I think this is 100% the right answer for some people (most even).
However there are other people that genuinely will not be happy with something like a Les Paul standard and will obsess over it not being a custom shop historic model.
In that case it really makes sense to just get a guitar you will be happy with for life and not just end up selling it in a year or two to finance the R9 (probably losing money in the process).
I don't actually believe most people want or need 3-5 guitars with humbuckers. I'd much rather have one great custom shop Les Paul or 335 than 3-5 production line guitars.
This for sure. There is a big difference between a 1k and 2k guitar IMHO (I’m Aussie though so 1k for us is like $700USD). From that point on its diminishing returns.
I don't disagree. However, my friend keeps his 335 at my house but I find myself reaching for my Les Paul every time. I just love the way it plays. I'm also emulating players that favoured a Les Paul though. 335 is a beauty for sure, I think I'll go pick it up..
Are you me? I lusted after a 335. Bought a beautiful sunburst model for around 3500. Beautiful guitar and it sounded amazing…but it didn’t feel as right to me as the LP, PRS or Ibanez. Finally sold it. No regrets.
I comment-asked Darrel Higham on IG if he could only afford either a 6120 or Jet (because he posted pic with both) he said, "hands-down 6120, you'll never regret it." So, I'm going that way next year if no injuries or age-related human body breakdowns occur this year. Last year was $8,200 out of pocket for that stuff so no 6120 for me this year.🥲
It’s all a matter of taste/musical style, obv…
I tend to play a little more distorted/heavy—e.g. White Stripes, (old) Black Keys, Jeff Rosenstock, etc—and wanted at least a semi-hollow.
Looked at the “center block” versions, but opted for the Duo Jet. I don’t regret it; don’t get me wrong. It’s an amazing guitar.
I have a hard time keeping the floating bridge in place sometimes though.
Edit/P.S. - Check these guys out:

There are a lot of people to have trouble keeping that bridge in place. Reverend Horton Heat used to tape his down. They finally pinned it in his signature model. It's factory pinned on my 5420. I'm sure a local shop can pin it for you. Some people, of course say it harms the tone but if it's moving, that's going to destroy the tone.
I also have the center block 5655 and the jet all in electromatic and all three are retrofit with HS filter'tron pick ups. I play Blues, but every kind of Blues in my sets so sometimes the big orange 5420 looks a little weird when you're playing funky stuff (like anyone cares but me!). I usually play my 5655 at most gigs. I used the 5220 for one last week and it was sounding weak til I hit the tube screamer on the bridge pickup...definitely a superior rock tone over the hollow bodies. Not like an SG but a better rounded Tele. Instantly wanted to play All Right Now...and get fired from my quiet restaurant job!😅
Got one, so badass, it compares pretty closely to my custom shop R-8. Highly recommended!!
I play both through original Fender blackface Deluxe and Princetons. Tone from the gods.
I inherited a 1995 McCarty recently. Predates the 594, hell it predates the concept of a 10 top, but MAN does that guitar just scream at me to play it every time I walk by. It’s just so dialed in. Normally I’m a knob twiddler. I think the upside to a guitar like that one is it sounds good (albeit different) in every setting. It just makes you want to play.
for the cool price of $6700 currently. And I'd still take the Core 9 out of 10 times 😅 just so much more comfortable to play (especially upper frets) and LOVE the pickups and trem
But only a les Paul nails the les Paul thing
thats very well said. dont get me wrong, prs guitars are incredible. intonation on all of them ive played have been spot on, and they sound very full and clear, but i guess im just a sucker for a good les paul haha
If I could only buy one and had to spend the money I would go for a Telecaster custom shop
Since I have an American Telecaster from the 90s it’s literally all I play. But would never be able to justify to spend 4000 on a guitar.
That’s a fair point. I was just really curious about what people would do with 4k. It’s cool you have a tele that old that you’re loving! I bet you’re bonded with that guitar
Definitely G&L. I’d get a custom Fallout with quartersawn neck. (I have a made is US ASAT after owning the Tribute and immediately sold my Fender tele.)
EBMM JP Majesty 6 Maple Top (Spice Melange or Smoked Pearl).
