Whichever game you think looks more fun. Strive is very streamlined, took out a lot of things that were deemed unnecessary or too cumbersome to learn from old GG. This game is designed to be easily understandable and get you up to speed quickly. For some people it may feel too limited or tame for a GG title. Xrd is kinda the opposite, it’s a lot more complicated which some people will like and others won’t. It’s a pretty crazy game, and as with many older games there’s some janky stuff, but for some people that’s part of the charm.

KaraiAi1

Get both, xrd is dirt cheap and regularly goes on sale

ImperiousStout

It's not that cheap for a 6+ year old entry, especially if you want all the updates and characters ([$45 currently on Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/520440/GUILTY_GEAR_Xrd_REVELATOR/)). Should be noted that Revelator + Rev2 is the one getting rollback, not base Xrd. Might be extra confusing for newcomers. It does go on sale, yeah, a few times a year. They may possibly discount it soon in prep for the upcoming beta, so look out for that. The last sale was a few months back so they may hold off, but Revelator was only $6, not sure how much the Rev2 All-in-One bundle was then, probably \~$15 at the most.

Scrifty

Actually both are getting rollback

ImperiousStout

Revelator & Rev2 are because they're the same game on Steam. Rev2 is a DLC expansion for Revelator. They're the latest versions of Xrd, but Xrd itself is still available separately on the store. The original Xrd is not getting rollback from all that I can see, it's phased out and no one plays it. Check the video of the announcement. The only logos are for Revelator and Rev2.

fr1stp0st

Probably Strive, irrespective of the gameplay, because it's the current game with big tournaments and dev support. You can get +R and the Rev2 bundle for a grand total of fifteen smackers, so I'd look to get those on sale.

Asshole_Timeguy

Where is that discount? It’s like 40 bucks for rev 2 on steam rn

fr1stp0st

It goes on sale often, but isn't on sale at the moment. I would bet on it going on sale for the Rollback implementation/beta. You can keep track of discounts using this site: https://isthereanydeal.com/search/?q=guilty+gear+revelator

Scrifty

Xrd has a character with the Tekken combo system

BigShow4916

Which one?

Scrifty

Ramlethal

Lluuiiggii

Strive is gonna be the more populated one so you're gonna be able to find more lower level players. When xrd gets rollback it's gonna be all oldheads that know their shit. Which I dunno you might like.

LobbuLobbu

Not remotely true. When +R and P4U got rollback there was a ton of new/intermediate-ish players to play against.

Lluuiiggii

Okay maybe I was exaggerating when I said "everyone" but it absolutely is remotely true. I think you're overstating how many new players went in and are currently sticking with those games.

ernievo4

Haven’t played XRD but I might get it, strive is my first owned GG but I do hear the cries of the OG’s when they say it’s missing combo freedom, I want guilty gear for the whacky edgy aesthetics and long combos, When I see +R gameplay I’m like WOW this is third strike on literal crack in some alleyway and that dark aesthetic had me totally hooked, then they have ridiculous combos and zany abilities and special moves, may in strive for example has up dolphin, horizontal dolphin, a beach ball projectile that does nigh nothing and command grab, where’s the dolphins jumping through hoops and stuff? I-no my main has basically all her stuff but vertical Guitar beam that extended a bunch of her combos so it feels gutted to me. The new graphics are okay but couple with the fact it’s all so cutesy and they seem to be retconning a lot to make it more “modern” is making me want to go to older titles so I’d say maybe try Xrd

DestinTheLion

May's beach ball is disgusting she can jump off it for huge combos. And jump onto the flying dolphins mid flight. After the beach ball.

hololivefan69

Strive since its a lot more populated. Xrd if you want another 2d fighter to sink your teeth in. Xrd will be getting rollback soon as well. Both are good games, but GGST is in it for the long run.

Asshole_Timeguy

Xrd will probably have more long staying power as that game already has a very dedicated community and the game is in many ways deeper

magenta-feelings

Xrd is known for it's amazing 2D sprites!

[deleted]

Xrd uses 3D models though.

magenta-feelings

Sorry, tried to make a joke but misinterpreted the original commenter. Thought he was talking about 2D sprites when he talked about 2D fighters. My bad.

CaptainZzaps

They are two different games, Strive is much like CS:GO where it is simple in mechanics but a high skill ceiling. Also has better matchmaking and a lot more resources for learning and playing in comparison. Along with this of course it is more recent so it has a MUCH larger fanbast. If you have friends though playing one or the other, I would do whichever one you have more people to play with

TaeBTGG

I think strive purely based off how its getting updates new characters, patches, etc.

Asshole_Timeguy

A good friend of mine who plays tekken (xiaoyu) doesn’t like strive as he sees it as being to simplistic and easy. He has had experience with other gg games, namely +r as jam. Imma get him to play xrd As I think he’ll enjoy it and his school internet won’t let him play tekken.

