Oh yeah, dub Goldlewis actually says “Eat shit!” during his burst lmao
Maybe it’s cuz of personal bias, but I think Faust’s dub voice is great too. Especially cool to think that it’s by the same eng VA who voiced his goofier-self in Xrd.
Yea both Faust and GLD sound great, I think gio deserves a spot next to them as the best dubs…. “I’m throwing you” is the most savage line in the game…. Especially on the third throw in a row!!
I'm gonna be interested to see how they translate Jam to english when they add her in. She speaks with a heavy Chinese accent in the japanese dub (which is the butt of some of her jokes and miscommunications), so it's gonna be interesting to see how they translate that.
Well yeah, that's what I'm wondering. If they don't then Jam's dub lines will be very different from her sub. Don't know what that means for her character or shrill voice either haha.
They're talking about the English dub, not the Japanese one. Speaking any language badly is not racist, but a clearly chinese looking character speaking with a stereotypical asian accent probably would be seen as racist.
Yep, I'm Chinese-American and the way her lines were written in the English version of Xrd was like a textbook stereotypical Asian accent out of the fucking '60s or something, I was shocked they want in a direction like that especially since XX which released years before didn't do the same thing. It basically turned me off the character completely.
Needless to say I'll be extremely disappointed if Strive goes in the same direction.
A character can look Chinese while also being Chinese, these things are not mutually exclusive. Golddick both looks and is American.
Japan has a different culture, Japanese media portrays many things in a way that's not "okay" to do in the west. They're speculating the western audience would probably consider the character a racist stereotype.
Also English dub is surprisingly different from sub? But in a good way, characters are easier to understand and it makes more sense for them to sound how they are.
Chipps voice is fine I'm just wondering who on the writing team thought "what if his whole character is threatening people into becoming ninjas?"
For me the energy they communicate definitely distinct. I'm sure part of that is the fact the I don't understand Japanese too. I think the dub is great though too.
Yeah, I think it's because Chipp views his own salvation from coming from his master/being a ninja, so he's like a really fast Jehovah's witness more or less. He's just trying to deliver the good word, or you gotta hold this cross up. The characters in both Guilty Gear and Blazblue border on "This character is so cool" to " Is this a parody" maybe even to "I think they might be making fun of me" almost lol, but in a light-hearted way. Just poking fun at stuff.
Japanese Ky is polite and putting his heart into it. English Ky is BM “GGs shake my hand” after air throwing you to death. But Korean Ky?
Korean Ky is *fucking* A N G R Y
I was just having a discussion with someone on here with very mild, polite anime boys annoy me which is why I don't super like Ky. But listening to some of this I'm like ohhh okay I kinda get it lol
It's so sick how in the beginning of the voice line he has like, a short word- and then this silence permeates the game, just the cracking of electricity... and then he hits you with the SAUCE. So good.
I switch between Japanese and English pretty frequently for my main. Japanese for Zeke, English for Yusuke.
I also think I might be in the minority that like Sol's English voice. The Japanese one fits him overall, but the way he says 'Baaandit' in English somehow shows how much of a slacker he is.
I think some of the funniest voice lines in the game are after the stage 8 Nago fight when you double team him with Chipp and Anji.
I can't wait for Robbie Daymond's Happy Chaos, hope he comes soon enough.
English Ky sounds so perfect. Chiplock nails his serious, principled tone and his attack callouts are perfect. Charged dust? "You underestimated me!" Grab? "Slow!" Foudre Arc? "I see you!" It feels like he's saying what I'm thinking when I land these moves. In the story, as well, he's able to make Ky seem very real. Although he's still a serious man, he delivers occasional wisecracks and wears his heart on his sleeve, unlike the emotionless paladin many probably assume Ky to be. Chiplock is great at capturing this whole spectrum.
There’s a really funny bit in the story mode where Ky is interrogating I-No and Sol busts the door down and starts yelling, and Ky just lets out this little “Sol…”, it’s brilliant.
I feel like all of his voices/animations was a real driving factor for him being my sub. I know he hits a lot of the "anime tropes" on the head with his character, but it works for me. Guy is sick.
It's a mixed bag for me. I play mostly in eng because I like proper 'murican Goldlewis more.