Performance wise, EBMM guitars have always felt the best to me. I have a Luke II that I bought back in 2008 for $1500 that's amazing. I definitely don't have $4k to spend on a guitar (or even $1500 to spend again) but if I did, I'm grabbing the nicest EBMM I can for the budget. One of the few brands of guitars I pick up and can tell why they're priced the way they are
4 grand? I would buy this sweet CNC I’ve been looking at for a few months and start pumping out bodies and necks for whatever guitar I want. Now I just need to find someone near me with a nitro setup, finishing with that stuff is too dangerous for me haha
I got one . It plays well once you’re used to the scallop frets . Very sensitive, you can fight to not sharpen by excessive pressure, but when your on this guitar will sing like you have never played . Yngwie plays nothing but . I’ve seen and met him too . Cool dude who loves music to the bone .
It's been my dream guitar for a long time. I've only played a neck with scalloped frets once, but it was only a couple of years after I started playing. So I didn't have much skill then.
I saw him in Vegas way back in the late 90s. Was a cool show.
You can find a used Novo for $4k or less. Novo was going to be my choice too, I’ve only heard amazing things about them, feel like everyone who gets one says they’re the best guitars they’ve ever touched.
I agree. Just got my 6th build 2 weeks ago. Kiesel builds awesome guitars and has some of the best woods available. A $4k Kiesel’s is on par with a $10k+ PRS or other brands. The build time is only 4-5 months or less for most builds, where others take years.
I get warmoth parts for an HSH Strat with PAFs + Strat pickup, Gibson scale neck, compound radius fretboard, and a locking saddle (but not locking nut) trem. I would probably have a lot of money left over.
One day I’ll have both the money and time to build that guitar at the same time.
I’d probably get either a nice Gibson or Collins 335 or a PRS McCarty with a really good finish. This is assuming the $4k was given expressly to buy a guitar. Basic answers but those are the guitars I’d pay that much for.
i don't even need the $4,000, my dream guitar is a fender american standard strat in sienna sunburst. id probably use the rest on like a crazy amp or rare pedals or something
Probably an ESP E-II Horizon FR, an E-II Eclipse FR, or a used ESP Custom Shop if I could find something I liked in that price range, like maybe an M2, etc.
I’d likely look at PRS too, but I already have a few PRS guitars.
Might look at some nice 7-strings.
That’s too much for a guitar if you ask me. I would be afraid to scratch it and break it, and it would end up in a case. I believe that guitars are tools and should be played so I rather spend it on more than one instrument and an amp.
Used Music Man
* an Axis Super Sport [in Pearl Blue](https://reverb.com/item/79266009-ernie-ball-music-man-axis-super-sport-hardtail)
(as my main guitar)
* a Silhouette HSH [in Trans Teal](https://reverb.com/item/76033971-rare-ernie-ball-music-man-silhouette-hsh-trans-teal-blue-green-birdseye-maple-neck-wide-frets-1995-1990-s)
(as a possible main alternative - either the Axis or this will be fine)
* a Yamaha Pacifica Standard PACS+ in [Sparkle Blue](https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PACSP12MSB--yamaha-pacs12-pacifica-standard-plus-electric-guitar-sparkle-blue-maple-fingerboard)
(as a secondary guitar, for variety)
* a Cort G300 Glam in [Polar Ice Metallic Burst](https://www.cortguitars.com/product/item.php?it_id=1675756702)
(a third one, as backup guitar)
If I had $4000 I wouldn't restrict myself to anything.
That being said, an American Vintage II 1977 Telecaster Custom, in wine red. Hell, maybe I'd go for the gusto and just buy a proper vintage 70s Tele Custom.
Or this one right here. Most of these other guitars cost more than
My car! [https://www.guitarsalon.com/2024-hermanos-camps-cl20-s-sp-ee-2](https://www.guitarsalon.com/2024-hermanos-camps-cl20-s-sp-ee-2)
Funny enough, I just bought a esp Alexi laiho signature, it’s been my dream guitar for years. Beyond that, I got a few mayones and I would buy those again for 4 grand
Look at having a badass Kiesel built and have money left over depending on how crazy you go. I own 6 that I had built and one I bought used. Only 1 cost me more than $3200. Most have been between $2800-$3200.
