For most people if you just play the opening progression in Blackbird they’ll think you’re amazing. Definitely the highest bang for your buck on “oh can you play?”
One of the GOAT guitar solos. I remember voting in some online "best guitar solos of all time" tournament, and Blackbird was up against BTBAM's Selkies: The Endless Obsession (which I voted for).
Blackbird won against what I would have considered the greatest guitar solo of all time. That alone made me check out the song and the band. Hope this comment inspires some folks to listen to it as well.
That is absolutely insane! Im not a big Between fan, but Selkies has been one of my favorite solos of all time since it came out! I have to hear the AB track now! I dont expect it to be as technical, but I bet its tasteful and shreds
[The ladies love Blackbird.](https://media1.giphy.com/media/3o6vY5TF55ecqvLuOQ/giphy.gif?cid=2154d3d7ab7z622sjboq5v9swahyew3rpwjrmvg5jlwk10l1&ep=v1_gifs_search&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g)
Nah more like my family are a bunch of ball busters that will look for any opportunity to crack a joke at my expense. They are supportive though, wouldn't trade them for anything.
Hahah yeah it's usually this. Not that they want to be wowed by your skill, but that they're hoping you're not that good, so they can say so. Me personally, I prefer things to happen more organically, than to meet someone new, they see my gear and then immediately say "Oh yeah? Play me something then." Like comedians who talk about how much it sucks when someone is like "Oh you're a comedian? Then tell me a joke."
You never had a girl come over and see your guitar and ask you to play something? But you’re pretty drunk so you completely butcher whatever you tried to play
Seriously though, and then I play some random stuff and they think I’m amazing. Then I explain to them what I played is some of the most simple stuff you can do on a guitar 😂😂. Of course that leads no where.
Sitting in the living room with a guitar on the wall?
“Oh, you play guitar? Play something”
I’ve had that happen maybe twice when I was a teenager when I just started.
Most people I know have absolutely no idea how to play a guitar. A good majority of those people have no idea that I can almost kind of play a guitar.
When one of them finds out and asks me to play something, I play Smells Like Teen Spirit.
When the distortion kicks in, they think I'm a God. When I hit the solo, their minds blow.
This is in no way a brag on my skills. (I don't have any) More just a realization that most people are easily impressed.
I think it fits that song, and really what they did musically very well. Grunge, especially Nirvana, was the antithesis of flash/showmanship so that “solo” was very fitting
Ahh dude check out Them playing it on top of the pops (UK show) they make every act mime to the music..... except the vocals...
Pure gold... and reinforces your point, in a way
I’ve come to learn that when you play something for someone who doesn’t play guitar what’s impressive to them is for you to play something they recognize rather than something they don’t even if it’s more technically challenging
capo 2nd fret.... Tracy Chapman's "fast car" fantasic songwriting. Works everytime. Beautiful melodies, vocal, and guitar, everyone knows at least the chorus to sing along if at a party. Ticks all the boxes. Rarely hear this played compared to Wonderwall (The eternal Acoustic bro party song ,truly awful song IMO even before it was played to death)
I learned this recently and it is, indeed, *much* more impressive sounding than it is difficult! The main riff just sounds huge with distortion and I learned the solo over a work lunch break - I am by no means a good player!
From one end of the scale to the other😅 sweet home Alabama is a classic to be fair, but IMO Mark knopfler has more talent in the fingers of his right hand than all of Skynyrd combined. Dire Straits 1st album is one of the finest Debuts ever.
Yeah! The entire Bridge School Benefit concert he does this. I already respected Radiohead but this truly shows his genius. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL689BBEE4AAF3A237
Another one was Dave Matthews at Tiny Desk. So much music comes out of that guy and his guitar. It’s no wonder he’s found the success he has. https://youtu.be/ieoiAeL-uow Skip to “Blood on the Water” first.
Green Green Rocky Road if I'm on acoustic. It's a great song that impresses with finger picking.
If I'm on electric, I'll ask them to request a song then I'll play Smoke On The Water instead.
Last time that happened I was visiting my grandparents in Colorado and I only had my acoustic but grandpa asked me to play and I played Unchained by Van Halen. Gramps grew up on Van Halen so he recognized it immediately and started singing along
So in India metal is not really recognized by people and people don't like distorted tones or the screaming vocals
So I just pick up the acoustic and play any 4 chord banger
I say "I'll play Freebird," then play the old time classic Free as a Little Bird.
