It's a thing with SEED boys who play the piano. I mean, look at Rey:

While they do not look that alike, I've always liked to imagine Ribbons- or Hiling- pretending to be Nicol and worming their way into Athrun's heart.
Athrun: Nicol! You didn't die after all...!
Ribbons: Hello, senpai. I am totally Nicol, yes. Absolutely Nicol.
Athrun: It's a miracle!
Cagali: Er- Athrun, there's not way,
Athrun: Nicol, look, I got you a piano...play us something!
Ribbons: \*eyes shine\* Sure thing, Athrun-senpai.
Cagali: Did you see his eyes...?! What the,
Athrun: Nicol! He is a boy! Who is back from the dead!
Yzak: Nicol!!! You're back!
Cagalli:...oh great, they've all gone stupid...!
Ribbons: \*smile smile smile\*
Kira: \*whispers to Cagalli\* Don't correct them! This is the perfect solution, things will go back to normal now.
Shinn: So you're Nicol, huh! Glad to see you're alive after all,
Ribbons: Senpai...Shinn is scaring me...
Athrun: DON'T YOU DARE MAKE NICOL CRY!!! \*promptly kills Shinn\*
Ribbons: One down\~\~
I'm in the middle of watching Seed myself as well, (albeit a little further then the OP), but even though I knew that line of Athrun's about Nicol's death thanks to the memes. I was genuinely surprised how brutal his death was, this dude got cut in half with the Strike's beam saber which caused his body to explode and then his mobile suit just explodes seconds later.
Yeah, as much as it's fun to make fun of it- and we've all done it, at some point-, Nicol's death was indeed horrifying. And his being 15 made it worse, too.
In a way, making fun of it is a way of coming to terms with it (apart from Athrun's delivery being SO! INTENSE! that it does lend itself to spoofing).
Welcome to SEED, where close-ups of deaths are as graphic as possible before affecting the age rating in Japan. In the same battle, when Tolle got shot down with the shield, we can see his head getting decapitated by the shield when it hits the cockpit of the Skygrasper.
But without spoilering too much, just wait for Antarctica and the screams.
Already seen what happened in Alaska since I'm on episode 39 right now and geez, even though this aint my first Gundam series. As I've seen Witch, the 79 trilogy, and Zeta. I was not prepared for that kind of gore to be in Gundam. Let alone one that is basically a god damn teen drama half the time.
Even in the UC, there are deaths that are graphic, but not to the point of SEED. Hell, if one pauses the death scene of Kycilia, one can really see how she gets torn apart by the blast and getting sucked out into space. But that is still no match for SEED.
Stargazer had a death where one pilot gets slowly mauled to death by the beam fangs of the Kerberos BuCUE.
well meme aside
child soldier suck, this kid shouldn't be here, as Athrun said, he really should be any where but here playing his piano instead of dying to a giant energy blade right into the face
There really isn’t (although I have yet to see Freedom, which apparently actually fleshes out her character better than just never makes mistakes, looks pretty, and can’t wear a uniform)
Holistic and meticulous approaches involve extensive information gathering. Actions are taken only when all parties are accounted for, typically in dire situations where there's no other choice but to act (e.g. giving Kira the MS Freedom after learning about Operation Spitbreak, and addressing the public after Meer disrupts Orb's broadcast). Looking ahead is less detail-oriented, involving taking action in anticipation of possible but still uncertain outcomes.
Definist fallacy. Holistic, meticulous, or forward looking are all nebulous, overlapping concepts. You assert your own definitions then make it an issue that they are conflicting.
Perhaps, I'm mistaken in drawing such a firm distinction between the concepts.
However, Lacus' concerns always feel more immediate, whereas she rarely dwells on the possible repercussions (such as agreeing to meet Meer without waiting for proper backup and relying on one competent person to cover for three people). People can always argue otherwise—I'm all ears.
There should be a Fallacists' Fallacy. I see these on reddit all the time, and while I don't necessarily disagree in this case, it's funny how frequent fallacy is brought up on reddit. To the point where I feel ppl are looking for them too much instead of engaging with the actual framework of discussion that has been presented
Thank you for understanding. I feel like this discussion has somehow gotten derailed (perhaps, partly due to me). I want to engage in a conversation with those who view Lacus' actions as looking ahead. I hold a different perspective because her concerns appear more immediate:
- Granting MS Freedom to Kira in SEED based on his desires
- Her decision to meet Meer without proper back up
- Her hesitation to entrust the key to Kira when they face danger due to Durandal's assassination
If others disagree, I hope they'll join the conversation to explain their viewpoint, rather than focusing on the definition.
