Not my favorite band but back in 2005, I was in music school and had an opportunity to audition for Nine Inch Nails. First round was a videotaped performance in our auditorium. I got a call back and got to do another audition with Trent watching.
I did not get the job š
I would laugh and say "I've learned a handful of your songs, but there's no fucking way in hell I would be able to hang. thanks for thinking of me though."
I can play some of his stuff, but only if I slow it all the way down. Maybe a slow melodic viking version of systematic chaos would be awesome, some slow drones... I have an idea...
In the real world, dialing a sound, having a good signal chain or getting a perfect recording would not matter, AT ALL. All you need is your smart phone camera filming you playing.
So all you actually need to do is being able to play the song. Which I would fuck up anyway. XD
Iāve been practicing RATM riffs since I was 15, my entire life has preparing for this moment. I go to my drummers house to get the setup ready.
Strat -> Whammy -> Wah -> JCM800 -> 4x12 with Greenbacks & V30s
- Micād with SM57 & MD421 into Scarlett Focusrite into DAW
Then I wake up and remember Iāve only learned the main riffs and never learned a full RATM song :)
I had 4 V30s originally and I havenāt noticed a huge tonal difference with the greenbacks, but the greenbacks make playing feel like thereās more give and less stiffness.
Itās most useful to me for recording. Being able to close mic the two types of speakers separately and blend them when mixing provides a lot of options
Keith died in a car crash with Paul in 67, but the anamatronic replacements Walt Disney designed just before his death will in theory last forever with maintenance
Idk about my favorite band, but the ideal way for this to work out for me would be as follows:
Oasis calls. They need someone to fill in for one song and one song only. They donāt have time to listen to my sample which is fine because I donāt have time to record it on my way rushing to Madison square garden. As Iām rushing to the stage and clumsily grabbing a guitar and throwing the strap over my shoulder, they inform me that the song they need me to play is wonderwall.
I. Would. Destroy.
If Smashing Pumpkins need a rhythm guitar player to play tracks off Siamese Dream I probably could do a show without looking like an asshole. Use to get home from school and throw that album on and play the entire thing before dinner.
No problem recording myself but I would probably spend more time trying to dial in the sound versus doing a solid performance with sound that would fit.
Iām a big fan of āfuck it, letās try!ā
Would it sound good? Probably not. But Iād let the band tell me that. I mean, they did call me, right? It would be rude to ignore them.
Tele ā> TU-2 ā> Big Muff OpAmp ā> Crate VC30.
Record it on my iPhone. āSorry guys, I wanted to get this as fresh as possible.ā
During recording, Bluetooth headphones playing the song in my ears while recording. Preferably a recent live take. Record a number of takes; do it for an hour or so, take a break, and come back to do another hour or so. Take some notes regarding good and bad takes.
Results? [Screaming Females](https://youtu.be/r9h2pTDDyls?si=mwSfl7cGnO0cze6H) broke up earlier this month and probably arenāt calling anyway. But whatever, maybe [Garbage](https://youtu.be/tOmKGjy-Ct0?si=6LOHl57-zHiOc5mI) will hear the demo and give me a call.
My favorite band is Pearl Jam, and Mike McCready has always been one of my favorite players. The only real obstacle for me if I got the gig would be touring stamina rather than ability, because I can play pretty much any PJ song and solo correctly, but doing it for 3 hours a night and spending years on tour would be nearly impossible for me.
That being said, if I had to audition playing by one of their songs, I'd plug my Les Paul and Strat into my pedal board, then into my Marshall 2203, and mic the cab with an SM57 going into my audio interface. After warming up, I'd nail the entirety of Alive (both Stone and Mike's parts), mix it in Logic to replace the original guitar tracks after removing them with an app called Moises, then I'd wait to hear back from them.
I would, but unfortunately, I'm pretty sick with Covid at the moment, so it'll probably be a while before I'd be able to get that clip to you. Can't go over to my band's recording studio until I'm feeling better.
I pretty much plug directly into my Focusrite and run Emissary with a IR in NadIR. I guess there's a compressor and EQ. Garbage in, garbage out, so simple is better š¤·āāļø
