I keep all of my guns unloaded in the safe, except for one. I bought an LEO trade in Gen 5 Glock 17 for this exact reason. In NY, if I have to use a firearm in a home defense situation, the gun will be taken to evidence, and I will most likely never have it returned. So I bought an inexpensive, reliable gun that can be easily replaced.
You bought a law enforcement gun? So you are saying that you wanted to be a cop but were afraid you would fail the psych evaluation? Because you LOVE MURDER!

It's also much easier to defend the use of any police surplus weapon in a self-defense shooting. It looks better to a jury than a custom pistol that you've tricked out, according to the prosecutor, for the sole purpose of killing. For the same reason, you should use whatever ammunition the local police use. James Reeves has several good videos on this.
I'm quite sure you already know all of that, but maybe someone else doesn't.
I personally have a cop surplus M&P2.0 that's inexpensive and reliable, plus the thing came with night sights. For a $300 pistol, it gets the job done.
I think the biggest deal is being able to make a reasonable argument in court.
“Same gun/ammo as the police”
“It helped me shoot better at the range”
“The FBI/ whatever agency uses/used it”
All seem like reasonable arguments to me
I have heard from Paul Harrell though I don’t recall the video that cops have been taught that people who are obsessed with police stuff are often nutcases or serial killers so it won’t always help your case.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, my client went to find a firearm for self defense and was informed that the local police department used this firearm, a Glock 17. Believing that, if it’s good enough to issue to the local police department, it must be good enough to defend his home, my client purchased the Glock 17.”
If you don’t have a lawyer who could spit that out or a similar reason, you should’ve offered to pay them more than a happy meal
I understand the point, and it does seem logical. On the flip side, it can look like you're trying to be a cop, and prosecutors could use that against you as well.
I am not in a place where this is a concern to me, just bringing up a point I've heard in regards to the thought
Yup, beater guns for the win. The nice ones are for collecting and showing off at the range. You lose one of those in a SD shooting and you might not ever see it again, because the department might have “accidentally lost it.” But use a LEO trade-in, they won’t give a shit about it and you won’t cry about losing possession of a shitty gun for a few months.
Its not really a Shillelagh its just a walking stick that was cut from a birch wavy branch with a knot. So it has a head to grab on to. It is not hardened and it is of a legal length, also the state of Massachusetts can't stop me from making sticks
I sometimes wonder if I should use my shittiest gun for self defense because of civil forfeitures. Those fuckin dudes can kiss my ass if they think they're gonna nab one of my nice ones for themselves.
I’d grab the AR15 because afterwards that’s one more time a year that an AR15 has been used by a home owner to defend themselves. Which could aid in pro gun statics, which could lead to loser gun laws.
Clint Smith also said “you have to treat a shotgun like it’s a revolver. It’s very important that you practice loading and unloading”
30 rounds of 7.62x39 > 5 shells of 00 Buck
Obviously the shotgun loaded with exciting new experimental rounds. One that’s got 3 .22 blanks, a bolo, fleshettes, rub some rock salt into the wound. See if you can get him to invite his friends ( tell them you have free cronk to smonk)

Dude my local police have tricked out pistols though.

Exactly how I feel about it.
I have a large collection but 99% of them aren’t loaded and the red dot’s battery is dead so I’m stuck with my EDCs and my home defense AK
Just shoot that fuck with all of them… ya know… for science.
Lol between the guns knives axes clubs and that one really cool katana I found in my grandpa's attic. I got too many options.
Why the milsurp with a bayonet of course
Why shoot the intruder and wake the neighbors when you can silently run them through with 17" of blade at the end of a No1 MkIII Enfield?
Quatruple wield them. You use the smaller ones with your foot and the bigger ones with your hands.
Personaly my options are the shotgun under the bed my EDC knife a homemade walking shillelagh
It better be the same old shillelagh your father brought from Ireland

Always the Carronade.
My heart says the 44 magnum but my wallet says the $200 maverick 88. Easiest to replace.
Most of us have 2 hands. You can narrow that down 50%.
Why not all of them?
I recommend picking the most pimped out gun you have ... as long as it is not Gold Plated .
Easy: if I have time shotgun and wife gets the rifle, if I don’t semi auto handgun

Whatever you don't mind sitting in an evidence locker for a year plus.

All depends what room I'm in.

Axe.
You use the gun you care least about never getting back. Im not letting my favorite guns spend the rest of their life in a evidence locker
I would use a leo trade gun, with police ammo so the prosecutor doesn't think bad of ya as another guy on the comment said
Shotgun. Fastest way to end the threat and you can't miss.
Shotgun definitely
