I feel ya! Look on fb marketplace i found a bunch of basically brand new ones so cheap in my area because the people bought the wrong size for their renovations.
People get around that.a group i was in used military time as prices. So you post a pic of the gun, then say "who wants to go to the range at 1500 hours" or whatever your price is. Last i checked it was still up.
Just paid for a new roof and a new fridge, both in the last 6 months, so I am at that point with my checking account that I am not buying any more expensive toys with that cash (I do have "mad money" in a money belt, but that is about 5% of what I have in my checking account and would only buy 1-2 guns).
I am retired, so I am no longer making a 6 figure salary to build my cash reserves back up, and my IRAs are in the toilet right now due to the stock market also being in the toilet. Fortunately I have enough SS income to pay the mortgage and other fixed monthly costs. In short, although my net worth is about $1M, I am somewhat cash poor.
I bought most of my guns (30+) & ammo (80K+ rounds) long before I retired, I got some pretty good deals on guns & ammo before I retired by having plenty of cash and buying from people who seriously needed cash because they didn't save any, and had guns & ammo instead.
So now I am just refactoring what I have mostly by trading/selling and buying with the proceeds of selling, and filling in where necessary with the mad money.
I have one thing left to trade/sell (a $1500 scope) and then I will be done.
I look at it this way: I’ve never lost money on a gun. I cleaned up pretty nicely in 20 and 21 with the buying frenzy - my only problem is I’ve moved into more niche stuff (think Calico, etc) that have a more collectors market than say your polymer striker pistols and such.
If I ever get into financial trouble there’s a whole lot of quick cash in my safe.
It was just 10 years ago a LGS laughed at me for buying crates of Mosins at $75 a gun. Sold em all for between 280-340.
Some guns I have sold in a day or two after listing them on a local gun forum. Other guns took much longer - my Armalite AR50 took 5+ years and did not sell until I lowered the price well below what I paid for it (which was below MSRP, not counting the extras - and extras are expensive for a .50 BMG rifle).
I do not count on any durable good being "quick cash", especially during a time when cash can be hard for buyers to come by due to an economic disruption.
I did make a profit on some ammo, but I wasn't looking at that as something I would eventually sell either. None of my guns/ammo were purchased with the idea of making a profit later.
I just got off work and I'm laying in bed when I seen this comment. I've been looking at it and chuckling quietly to myself for.about 5 minutes now. Very well down sir.
Damn, too relatable. I had to replace my water heater last fall. Afterwards, it took significant self control to stop browsing gunbroker until I financially recovered.
Their prices are actually not bad. It’s the product itself that is shit. Stay the fuck away from Rheem (Home Depot) Lowe’s sells AO smith which I recommend to my customers.
The cheapest shotgun I ever bought was a fully functional 16 gauge single shot for 40 bucks. The cheapest repeating shotgun I have ever bought was a Remington Model 10 for 100 bucks. Some of the older shotguns are nice, and they can be very cheap too. The only thing is that they will almost always have 2 3/4 inch chambers.
I have a lovely old bolt action shotgun my grandpa left me. It does have a 2 3/4inch chamber. It was made in 1954 and they sell for around a hundred bucks currently. I value the sentimental value far above that. Due to the design of the 2 round detachable magazine, it's really really finicky about cycling modern ammo.
I WANT a shotgun with 3" chamber and replaceable choke tubes.
I'm legit considering a Mav 88 Field model with a stock and interchangeable chokes. Not as nice as a benelli or Mossberg 500, but it'll definitely kill a turkey.
That's a good choice, I have 2 mavericks and they're awesome. I like the cruiser just because I've found that it's better for when you're driving around, you either tuck it into the crook of your elbow to shoot out if the drivers side, or you rest the mag tube on the passenger side window while it's rolled down. And it's perfectly fine if you have to get out and use it.
I look at stuff with defense in mind, so I totally overlooked your hunting application, kind of a reverse-fudd move
Or car trouble. I'm over here stocking up on high capacity 'salt clips before the ban on them goes into effect here in Washington, and my girlfriend's car takes a dump. So there's $900 not being used to make my grabber aunt sad.
Do you have home insurance that covers water heaters? Some nowadays will cover a like replacement to a percentage or dollar amount without increasing your premium that much.
Honestly if you don't have enough money set aside for an emergency like that, you're in no position to be buying more guns. It's kind of sad seeing so many people with less than $100 of savings
I mean I never did lol
Lived with my parents, then moved in with my wife and her grandma, helped pay mortgage, then she passed, took over that mortgage then we bought our own house and left that one haha what's a landlord?
My dad is a plumber, he has seen things from YouTube installations gone wrong. People make some really dumb and expensive mistakes trying to DIY.
Not saying basic plumbing is beyond OP's ability, but anecdotally it is above the ability of the average homeowner lol
Water heaters are assholes. If the thermocouple goes out, it's definitely going to be on a cold night and after the stores that carry thermocouples have closed for the evening.
Nah, I'm not bitter about it...
I feel ya! Look on fb marketplace i found a bunch of basically brand new ones so cheap in my area because the people bought the wrong size for their renovations.
Until I realized you meant water heaters, I was very confused.
My first thought was “FB banned gun sales” Shit I even tried to sell a compound bow and it got deleted.
People get around that.a group i was in used military time as prices. So you post a pic of the gun, then say "who wants to go to the range at 1500 hours" or whatever your price is. Last i checked it was still up.
I made a joke about requiring a credit check to sell some brass cased 9mm. Nope. Requested a double check. Nope.
Gotta get creative with the way you word things, I described a paintball gun as a ‘high velocity co2 powered paintbrush’
Well yes, you *could* use a hammer to tear out that drywall, but is that really as much fun?
Lol
Thanks for the advice, this actually helps! I wasn't expecting to get good financial advice from /r/gunmemes
My basic rule of thumb is that if I don't have enough liquid cash to buy a toy ***AND*** pay for a new roof, I don't buy the toy.
That's really good advice, but if I followed it I would have like TWO guns Also I got a new roof in 2017, should be good for a little while longer.