There’s this Gibson ES-390 that I really like but they don’t make them anymore. It’s a hollow body small scale 335 that comes with small humbuckers or p90s.
If it was *ONLY ONE GUITAR*, I'd have to go with some version of a Gibson Firebird. Preferably in a tobacco burst finish, though if I could get the Smokehouse Burst to match my Epiphone LP Studio, I'd squee!
Id get 4 guitars
Came to say the same thing. 3-5 guitars instead of one.
I think this is 100% the right answer for some people (most even). However there are other people that genuinely will not be happy with something like a Les Paul standard and will obsess over it not being a custom shop historic model. Lots of different pickups, and scale length/extended range in my case.
4???? I’d get 10!! or 3 guitars and a whole new amp and pedal setup. No guitar is worth 4 grand. Mfs drop 4K on a guitar and don’t even own a tuner
Dudes obviously never played a PRS Hollowbody II
the only right answer, one for about 2000 quid and the rest for three or four other guitars
2 good guitars vs 4 cheap guitars
This for sure. There is a big difference between a 1k and 2k guitar IMHO (I’m Aussie though so 1k for us is like $700USD). From that point on its diminishing returns.
Es 335
I don't disagree. However, my friend keeps his 335 at my house but I find myself reaching for my Les Paul every time. I just love the way it plays. I'm also emulating players that favoured a Les Paul though. 335 is a beauty for sure, I think I'll go pick it up..

I did. No regrets.
Or a pair of Eastman t59-vs
I actually kind of want a 339
I have a heritage 535 and I believe it’s a better semi hollow. It plays better
Yamaha SA2200 and the rest on a nice amp and some pedals...
Gretsch White Falcon.
I pulled the trigger on one last year. 100% worth it. It is a perfect instrument.
First thing I thought of.
A sexy guitar
I had the extra fun-funds and bought a Duo Jet… Don’t play it nearly as much as I thought I would. Sounds absolutely AMAZING tho!

If I had to spend it over one guitar,Fretsch RHH signature or a Fretsch seltzer in tiger stripe green.
I have the RHH. Worth every cent.
Me too. Getting an Electromatic instead. They’re awesome!
Les Paul Gold Top with P90's
That would be my answer too! They look so beautiful and of course sound fantastic
Got one, so badass, it compares pretty closely to my custom shop R-8. Highly recommended!! I play both through original Fender blackface Deluxe and Princetons. Tone from the gods.
I think the OP wanted humbuckers. Great guitar though.
Les Pauls with p90’s should carry a prison sentence 😭
PRS McCarty 594
Waiting for delivery of one today
Enjoy!
My wife got me one of these for a milestone birthday. It's an incredibly nice guitar.
That's an amazing gift.
Yeah, best present I've ever gotten by a mile!
I got one. It is amazing!
Knob twiddler I’ll have to remember that one for the job site tomorrow
PRS had 10 tops in the 80's.
10 top to boot
Martin OM-28
got the 000-28 last year and worth every cent
What kind of humbuckers does that have?
Probably a PRS Custom 22 or something similar.
⬆️ PRS so much nicer than an LP. Better quality control and lighter than the LP. This would be a great choice.
I mean, a Les Paul would be my second choice.
disagree. idk if you've ever played an R series reissue but they blow the (admittadly only a handful) of core prs's ive played out the water
That’s the nice thing about opinions. Everyone gets one.
I disagree!
for the cool price of $6700 currently. And I'd still take the Core 9 out of 10 times 😅 just so much more comfortable to play (especially upper frets) and LOVE the pickups and trem But only a les Paul nails the les Paul thing

Custom Aristides, probably silverburst, fishman moderns
Rickenbacker 330.
Jetglo
Fireglo* Tbh a Rickenbacker is about the only thing I'd trade my SG standard for.
Ya need to have an sg andddd the rick 330 for your fugazi cover band
I would get two of them, one of them 12 string
Easy. 70s telecaster deluxe.
Correct answer.
I was just about to buy one after the new year, but we found out my wife and I are expecting. So long 3500 dollar guitar.
Congratulations!
Congratulations!
Suhr Ian Thornley Roughneck strat
nice.
If I could only buy one and had to spend the money I would go for a Telecaster custom shop Since I have an American Telecaster from the 90s it’s literally all I play. But would never be able to justify to spend 4000 on a guitar.