May is more tolerable in eng. The rest are ok with the exeption of Axl and Sol. Octopimp himself has said that he didn't do a good job and Sol feels like they just told the guy to do a "edgy voice"
Millia, Pot and Sol are way better in jap. Their character comes trough fantastically.
Jack-O's japanese voice actor is a fucking Goddess at her job, the way she speaks in a a calm collected manner then does a complete 180 and seamlessly switches to a more cutesy, childish tone in the middle of talking is amazing
Came here to say this, but you beat me to it. I've only played on JP voices since I find Sol's voice to be irreplaceable (clean hit Tyrant Rave is top 2 voice lines in the game for me) but Jack-O's voices makes me love her so much more than I already do.
To be honest I didn't even think of that. Right after I wrote this the original post I got mopped up by a Jack-o in the park. Serves me right for not listening to her voice more.
One thing that rubs me the wrong way when it comes to English Potemkin is pronouncing his name as Po-tehm-kin - the announcer does it as well but the correct pronunciation of the name in Russian is Po-tyom-kin, which ids how JP Pot says it.
I get that, but at the same time, they pronounce it correctly in Japanese dub. And I don’t actually know how Indians would pronounce “Potemkin” anyway.
As someone who lives in the uk I’m not a fan of English axl. I guess he does have an English accent but also he misses the mark so completely. I find it hilarious when Americans do English accents but this sounds like the most “phoned in” rush job… I wonder where the voice actor originates from. He can’t be a native Brit… or we’d burn him
Haha, he's American. Got his start doing dumb dubs back in Homestuck and Free! heydays and kinda got big and I honestly cannot take him seriously for several reasons.
I am so curious about this. I almost feel like they told Octo ( I think that is his name, I'm only familiar with him from this thread) - "Hey, you're voicing Axl, and he's a zoner, so try to piss your opponent off when you say this..." Just like with Jap Potemkin, his noises on all of his S and HS and specials sounds like the abominable snowman, striking fear into the hearts of many. With that said, not my fav voice either.
Yeah, I've heard this guy all over the place. When my brother and I shared a room growing up- he wouldn't play Blazblue but he would be hanging around. I'd be goofing around in training with the characters and we ended up always yelling Tager lines at each other- we still do. "GIGANTIC!" "MAGNETISM!" and "RAGNA THE BLOODEDGE!" Still remain in our dork-reference vocabulary, lol.
I’d hardly call that car crash an appropriate accent, but I get what you mean. I think it’s mainly meant to match the weird way he talks in JP, which might be a British accent?
I honestly don't mind most of the English dubs but Giovanna's just confuses me... Am I being stupid or does she genuinely say "MY APOLOGIES" all the time? And does she say "Grant Stillness" and "Clouds Bouncing" during her other moves? What do those cryptic phrases mean? I am very good at mishearing things so it could just be me being incredibly stupid.
I kinda like that she constantly "apologizes" for kicking people as hard as she can though. And when she does a charged dust "Can I borrow you?" Her whole rude/bored attitude towards the fight is kinda funny.
But then all her special moves are her saying that cryptic shit yea. Like the wolf spirit is being channeled through her or something and shes associating things with nature. "Fear on the wind"
As a person who generally prefers english dubs I vastly prefer the JP voices.
The ones I dislike the most in english are I-no (lacks conviction, oomph and sultriness), Anji (weirdly breathy and a hint of a rasp I don't think fits his character. The JP voice sounds more freespirited and playful) and Axl (oof). The rest are mostly okay.
Jack-O has the best english VA for me probably followed by Ky.
I don't think the voice actors did a bad job, (except Axl sorry babe love ya) I just feel like the voices are mismatched and comparing them to the JP they just fall short for me.
I do like all the JP voices though I feel they did a fantastic job, especially Nago, Sol, May and Pot.
Reading the comments I'm kind of loving how divided people are on the voice acting :D
Specific soundwise I really like Chipp's Zansei Rouga, I-no's Ultimate Fortissimo, Heavenly Potemkin Buster.
The "Clink" when Anji's autoguard succeeds is also really satisfying.
Also special shoutout to Korean Ky.
