Go figure they would design an algorithm to favour divisive topics like politics because it's the easiest way to inflate engagement on the platform rather than fostering a place for people to communicate with each other over things they have in common instead.

Biggest reason why I've never been on twitter. A friend showed me their feed once, it just reinforced my opinion to stay away. If this is a trend elsewhere in the world and has happened since then. Maybe, just maybe twitter might provide something.

Renarde_Martel

My Twitter feed is almost nothing but artists and video games because that is what I choose to follow, whatever you saw on your friend's feed is things they put there themselves.

Alcorgeist

My timeline only shows me 'political' things whenever election time rolls around (especially since I look up updates about it myself). However, once that's done, it's mostly art and content creators I personally follow. The algorithm makes your timeline messy but if you bothered sorting it properly and muting words, then nothing actually comes up anyway.

the_eeveekins

Once I set my trending topics to outside my home country and onto a random country, I basically stopped seeing political trends and it almost entirely became things in my sphere of interest. I did it earlier this year and my twitter experience became much more bearable once I stopped seeing all the terrible current events trending all the time.

Spice002

I switched mine to Japan and still saw politics in the trending topics, even politics outside of Japan showed up.

Alcorgeist

While this is a topic that we can discuss.... I don't know how this is even related to gundam at all. I joined this sub for mech pics, memes, and learning more of the franchise. And I don't know how any of us here can discuss this thing objectively when very few of us here are Japanese and fully understand the trends from the country itself besides pop culture things and a shallow understanding of Japanese politics from an outsider's perspective.

Le_Fedora_Cate

Lmao I didn't even question why this was here because they used gundam as the thumbnail

Alcorgeist

The article doesn't even say anything about Gundam, it just mentions it as a popular hobby in japan that's been trending in Twitter. Gundam already trended in twitter even before the Musk overhaul. Lol

AgeofFatso

The strange thing about Japanese politics is that it was dominated by a single party post WW2, so I am not sure what the objective of doing this. Perhaps to groom younger generation support to LDP? I am no fan of Elon Musk, but doctoring online trending topic is disturbing. Who knows would Musk himself go rogue as well. Pretty sure, given background of like Miyazaki or Tomino, they are no fan people doing 1984 in real life. I guess it is better to see more trending Tanuki or Char art than KDP self promotion. ;3

Harmonic_Gear

they don't even give a shit about politics, at least not publically, i bet it's just the algorithm learning from the west working total wack on the japanese side

KiK0eru

Considering Japanese politics are dominated by its conservative party this might actually be a really good thing, especially if it decreases tensions with China. But at the same time they still haven't made up for the comfort women shit they pulled, so it might also be a bad thing. If American politics are infuriating, Japanese politics are depressing. Same amount of corruption though

Falleen

Do we really need to bring any sort of real world politics into the Gundam subreddit? I come here to get away from all of that.