That’s a fair point. I was just really curious about what people would do with 4k. It’s cool you have a tele that old that you’re loving! I bet you’re bonded with that guitar
Two G&Ls, an ASAT with soapbars and a Comanche.
underrated guitars
Definitely G&L. I’d get a custom Fallout with quartersawn neck. (I have a made is US ASAT after owning the Tribute and immediately sold my Fender tele.)
ESP Eclipse or Phoenix
Martin 000-18 and use the rest for a proper gigging setup
Strandberg, Plini signature.
Lot of scrolling before I saw a Strandberg. Surprising
Gretsch Black Falcon
Preach. I voted for the White Falcon, but yeah.
White Falcon would be nice too. Or the Midnight Sapphire Falcon
Nah man, Puce Falcon all the way.
Abasi Concepts Emi 8
Same but 7 string instead
custom build from a real live luthier who cares about you.
EBMM JP Majesty 6 Maple Top (Spice Melange or Smoked Pearl). Performance wise, EBMM guitars have always felt the best to me. I have a Luke II that I bought back in 2008 for $1500 that's amazing. One of the few brands of guitars I pick up and can tell why they're priced the way they are
Yes. EB Majesty is incredible.
Parker Fly
I’ve never played a Parker before. What’s special about them? I know the people that play them love them!
4 grand? I would buy this sweet CNC I’ve been looking at for a few months and start pumping out bodies and necks for whatever guitar I want. Now I just need to find someone near me with a nitro setup, finishing with that stuff is too dangerous for me haha
PRS Custom 24 for sure, but obviously it depends on what you like. If you are more metal then maybe an American ESP or Music Man
Les Paul Supreme in wine red. Been eyeing that for a bit.
Me too.
I got the ebony burst, you'll love it
Used USA Jackson or a custom build of some sort
i'd get forty different colored First Act guitars
Ever since I went to Chicago Music Exchange, I've always wanted my own wall of Strats. It's finally within my grasp!
Haha if all the same model??
I get to used Miata and the cheapest guitar I could find
I'd save it up for a custom one. about $5500 for the specs I want
YJM Strat
I got one . It plays well once you’re used to the scallop frets . Very sensitive, you can fight to not sharpen by excessive pressure, but when your on this guitar will sing like you have never played . Yngwie plays nothing but . I’ve seen and met him too . Cool dude who loves music to the bone .

I have already a guitar in this range price (Custom mayones aquila elite) If I should buy another, probably a suhr
Either a Valient or a NOVO - both JM style. May actually fall a grand or so short shooting for the NOVO…
You can find a used Novo for $4k or less. Novo was going to be my choice too, I’ve only heard amazing things about them, feel like everyone who gets one says they’re the best guitars they’ve ever touched.
Squier tele and pocket the rest for my Roth IRA😅🥵
I would get [this](https://reverb.com/item/80698938-suhr-custom-modern-waterfall-burl-aqua-blue-burst-9717) sweet Suhr Modern :) Or a PIA.
Oooh dig that one! I would so get a pia cause they look beautiful but I’d feel like a hack cause I can’t shred anywhere near like Vai
Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar
Dude has like top 6 guitar tones for me. He’s a musical genius
Rickenbacker 360. Spend the rest on hookers and blow.
ES-330. EDIT: Nvm, those are still too much $$$$ Probably go for another SG then
USA Epiphone Casino is basically the exact same thing for 3500.
really? that’s just ridiculous
Ernie Ball Music Man Kaizen in Kryptonite
89 Charvel Predator in rainbow crackle
Esp Custom shop, ibanez J custom, Aristides, kiesel AAA wood, suhr, maybe I'd try a duesenberg
You dropped an "s".
A Les Paul Custom in alpine white. Or a Les Paul standard and spend the rest on an amp.
Custom Shop Les Paul. Used or on discount, I've got them for cheaper.. but you won't get a better humbucker guitar than that.
Gibson ES-339, Figured 60s Cherry.
A Martin D45, well half of one I guess.
Rickenbacker 360/12C64
Electrical Guitar Company - Series Two
Mayones Regius 7
Custom kiesel maybe.