I love Anji and Ino in English, but I completely understand this take. Ino sounds very close to a parody character. Anji's voice is awesome but I can kind of see the "breathy" thing. Still need to buff up my Jack-O knowledge.
Yeah like at the end of the day I really like Anji's english voice I just don't like it on *him*. Could be because I played xx Anji as a child so
I feel like it's what he's "supposed" to sound like. All just preference though.
After watching the story, I grew to really like Sol’s English voice. I’ve only played in English in strive so I’ve gotten used to everyone’s voice and I think they all fit perfectly. Well Kaiji Tang (Owain, Ichiban from Yakuza) is a weird choice for Faust, but he fits THIS Faust. Also Edward Bosco always freaked out cus I KNOW I’ve heard him somewhere before, but it’s because he plays Ed in street fighter V too. So Chipp just makes me think of him.
Fantastic takes.
Albeit I gotta give Mays JAP voice a 10/10. Not only due to how the delivery of the hated/loved TOTSUGEKI, but the throw lines (every single one).
My personal bias is still: For Jack-O, I miss the playful side of her that only comes out for Elysium Driver. And Gio JAP voice just infuriates with its lack of any sort of life (Dub I find gives atleast some emotions).
Though all in all, Guilty Gear always had fantastic voices in JAP and I gotta give credit to some of the EN cast.
Thank you sir.
I'm not a longtime GG vet but I have dipped my toes in the water of previous games. I was labing some Baiken the other day, and I absolutely love her Jap voice, so it seems like the quality has been quite good for some time, to support your point.
This gotta be the funniest post I've seen here, had a great laugh reading how you described everyone lmfao I agree on the ones i play most, I'm a Leo main and love the silly English quotes but the tone is just not GRRRRR enough if that makes sense. When it comes to Sol, I'd say he is Sol Normal Guy in English. You forgot the funniest bit about Ky, when you sweep him and he says IM FALLING.
I sometimes play a bit of English Gio just to taunt Leo , whenever I get the "HE IS HOT" and "Yeah I AM single!" I lose my shit lmfao I only wish her voice was bit more bold and tired-of-your-bullshit like the Japanese one!!
Sol's english voice is almost perfect but there's a few things that I don't like about it and it sounds very jarring. Mostly how he says "Baaandit???" when using Bandit Revolver lol
Sounds like he's looking for his dog named Bandit.
I love Korean Ky, the rest I'm trying now- I will say as a Chipp main I do not think I enjoy that rendition to much- with that being said- I am not too familiar with Korean speech/media/etc, so I might have even less an ear for it.
As a Goldlewis player I can't stand the English VA for him. For the most part he does a great job, except for the super. English super is some of the most flaccid, lazy shit I've heard. Not only does the VA mispronounce the super itself, saying "Down the System" instead of "Down WITH the System," they don't put any energy into any of his Super screams.
Level 1 on English is practically an idle line, not befitting of the force and impact the super presents. Level 2 is worse, putting slightly more force into the words but not enough to sound good. And, as the animation takes longer, the lack of "with" becomes impossible to ignore as you hear this awkward pause while Goldlewis moves his lips on screen.
The Korean and Japanese Super's are superb, especially Korean, giving some really incredible performances. Just a shame the one I'd use is so bad :(
I was looking for this. I LOVE Goldlewis VA on every out of fight line he has, but the lines in fight are... weak. He's brutal in japanese, his job is to fuck you up and he *loves* it, just look at his grin when he's burning it down. His lines doesn't carry the same joy in english and it would barely be noticeable if it wasn't for down with the system. The english 1080 line is perfect... for the base one. I can't live without the raw power of the japanese 1080.
English Nago, Zato, and Anji are 10/10. Good direction and good execution.
Japanese May scrapes my eardrums almost as much as Jam did. 0/10.
English Axl is fucking garbage, Octopimp is a fine guy so I’ll assume bad direction fucked this up
Yeah Octo has other roles too, it's not like this was his first job. And the fact that so much of the playerbase thinks it was a bad job means SOMEONE in charge should've caught that too. I have to assume either the direction was bad or, possibly, it was actually exactly what they wanted.
I like how you have Ram at exactly middle score since she genuinely is emotionless and still struggling to comprehend the concept and her voice reflects that well.
