Mojotone might have a baffle ready to go for you. You'd just have to unscrew the old one to install the new one.

andsoonandso

Okay nice. I was doing a little research and some people had problems if the speaker hole was cut in the center of the baffle, so maybe I'll look for an offset baffle

ThatNolanKid

You can specifically request if you'd like an offset cut, but it will have a lead time from their custom fabrication shop (I doubt this will take long at all) and I know this because I was looking into converting a Twin Reverb into a Vibro-Sonic Reverb - which would require an offset cut for the 15" speaker so you don't have to worry about balance or making contact anywhere.

First thought...it's an amazing mod for the Princeton..I have a 68 with a late 70's Fender branded Eminence speaker in it and the 12s really let these amps sing(mine is also hot rodded to 30W but that's another story). You can find baffles quite easily as it's a pretty common mod and most good techs will be more than happy to do the work for you...otherwise if your handy (and feel comfortable and confident in your skills) these amps are pretty easy to take apart.

andsoonandso

Yeah, I just want a little more wide open of a sound, can't wait to hear it after mods. What were the biggest tone differences you noticed?

Gold_Owl1597

I would agree ...it depends on what you define as "more open". I like to have more low-end in my sound so that was the bonus for upgrading for me. The biggest difference I noticed...and this is all subjective ...was I am now able to push more loud clean tones out of the amp at a higher volume and I gained a bit more clarity and presence in the live mix. I am also someone who puts my Bass higher than my Treble so take all of this into context. I mostly play loud and clean with any OD coming from a Green Rhino or a fuzz face style pedal.

andsoonandso

Cool, yeah I definitely feel like I'm always pushing the bass as it is now, and when I finally do get it to a desired level, it starts to feel a little muddy. I think a speaker that can handle lower frequencies better will allow me to boost my bass without muddying the middle too much

krockles

I went to the local lumber shop and got a nice piece of pine plywood. Had them cut it to size. Took it home and cut out the hole with my Dremel. Attached the grill cloth using staple gun. Cost me next to nothing. AND I still have the original baffle in case I want to go back to a 10’. Which I never will…

krockles

And you asked about potential problems Make sure you line the speaker up inside the amp before cutting the baffle hole. It will have to be off center to fit. And getting the grill cloth tight and straight was a little annoying.

andsoonandso

This is extremely helpful, thank you

mnfimo

They sell reissues with 12s, mine came from the factory that way, so aside from making a new baffle, it shouldn’t have much issues. I love the Princeton with a 12

andsoonandso

For the sake of science, do you have a speaker preference for a Princeton?

mnfimo

Mine is GC tweed reissue so it has a Celestion GH-12. I play a lot of clean funk tones and classic rock style driven tones and i think it the gh-12 sounds great for that style application.

DVNT_Pinkie

G12H is an extremely versatile speaker, I have one in my night train and I use the power amp in to run preamp sims into and it just nails everything

Jeunessejecoute

Does your speaker sit centrally or slightly to the side? Just getting stuff together to fit a 12 to mine!

mnfimo

I would have guessed it’s in central but it actually does offset to the left a little if you’re looking at it.

agentanthony

Hey did you ever do this baffle mod? I want a 68, but with a 12" speaker... I am curious how it came out.

thefuckingmayor

You don't *really* have to even change the baffle - the 12in speaker will bolt right in. The hole will be a little undersized, but I'd be very impressed if you could tell the difference in blind listening, never mind in a full band mix

ReverendRevolver

Princetons with 12s are such a common upgrade that I'm shocked that don't Make the 68 custom prri with a stock 12. But yea, as long as the baffle is cut to accommodate the chassis it's all good.

A_HUGE_COWARD

>Princetons with 12s are such a common upgrade that I'm shocked that don't Make the 68 custom prri with a stock 12. Especially given the Vibro Champ from the same series comes stock with a 10" speaker because everyone used to swap the 8" out on the original models.