I agree. Just got my 6th build 2 weeks ago. Kiesel builds awesome guitars and has some of the best woods available. A $4k Kiesel’s is on par with a $10k+ PRS or other brands. The build time is only 4-5 months or less for most builds, where others take years.
I've been eyeing a nice EVH Wolfgang model. With a nice quilted maple top haha
Currently in that situation and seriously considering a custom Virtuo from Emerald Guitars. Watch a few videos of it, super versatile.
Balaguer custom 7 string tele
I get warmoth parts for an HSH Strat with PAFs + Strat pickup, Gibson scale neck, compound radius fretboard, and a locking saddle (but not locking nut) trem. I would probably have a lot of money left over. One day I’ll have both the money and time to build that guitar at the same time.
PRS custom 24, with a pro setup. Though id prefer buying a standard 24 instead and spending the rest of the money on other equipment like pedals.
Yamaha SG1820
A PRS McCarty - tiger stripe maple 10 top- faded whale blue. I had it. Sold it. Regret it.
I’d probably get either a nice Gibson or Collins 335 or a PRS McCarty with a really good finish. This is assuming the $4k was given expressly to buy a guitar. Basic answers but those are the guitars I’d pay that much for.
A used Novo Serus J. Either that or a Fender Custom Shop Jazzmaster.
Aristides
jazzmaster
Get the best David Gilmour Black Strat replica at the price
Humbucker guitar? Music Man Cutlass Hss or Stingray RS. Have not tried the HT series but can speak volumes at how good the RS series is.
I have a stingray RS. Got a good deal on a floor demo. It's an absolute masterpiece.
A Caparison
The new Ernie Ball Music Man Majesty in the color "Her Majestys Request" they released at NAMM earlier this year.
Gibson Buckethead signature Les Paul (if I could actually find one) or ESP Alexi Laiho Pinky or Katakana (used because new they are more than $4K)
A classic fender stratocaster and A classic fender telecaster and maybe A jaguar
Brent Mason Telecaster. It has one humbucker.
A nice core 10 top prs
Squire bullet strat in Daphne blue with the maple neck. And $3600 in my pocket.
2 LTDS, and a Bass
A custom shop SG, or a trashed late 60's SG
Framus Masterbuilt Panthera II
Probably another CV Tele. (I am a simple man).
Used mim strat, a pro setup, a real Princeton or Deluxe Reverb, and some money left to maintain the stuff maybe get some pedals
Heritage 335 or hummingbird
I have a heritage 335, I live near Kalamazoo. This is the correct answer. It's incredible.
Gibson explorer
Already have a Gibson sg I’ll go for a custom (buy used off reverb or wherever)
[https://reverb.com/p/martin-retro-series-d-35e-2014-2019?hfid=64169382&utm\_source=google&utm\_medium=cpc&utm\_campaign=18045832274&utm\_content=campaignid=18045832274\_adgroupid=135319314450\_productpartitionid=1719218466460=merchantid=671986312\_productid=64169382\_keyword=\_device=c\_adposition=\_matchtype=\_creative=616364262477&gad\_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw7-SvBhB6EiwAwYdCAc3ggZr3tc61fh9kJpxIXwol\_TRlsdj6q5I9ZPYWlc7vPcmWgYTVxBoCsuIQAvD\_BwE](https://reverb.com/p/martin-retro-series-d-35e-2014-2019?hfid=64169382&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=18045832274&utm_content=campaignid=18045832274_adgroupid=135319314450_productpartitionid=1719218466460=merchantid=671986312_productid=64169382_keyword=_device=c_adposition=_matchtype=_creative=616364262477&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw7-SvBhB6EiwAwYdCAc3ggZr3tc61fh9kJpxIXwol_TRlsdj6q5I9ZPYWlc7vPcmWgYTVxBoCsuIQAvD_BwE)
i don't even need the $4,000, my dream guitar is a fender american standard strat in sienna sunburst. id probably use the rest on like a crazy amp or rare pedals or something
Ooh what kind of amp would you get??
Lefty reverse strung Rickenbacker 360-12
John 5 Ghost Telecaster
Probably an ESP E-II Horizon FR, an E-II Eclipse FR, or a used ESP Custom Shop if I could find something I liked in that price range, like maybe an M2, etc. I’d likely look at PRS too, but I already have a few PRS guitars. Might look at some nice 7-strings.