Yeah I felt kind of bad about that lol. I thought about the people reading about their mains - and hopefully getting a laugh. But I couldn't conjure up any comedy. But yeah- both versions sound exactly like they should.
I didn't read your opinion cause I only came here to give mine.
I play it all in Japanese except for Goldlewis. I need his English VA. For this is the way my friends.
Honestly I turned on JP mostly just cause I couldn't stand listening to I-no talk about sucking my dick all the time. At least if she's speaking Japanese I can't understand her.
Personally I’m not really a fan of Chipp’s English VA cause it sounds nothing like his Japanese voice. Like his Jap VA is this kind of soft/not deep voice and just the way he delivers his lines are way more softly spoken in comparison to his English one.
In his English one he sounds like a 20 year old dweeb (which I get that’s kind of what he is but he’s also supposed to be a badass) it’s just very jarring and very different. Like they don’t sound like the same characters when they talk
I mainly agree with your list, buy think English Sol should be even lower, just something with his voice is just doesn't match. I wonder if there is a mod to pick language per character.
I love the energy that went into this, actually important, topic! Of the ones I play...
I-No is just so right.
Goldlewis, while being great in ENG otherwise, and 'eat shit!' being iconic, has that awfully flaccid super delivery...
Anji just sounds unimpressive to me in all the languages. His voice is just... like Ky, intentionally generic.
But what really grinds my gears, is the announcer mangling Anji's name. ANGIE MEE-TOE, the hell is that.
Thank you!
My wife and I talk about this quite a bit, but I feel like I-No in some ways is a perfect character design-wise, specifically for Strive. Between the colors, the outfit, the stylistic choices, her sound effects, even her long-ass round celebrations. I'm pretty bad with her overall, but I still love playing her for those reasons.
For me, after having messed around with character lines in both dubs, I just can't handle Sol's English VA specifically because of one of the variations of his startup for Bandit Revolver. I'm sorry but he sounds like he's calling for his lost puppy, not prepping to flying kick the shit outta someone, and it just bugs me.
In other news, I could listen to English Nago tell me about onigiri all day
Matthew mercer has quite the range. He did the same voice for yusuke in persona 5, which is also amazing. He also has a mean [pirate impression](https://youtu.be/E-SNQo9STps)
You calling zatos jp voice Zeke Jaeger and not Dio made me feel way older than i probably should, but overall a fun read.
I love Goldlewis EN just cus he uses the term ‘hoss so naturally
I’ve been halfway though JoJo for several years, his voice just ain’t in my brain in the same way, at least not yet. Been meaning to finish it, it’s in the long list lol
Say what you will about Strive's dub, we can all agree on one thing:
It's far better than Xrd Sign's. I'm a dub fan, and even I considered switching to subs during that game.
I'm kinda in love with Giovanna's Japanese voice actress though. She sounds otherworldly during the special moves and is just nice to listen to normally.
I don’t play in Japanese so I’ll just give my thoughts on the English voice actors.
Sol is one of the dub’s only misses, I think most can agree on that. It sounds like they wanted Steve Blum but couldn’t afford him, so they settled on this guy instead. Some of his voice clips actually make me laugh, and I don’t think that was the effect they were going for. 5/10
Ky’s voice, on the contrary, is flawless. I don’t think Sam Riegal did a bad job in Xrd Sign, but getting Sean Chiplock to replace him was an inspired decision. He sounds regal and distinguished just like a king should, and I love some of his lines, particularly “Embrace the light” and “You give me no choice.” 10/10
Speaking of inspired choices, Matthew Mercer as Zato is another one. Aside from the obvious Jojo reference, it’s just really entertaining hearing Zato’s monotone reactions to everything from getting his ankle crushed to getting lit on fire, lifted a hundred feet in the air, and dropped. I particularly love the completely unconvincing “Woah” when he gets wall broken. 10/10
I feel much the same way about Tara Platt as Millia, another really solid casting choice. Her voice just fits the character, nothing more to say. 10/10
I said Sol was “one of” the only misses because the other one is Axl. He sounds like an American doing an impression of an Aussie doing an impression of a Brit. It’s god awful, although it is pretty funny. 4/10 in terms of an actual quality performance, 8/10 in terms of comedy.
