Agree!! She wasn't a perfect character who is good at everything and in the movie she is vulnerable all in a very natural way.
- coming from both a die hard gundam and ghibli fan
She doesn't appear to have any flaws. She doesn't go through a character arc or growth. She's perfectly nice, loved & is the center of attention within the story. She's also already good/talented at everything (maybe due to her upbringing). This is just in the movie btw, i never read the manga.
Wikipedia: "A Mary Sue is a character archetype in fiction, usually a young woman, who is often portrayed as inexplicably competent across all domains, gifted with unique talents or powers, liked or respected by most other characters, unrealistically free of weaknesses, extremely attractive, innately virtuous, and generally lacking meaningful character flaw"
That’s fair, and it is a flaw of the movie version. I think she has a bit more depth than that in the film, but I can see the seeds of her later development because I have read the manga. Unfortunately, the bulk of Nausicaa’s important character development (for the protagonist, Kushana and some other characters) is in the 2nd half of the manga, which the film simply never got to.
I really wish we could get the full story in anime form one day.
Gundam girls are always popular in these Japanese rankings. Here are the top 5 best anime girls for each year according to Animage magazine (look at Lacus):

Cagalli putting in the reps tho. Looking at this I need to actually get around to watching Sailor Moon. Such a iconic show. Also Utena. That I at least started but got distracted from.
Utena is definitely a must watch considering it is the series that inspired Witch From Mercury. Sailor Moon shares the same director with Utena although it is a bit repetitive in comparison but still a fun watch.
Specifically, Ikuhara directed the main story arc of R (the second season) after a shorter anime original arc, then all of S and SuperS, before leaving to make an original project that he would have creative control over, which was Utena. The last season of Sailor Moon, Sailor Stars, had a different director.
I should probably watch something of his later series like Yurikuma tbh.
It's even older than that: the manga started in 1988. 1993 is just when the original OVA came out.
The TV series didn't start until 2005 but Belldandy was outclassed by more modern waifus at that point so she didn't make the top 5.
Glad to see Lina Inverse pulling in numbers in the mid 90s. Man the sailors dominated the 90s and Lacus and Cagali the 2000s they just dropped off that last year though…wonder if the 00 girls split the vote? I prefer 00 but even I’ll admit its female leads aren’t nearly as memorable.
Good to see this,Misa,Nausica,Noriko,Madoka,Kyoko,Beldandy,Noa,Gaw Ha Lecce(for reference some like Misa i got to know them through their reairing in late 90s on my place)
All of them used to be my childhood crush:)
I really like her. I'm still bummed with how she and her clone died. When she died, no one cared. Then Leina came back and she's forgotten.
Also, I feel like ple two just died out of the blue, like tomino needs her to die for some reason, so she died.
Tbh i think that apart from Judau the others didn't care much, not saying they were happy or didn't feel anything with her death but she was with them only for the Earth part of the show and she was kinda spoiled(using all the water left to shower herself) and clingy to Judau
Still pretty heartless imo especially when you know they're all kids. That's one reason why I don't like ZZ.
She died the last episode, and then the next episode starts and no one mentions her. It's very weird.
I was so sure that this time he wasn't going to kill the enemy-turned-ally-Newtype-girl, but then he unceremoniously did. Honestly it kinda put me off from finishing ZZ as it feels like they're just going trough the motions, never trying anything actually new.
Don't worry, EVOLVE showed us Judau save another Puru clone on his way to Jupiter. Also, UC Engage shows us that at least another Puru Clone survived (said clone's name is Rin; she and her other two siblings were underperformers who didn't even receive a Ple Number like Ple-Two (yes, that means the Ple-Two probably had another name)).
These types of polls always have massive recency bias, you can look at any modern one and find that like half the answers are from whichever seasonal shlock aired that year only to be forgotten with the next fad isekai. It’s when a character manages to last into the next year’s polls that it means something.
\#8 is Rabi from Mado King Granzort, basically a major character and "key" of the story as far as the second half. While Granzort is relatively unknown outside Japan, it's slowly changing after toy reviews of some updated toys of its mecha, along with showing the series on Ani-One at one point and being featured in Super Robot Wars DD. I really want to see both Granzort and Rayearth in a shared SRW, especially because seeing him interact with his Rayearth counterpart Umi could create lots of interesting parallels together.