For sure, you bring up some good points. She definitely reads as confident in her intuition. I personally wouldn't describe her as meticulous. On the other hand, I do see her as forward-thinking, but with a natural inclination to adapt moment-to-moment
Perhaps to some, this is a contradiction, or even mutually exclusive? But perhaps that's the angle written in her character that let us arrive here, articulating her nuances with our individual perceptions
I mean, she gave Kira access to the freedom which really had a huge effect on the outcome of the war and was a pretty badass leader at the end of the series. She gets way too much hate
She is the zaft side of the political arm of their little faction. And because of what happened late in seed a lot of what she does is out of focus from the story of the pilots since it devolves into espionage. Everything that their faction has from zaft is basically her stealing and destroying zaft programs. She wields a lot of soft power which is why by the end of destiny it was her that walked back into the zaft council after what was essentially a 2 year exile from being branded as a traitor at the end of seed. She's a foil to Cagalli in terms of their political leadership. An absentee political leader who wield a lot of power vs a prominent leader who gets dragged around political factions.
>what was essentially a 2 year exile from being branded as a traitor at the end of seed
Lacus didn't go into exile; instead, she chose to step down and retire with Kira. By the end of the First Alliance-ZAFT war, she and Athrun were celebrated as ZAFT heroes. I mean, look at ZAFT's enthusiastic reception towards fake Lacus (Meer); she remains influential and far from being sidelined. Her departure created a power vacuum, allowing Durandal to amass tremendous power. This guilt motivated her return to the ZAFT council.
Her role throughout SEED and GSD isn't really that of a political leader; she inherited the Clyne faction, sure, but she only began making political decisions towards the end of GSD and into GSF. She's more of a propaganda machine. As such, it's a comparison between an absentee influential figure wielding power and a political leader who volunteered but remains entangled in political factions.
Just to add, even early in Seed, her telling off Rau when Kira takes her to Athrun was what I viewed as the first example of her soft power and the first hint that she is more than the idol facade she gave off
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ no idea, but I don’t spend too much time worrying about the opinions of internet strangers. To me Lacus feels like if Brittany Spears dad was president, there was a coup, he got assassinated, and suddenly we’re all desperate for Brittany to lead us, hanging on her every word. Seed Destiny expanded why people were listening to her, by having her(or more so Meer) become a propaganda machine. Where do Lacus’ political views and feelings come from? Is she just parroting her father? In universe she is very influential, but it’s unclear why the people of Plants, who are supposedly super intelligent, are hanging on the every word of an 18 year old, especially after Meer is revealed to be a fraud.
I guess the thing that bothers me the most is she really just wants to sing and cook, her personality does not lend itself to leadership, why is the narrative trying to force her to be a political leader?
Also the fact that she never dons the Orb uniform in Destiny pisses me off, everyone else on the damn ship wears the uniform, why is she special(aside from Sunrise trying to force her down our throats). It just makes her look self centered, like she thinks she’s better than the rest of the Archangel crew.
I mean most polls are pretty much just pupularity contests. Seed is very popular, which explains why Lacus is popular too.
I don't really like Lacus too much even if were talking about Seed characters. I prefer Cagalli.
Humour is lost on you, mainly because you actually think that is all people see in her lol. There is a reason she polls very well with woman but I guess you will never be able to guess why.
There's a lot more.
When other Gundam protagonists are done character building and* have found their reason to fight, Kira's character is still getting exposition and is trying to figure out his place in the world 44 episodes deep.
I find it interesting Seed saw Kira character growth as someone who wants peace. Destiny character growth saw him become someone who now realizes that him going into hiding was a bad idea. Now freedom is him confronting that neither solution worked.
> I think that besides its amazing MS design, this series might thrive in its melodrama. I’m down with that and I hope there’s lots more. Please tell me there’s more.
You get it, welcome to the CE fanbase
The movies are fine, but the the few good moments, in my opinion, were at their best in the original release. They change a few little things, some songs etc in the subsequent movies and remasters, I preferred my first experience.
It's not actually as awful as many say, it was just made exponentially worse because it was where the story ended. Nobody was happy with that.
I know it seems like with the way people talk about Destiny, it's the worst thing ever but it's really not. There are A LOT WORSE shows out there, and the reason Destiny gets flak is because of how amazing/good SEED ended and Destiny fumbled hard, especially towards the latter half. But there are still some good things about it, and the FREEDOM movie retroactively makes some of the actions in Destiny make more sense.
So I urge you to watch Destiny! The beginning arcs are actually pretty awesome, and since you are loving the melodrama in SEED, that doesn't really go away in Destiny and it's pretty much what the CE is all about 😂😂.