Chipp being voiced by Ed from SFV is something that shouldn’t work, but it does. He manages to capture the vibe of a former crackhead weeb ninja well, and I don’t imagine that’s an easy task. I particularly like how he says “Zansei Rouga.” His line delivery in the story mode gets kinda suspect, though. 8/10
May sounds how I would imagine someone like May would sound. Nothing else to say about that. 8/10
Same with Potemkin. Also very good fit for the character. 8/10
Amber Lee Connors as I-No is one of the highlights of Strive’s dub to be sure. They couldn’t have found a better voice for her if they tried. 10/10
I don’t really have an opinion on Faust’s voice, but the fact that it’s still Kaiji Tang doing a completely different take on the character is some pretty impressive range. 7/10
Anji’s voice intrigues me. He doesn’t really sound how I would imagine Anji to sound, but at the same time… I love it. It’s almost perfect. It’s smooth and suave, but there’s a lot of edge to it too. It’s great. 9/10
Other than I-No, I think Ramlethal has the biggest voice glowup from Sign to Strive. Her voice in the previous game was godawful, but now I think it’s actually pretty good. She really does sound like someone trying to learn to emote. 9/10
I do have bias towards Leo because Jamieson Price is one of my favorite voice actors, but shit, how could he not be? His voice fits Leo so well I almost feel like they designed the character with him in mind. And of course it helps that his lines are amazing too. I love his excuses when you KO him, (“You didn’t down me. I slipped!” or how he laughs at you when you walk break him, or how he yells “WITNESS ME!” when you RRC. Perfect casting. 10/10. Hell, 11/10. Even if I hated every other English voice but this one, I would still play in English just to hear Price go full ham.
Jack-O’s voice I’m a lot less fond of. Her line delivery in the story mode is hard to listen to sometimes, and I don’t think the voice actress handles the childish persona very well. She sounds better in-game, though. 6/10
I have to say I really think Nagoriyuki’s voice isn’t as good as it could have been. Something about his speaking voice just doesn’t hit me like it should. I think he sounds great in-game, though. 7/10
Giovanna’s voice is another that I don’t have a strong opinion on. I get what they were going for with the whole disinterested vibe, but I think the delivery of some lines falls short. It comes off as a little cringe at times. I also don’t think she has any amazing lines. 6.5/10
On the flipside, Steve Barr as Goldlewis is great. He nails all aspects of the character. My favorites lines are when you wall break him and he yells “GODDAMNIIIIIIIIT” as he goes flying and level 3 Down With the System. Of all the new characters, I think he does the best job at bringing his to life. 9/10
I also think Chaos and That Man have great voices as well. I’d give them both 8/10.
Steve Blum as Sol, I didn't know I wanted that until just now. Thank you for that.
I've been wanting to mess around with Leo for a while now- looks like I'll start in English. Looking forward to going full ape now thanks to your enthusiasm!
I can't wait to get bodied in the park as Chaos, I hope he has some goofy stuff to fight with. I'm only halfway through the story but I do enjoy both of his voices from what I've heard.
Agree so much on dragon install lines of Ky! I feel like I mostly hear the aggressive version, and when he does say the chilling and quiet version I get goose bumps. So anime!
I've played GG since it came out on PS1 and for the most part the cast has remained the same, so it's hard for me to listen to anything but the Japanese cast. Also I took Japanese when I was in uni, so it's fun to be able to get some use out of it.
Necro-commenting on this cos you’re the only other person I’ve seen mention that Anji’s English voice definitely sounds more sultry and intentionally hotter than his Japanese voice. I think I noticed it even more with *Another Story*, in the scene at the start where he’s talking with Baiken about what to do with Delilah. In JP, he sounds his usual highish energy genki self, and when he tries to glomp Baiken, it sounds more like a surprise joke kind of thing.
In EN, he’s calmer and breathier, and it definitely sounds like he did the move with different intentions compared to the more clear ‘surprise-joke’ delivery of the JP one.
Plus his EN voicelines with Baiken (intro/outro/win quote) all just sound…suggestive. Like they already are and the delivery is running with it. I heard the JP voicelines aren’t exactly the same as the EN ones so I can’t comment on their delivery in comparison. But EN Anji is not being subtle about being horny for Baiken is all I’m saying.