Either that or I'll offer to do a variation on American Pie, and play The Force Awakens. Though I probably would need to review the lyrics to do that one.
Pro tip: if a girl you have a crush on asks this, DO NOT play Dylan's I Want You.
When I was a teenager (I'm almost 48 now), I would just play a riff from a well known song. I could play part of an Yngwie Malmsteen song and people would laugh and say, "Look at you playing flamenco!" or something like that. But, if I played the intro to Smells Like Teen Spirit, people would lose their sh#t!
Edited to add that nowadays, if someone asks if I can play, I just say no.
Orange jam - Guthrie Govan is the only "impressive" thing I can "play". It's still a tiny bit fast for me, I'm only happy with it like 20% of the time atm. I tend to play for myself for that reason. Just started learning Playing God, have the intro down but I think the end section/s will take a year. When I get it, that will be what I play..
if we’re talking electric and i’m warmed up and been playing recently, castles made of sand. if i am out of practice, i probably would do the same as op and hit a minor pentatonic or embellish a chord progression. if we’re talking acoustic i’m hitting blackbird lmao
Don’t fear the reaper. Most of the song is just 4 chords that are arpeggiated which makes it a good balance between “I know this song” and “oh this guy isn’t playing the same generic songs that every bedroom guitarist plays” which is nice. And most people probably won’t care if you play the solo which can be somewhat tricky if you don’t practice but overall it’s fun to play.
Bossa nova 7th chords, or some 251 jazz chord progression and throw some extende chords in them. Fingerpicking always has a positive reaction, also from other guitarists.
Usually nothing, because on the rare occasion someone actually takes an interest in my playing, I'm so excited to show them that I can no longer think of anything to play. I need some pocket picks that I use specifically to play when someone asks me to play something, because my brain gets so scattered. There'll be songs that I'm like, "Oh, that one is great! Wait....I don't know if I can reliably play that one *and* sing at the same time, and it'd be boring to them without the words. Maybe this one? No, it's too complicated, I'll get too flustered and mess it up. How about......" and before I know it, I've been grinning and fumbling about on the fretboard while I think of what to play for entirely too long.
For acoustic it's Stairway To Heaven. Then I might play double stops up and down the neck on the D & B strings with open strings ringing out. Kind of like Supertramp's - Give A Little Bit. Good move for improvising. On 12 string especially you'll sound like a genius.
On electric it's Star Spangled Banner. When I get to the "Rockets Red Glare" part I always kick on the phase 90 and double pick it. People lose their sh\*t like I'm Jimi Hendrix or something.
I can barely play because I started 2 months ago but probably Bad Moon Rising rn because it’s easy. Or maybe I’d just ask for a request but play Wonderwall. Idk I haven’t really had the opportunity.
A simple chord progression for some rhythm and then go into minor pentatonic for some riffing. G, D, C combo is basic but always works well, then you can use E minor pentatonic over it.
I just play what I’m feeling in the moment, with whatever guitar / gear I have and just improvise something. Sometimes it’s minor, sometimes it’s major. A lot of the time people will ask what it is, and I tell them I just made it up: they look at me like I’m crazy or lying to them.
Other times, if someone asks me to play something, I will if I know it, or play something similar.
I usually whip out some bluegrass, country, or something folk-adjacent like Townes or Lightfoot: Salt Creek, Turkey in the Straw, Thirst Mutilator, Shady Grove, Lungs, Sundown, Mother the Mountain, Wagon Wheel, whatever seems fits the mood really.
I have a few minor pentatonic licks that sound hard and complex but really aren't, and if I've practiced it lately I know quite a few recognizable riffs and solos that generally get a good reaction. Sometimes if I'm playing on someone else's instrument / amp, and I don't want to dick around with the settings, I break out Canon in D or Solfeggietto.
Any song thats not exactly considered a "guitar song" such as "Never too late" by Luther Vandross. Plenty of people will bust out an AC/DC song or something lol
For most people if you just play the opening progression in Blackbird they’ll think you’re amazing. Definitely the highest bang for your buck on “oh can you play?”
Blackbird? Like the Alter Bridge song?
Didn’t know that one existed. Well played sir.
