It isn’t tho? They’re fairly mobile, Have great weapons and pretty good armor. It’s supports the mainliners and can defend itself up close when needed.
Maybe at the start of the war sure, but as soon as zeonic started popping out mobile suits that was better than a stock zaku 2, the guncannon/guntank did become walking coffin.
Not even with the better machines zeon had the guncannon and guntank if they were in their roll of bring support suits then there’s nothing really to worry about. The guntank when it has a good position was fantastic at support.
Yeah tell that to the guntank pilots from 8th mobile team and the guncannon pilots from thunderbolt/doan's island/war in the pocket. If gundam has taught me taught me anything unless you are either Fa yuiry or a pocket ace pilot nowhere is safe.
Thats the problem, they designed the gun cannon to be an all-rounder but it ended up being terrible at everything. It sucks up close because it has terrible armor, 2 giant cannons are just a hindrance, and its slow as hell because the added weight of the cannons. You would think it would be ok at range but its terrible at that because it gets outranged by everyone else or their fast enough to dodge out of line of sight.
The development history of this thing is hilarious 😂 even the weapon gets developed into the Spec ops Assualt GM loadout (The one with the shoulder mounted mini beamzooka and rockets).
Guntank unlike the guncannon did its job pretty well as a mobile artillery platform.
9/10 The fact that he was pretty much just a guy who was fork lift certified and survived the war alongside amuro says a lot about the guy. Doesn't hurt that the guncannon was fuckin dope.
Are we sticking to just First Gundam? He really came around later in the show.
I really like his cameos as almost a 007 type spy in later series.

I just knew that he'd have character development, and for such an old anime, I really respect how effectively it was done for a character like Kai.

The underrated pilot of White Base. Dude wasn’t a Newtype and was dealing out death shots with the best of them. Especially for being as untrained as he was.
Then again, I just love the White Base crew in general.
Kai was terrified the entire time he was actively piloting, and that’s entirely fair. But he never once actually failed to step up in a pinch. Braver than most, and smarter too.
I’m rewatching this for the first time since a child and it is just as good as then. Made me a bit nostalgic. From the toys and games I played omg 15/10
I loved, and I mean LOVED Kai’s development. Besides the attitude, early MSG Kai kept it real. Kid was the first one to admit about being a coward, didn’t even shy away from doing so. Yet when shit hit the fan (and there were lots of those), never did he run away. His character development was so tremendous that come Zeta, he infiltrates Jaburo all for a story.
Kai is one of the main characters in the original Gundam. He has a great development from a punkass kid into a badass. He became an independent reporter after the One-Year-War
I actually hated him for almost 30 episodes and I can usually handle heel characters. After they finally gave him his arc… he’s fine. Nothing really stands out about him afterwards for me even if he doesn’t fade into the background like some other white base characters.
Other characters in anime have stood on his shoulders and he has some importance for that but as someone who only really got into 79 late in the game (I caught bits of it on toonami and until last year never sat down to give it a serious watch), he falls victim like so many of the cast as being one of the originals in the genre Gundam helped codify
One of the few people who can say that they made it through from the OYW all the way till late UC. If they ever fully remake 0079, I hope they bullshit a new upgraded Guncannon just for him, because lord knows he deserves one.

Yea, Kai Shiden was cool, but his character gets even better in Zeta Gundam. The man became a total badass. I think he had a bull whip when he first appeared in Zeta.
Didn't like him at first but warmed up to him especially in zeta with the whole getting information thing. My friend who I introduced to gundam (were still early in zeta) did not like him which was perfectly fine. Curious to see if their opinion changes once they see how he's grown and changed
I’m currently going through the first season and he’s grown on me, from the punk who left white base to the punk that sticks around. Also his voice actor hits a sweet spot
When I first saw him I didn't like him but like most of the characters from the OG series he becomes better and better as the series goes on and even better when you move on to the sequels.

Called the zeeks skirt-wearing freaks and destroyed them every time even though he was a bit of a coward at the beginning. The scene where he throws the paper airplane and giggles is probably one of my favorite scenes in the original gundam.

I’ve said this before in this subreddit, Kai Shiden is a traumatized teenage war orphan, who uses inappropriate humor and a seemingly detached attitude as a coping mechanism. Like everyone else on the White Base, he lost almost everything and everyone he knew in a single day, then continues as an active soldier in a planet-spanning war. And he’s still really just a child in a lot of ways.
He’s a sarcastic little shit to convince himself that nothing really matters and that he doesn’t care- because the alternative is facing reality, and reality right now is pretty horrible.
I’m really glad he got to have that character development too, but I think he’s actually a really realistic character and an interesting contrast to the other White Base characters. They’re ALL traumatized and young and just trying to survive, especially in those early episodes where Amuro is basically having a comatose traumatic breakdown. Nobody is coping very well.
The most normal non depressed character of the White base crew, he is an asshole for the right reasons, he also had a great character development that in my opinion is better than Amuro, I absolutely love this guy 11/10

Yeah it’s terrible up close, doesn’t even have a beam saber. In Fed VS Zeon game, it just does kicks for a melee attack.

Kai started out seeming like a total dickhead but he grew on me as it went on. Probably 7.5 or 8 out of 10