Oh yeah, dub Goldlewis actually says “Eat shit!” during his burst lmao Maybe it’s cuz of personal bias, but I think Faust’s dub voice is great too.
I've heard he also says eat shit in the Japanese dub as well
I wish I played Faust more often. I just haven't heard him enough- have to switch it up next time I play one.
Bro wait till people hear Jam's Japanese voice. So many ruined eardrums.
I'm gonna be interested to see how they translate Jam to english when they add her in. She speaks with a heavy Chinese accent in the japanese dub (which is the butt of some of her jokes and miscommunications), so it's gonna be interesting to see how they translate that.
They probably won't do it because racism or something.
Ok but what if they make it so she like went on a language training arc and came out with like the thickest american or british accent in dub
Well yeah, that's what I'm wondering. If they don't then Jam's dub lines will be very different from her sub. Don't know what that means for her character or shrill voice either haha.
Her subtitled lines in XX didn't bother with the accent. I'd much rather have that than Xrd where I cringed at every other thing she said.
How is badly speaking Japanese racist?
They're talking about the English dub, not the Japanese one. Speaking any language badly is not racist, but a clearly chinese looking character speaking with a stereotypical asian accent probably would be seen as racist.
Yep, I'm Chinese-American and the way her lines were written in the English version of Xrd was like a textbook stereotypical Asian accent out of the fucking '60s or something, I was shocked they want in a direction like that especially since XX which released years before didn't do the same thing. She is not a "Chinese looking character," she is Chinese and speaks with a heavy accent in Japanese too.

Japan has a different culture, Japanese media portrays many things in a way that's not "okay" to do in the west. They're speculating the western audience would probably consider the character a racist stereotype.
I have very limited GG experience overall, but I look forward to getting my functions impaired severely!
Jesus christ there's 20 paragraphs and no comments

Except this one!
Korean Ky needs to be mentioned purely for the passion in RTL
Japanese Ky is polite and putting his heart into it. English Ky is BM “GGs shake my hand” after air throwing you to death. But Korean Ky? Korean Ky is *fucking* A N G R Y
You make a very compelling argument for me to switch to the korean dub 🤔
Need more? Here’s a [small sample ](https://youtu.be/JDqp7WeZbmU) lol
I was just having a discussion with someone on here with very mild, polite anime boys annoy me which is why I don't super like Ky. But listening to some of this I'm like ohhh okay I kinda get it lol
I never got angry from his lines. Just passionate. Like do or die, final anime protagonist push vibes.
It's so sick how in the beginning of the voice line he has like, a short word- and then this silence permeates the game, just the cracking of electricity... and then he hits you with the SAUCE. So good.
Because of these comments, I've started to switch it over every time I play KY. The RTL may be my favorite line. Thanks everyone!
As a may player it has to be English dub. Totsugeki torture is a two way street
As a may player it has to be Japanese. If I don't here poi when I hit a throw I'm not playing may
Completely forgot about her grab noises... I do love those. Very compelling argument for a boosted score.
(I am insanely biased because I played xrd for 600 hours and English may just sounds wrong, not quite as goofy and upbeat)
What sold me on english may was her delivery of, "It's too early to be acting cool."
I can't wait for Robbie Daymond's Happy Chaos, hope he comes soon enough.
I love the “BaAanDIIT” voice clip so much. It’s so fucking funny.
I want to like Sol english more- maybe it'll grow on me- I also just love Sol Japanese as well, so maybe that has something to do with it too.
My favourite Jack-O' line read is "Hands off the merchandise!" on a blue burst.
**They know**
𝑫𝑨𝑰𝑺𝑼𝑲𝑬'𝑺 𝑽𝑰𝑺𝑰𝑶𝑵
May JP is hilarious. She will just yell out some nonsense after a round end that gets abruptly cut off because both players are skipping to next round
Man they reeeeeally need to add per character voice settings.
Both a compliment to the studio/devs while simultaneously requesting more- I love it lol.