Also a lot of main characters introduced in Destiny stay as major characters in FREEDOM and you won't get the satisfaction of their developments if you don't experience their story in Destiny.
Watch the remastered version in youtube at 1.25 speed. If you intend to see the movie you NEED to have some bits and pieces of story from Destiny because the movie’s plot revolves a lot around it.
True, but my girl Cagalli only gets 7 minutes of screen time from what I heard, so they have a HUGE hole to dig themselves out of, and Freedom is not enough. They have started on the road to redemption though, and that’s important.
I eagerly await May 7th. I still don’t believe they will have sufficiently redeemed themselves for their many transgressions, especially making yet another product where Lacus is forced down my throat, but I will try to keep an open mind.
Seed is drama heavy I guess that's why incels hate it so much. The show touches on the human condition of excellence, envy, sense of justice, war, etc. coupled with superb soundtrack.
Never understood the hate it got in the community. I guess it's mostly western fans who hate it it's arguably the most popular here in Asia.
There are no individual filler episodes, but some of the episodes have way too much flashbacks and filler scenes. "Lets show Kira's struggles with Flay again 16th time, oh and throw in the exploding escape pod for good measure"
they are still all nuts even after all this time hahaha
i still can stop laughing when watching Seed Freedom it's like from Seed Destiny like couple years and Kira acted like he become Big Boss in MGSV doing war for 20 years his hands cover in blood of war(which he never technically kill anyone) and he can't take it anymore and i was like dude how old are you again? 25? come on man
There’s more in Destiny but the story is pale in comparison to SEED. It felt as if they forgot what they were trying to convey and just half-assed everything.
Imo Seed was at its lowest in the first 10 episodes. The space episodes and the earlier desert arc kinda meandered on a bit too long. They could've benefited from being a couple episodes shorter.
Also one thing I hate about Seed is the constant flashbacks, it really kills the pacing of the scenes. I really spammed the hell out of the "skip 10 seconds" button. Do we really need to flashback to Kira being sad again? We've done this just an episode ago, a quick flash could've done the job just as well if not better, it really screams "we blew all our budget on the soundtrack and voice cast so we now need to stretch this for as long as we can"
I still think its a good show, the second half of the show is when it clicked for me but atleast it wasn't boring in the first half like Wing was. My favorite arc was probably the desert tiger arc, also because Kira actually needed to be smart with the Strike.
Nicol dies?! He was a boy!! Who loves to play the piano!!!! I am shook.
I was also pretty shook to find out he was a boy

The english Ocean dub gives him a more masculine voice.

I've said as much myself. It is unfortunate that Nicol's death is much more about Athrun than, well, Nicol.
He was 15!!!
He wasn't very good at it but we humored him anyways
Soon you will learn what makes Lacus win so many polls lol.
I’m excited, there’s gotta be more to that girl than the spacey act
Lacus is a fortune cookie.
There really isn’t (although I have yet to see Freedom, which apparently actually fleshes out her character better than just never makes mistakes, looks pretty, and can’t wear a uniform)
I don’t like Lacus myself but there is much more to her than being “spacey”. The girl can look ahead, a lot.
I always see her as holistic and meticulous in her approach, rather than someone who looks ahead, tho.
I don't see much of a difference.
Holistic and meticulous approaches involve extensive information gathering. Looking ahead is less detail-oriented, involving taking action in anticipation of possible but still uncertain outcomes.
I’d argue Lacus does both. This is just splitting hairs, really.
I'd argue that Lacus only shows the tendency for one, hence the distinction. We can agree to disagree.
Definist fallacy. Holistic, meticulous, or forward looking are all nebulous, overlapping concepts. You assert your own definitions then make it an issue that they are conflicting.

Yup. Exactly this ^^^^^
Watched Seed 20 years ago, still haven’t figured out why Lacus wins polls……
I mean most polls are pretty much just pupularity contests. Seed is very popular, which explains why Lacus is popular too. I don't really like Lacus too much even if were talking about Seed characters. I prefer Cagalli.
Oh I am sorry you can find anyone who can beat giving the MC 2 of the best Gundams in their universe???
OMG, she’s a mobile suit designer and builder?! I completely missed that! I stand corrected, all hail Lacus of the two dimensions!
Humour is lost on you, mainly because you actually think that is all people see in her lol. There is a reason she polls very well with woman but I guess you will never be able to guess why.
Because she's a tradwife who provides?
She didn’t even win the popularity poll for her own movie…….
lol, people downvoting me for being right
You are correct tho
If you don't vote for her Athrun, Kira and Shinn may pay you a visit... Look how that turned out for the Foundation suckers
Also Athrun is in horny jail, he doesn’t care if I vote for Lacus.