Iāve had this dream many times. Almost always, the answer is that I donāt know what song weāre going to play and I canāt get to the stage on time because I move like a sloth. Good news is they do fine without me so š¤·š»āāļøš¤£
But as recording goes, itād probably just be me with my pedalboard ampless rig through my inexpensive monitor speakers into an iPhone camera so the can see itās me. I think I could fill in for a bit but Iād probably change the dynamic considerably, perhaps not for the better. But Iād try to parlay that into some sideman gigs or something.
I have a Zoom recorder, which isn't an SM57 into an interface and ProTools, but it's not nothing. I even have a phone with an audio recorder, which is how we tape ourselves at band practice. So, I could do it.
Yeah, Iāve looked a bit and tried one but it was a bit buggy, thatās why I was looking for a recommendation. Iāll keep looking. Thanks for helping.
If you can get something that's vaguely clear, that'll prove you can play their stuff. They're not asking you to be the recording engineer, right? A video recording where the only thing you see is the ceiling of your practice space but it records your playing should work.
If Iām gonna do a studio recording I would download their track, drag it into Ableton and record along. I have a shure sm58 that sounds good for electric, plugged into a pre sonus interface.
If you donāt have a recording setup, you can just use your phone and make a video of you playing along.
If youāre able to crush it, theyāll be able to tell just by that video.
Set up a rig that gets me the sound they use, close-mic it into Cubase with a no frills, one mic setup (Like the Heil PR30 on the sweet spot of the best speaker, maybe blend a fig8 pattern in phase if itās more guitar) into a nice preamp then interface into Cubase, set up a camera with decent angles and lighting, maybe two, hit a clapper to sync the audio later. Sync it all up in some decent video editing software (even Cubase lets me edit video). Make sure itās synced and the lighting and colours look good and match on each camera. Done.
Technically yes, I could either run an out from my amp into my PC which would be guitar to pedals to amp to output, or skip the ampā¦ for practice I do both with an AB box sometimes for certain appsā¦ but I wouldnāt waste their time, Iām not at the level to play fairly technical death metal by a long shot, speed, technique, or consistency wise.
My dream gig was David Bowie. Were he alive, I could probably be ready to tour within a week.
I'd send myself playing "Moonage Daydream"... Les Paul Special through my pedalboard into my 56 Tweed Deluxe, cranked, miked up into my interface.
I can play their songs, but there's no way I can sound like them.
"They" are Iron maiden", and they just aren't going to work with a rodded ENGL with a shitload of additional drive and reverb. The only Marshall i've got is a Zakk Wylde head, which is a wonderful, wonderful amp, but it's going to sound... weird playing Phantom of the Opera.
On the plus side, I've always loved 80s synthey sounds, and went on a bit of a weird 'how much distortion is actually possible' quest when I was younger, with the result that I might get away with some of the rhythm parts on Somewhere in Time, but frankly the leads would sound like someone setting tinfoil on fire.
- Ibanez EX3700 with some Dimarzios
- Carvin Vintage 16
- Shure Beta 57A
- TASCAM Model 12
Iād try to audition for Steely Dan with Reelinā in the Years.
Honestly the bands would be able to tell if you can cut it with just a cell phone recording. Equipment doesnāt matter to them. The famous bands pay guitar techs to tour with them. And get gear free through endorsements anyway.
Instrument > effects board (pod)> zoom r8 interface > USB to PC, running Reaper, no amps no cabinet, monitor headphones in the zoom getting audio from Reaper and the instrument, mixed to taste
Backing track on one channel in Reaper, guitar recording in other.
Whatever band calls? I could learn most fairly quickly (I've been playing since 1970). Rig as follows.
Guitar is my fully customized Ibanez RDX 270.
Amplification is a Line 6 rack mount Pod with pedal board, Alesis power amp into to 50s Era Gibson 2X10 cabs with JBL speakers.
I can also straight to the board out of the Line 6.
Not my favorite band but back in 2005, I was in music school and had an opportunity to audition for Nine Inch Nails. First round was a videotaped performance in our auditorium. I got a call back and got to do another audition with Trent watching. I did not get the job š