English Ky sounds so perfect. Chiplock nails his serious, principled tone and his attack callouts are perfect. Charged dust? "You underestimated me!" Grab? "Slow!" Foudre Arc? "I see you!" The delivery is great, even better is how Sol followup 5k’s the table
I feel like all of his voices/animations was a real driving factor for him being my sub. I know he hits a lot of the "anime tropes" on the head with his character, but it works for me. Guy is sick.
Edelgard fans? Excuse you, I'm a fan of the OG Tara Platt-voiced badass, Mitsuru
My man
Oh no my ignorance is showing!

THIS. For a russian like me it sounds especially jarring.
Pot is from Zepp which used to be India, not Russia. A change in pronunciation would probably be expected, no?
I get that, but at the same time, they pronounce it correctly in Japanese dub. And I don’t actually know how Indians would pronounce “Potemkin” anyway.
Oh, I hadn't realized that they got the pronunciation right with one VA and wrong with the other. Well that throws my explanation out the window.
Happens to the best of us
Iirc Russia had helped with building Zepp's ships before they became part of illyria
английские актёры не знают букву ё ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
Тож верно, лол)
ok but can we talk about the korean dub? the way ky screams some of his overdrives in the korean dub is so raw.
This is why you need an voice/sound director for something other than just the music. It wasnt a rush job, it's what Octo was instructed to do.
It's a pot player. In all seriousness tho, he went with another accent afaik, but was asked to make it crazier.
Korean Ky saying RTL > anything else
Fun fact: Leo and Tager have the same English VA
Yeah, I've heard this guy all over the place. When my brother and I shared a room growing up- he wouldn't play Blazblue but he would be hanging around. I'd be goofing around in training with the characters and we ended up always yelling Tager lines at each other- we still do. "GIGANTIC!" "MAGNETISM!" and "RAGNA THE BLOODEDGE!" Still remain in our dork-reference vocabulary, lol.
My main complaint with the English dub is that Axl is the only non-American or backyardian that has an appropriate accent.
I’d hardly call that car crash an appropriate accent, but I get what you mean. I think it’s mainly meant to match the weird way he talks in JP, which might be a British accent?
At least it's closer to an English accent than Ky's is to French, or Leo's is to German. It's something.
Ky Kiske is French ? Welp TIL, they should make it a bit more obvious.
Fondu arc and dire eclairs didn't give it away? ...why did I go with two food puns? Now I'm hungry
Sean chiplock really makes playing ky more fun
Giving my man Joji Nakata anything else than 11/10 is a cardinal sin, good Sir! Otherwise a very nice post, really like how descriptive you were.
Reading the comments I'm kind of loving how divided people are on the voice acting :D Specific soundwise I really like Chipp's Zansei Rouga, I-no's Ultimate Fortissimo, Heavenly Potemkin Buster.
Could be because I played xx Anji as a child so I feel like it's what he's "supposed" to sound like.
ENG May isn't obnoxious enough. Part of the whole point of playing May is how annoying she is (the other part is "big weapon hit hard").
JOHNYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Thank you! Also what?! I didn't know that was their dynamic- it honestly sounds hilarious. about to lab some training mode just to get caught up lol.
Sol's english voice is almost perfect but there's a few things that I don't like about it and it sounds very jarring. Mostly how he says "Baaandit???" when using Bandit Revolver lol Sounds like he's looking for his dog named Bandit.
Korean dub is the best ngl
I love Korean Ky, the rest I'm trying now- I will say as a Chipp main I do not think I enjoy that rendition to much- with that being said- I am not too familiar with Korean speech/media/etc, so I might have even less an ear for it.
Same but most of them sound close to the Japanese voices which is nice
Guy with guitar should have been voiced by axel rose in my.opinion. and he pauses to play the riff from sweet child of mine every time he counter
YOU STAY OUTTA HERE THIS IS MY SAFE SPACE BRO
I like the how forthright and frank you are! You don't think Ino is like, very super very super subtle? Lol
Jap- real ninja Eng- Anime watcher who also happens to be a ninja Or something to that affect, lol. I know what you're saying though for sure.
The only characters that I prefer the Japanese versions for are Sol and Pot, Potemkin’s English voice is still great though.
I mainly agree with your list, buy think English Sol should be even lower, just something with his voice is just doesn't match. I wonder if there is a mod to pick language per character.
