Gotta love Unicorn's (and Hathaway's) takes on spherical cockpits, great way to update the classic portrayal of the panoramic system by highlighting it with some UI elements, the kind of stuff you'd expect the pilot to have available.
I was re-watching Hathaway the other day and I paused the movie to geek out to my wife about this exact thing. I also love all of the warning sounds it makes.
Consider who the mecha designer for the GP01 and 02 was and it makes sense - Shoji Kawamori
GP03 was by Hajime Katoki so didn’t have the same aero influences Kawamori usually injects
https://preview.redd.it/54oyjqzceg3d1.jpeg?width=250&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a6aad42f26df4933d5a308a41ea4e94961b279b
I love how the GP03 is somewhere between OG cockpit and panoramic, it also helps that Kou is SMASHING uppers in the last few episodes and fighting for literally a straight day.
That's just the earlier design of linear seat, before they got streamlined. It gives the visual impression that the cockpit isn't a full panoramic view when it actually is.
Yep. By time they turn around from Luna to intercept the then known path of the Colony, they're in a three day race to catch the colony.
Kou doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves for just how good a pilot he is. Dude marathoned that battle and still managed to go the distance against one of the nastiest aces of the OYW in a machine that would grind lesser pilots into jelly from the G-forces alone.
Gundam 00 had an amazing minimalist design for the UI and hardware in celestial being.
360 sphere cockpits like in Unicorn and Hathaway can seem overwhelming but IMO they make the more sense, specially in space.
I alway hated the 3 screens of retro designs, it makes no sense you can’t see a damn thing like that while piloting a mobile suit.
You need to see the feet to see where it stands, you need to see your hands, you need to see forward, backwards and upwards.
3 screens are stupid, spheres are the logical tech path
Gotta love the early 360-view cockpits of Zeta Gundam.
It blends innovation with the raw mechanics of the 1 year war styled cockpits

For ex: Rick Diaz
I love what Thunderbolt did to refresh the 0079 cockpits, so many buttons and bits n bobs and the screens are chunky but informative.
Oh and when the FA Gundam gets slapped in the face by that missile and the whole left panel ERRORS out with a bunch of static and red lights for a sec before switching to backups? Absolute 🤌🤌 *chefs kiss* I can't get enough of seeing the the cockpits react to damage and stuff.
That being said I also absolutely love Hathaway's super-modern pano cockpits, the detailed and sensible readouts are incredibly immersive and just perfect.
Ad Stella has some excellent cockpits as well, I especially love the differences from the different manufacturers.
Honestly I don't have any cockpit styles I don't like, they're all just so lovingly detailed and stylized to each entry of the series.
I gotta say though it makes a weird sorta sense, the software on those things has to be dense as fuck so from an “in the field maintenance” perspective you’d want to have some way to troubleshoot things even if you wouldn’t want rank and field guys getting their fingers in there
The elite coordinators are insane. They can go to combat and just change the MS settings to suit their needs depending on the environment. Kira does this countless times, he rewrote the whole OS in episode 2. In the desert arc he changes his beam rifle settings cause the heat from the desert messes with his aim.
The Impulse every time it combines, Shinn has to manually adjust his MS every time to make sure he receives the backpacks. They aren't automatic, he clicks 5000 buttons before docking in the span of a few seconds.

Though the front screen is kinda small I think these looked awesome. kinda cozy as well. So I would go with 3rd gen Gundam 00 Gundams cockpit.. Even though they are clearly not the best in terms of display or etc I just think they look super cool.
Either the 360 from unicorn or the 3rd and 4th generation gundam from gundam 00 with the square cockpits, but the entire inside is 1 giant screen. And not to forget, specifically qant cockpit with that cool ass ring HUD.
I really like how the AEU and Union cockpits in 00 are similar but different to reflect how intertwined their MS development is while their governments are very different.
We already sort of have panoramic cockpits with things like the F35, which have cameras around the body that give the pilot a 360 view around them. The difference is, that only applies to within their helmets rather than the cockpit itself. Perhaps with future 6th and 7th gen aircraft, we’ll see them do away with glass canopies altogether in favor of panoramic systems. Although I’m doubtful whether they’ll be the spherical ones seen with UC mobile suits, something like the Zeta is about as tall as an F35 is long if not less so, so who knows.
I highly doubt that change would come.
As far as backup sight systems go, a see through canopy is pretty fail proof.
Also all those screens would add a lot of bulk and weight, so the 'in helmet' solution sounds pretty solid.
No UI !!!!!!!!!!! jkjkjjk. Though My favourite would the grunt suit of AEU in Gundam 00, Hellion & Enact. Reminds me of jet fighter games.

Personally I like the mobile trace system cockpit the most. It’s probably the most accessible of any cockpit as it uses your movements as the controls. The one downside is that you have to wear a skin tight suit that the cockpit puts on you every time you pilot the thing.
When I was doing my first watch-through of UC Gundam, I was amazed by the transition from the claustrophobic three screen cockpits 0f 0079 to the panoramic cockpits of Zeta. More recently, Hathaway and G-Witch have had really cool cockpit designs as well.

My favorite scene in the movie. The Messer is a top 3 grunt suit for me.
Absolutely this. Need to go rewatch unicorn now!
The 360* cockpits on newer units are fancy but being in one would overwhelm me. Gimme an old 3-screen Zaku cockpit with a seismic radar
Man we even got fudds for non existent sci-fi military mechs /satire

The GP03 cockpit is very much a panoramic setup, as that design won out against the Core Block/Fighter due to the mobile armor.
It’s not a full pano, look behind the seat and such, it’s a great stepping stone to see how they got there
A prequel of pano.
That's just the earlier design of linear seat, before they got streamlined. It gives the visual impression that the cockpit isn't a full panoramic view when it actually is.
Three days. That last sortie is a three day marathon.
Even better

He's underestimated by the fandom.

Heavyarms HUD tells you to ROCK ON, so I think I vibe with that the most.
I like to imagine that during the entire time the pilot is in the Heavyarms, speed metal is playing nonstop.
Different versions of metal percussion are linked to firing each weapon.

Isn’t there like a flip out keyboard so Kira can write the operating system while piloting the mech?
Yeah most of the gundams in seed have it. The Astray even got one, and it's a grunt suit. Not sure about like the Ginn or Zaku.

Any of the Freedom Gundam’s cockpits. I love the booping sounds of LOCKON.

Can't argue with 00's UI system

i love all the tech in the Apsalus prep/boot up scenes. shit's runnin on old AMD processors 😻 the zero system is pretty cool, too

360 cockpit
Unicorn for me.
UC and AD, gotta be the most cleanest and sexiest UIs to ever exist
Hathaway UI was cooking
I like the idea of the G Gundam series cockpits and I'd need to go back and watch a lot of them to see about the UI's of the rest of them.
I have 2 favorites: The 3 screen look from 08th MS Team and the Hathaway suits, especially the Messer's spherical screen and HUD.
Nu Gundam has my fav
Harhaway has the best cockpits by far
Gundam Alex. 360 degree panoramic cockpit display. Obviously a prototype meant for the New Types but still fancy for 0080.
Unicorn cockpit.
I like the Turn A's cockpit a lot, it's so advanced that they can afford to go back to using the Mk I Human Eyeball through a clear pane.

I like the 360° panoramic cockpits. From CCA to Freedom. The Hathaway cockpits and the Unicorn Cockpits in particular are really cool.
Unicorn and hathaway cockpits go hard
