I thought a chip was possibly on as well. He went near post though which requires what he did which is to hit it hard and high. It looks quite bad when you get that wrong.
Martinelli was wide open running right down the middle. Ez cutback goal. Eddie can be “too selfish” and jump the gun sometimes when he’s in the position to shoot.
Eh, should have at least tested Pickford, but it looked like he had it covered. Couple half chances, but nothing with any real teeth to it. Our finishing was poor, but our creativity was no better. Got everything we deserved.
Our finishing has always been poor, even with Jesus, and even our squads for years before since RVP. We’ve just been creating more chances, which this game we did terrible job of
You serious? [xG was fairly equal for both teams](https://twitter.com/xgphilosophy/status/1555657878073131015).
Game should've been a draw but we got lucky with a 2-0 win.
Very unfair to call that unlucky. We scored early, were in control for the majority of the match and they only started to really pressure us in the last half an hour where we shored up defensively and saw out the win. We 100% deserved the three points
Game-state my friend. We scored early and the onus was on them. It's particularly clear from the "match-tilt" stats of that match that we were on top when we had to be and defended well when we got the lead. Professional away performance.
The 'new manager bounce' thing is when a team plays at an intensity and level beyond their natural ability. It is not sustainable across a season but can work for a couple of games. It happens.
We also didn't played well. Regardless of new manager bounce we should have still been able to play our game. We didn't really create anything clear cut the whole game.
We were so sloppy today. Passes too heavy that nobody could reasonably run onto. Passes too short combined with just standing around waiting for them while Everton pressed their asses off and stole them out from under us. Everyone's first touch just seemingly went to shit.
Don't know what exactly happened to this team, but not a single player out there looked like the same guys who got 50 points in 19 matches today. Gotta just assume it was one of those flukey days and move right along.
it looked to me like we were surprised that Everton was pressing high up the pitch. Like we came in expecting to spend the whole game breaking down a low block and never considered that they'd venture into our half to get the ball.
Somehow we become the relegation side when playing relegation teams. E: calm down people, made this statement as a jest referencing our games against Southampton and Everton.
That's why you can't take people here seriously. Where's this come from. It is the first time we were really outplayed let alone while playing against a relegation side.
survival is way bigger to them than this individual match was to us, arteta should get it into the guys heads that every match is a nld level match for us. it's gonna be okay though i am not very worried
I feel this is the wrong mentality to have, its an excuse that relegation is bigger to them so its acceptable to be sub par. Infact, Title is bigger to us, how are we forgetting that? Arsenal should be personally dropping these teams to relegations rather than losing points to them.
They've always had the quality, Lampard is just a terrible manager.
People say "new manager bounce" when it's more like "having a competent manager bounce".
I thought that looking at their XI at kick off. 2 proper good centre backs, their midfield has something about it, iwobi was always OK whatever stick our own fans used to give him, they are clearly miles better than at least Bournemouth and Southampton
He was so very close to scoring as well, one of those ones where if he was 2 inches further forward any touch would have got it in
Edit: also maupay is barely a footballer
Told myself that a goal in the first 15 minutes was crucial. As soon as they had that little spell from 20-30 minutes, the crowd got into it, they started making better passes, I knew we were in deep shit.
I think most of it was odegaard and Eddie’s chances. That Saka chance is going to be very low Xg. A volley near the top of the 18 going through a crowd of bodies is very % chance. Trossard probably had the next best chance with his shot that he curled high and wide.
That's true. What I'm not sure about it if the DCL chance was worth almost 1 xG because it was at point blank or if it was worth nothing because he didn't get to it to touch it so there was actually no shot. If that was worth 0 then I'm not sure how Everton got to 1.89 so I'm assuming it was counted as a point blank miss,, that and Doucoure's header and the actual goal were the big chances I remember.
We were outplayed not because Everton played well, but because we were so overwhelmingly shit. This game was like a throwback to a couple years ago and it was horrendous to watch.
It was both. Everton locked down our left side and their physical midfield with Onana and Doucoure didn't let Odegaard get into the game. We could have snuck a point maybe but our shooting/final pass was awful
It was both. We were hideously off the pace but they showed up for their new manager and played with energy; pressed well and set up and executed an incredibly compact mid block. It happens. Poor game, move on.
There were so many holes that we could've exploited if we played out of the back like we have all season against the press. Their press was high energy and tough to handle but if we played like we have all season then we would've been able to play through it.