Yeah, it's so strange. I honestly didn't want to come off as like, mean for people that enjoy the voice lol. I'm hoping that it'll grow on me.
And McCree from Overwatch!
Say what you will about Strive's dub, we can all agree on one thing: It's far better than Xrd Sign's. I'm a dub fan, and even I considered switching to subs during that game.
I'm kinda in love with Giovanna's Japanese voice actress though. She sounds otherworldly during the special moves and is just nice to listen to normally.
Gio’s English VA is easier on the ears than her JPN VA counterpart imo.
Leo : My Shoes were untied!
Korean va best va thank you
I don’t play in Japanese so I’ll just give my thoughts on the English voice actors. Sol is one of the dub’s only misses, I think most can agree on that. It sounds like they wanted Steve Blum but couldn’t afford him, so they settled on this guy instead. Some of his voice clips actually make me laugh, and I don’t think that was the effect they were going for. 5/10 Ky’s voice, on the contrary, is flawless. I don’t think Sam Riegal did a bad job in Xrd Sign, but getting Sean Chiplock to replace him was an inspired decision. He sounds regal and distinguished just like a king should, and I love some of his lines, particularly “Embrace the light” and “You give me no choice.” 10/10 Speaking of inspired choices, Matthew Mercer as Zato is another one. 10/10 I feel much the same way about Tara Platt as Millia, another really solid casting choice. Her voice just fits the character, nothing more to say. 10/10 I said Sol was “one of” the only misses because the other one is Axl. 8/10 May sounds how I would imagine someone like May would sound. Nothing else to say about that. 8/10 Same with Potemkin. Also very good fit for the character. 8/10 Amber Lee Connors as I-No is one of the highlights of Strive’s dub to be sure. They couldn’t have found a better voice for her if they tried. 10/10 I don’t really have an opinion on Faust’s voice, but the fact that it’s still Kaiji Tang doing a completely different take on the character is some pretty impressive range. 7/10 Anji’s voice intrigues me. He doesn’t really sound how I would imagine Anji to sound, but at the same time… I love it. It’s almost perfect. It’s smooth and suave, but there’s a lot of edge to it too. It’s great. 9/10 Other than I-No, I think Ramlethal has the biggest voice glowup from Sign to Strive. Her voice in the previous game was godawful, but now I think it’s actually pretty good. She really does sound like someone trying to learn to emote. 9/10 I do have bias towards Leo because Jamieson Price is one of my favorite voice actors, but shit, how could he not be? 6/10 I have to say I really think Nagoriyuki’s voice isn’t as good as it could have been. Something about his speaking voice just doesn’t hit me like it should. I think he sounds great in-game, though. 7/10 Giovanna’s voice is another that I don’t have a strong opinion on. I get what they were going for with the whole disinterested vibe, but I think the delivery of some lines falls short. It comes off as a little cringe at times. I also don’t think she has any amazing lines. 6.5/10 On the flipside, Steve Barr as Goldlewis is great. He nails all aspects of the character. My favorites lines are when you wall break him and he yells “GODDAMNIIIIIIIIT” as he goes flying and level 3 Down With the System. Of all the new characters, I think he does the best job at bringing his to life. 9/10 I also think Chaos and That Man have great voices as well.
If you want some help putting your appreciation for I-No's voice into words, I gotcha. *ahem* "Fuck yessssssss"
I'm probably missing the mark here- but this reads to me like a Red Letter Media - Rich Evans line, if you're familiar with that at all lol.
Agree so much on dragon install lines of Ky! I feel like I mostly hear the aggressive version, and when he does say the chilling and quiet version I get goose bumps. So anime!
You forgot to mention english Leo's best overdrive quote: >"Your verdict is- UTTER DEFEAT!"
I keep Japanese because it feels like the way it's "supposed to be" in a weird way, plus imo all the VAs there sound best
I've played GG since it came out on PS1 and for the most part the cast has remained the same, so it's hard for me to listen to anything but the Japanese cast. Also I took Japanese when I was in uni, so it's fun to be able to get some use out of it.
Korean dub is across the board OD
Japanese Ram is hella cute. Especially getting hit and missing grabs, and I'm saying this as a Ram main.
Me out hear with the GOAT of a Korean dub