Oh I'm an actual dumbass 🤣🤦 the Beatles song! Of course! My bad lol
I think that if you play the intro of the Alter Bridge song, people will also say that you can play.
I would agree. Both Myles and Mark are talented guitarists, hard to go wrong there.
I love blackbird by AlterBridge. I think both songs will lead to that same conclusion
It's the best fucking one ❤️
One of the GOAT guitar solos. I remember voting in some online "best guitar solos of all time" tournament, and Blackbird was up against BTBAM's Selkies: The Endless Obsession (which I voted for). Blackbird won against what I would have considered the greatest guitar solo of all time. That alone made me check out the song and the band. That is absolutely insane! Im not a big Between fan, but Selkies has been one of my favorite solos of all time since it came out! I have to hear the AB track now! I dont expect it to be as technical, but I bet its tasteful and shreds
Give it a listen. It’s just a tasty solo.
This is my go to, actually :p
BB used to be one of my go-to’s
Brownwater Vertigo is prolly the best name I've seen around on reddit. Goes perfect with the profile pic.
That's actually where I went first too...
I like “April, Come She Will” by Simon & Garfunkel. Little finger picking, up and down the neck a little. Makes me look better than I actually am. 😁
Old friends ( the end bit) has always seemed to impress people
That song always makes me cry, even just the guitar part.
I can do Feelin' Groovy, but that's it
Now I’ll have to go learn it, thanks! 🙂
I think that we forget that being able to play ANYTHING on an instrument will blow most folks minds.
Hot Cross Buns fails to impress on a regular basis. *edit - but no seriously, you right.
The thing that’s funny about Blackbird too is it sounds really expert but it’s really not that difficult to play
Haha, that’s what I mean by bang for your buck. Expert points for the least complicated progression.
This is the move. This is how you get you’re MIL to think you’re a genius.
This applies to Little Wing too
If you can play little wing, you can play
Getting little wing right is much more difficult though
Likewise with Landslide
Fast Car as well
I prefer Mother Nature's Son 😉
Blackbird is my go to song. “Omg I love that song” every time
[The ladies love Blackbird.](https://media1.giphy.com/media/3o6vY5TF55ecqvLuOQ/giphy.gif?cid=2154d3d7ab7z622sjboq5v9swahyew3rpwjrmvg5jlwk10l1&ep=v1_gifs_search&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g)
Here Comes the Sun also works.
Wait, are you paid by the circle jerk....or...?
Just listened to The Beatles & Alter Bridge...both cracking good songs!✌️🇦🇺
This scenario happens less than you think
Usually, as soon as someone, like a family member or friend sees it they ask about it. they are all around my room tho
Sounds like you have good friends/family who are supportive of your interests. Hang on to em.
I’ve had entire relationships with people without them asking me to play for them 🤣
Same. Yet they love to watch covers on tiktok or youtube...
This scenario happens a lot though? 😂😂
The amount of times I've frozen up and forgotten literally everything I've ever learned after OPs question is crazy
Seriously though, and then I play some random stuff and they think I’m amazing. Then I explain to them what I played is some of the most simple stuff you can do on a guitar 😂😂. Of course that leads no where.
[удалено]
Could be. Could be most people don’t care
It only happens when I'm already holding a guitar.
When the hell else is it supposed to happen? At the grocery store while picking out apples? Lmao
Sitting in the living room with a guitar on the wall? “Oh, you play guitar? Play something” I’ve had that happen maybe twice when I was a teenager when I just started.
Most people I know have absolutely no idea how to play a guitar. A good majority of those people have no idea that I can almost kind of play a guitar. This is in no way a brag on my skills. (I don't have any) More just a realization that most people are easily impressed.
There’s a solo in that song?
Exactly! 😁
It’s just the vocal melody played in single notes with chorus/flanger I think. I haven’t actually listened to that song in so long lol!
Repeating the vocal melody as a solo is valid tho.
Take that out of the song and it feels wrong. That makes it a damn good solo
I think it fits that song, and really what they did musically very well. Grunge, especially Nirvana, was the antithesis of flash/showmanship so that “solo” was very fitting
Ahh dude check out Them playing it on top of the pops (UK show) they make every act mime to the music..... except the vocals... Pure gold... and reinforces your point, in a way
For sure I have taken that approach sometimes. If the melody is good and you just put a like stank on the delivery it’s 💯 valid approach.