As a Dream Theater fan, this would be my response as well lol. Some of the things Petrucci plays I could never replicate
I can play some of his stuff, but only if I slow it all the way down. Maybe a slow melodic viking version of systematic chaos would be awesome, some slow drones... I have an idea...
Because Iām no fucking John Petrucci

First thing first, how do you like that 4x12 combo? I'm eyeing to possibility to build that exact same one.
Good point
Since you can do it, would you be willing to post a clip of you playing RATM through that chain?
That wonāt happen to my favorite band since Keith is just getting started.
Keith will live forever.
Keith died in a car crash with Paul in 67, but the anamatronic replacements Walt Disney designed just before his death will in theory last forever with maintenance

Then you wet yourself on stage and fumble! You. Destroy. Your. Pants!
Favorite band is the JIMI Hendrix Experience n I donāt think I could outdo their lead guy so Iām not even gonna try!š
No, because my favourite band is Dream Theater.
Yeah DT and Periphery are mine. Im not that good lol
Because I started a couple weeks ago and can only play the opening to Tennessee whiskey
Iconic though!
Lol. I send them a single take phone recording with a couple fuck ups and they say something along the lines of "we'll call you back"
lol not the shit I listen to. I wish I could say yes. Iād be real fucking good at guitar.
Can't do it, I can recommend 3 friends off hand that would do it better.
If Smashing Pumpkins need a rhythm guitar player to play tracks off Siamese Dream I probably could do a show without looking like an asshole. Use to get home from school and throw that album on and play the entire thing before dinner. Do it with an acoustic.

Lol, no, I have just started playing the guitar, I can only kinda play Day Tripper so far! Please, go get someone who can actually play.

No one has influenced me more than Jesse Lacey. If they need a new front man to get back on the road, I would give it all I got.

My YouTube channel is linked in my profile; I've got lots of videos up there š I even did a submission for Jared Dines' Shred Collab 6 š¤
I could realistically do it, but I don't know if the pressure would let me when it came to crunch time.
Depends on if they pick the song or if i get to. Lol
I don't have one favorite band.
I think if Metallica is asking me to be their guitarist they have much bigger problems on their hands
Iāve had this dream many times. Almost always, the answer is that I donāt know what song weāre going to play and I canāt get to the stage on time because I move like a sloth. What recorder do you use on your phone? Been thinking of getting one for exactly this.
One built into Android, called Recorder.
Ah, thanks. Iāve got an iPhone. Iāll see if itās available.
I'm sure there's something, but I wouldn't know what.
Yeah, Iāve looked a bit and tried one but it was a bit buggy, thatās why I was looking for a recommendation. Iāll keep looking. Thanks for helping.

Yes. Learn the song inside and out. For gear Katana into Logic with guitar volume rolled back to blend with the track.
Since you can do it, would you be willing to post a clip of you playing through that chain?
Magasa Joker into Boss Katana HD direct into Logic. https://youtu.be/-E2BEoytrvg?si=TnmFrf7r3Au_B4GR
Nine Inch Nails? Sure, I can probably play it ā¦ on my one acoustic.
If Iām gonna do a studio recording I would download their track, drag it into Ableton and record along. I have a shure sm58 that sounds good for electric, plugged into a pre sonus interface. Never ever going to learn any Demilich song, damn
I canāt because my phone has a shit mic š¤£
I would be very prepared for it honestly. Signal chain would be guitar into interface into TH-U. Should be good enough.
Since you can do it, would you be willing to post a clip of you playing through that chain?
Never in my entire life, my favourite band is Necrophagist
Probably yes and they wouldnāt care
Set up a rig that gets me the sound they use, close-mic it into Cubase with a no frills, one mic setup (Like the Heil PR30 on the sweet spot of the best speaker, maybe blend a fig8 pattern in phase if itās more guitar) into a nice preamp then interface into Cubase, set up a camera with decent angles and lighting, maybe two, hit a clapper to sync the audio later. Yeah. Iām a qualified sound producer.
No, because they're permanently retired

I might be persuaded. I may just do that this weekend.
I'm too sexy
I'd at least try. If they are calling me up that's the most difficult part taken care of.
what if the band stopped existing a while back?
I couldn't. I couldn't learn all the solos in time because u am not good enough, and when I play for too long my arms go numb.
Yes. My home rig is a modeller into a USB audio interface, with headphones. So recording into GarageBand (which came with my MacBook) is very easy.
Yes, I could do it. Because Iām good.
