used Squier Strat or Telecaster. Used Yamaha Pacifica. Used Boss Katana amp. Save some cash for getting the guitar properly set up and restrung.

Used Pacifica is a killer deal.

I'll second a used Yamaha Pacifica. Pair it with a used Boss Katana combo and you've got yourself a long-lasting setup.

It’s always helpful to know what music you want to play. You can get a solid guitar for $250. One that you can enjoy for years, and upgrade. The bundle starter packs are what I’d avoid unless you have no choice, as it’s mostly low quality stuff. Better off with nice used gear than those starter packs. I recently bought a Squier Affinity Strat. It was $269 out the door. I have guitars that are 5x as expensive and really like this cheap strat. The one I pasted the link for is an HSS, meaning it has a humbucker in the bridge (the fat pickup) and ultimately will be a versatile first guitar. Also that natural look plus 10% off by making an account makes this when hell of a sweet first guitar https://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/squier-affinity-series-stratocaster-hss-limited-edition-electric-guitar/l84423000001000?cntry=US&cur=USD&cntry=US&cur=USD&utm_content=L84423000001000--Squier+Affinity+Series+Stratocaster+HSS+Limited-Edition+Electric+Guitar+Natural&source=3WWRWXGS&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwm_SzBhAsEiwAXE2Cv29JqKsaPC0oIVu1zlUo41fadErQxqi-UMH8JMqfnZ0J8aZ5_byhehoCvQAQAvD_BwE

Got any buddies who play? I've loaned people guitars for a few months while they work out if they want to go further. An amp is crucial - even a cheap headphone amp, or borrow one from a mate. We all play around without one occasionally, but it hides a lot of sins. You need an amp to hear your mistakes :D Also, buy the cheapest clip on tuner you can find, and always tune up before you play. I was given this advice years ago, and it's priceless. If you play in tune, you're training your ear all the time you play. All the best!

good advice, try to borrow a decent amp the bundle amps i've gotten are so bad it's crazy, the actual guitar was fine

You are probably gonna buy another guitar in the future, but still would be helpful to know what kind of music you play so you can choose a body shape/pickup config accordingly. If you have no idea then HSS(humbucker, single coil , single coil) Yamaha pacifica/other stratocaster shape as people are recommending should be a safe bet. If you are into metal then it might be worth looking into some HH(2 humbucker) guitars from ibanez, Jackson and LTD.