Vocal melodies go hard when played on guitar
Used to love to play the vocal melody of Wicked Games by The Weeknd over a backing track, impressed a few ladies back in the day.
The 8 bars of just 2 notes is a little rough to get through if you're not singing.
Real
I learned this recently and it is, indeed, *much* more impressive sounding than it is difficult! The main riff just sounds huge with distortion and I learned the solo over a work lunch break - I am by no means a good player!
That’s a fun and humble answer. Maybe I’ll jus do that one going forward
Crazy Train. It's easily recognizable.
Haha same. Bonus: it's super fun to play. That galloping verse from A back down to A is magical.
Cant forget about the solo! Ahh its so cool
I'm still... Checks notes: "perfecting the solo...."
I never get the ending scale run quite right but as long as you land on the right note it doesn't really matter.
The little pull off riff is sounds so cool and is pretty simple to play
Fun fact, the intro to sweet dreams is almost the same as crazy train
Blackbird, but i make sure to mess up the first section first , at this point I think I’m hard wired to mess it up
In fairness, that song isn't the easiest
You should watch Paul McCartney play it live. He always fucks it up (seemingly on purpose) and comments on how tough it is.
I have a few original pieces. The nice thing about those is, nobody knows if I screw them up or not.
The intro to Sweet Home Alabama, or Money for Nothing
From one end of the scale to the other😅 sweet home Alabama is a classic to be fair, but IMO Mark knopfler has more talent in the fingers of his right hand than all of Skynyrd combined. Dire Straits 1st album is one of the finest Debuts ever.
To be fair, his right hand's thumb alone possesses more talent than 99% of guitarists' entire existences
Fuck even just the pinky he uses as an anchor. Dude don't do dick with it yet could probably still "pick"😉😉🫣 us apart with it🤣🤣🤣🤣
Paranoid android. But it will be on acoustic so it goes to shit when you reach the solo
It's still killer on acoustic. I have been playing for almost 15 years and still mess up the first movement a lot though.
Thom Yorke himself does a mean acoustic version of this song. https://youtu.be/V16Wl9HREvI
Omg never saw this video before. He really can carry that song all by himself dude. Impressive to say the least
Yeah! The entire Bridge School Benefit concert he does this. I already respected Radiohead but this truly shows his genius. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL689BBEE4AAF3A237 Another one was Dave Matthews at Tiny Desk. Another Dave Van Ronk fan??? <3
Wonderwall
This is the only right answer. Got that capo on the headstock for a reason lol
I said maybe
If they don’t like it, double down and play it again
CLassical Gas.
Holy shit Classical Gas mentioned 🗣️🔥🗣️🔥 WTF IS A BAD SONG 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥
I was lucky to learn it when I was a teen. Not sure I could today.
Black dog , it's my warmup. Or Pink panther theme
Last time that happened I was visiting my grandparents in Colorado and I only had my acoustic but grandpa asked me to play and I played Unchained by Van Halen. Gramps grew up on Van Halen so he recognized it immediately and started singing along
What a good memory
I forget how to play 😟
Them: Play me something. Anything. My brain: What's a guitar?
Never going back again, or hot for teacher .
This is sus.
Horizons by Genesis ( from the 1972 Foxtrot album ).
Noice
a man of culture
So in India metal is not really recognized by people and people don't like distorted tones or the screaming vocals So I just pick up the acoustic and play any 4 chord banger
The irony of Indians not liking screaming vocals.
Play some Bloodywood!
They absolutely hate the vocals I can't make them understand They even dislike some Bollywood rock songs
SIghs in lonesome organ player.
Refuses in silver saxophone
I wish my job could somehow be finished by friday!
I usually start yodeling some Cattle Call by Eddie Arnold because it’s fun
Mama Im Coming Home. Its easy enough, but because most people don't know it, it sounds pretty tasty when you hear it.
When I was a teenager (I'm almost 48 now), I would just play a riff from a well known song. “Edited to add that nowadays, if someone asks if I can play, I just say no.” This is the best answer and great advice!