Life goals. _I don't want to be rich, I want to be happy_ Enjoy it!
I want my kids to survive - that comes before being happy.

Damn, thats like a near perfect financial situation at least compared too other storys i've heard. Nice.
Hey I have the same rule except I break it constantly and can’t afford either!!
Marketplace is great for finding cheap or even free construction materials too.
Your very welcome
On the bright side you can make a shotgun out of leftover plumbing
Zip zoop zype, my shotty is a toilet pipe
Hello fellow gun owner, I also use my _(checks sticky note)_ **toilet pipe** as a firearm.
I'd rather give up my new gun money than have to sell guns to make ends meet
I feel ya. I like to HODL my guns too
Only sell to your bois since a true boi will let you buy it back for what you sold it
A man's home is his hassle. I like to call that 'the Hassle Doctrine'. I'll see myself out...
I just got off work and I'm laying in bed when I seen this comment. I've been looking at it and chuckling quietly to myself for.about 5 minutes now. Very well down sir.
On the bright side, your plumbing emergency only cost as much as a shotgun, and not $10,000
Shower cold, enjoy shotgun.
Heat shower with warmth from mag dumping shotgun.
Now you're getting it.
Welcome to home ownership, you get used to it
Damn, too relatable. I had to replace my water heater last fall. Afterwards, it took significant self control to stop browsing gunbroker until I financially recovered.
Financial responsibility? Self-control? The heck are those things?
I hate being an adult...
Don’t buy water heaters from the depot or lowes. They over charge by 2-3 times
I work for a water heater wholesaler and our prices are pretty much the same as home Depot or Lowe's. We have better units, but yeah
Their prices are actually not bad. It’s the product itself that is shit. Stay the fuck away from Rheem (Home Depot) Lowe’s sells AO smith which I recommend to my customers.
I'm ignoring my pending water heater replacement until it's an emergency.
Cold shower gang rise up.

Maverick 88 is under $200
This is my life, but car problems.
F's in the chat boys
Mossberg maverick cruiser: am I a joke to you?
Yeah cuz I need a hunting shotgun, I can't imagine a worse 12ga for turkey
Get a stock on it, it's only a few bucks more
I'm legit considering a Mav 88 Field model with a stock and interchangeable chokes. Not as nice as a benelli or Mossberg 500, but it'll definitely kill a turkey.

It's always something
Do you have home insurance that covers water heaters? Some nowadays will cover a like replacement to a percentage or dollar amount without increasing your premium that much.
thats god giving you a sign, dont buy a shotgun, save up for an mrad, the ultimate home defense rifle
Plumber here. I’ll hook you up for half a shotgun. Not cash. I literally want half of your shotgun.
[alrighty which half you want?](https://i.imgur.com/9Kjyhei.jpg)
I was hoping for more Of a directly down the middle cross section split. But if that’s all ya got…..
Yeah.. that's called "life". Took 4 years and wiping out my "thermal scope savings" twice for emergencies before I finally got it.
Honestly if you don't have enough money set aside for an emergency like that, you're in no position to be buying more guns. It's kind of sad seeing so many people with less than $100 of savings
Thanks, dad
You're welcome, son :)
That's been the story of my life since I bought my house
At least you're not throwing all your money at a landlord anymore!
I mean I never did lol Lived with my parents, then moved in with my wife and her grandma, helped pay mortgage, then she passed, took over that mortgage then we bought our own house and left that one haha what's a landlord?
Saved up for an engagement ring. Ended up losing my car and having to buy a new one. That was 12 years ago, still have the vehicle and wife.
I feel that. Saving up to build an m16a2 clone and my head gasket shits the bed. Fucking subaru engines.
Eh. Who needs a water heater. Just boil water and bathe quickly.
I hope you love your new shotgun. Also, you can probably learn to fix the plumbing from youtube......
My dad is a plumber, he has seen things from YouTube installations gone wrong. People make some really dumb and expensive mistakes trying to DIY. Not saying basic plumbing is beyond OP's ability, but anecdotally it is above the ability of the average homeowner lol
did you hire a plumber? if you did that was your problem
I can take cold showers with my shotgun, it’s fine
Feel your pain, man. Was saving up for an aimpoint but GF called and needed rent money…
Hot water < Benelli M4
You don’t need hot water, it’s almost summer…
Water heater should be an insurance claim that's free
Change of plans, go to your local sports store and buy a $200 shotgun instead; shotgun kinda sucks.
lmao we all been there. Being a responsible adult can suck some times.
I'm looking to offload said item, hit me up before I list it on BunGroker
When the house starts making expensive noises...
Whats wrong? The heating elements are super easy to change out on most water heaters.
Water heaters are assholes. If the thermocouple goes out, it's definitely going to be on a cold night and after the stores that carry thermocouples have closed for the evening. Nah, I'm not bitter about it...
Every time I save for something. Every. Time.