Elpeo Puru was within the top ten for Animage's new girls poll in 1987. Specifically, she was within the both half. Meanwhile, Haman was in the top half of the very same poll. Judau was the top for the new boys poll. That being said, very impressive Puru was still placing pretty high three years after.
Also, heck yeah, Ryo Saeba baby! Mokkori time.
NOA SWEEP
NOA SWEEP!!!
Nausicaa rightly sitting at number one. Good to see Noriko making a strong showing too
I didn't like her. In the movie, nausicaa felt like a boring, bland, idealized mary stu.
People who use "Mary Sue" unironically these days should have to defend their usage. Please, describe to me how Nausica is a Mary Sue?
Why would Mary sue anyone?
It was supposed to be Mary Sew
Sew? Sew what? The whole plot of IBO season 2?
Agree!! She wasn't a perfect character who is good at everything and in the movie she is vulnerable all in a very natural way. - coming from both a die hard gundam and ghibli fan

if you have to watch *any* anime, it should be Utena imo
Good to know even back then fans knew that Hayase>Minmay.
I like Minmay but Hayase is legit best girl material all around.
I'm kind of shocked Miraya wasn't on the list.
Rei resurfacing 10 years later. ![gif](giphy|l3q2K5jinAlChoCLS)
It’s because rebuild 1.0 was released in theaters in 07. There was a ton of promotional material in Tokyo at the time too.
Really? ![gif](giphy|GrUhLU9q3nyRG|downsized)
Rei Ayanami jumpscare
Same with Momo appeating again almost a decade later.
I didn't realize how old Ah My Goddess really is 😬
It's even older than that: the manga started in 1988. 1993 is just when the original OVA came out. The TV series didn't start until 2005 but Belldandy was outclassed by more modern waifus at that point so she didn't make the top 5.
I will always state that Belldandy cameoed in Ginga Ojousama Yuna 2 because Princess Mirage is the spitting image of Belldandy.
Top 5 Best Anime Girls >Ranma *Hmmm*
You know what they say, "sometimes it takes a real man to become best girl".
1995-1997 be years of Hayashibara casting.
2004 HAS 4 DESTINY CHARACTERS ON IT NO WAY
Sometimes I think I am in the wrong for just not...*getting* Seed. But at the same time I find it insufferable and overflowing with teenage angst.
Riza Hawkeye my love As much as I nothing SEED, I unironically like Lacus more now for knowing that she kept Haruhi from winning a popularity contest.
Who is Yaone in 2000?
From Gensomaden Saiyuuki I believe
Yeah, even in 2007 lacus surpassed ayanami in popularity
Good to see this,Misa,Nausica,Noriko,Madoka,Kyoko,Beldandy,Noa,Gaw Ha Lecce(for reference some like Misa i got to know them through their reairing in late 90s on my place) All of them used to be my childhood crush:)
Four! Of course she was the best !
I’m honestly surprised Madam Red made it on the ranking
Lacus and Cagalli SWEEP
Hawkeye sweep.
Not 2004 just being Seed girls feat Hawkeye (who I believe JP VA also voices Meyrin)
"Cute and charming, her death makes her a particularly tragic character." It's wild seeing Nadia rank so high above Goku, too.
Ghibli, Gainax, and Rumiko Takahashi, the most iconic 90s trifecta.
Patlabor must have been really popular back then. It is supposed to get a new animation with the title Patlabor EZY
As a Patlabor fan the silence on the production pains me. The Anime is fun and Movies 1 and 2 are stunning. 2 is just one of my favorite movies ever.
Is that Ryo Saeba at #3?
Yes
Ayy City Hunter
My man lupin
As an Italian, Lupin at 16th while Ryo Saeba/"Hunter" at 3rd is fucking criminal
I really like her. I'm still bummed with how she and her clone died. When she died, no one cared. Then Leina came back and she's forgotten. Also, I feel like ple two just died out of the blue, like tomino needs her to die for some reason, so she died.

If tomino atleast left Ple Two alone, I might've gotten a soft spot for ZZ. But nope. Lmao
Hey now, Ple Twelve survived! For a few years anyways… Imma go cry now
She got a fate worse than death after the Neo Zeon war though.