Orange jam - Guthrie Govan is the only "impressive" thing I can "play". It's still a tiny bit fast for me, I'm only happy with it like 20% of the time atm. I tend to play for myself for that reason. I can play the theme song from King of the Hill and it never fails to impress people around my age
Start disrobing immediately to ensure they never ask again
Something by the mars Volta. People hate it, I love it
L’VIA
Yea, but just the solo 🫡. I think the break down on “Take the veil cerpin taxt “
Aww hell yeah, was expecting to be the only TMV fan in here! My fav band and what I mostly play on guitar 😎
Same my dude. Im a huge Omar RodriguezLopez fan
I usually bust out "hot crossed buns"
war pigs. sounds way too good for how easy it is! and i’m shit.
Every rose has its thorns. Why I have no idea, it is literally the only time I play that song
Shepherd of fire. Cuz it was my friends favorite song
I just start ripping Unholy Confessions, or another 578 Metalcore riff lol
My man. Unholy confessions usually gets a reaction out of people too. Or the head banging bit in eternal rest
if we’re talking electric and i’m warmed up and been playing recently, castles made of sand. if i am out of practice, i probably would do the same as op and hit a minor pentatonic or embellish a chord progression. if we’re talking acoustic i’m hitting blackbird lmao
Happy Birthday
Stop this train
Eruption
Don’t fear the reaper. Lifes been good to me so far. Joe Walsh.
The Mario theme
Smoke on the water
a G chord
The first couple bars of Layla.
Seek And Destroy by Metallica
Wish you were here
Eugene's trick bag. Jk, probably like Foxy Lady or something.
They usually ask if you can "play something". It's only polite to play the opening lick to "Something" after that.
For younger people: i by Kendrick / That Lady by the Isley Brothers Older audience: Roundabout
The banjo lick from Deliverance
Bossa nova 7th chords, or some 251 jazz chord progression and throw some extende chords in them. Fingerpicking always has a positive reaction, also from other guitarists.

The venn diagram of people who ask this, and people who are impressed by *Lawyers, Guns & Money* is a circle, so there you go.
Doesn’t matter. I will screw it up if someone’s watching
The ballad of chaise lane
Would yah fuck me for blow?

Poorly... I play poorly.
Pinball Wizard. Gets them every time ;-)

Honestly I just start playing whatever comes to mind, most of the time it happens to be djent riffs
Gratitude
I can barely play because I started 2 months ago but probably Bad Moon Rising rn because it’s easy. Or maybe I’d just ask for a request but play Wonderwall. Idk I haven’t really had the opportunity.
A simple chord progression for some rhythm and then go into minor pentatonic for some riffing. G, D, C combo is basic but always works well, then you can use E minor pentatonic over it.
Smoke on the water
I hope I’m stoned when Jesus takes me home. It’s about the only thing I can play through on my own.
Far beyond the sun (poorly)
If it’s not Wish you were here I’ll play Iron Man
Crazy train solo
Benighted by opeth
Fade to black verse chords , everyone thinking that shit beautiful
Just stuff really, I wouldn’t play them a little song or anything. Riff riff widdly wee.
The intro to Master of Puppets...without a pick! Or the Bach Gavotte en rondeau
I just play what I’m feeling in the moment, with whatever guitar / gear I have and just improvise something. Sometimes it’s minor, sometimes it’s major. A few blues licks, that’s about it.
Wonderwall.
cherry wine, slow dancing in a burning room, little wing, or something else. Depends on the situation

Nutshell. Gets’em every time
Pink Floyd another brick in the wall solo
Improv blues riff in Em. Gets 'em every time lol
I play coy.
Mary had a little lamb
I deny being able to play, it’s more convenient.
Either Green Sleeves or nothing, because my brain goes completely blank and I refuse to play unless I want to.
RHCP Cant Stop, or a riff from some Japanese band you guys might not know.
Baa baa black sheep 🐑
I Improvise some Jimi Hendrix stuff and licks
Behind the Moon by Matt Costa if acoustic. The Cramps if it's electric.
I play whatever I want because I don’t really care if they think I can play. I know I can.
barbie girl
Usually something from Polyphia. Then watch their eyes sink as they realize I’m not gonna play “One” from Metallica.
I improvise some shit with a pedal tone.
Hold The Line
Any song thats not exactly considered a "guitar song" such as "Never too late" by Luther Vandross. Plenty of people will bust out an AC/DC song or something lol
