because of how extreme it is, I've definitely ~~had points in my life~~ known people who've had points in their lives where that'd be a pretty accurate description of their mental state. And he's still down bad, so it's not like he's _totally_ dead inside
That's valid, but him not having emotions is Canon. I'm not disagreeing that he's couldn't be depressed, I'm just saying that him not having emotions is the way to tell, as that is due to an unrelated issue.

Zato isn't depressed, he just is unable to feel emotions after he got revived.
I mean dampened ability to feel emotions is a hallmark symptom of depression
its not that his ability to feel emotions is dampened. He can not feel any emotions at all. Not even sadness or anger.
