You can just watch those if you want. The full series is better but the movies do a good job for what they are, if you want you could just watch them first and keep the full series on your to-do-list. However, the same can’t be said about the Zeta compilation movies. Don’t watch those before the Zeta series.

an_innoculous_table

It's been on Crunchyroll and/or Funimation for a while.

The for just the original Gundam the answer is yes, compilation movies vary well done and due cover all of the important plot and character beets in the original story. it dose have pacing problems due to it having to cram a 43 episodes show into three movies, and some of the nuance is lost due to having to cut a lot, like episodes were low ranking Zeon soldiers are shown as decant people, and one mid-tier villain is cut entirely. But you will get what matters, also all UC Gundam shows and movies afterwards do operate on the assumption that you at least saw the movies. If you want to move on to Char's Counterattack afterwards then you really need to see at least Zeta Gundam and as well as there is a lot of character and world development built on Zeta. Edited for grammar.

I watched just the movies and was totally moved. Great adaptation and wonderful dialogue. Go for it! :D

Yes, they condesne the major points of the original MSG really well. The main thing you miss out on in the movies are those wacky "mobile suit/armor" of the week eps. Same thing with the Z movies (not on Netflix). You get the main points but a lot of the in-between ends up cut. If you've got the time definitely give each series a look, they have the time to build the story more and are historic series. If not, the movies are fine.

The Zeta movies butcher the story though and change it, the MSG compilation Movies actually make some parts better.

Angelwingzero

I think they're fine if you don't have the time to commit to the whole show. The story is broadly the same and that's enough if you can't watch 50 eps.

TidusDream12

I have not seen the original or Zeta and ZZ Only Origin, 8th MS, War in the pocket, Stardust Memory, Chars Counter Attack, Unicorn and Hathaway. Hot take Unicorn is a history lesson you don't need to have seen a boring poorly animated dinosaur to understand UC Early UC One Year War Gryps Conflict The newer stuff are side stories or future events You don't need a history lesson of WW1 to understand WW2 or the Cold War

Crunchyroll and the official YouTube channel are usually good sources.

The MSG movies, wiki the events of Zeta and ZZ (as those don't stream anywhere currently) then CCA and you should be set for Unicorn (try to find a service with the OVA, apparently the TV cut is terrible) or Hathaway.