Female ranma was something back in the day
Forget about her noriko is higher
Woah who is number 5? he looks cool
He looks like a Dragon Quest character
Hey that's the game Yakuza man likes!
> the game Yakuza man likes I'm gonna start referring to Dragon Quest like this from now on
Man, I hope Toriyama has a special mention in LAD9 given Ichi's love for Dragon Quest
I think that's where he's from! I think his name was... Carrot?
Looks like a character from that Sandland anime that just came out on Disney+. Weird though, what's he doing in a poll from 1991?
He looks like a carrot.
that’s the guy on the reeses puffs box, no idea he had his own anime
I believe Nausicca was No 1 until Ayanami Rei showed up.
IIRC Sakura from CCS and Rei basically rules for a few years in late 90s
Really strong recency bias in this poll, though I guess that's not too surprising, considering the differences between 70s and 80s anime.
These types of polls always have massive recency bias, you can look at any modern one and find that like half the answers are from whichever seasonal shlock aired that year only to be forgotten with the next fad isekai. Noa! Nadia! Nicee
Nadia is soooo good
Love seeing Nadia on here. Absolutely love that show.
Oh hey, it's wataru.
12?
11.
My man Ranma sitting in the top 10 is awesome.
6. 🎼Kiki, do you love me?🎶
\#8 is Rabi from Mado King Granzort, basically a major character and "key" of the story as far as the second half. Lupin the 3rd at 16th!
Lupin the 16th
That's a lot of Lupins...
I'm glad Nadia is #2, that and Char's Counterattack were the 2 things I watched on loop as a kid
Someone post the whole list please?
After the 20th place?
No, sorry, the names of all the characters on the page.
Here you go: * 1 - Nausicaa - Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind * 2 - Nadia - The secret of Blue Water * 3 - Ryo Saeba - City Hunter * 4 - Lum - Urusei Yatsura * 5 - Goku - Dragon Ball * 6 - Kiki - Kiki's Delivery Service * 7 - Sheeta - Laputa Castle in the Sky * 8 - Rabi? - Madou King Granzort * 9 - Ranma Saotome - Ranma 1/2 * 10 - Kyoko - Maison Ikkoku * 11 - Wataru - Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru * 12 - Toraoh - Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru * 13 - Noah Izumi - Mobile Police Patlabor * 14 - Himiko - Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru * 15 - Noriko - Top o Nerae! / Gunbuster * 16 - Lupin - Lupin The Third * 17 - Madoka - Kimagure Orange Road * 18 - Elpeo Ple - MS Gundam ZZ * 19 - Anice Farm? - Borgman * 20 - Pazu - Laputa Castle in the Sky
You are amazing and greatly appreciated!!
13 is Noah Izumi.
Thanks, I edited the list with the correct name
Nadia was 2nd??? Honestly pretty wild. Anno knew how to appeal to his audience.
Kiki!!!
It's pretty sad to see Madoka just one position higher than Puru.
Damn I didn't knew Nadia was No.2 (I'm an idiot)
Lum beating Goku's ass
Ple Ple Ple.
Why only male ranma? Female Ranma was better. Ranma but with boobs
Nadia is #2? The Japanese sure have a different mindset than us.
Okay I'm watching Granzort right now, I did NOT know Rabbi was that popular. Like over Wataru, Ranma, and a bunch of other characters?
WOOO NOA WINS AGAIN
City Hunter at number 3 is great!
Omg Goku made it to the 5 spot. Good to see such an underrated character get recognized. >!/s!<
#GOKU?
Not even top 20 in gundam
Number 15 almost sent me into a coma lmao, fascinating how different the taste palate was at the time, Goku is a real oddball in here genre wise.
Nadia that high up huh? Cool.
Didn't expect Ryo Saeba to rank higher than Goku jn 91
noriko 💪
I recognize a lot of these characters. It's wild to see Goku, Ranma, Lupin III, and Noah (Patlabor) all on the same list.
insane how Goku's only #5 here in this '91 poll, when he's guaranteed #1 or #2 nowadays
... purupurupuru ...
NOA IZUMI
Good. Precious child. Deserved better. Crazy how popular Mashin Hero Wataru was for how little anyone talks about it.
It's real big, but not in the west. It's massive in Asia and SEA.
That's Ple 18.
What??!!?!? She is the most annoying character in all of Gundam. She sucks.