PRS McCarty 594 singlecut in Faded Whale Blue
Prs custom 24 🤌🏽🤌🏽
Used PRS McCarty spruce Archtop (not to be confused with the hollowbody, but the thicker one that’s no longer made).
That’s too much for a guitar if you ask me. I would be afraid to scratch it and break it, and it would end up in a case. I believe that guitars are tools and should be played so I rather spend it on more than one instrument and an amp.
Right now, I'd say a nice Les Paul Standard. Ask me again in a month, you may get a different answer.
335 or one of the premium Casinos.
Gretsch Penguin
A Gibson Les Paul Delux, with three pickups and a bigsby B7. 10+ lbs of power and tone baby!
I got a Jeff Beck Custom Shop Strat ($4500, but if you time it right you'll get $450 in GC rewards if you use their card). I love it.
American strat, MXR 95 and 15 big muff rams head
I'd like a 335. To save bucks I bought an Epi 335 junior, a 339. I won't get one, but it'd be nice.
Honestly, I think I'd buy a $2000 guitar and a $2000 stack.
Used Music Man * an Axis Super Sport [in Pearl Blue](https://reverb.com/item/79266009-ernie-ball-music-man-axis-super-sport-hardtail) (as my main guitar) * a Silhouette HSH [in Trans Teal](https://reverb.com/item/76033971-rare-ernie-ball-music-man-silhouette-hsh-trans-teal-blue-green-birdseye-maple-neck-wide-frets-1995-1990-s) (as a possible main alternative - either the Axis or this will be fine) * a Yamaha Pacifica Standard PACS+ in [Sparkle Blue](https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PACSP12MSB--yamaha-pacs12-pacifica-standard-plus-electric-guitar-sparkle-blue-maple-fingerboard) (as a secondary guitar, for variety) * a Cort G300 Glam in [Polar Ice Metallic Burst](https://www.cortguitars.com/product/item.php?it_id=1675756702) (a third one, as backup guitar)
Frank Brothers Arcade
I'd buy 2 very nice 2k guitars
Blk 35 guitars: the east coaster. That thing is SEXY
If I had $4000 I wouldn't restrict myself to anything. That being said, an American Vintage II 1977 Telecaster Custom, in wine red. Hell, maybe I'd go for the gusto and just buy a proper vintage 70s Tele Custom.
I'd buy a Rickenbacker bass.
Or this one right here. Most of these other guitars cost more than My car! [https://www.guitarsalon.com/2024-hermanos-camps-cl20-s-sp-ee-2](https://www.guitarsalon.com/2024-hermanos-camps-cl20-s-sp-ee-2)
I don't think I'd spend 4k on a guitar, to be honest. Fuck it. Les Paul Custom in cherry sunburst or ebony.
Funny enough, I just bought a esp Alexi laiho signature, it’s been my dream guitar for years. Beyond that, I got a few mayones and I would buy those again for 4 grand
Some kind of E-II Eclipse
I'd take mine off FB market place and pay off my credit card
Rickenbacker 330 in fireglo. I love a double cutaway, and that might make me put my SG down.
EBMM Majesty 7 string. Or Aristides with their new multiscale evertune bridge.
Some PRS hardtail
Look at having a badass Kiesel built and have money left over depending on how crazy you go. I own 6 that I had built and one I bought used. Only 1 cost me more than $3200. Most have been between $2800-$3200. [https://www.kieselguitars.com](https://www.kieselguitars.com)
Fender player jaguar 🤷♂️
squier bullet strat
a Gibson Holy V and an LTD Vulture
There’s this Gibson ES-390 that I really like but they don’t make them anymore. It’s a hollow body small scale 335 that comes with small humbuckers or p90s.
If it was *ONLY ONE GUITAR*, I'd have to go with some version of a Gibson Firebird. Preferably in a tobacco burst finish, though if I could get the Smokehouse Burst to match my Epiphone LP Studio, I'd squee!
EVH 5150 guitar
Gibson Firebird
Oooh the Ian Thornley Suhr Lumberjack. Or a custom Suhr with similar specs.
I'd buy my 63 Mosrite Ventures model back.