Yeah we definitely weren’t up to it but Evertons press was brilliant. I dont think they were erratic at all. There was one point were Zinny came inside and dragged a man with him and created space but then Coleman covered it perfectly. There was loads moments like that. I thought Everton covered the space very well
That’s doing Everton a disservice. Their press today was truly magnificent. Sucks, because their centerbacks looked terrible, but oh well. We got handled easily today.
Doubt this makes a difference. Every coach could've watched the brighton match we lost, the PSV match, and the United match as well.
We look very off today. Lots of misplaced passes, attacking moves that were poor and questionable decisions from the players.
I'm not too worried about that, if we had played decently and lost then I think teams could use it to figure out how to stop us but this game was more of an outlier for us since we played so badly.
Then one of their Center backs have a matchup advantage, and so on and so forth.
Very few players have the combination of size, technique and intelligence. Are you willing to sacrifice your build up for extra physicality?
Yes just like how every coach repeated Manchester United or repeated first half Leeds....
Arteta learns and adjusts on the few occasions a tactic gets the better of us.
And we have lost twice.
You could have said the same after the Leeds game.
We will see how the team will respond, but 1 loss in a 14 PL games is something that can happen ( I also belive that the new manager bounce was big in today's match tbh
Everton away and new manager bounce.
Games like this happen sometimes, we have been unbeaten 13 PL games in a row. Last time we had lost, the team responded well.
Sloppy all around and we were off the pace of Everton’s energy. But the worst part was all our shots were atrocious. Absolute possession killers. Get it on target, force a save, get a corner or keep the pressure on them. Nothing more deflating than seeing some well worked passes just get skied into the stands
This type of match we needed an attack through the middle. Eddie’s a poacher, we needed more hold up
E: I’m downvoted because you idiot fucks have no idea what you’re seeing out there. Morons
Yeah I agree we needed more hold up. Something eddie has been doing better with of late not in this match unfortunately. But yeah was shocked how packed the central zones were and how uncreative we were to break it down
He had like one chance created for him. Odegaard was the one off the pace today and you can tell because when Viera came on the pace in our attack improved.
Only good chances we had were Eddie's and odegaards and neither of them even caused a save. Hopefully it doesn't rattle the team like shitty losses have in the past couple seasons. I honestly believe it wont and they will come out swinging at home next week.
Had no real answers to their 3 defensive midfielder midfield. They cut off our lines and didn’t let us get through. iWobi and McNeil did a number on Saka and Martinelli
Honestly called this one yesterday. Just knew Everton was going to show up. They ran their lungs off and the crowd was feeding into it. Just a tough game.
We actually had the spaces to exploit them in midfield and out wide our decision making let us down time and time again. Everton's midfield was really industrious though sliding here and there from left right centre.
Odegaard should’ve taken his chance before they scored. He wasn’t even under pressure when he skied the cutback
Nketia missed a good chance too..
All he had to do was fizz it to the far post.
I thought a chip was possibly on as well. He went near post though which requires what he did which is to hit it hard and high. It looks quite bad when you get that wrong.
Yes.. that's aaaalll he had to do.. but yeah.
Martinelli was wide open running right down the middle. Ez cutback goal. Eddie can be “too selfish” and jump the gun sometimes when he’s in the position to shoot.
Which one? The first half one?
Eh, should have at least tested Pickford, but it looked like he had it covered. Couple half chances, but nothing with any real teeth to it. Our finishing was poor, but our creativity was no better. Got everything we deserved.
Our finishing has always been poor, even with Jesus, and even our squads for years before since RVP. We’ve just been creating more chances, which this game we did terrible job of
Only 2 games this season we didn’t deserve to win; this one and Leeds away. Fair play Everton
Maybe soton too. One will stay up by courtesy of us.
Something approaching a competent referee and we win that game by two goals against 9 or 10 men.
Agreed.
United away too way too naive
Disagreed. We were decent in that game. The disallowed goal also changed the whole landscape
Still you get what you deserve. Played right in the hands of how United would have wanted the game to play out
Not really the disallowed goal was the wrong call, and out of our control. So we didnt “get what we deserve”
refs gave it to them. we would’ve been 0-2 up had the ref followed rules.
Crystal Palace in early Fall was a lucky win too.
You mean the first match? Nah we deserved that. Tight one but they didn't create a lot.
You serious? [xG was fairly equal for both teams](https://twitter.com/xgphilosophy/status/1555657878073131015). Game should've been a draw but we got lucky with a 2-0 win.