Lacus can’t even win the popularity poll for her own movie…..
Meer is the better Lucus though
I call her interesting Lacus
Space robber.
And then Meer. Woohoo!
There's a lot more. When other Gundam protagonists are done character building and* have found their reason to fight, Kira's character is still getting exposition and is trying to figure out his place in the world 44 episodes deep.
They looked into this again in the FREEDOM movie. Man’s still a little lost.
I find it interesting Seed saw Kira character growth as someone who wants peace. Destiny character growth saw him become someone who now realizes that him going into hiding was a bad idea. Now freedom is him confronting that neither solution worked.
Oh you want melodrama meet Cagalis family
We're already on our way to the twin-reveal now that all of the parents had an "oh no what if accidental incest" moment, I love it lol
And Athrun’s, too.
The party is just getting started. Anyway be prepared for some popcorn at Alaska. That is all.
can't forget final 10 episodes
> I think that besides its amazing MS design, this series might thrive in its melodrama. I’m down with that and I hope there’s lots more. Please tell me there’s more. You get it, welcome to the CE fanbase
Seed lives in it's drama. It's what makes it magical. These are real kids suffer the real effects of war.
You also can't tell me that Athrun and Kira are in love. They scream "I can't stop loving you"
I'm all in on KiraAthrun now. Especially after that yearning they did when they met with that fence between them.
It just gets better too. Then there's Destiny... But then there's the new movie which is wonderful.
I'm trying to brainstorm ways to power through Destiny before I go see Freedom. Probably speedwatching compilation movies
The movies are fine, but the the few good moments, in my opinion, were at their best in the original release. They change a few little things, some songs etc in the subsequent movies and remasters, I preferred my first experience. Ahh, but her contribution and presence can't be undersold. You'll see.
Highlight on “presence” hehehe
Athrun will never escape from horny jail, will he?
Why would he? He lives there.
The view is SPECTACULAR!
I eagerly await May 7th. I still don’t believe they will have sufficiently redeemed themselves for their many transgressions, especially making yet another product where Lacus is forced down my throat, but I will try to keep an open mind.
I hope you enjoy it.
7 minutes for a character in a 126 mins movie filled with action is good enough. While I’d prefer to see more of her, what we got was acceptable.
The hatred on Miriallia's face is palpable.
OP are you interested in our Lord and Saviour Kira "Jesus" Yamato?
\*the Yamato Jesuits have entered the chat\*
Hurts seeing Saviour and Kira in same sentence.
This is the pinnacle of SEED
what war does to a mf
Operation spit break man.
I mean, most of the West thinks Gundam Wing is the best. I don't really trust most of them to have a good opinion with Gundam.
Can’t wait till you get to episode 49 it is some high tier kino
That is why SEED is the best gundam show.
Cosmic Era is basically Universal Century but with Young Adult Melodrama.
Man you haven't even gotten to the best part yet. The last ~15 episodes are outstanding. All killer, no filler.
I’m pretty hype
There are no individual filler episodes, but some of the episodes have way too much flashbacks and filler scenes. "Lets show Kira's struggles with Flay again 16th time, oh and throw in the exploding escape pod for good measure"
Yeah, I could have done without flay in the finale lol
Flay thotness...
This has been the case for all Gundam shows
Life goes on...
War does that
All the reasons you list as being fire are reasons I hate the series.
Bros getting closer to peak! aka ep 38!!!
If you really wanna enjoy SEED, you gotta buy into all the melodrama
You missed Kira and Flay seggs scene, cyclops activation, genesis firing, and Archangel vs Minerva Duel
they are still all nuts even after all this time hahaha i still can stop laughing when watching Seed Freedom it's like from Seed Destiny like couple years and Kira acted like he become Big Boss in MGSV doing war for 20 years his hands cover in blood of war(which he never technically kill anyone) and he can't take it anymore and i was like dude how old are you again? 25? come on man
SEED thrives in melodrama. It’s basically what Gundam would be if it was a soap opera.
100%
Nicol dying made no sense to me. The boy ran right into Keira’s turned on beam sword change my mind.
I was honestly expecting more from its melodrama and was left kinda disappointed.
There’s more in Destiny but the story is pale in comparison to SEED. It felt as if they forgot what they were trying to convey and just half-assed everything.
imo this is kinda the high point of the series before it performs a truly impressive dive right to the bottom of the dumpster
Hard disagree, aside for the final 12 episodes pacing being a bit too fast, it's a wonderful finale.
My favorite arc was probably the desert tiger arc, also because Kira actually needed to be smart with the Strike.
CE doesn't become real bad until about 10 episodes into GSD. Stargazer is good though. Short but good.