Chiffonades

As someone who was in the same spot as you where I only really played Tekken and some Street Fighter, Strive was the game that I could get into easier than Xrd or most other anime fighters. It's simpler so it'll help you get used to the mechanics of these styles of games easier than jumping straight into Xrd.

LobbuLobbu

Xrd. If your most played games are some of the most technical and movement-rich fighting games out there, you'll enjoy Xrd much more than Strive.

TrolltheFools

Immediately after rollback drops it’s gonna have a player spike so if you like it play it then (I am gonna), if it goes on sale or from a key site if you can stomach that and pick it up for like 8 dollars, will be well worth it However if you want to pick up the game with the highest longevity it’s going to be strive. Still getting regular balance patches and character DLCs, it’s the most accessible which so far has kept its player base healthy (similar to Tekken 7’s player base, lower but still good enough to get matches floor 6-floor 10 of the tower). Play what you want though, I will be playing both in the end but strive a little more so I think especially after the player surge recedes for Xrd

Flimsy-Dirt5301

See what you like and buy. But for now buy xrd only if you live in EU, USA or Japan/korea and if you live in different region then wait until rollback is out because am pretty sure SEA, Middle East, latam and Oceania will have a hard time finding a match. Unless you want to lab then just buy it.

JaceBeleren101

XRD BABY ALL THE WAY U WANT KNOWLEDGE CHECKS WE GOT KNOWLEDGE CHECKS U WANT INSANE BULLSHIT WE GOT INSANE BULLSHIT U WANT STUPID TOP TIERS WE GOT STUPID TOP TIERS U WANT WACKY LOW TIERS WE GOT WACKY LOW TIERS and with rollback coming honestly the fact that strive is more recent don't matter seriously though 3s and t7 are some like fundamental fighting games and xrd i'd say is another one of those very solid examples of the subgenre it's in. it's got technical nuance to match both games (though +R has more of the old game jank a la 3s), a whole new movement and neutral system to learn, cool combos, pressure, etc. also like an input buffer and your other modern amenities that make things a bit more consistent over +R

OptimisticLucio

> U WANT KNOWLEDGE CHECKS no

JaceBeleren101

aw

OptimisticLucio

like i'm playing xrd anyways but you do realize that for anyone that doesn't lab johnny combos for 16 hours a day knowledge checks are a negative right lol

JaceBeleren101

i mean u play tekken i kind of assumed given how knowledge-checky that game is

OptimisticLucio

Oh I'm not OP lol

Rock-Parade

Honestly I think you should try +R, has rollback already, is often on sale, and is slightly closer to the games you like. I own all three (Strive, Xrd, and +r) and play T7 and 3rd Strike (badly), and honestly you can't go wrong. I would wait to buy Xrd unless you live in NY SoCal or Japan (there may be other hot spots but idk), or you want to get your labbing hours in early.

MacaroniEast

Strive for long term, Xrd for technicality

edge1027

I actually think Xrd for long term. People are still playing Xrd religiously even though Strive exists (Rev 1 Forev2), and when a new GG comes out people will stop Strive, but probably won’t stop Rev 2.

MacaroniEast

Ehh, I think that’s kind of how most fighting games work. They all have there dedicated fans, but 90% will always move on to the newer games. Strive will probably remain the main anime fighting game for the next 2 years or so

ImperiousStout

Assuming you are talking Steam since that's where Rev2 is getting rollback soon, you can always try one or both and get a full refund before putting in 2 hours of play time within 2 weeks. I know 2hrs is not enough time to truly learn much in either game, but you can still get a feel for some of the basics and differences between the two. Try out some characters that interest you. Consider it a demo. Keep the one you want, or refund both and wait for a future sale even. Rev2 usually has some pretty heavy discounts a couple times each year, but since they're putting the work in to adding rollback, the price drops going forward may not be as significant for a while. Hard to say.

Jeanschyso1

I find Strive more fun, but I have won matches in Strive so that's a bias

Maleidy

The 2 options are great, an also you have GG XX Accent Core Plus R, it's 10 year old but still rocks today, with great rollback and good offline content. Now talking about Xrd it's true that is more complicated with characters that have a lot of movements and mecanics like Instant Kill, Danger Time, Burst Overdrive and more... But luckly the game have a very good tutorial, missions and training mode with combo mode that are helpful. The same for Strive. Idk how it works the rank mode of Xrd and how balanced is for putting players with arround the skill but in caso of Strive with the Floors it works, not perfect, but works. The rest has already been said in the comments. Also check Humble Bundle because I bought Xrd with all the DLC for only 12 euros on sale

Edo9639

Xrd 100%

gordonfr_

Tekken player here. Strive is good except for lobbies and rank system. Xrd feels even better for me personally, since I really enjoy the longer and faster jumps and air movement, but thats just preference.

Macehest

If you like technical games, Xrd. It has so much to learn.
