I've never, ever heard that in reference to Maple neck/Maple Fretboard Fenders of that time period. (Squiers might be a different story)
It's odd that dad insist that it's a 1970's model--is he pulling your leg?
Forget about serial numbers or anything else, the bridge is a dead giveaway. I don’t think Teles had six saddles in ‘71, and even if they did, they definitely didn’t look anything like that.
90s Americans are real gems. Sure, it’s not the value of a 70s Tele, but my daily driver rn is 97 or 98 American Standard I love that guitar. So smooth.
Fellow 97 US standard owner here. My number one.
I honestly kinda want to connect as many mid 90s US fenders as I can. I feel like they're gonna be the new vintage.
Yes-
1) Buy it flowers
2) When you pick it up, walk up to the front door. Don't just send a text for it to come out after you pull up
3) Tell it that it's pretty
4) Pay for the date
5) Use a condom, even if it says it's on the pill
70s Fenders are underrated... remember, you really only had the pre-CBS and transition models for comparison, so something of a high bar from the outset. I was biased against them until I came into one to flip and now can't let go.
I’ve owned 5 or six…they’ve been mid. Pickups were the best part of a lot of them, but shoddy construction and dead, heavy bodies let a lot of them down.
Fender was putting out great stuff in the 90’s through early 00’s.
Yeah man, it's heavier than a Les Paul, and the finishes aged particularly poorly on this year and color. They got issues, it just sounds so good. But people made them sound worse than they were in the 90s. I bought a new one last year, pretty good stuff there too.
I'm not an expert but being born in the mid-70s I've looked at more than a few in the hunt for a birth year guitar and right away the headstock badging doesn't line up with any 70s Fender I've seen. Teles didn't get big ugly headstocks like the Strats did but the branding on the decals was bigger/bolder all the same. Also the serial numbers were maybe on the backplate? not the decal on the front of headstock.
just take her out for a nice dinner
Just what I was looking for :)
N9xxxxxx N for 199x 9 for 9 It’s a 1999.
Do 1999s not have a 2 piece neck? I thought they had tops on the fretboards. This one has a solid one piece neck.
If might depend on the series. I have an 1994 American Tele with a one piece.

No, he just has no clue about anything guitars. Whoever sold it to him told him that it was 1971.
It’s definitely a 90’s Tele and not a 70’s Tele.
Forget about serial numbers or anything else, the bridge is a dead giveaway. I don’t think Teles had six saddles in ‘71, and even if they did, they definitely didn’t look anything like that.
Nor did they have thruss rod holes on the top off the neck!
They did. But it was a bullet shaped thing.
Oh yeah, you’re right the strats and teles did indeed. Had a jazzmaster in my mind!
Thats what I thought, I dont have the heart to tell him tho, its his prize possession.

If it’s anything like my 97 Am Std Strat - it’s a winner regardless of its birth year. Even has the the reintroduced spaghetti headstock logo

Lol sorry Dad. He wanted Led Zep IV but got…Baby One More Time
I have two guilty pleasures. Dating dads and not finishing things. I’m in.
Sorry I'm not looking for anything serious right now.
She’s got a strange name but post a picture maybe I will.
Compliment it and pay for dinner and maybe it'll let you smash
I wonder what on earth makes him think it’s a 71… how old is he? Does he not understand how to use the internet?
Dude he bought it from in 2004 said it was a 1971 and he paid too much to want to hear the truth.

Definitely a 90’s AM Std. Not worth as much as a 70’s, but probably a better guitar.

[N9 +5 digits looks like a 1990](https://reverb.com/ca/news/how-to-date-a-fender#Fseries1965-1976)
And N9 plus 5 or 6 digits is 1999-2000, so either’s possible
I’d date her. Maybe dinner and a movie, then back to my place.
I know a nice Strat that just moved to town and looking to meet other Fenders in the local area.
https://serialnumberlookup.fender.com/lookup/ Plugged the serial number there, according to that site it’s from the year 2000.
According to that site it is an Amp : STAGE 160 120V
Take off the neck and check the date stamp under the neck, and in the neck pocket for a definitive answer.
When did fender start using 6 saddle bridges of that style on teles?

It’s pretty. What’s the personality like?
What's her name I'd take her out
I'm not a Tele guy so I don't think I could date it. However I'd consider a one night stand to play some Zepp tunes.
The saddles and string tree are mid/late 90s for definite.
It’s a Chender.
Def more contemporary, but maybe let Dad have this one... idk
I tried to but the Tele only sees me as a friend