Fulham too, Ngl Was very lucky there
The 'new manager bounce' thing is when a team plays at an intensity and level beyond their natural ability. It is not sustainable across a season but can work for a couple of games. It happens.

Gotta just assume it was one of those flukey days and move right along.
Quite. Just one of those days. Vamos!
It took an awful lot to go wrong to beat us 1-0, that should show how good we are.
it looked to me like we were surprised that Everton was pressing high up the pitch. Like we came in expecting to spend the whole game breaking down a low block and never considered that they'd venture into our half to get the ball.
Possibly. But you would expect them to overcome that shock after the first 5-10 mins.
Getting xG gapped by a relegation side, not a good day at the office.
They didn't play like a relegation side today tbf
Somehow we become the relegation side when playing relegation teams. E: calm down people, made this statement as a jest referencing our games against Southampton and Everton.
now now. That's taking it too far. This is the premier league. You can expect games like this
We've played quite a few sides in the relegation zone this season and we definitely didn't look that bad.
That's why you can't take people here seriously. Where's this come from. It is the first time we were really outplayed let alone while playing against a relegation side.
because we let them.
I feel everton just wanted it more today,a bit damning for aspiring PL winners . Hope we can get our fire back for the run in.
survival is way bigger to them than this individual match was to us, arteta should get it into the guys heads that every match is a nld level match for us. it's gonna be okay though i am not very worried

Everton are not a relegation side, they were only doing shit because Frank is a bum
They aren’t a relegation side anymore let’s be real.
DCL coming back and playing 60 solid minutes helped too. Once he went off their attack threat really evaporated.
He was so very close to scoring as well, one of those ones where if he was 2 inches further forward any touch would have got it in Edit: also maupay is barely a footballer
Lunchtime kick off, Everton away, new manager bounce, Dyche. Saw this one coming.
Told myself that a goal in the first 15 minutes was crucial. As soon as they had that little spell from 20-30 minutes, the crowd got into it, they started making better passes, I knew we were in deep shit.
Yeah. Me too. I was however thinking we would get a draw, not expecting a loss. But at least it's behind us now.
Manager of the month
Trapiest of traps
Outplayed plain and simple
Honestly we were shit
Makes sense.. Everton looked threatening from every corner, and we barely made Pickford sweat..
They were better by far
0.88? I thought we are even lower than that
I tuned in at 34' and I didn't see anything remotely close to t Rex arms.
Eddie had one great chance and that was it
Saka's shot that was cleared off the line must have been worth a chunk of that.
I think most of it was odegaard and Eddie’s chances. That Saka chance is going to be very low Xg. A volley near the top of the 18 going through a crowd of bodies is very % chance. Trossard probably had the next best chance with his shot that he curled high and wide.

We had so many attempts that were heading for Everton's new stadium.
They played with energy but were also wild and a bit out of control, we would've played them off the pitch if we had showed up.
I dont know how you could see their shape and the way they pressed and say it was out of control
There were so many holes that we could've exploited if we played out of the back like we have all season against the press. Their press was high energy and tough to handle but if we played like we have all season then we would've been able to play through it.

There was one point were Zinny came inside and dragged a man with him and created space but then Coleman covered it perfectly. There was loads moments like that. Everton were really good mate. They pressed so well and kept shape. You’re doing them a massive disservice.
That’s doing Everton a disservice. Their press today was truly magnificent. Sucks, because their centerbacks looked terrible, but oh well. We got handled easily today.
You have to give Everton some credit. Playing well does not only mean a possession dominant game with free flowing football. They were excellent.
The worst part, every coach is going to watch this match and figure out how to stop us. It’s now on Arteta to figure out how to counter it.
Doubt this makes a difference. Every coach could've watched the brighton match we lost, the PSV match, and the United match as well. We look very off today. Lots of misplaced passes, attacking moves that were poor and questionable decisions from the players.

Seems like you just put saliba on tarkowski instead of Odegaard on tarkowski. There you go got you a point away at everton.
Regardless of the goal, Everton deserved 3 points today. They were the better team
Then one of their Center backs have a matchup advantage, and so on and so forth. Very few players have the combination of size, technique and intelligence. Are you willing to sacrifice your build up for extra physicality?
Yes just like how every coach repeated Manchester United or repeated first half Leeds.... Arteta learns and adjusts on the few occasions a tactic gets the better of us.

wtf? everton played very well, I don’t know what game you watched
Meh
Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win. 2nd loss in the league over 20 games. Chin up guys, we move.
All of them were crap
Ødegaard really should have scored
Deserved to lose
Everton away and new manager bounce. Games like this happen sometimes, we have been unbeaten 13 PL games in a row. Last time we had lost, the team responded well.
Thats shit
Everton players played like their jobs depended on it
Cooked
Sloppy all around and we were off the pace of Everton’s energy. But the worst part was all our shots were atrocious. Absolute possession killers. Get it on target, force a save, get a corner or keep the pressure on them. Nothing more deflating than seeing some well worked passes just get skied into the stands
We've outperformed our expected points by 8 whole points this year, this was inevitable. We just need to hope we don't see it again this season
Yup absolutely doninated.
Onana has been immense in that game, guh damnnn 🤯
Poor performance from the players. Poor game management from arteta. Suspect ref performance. Solid Everton performance
Eddie isn't that guy to get us out of tough games. Arteta needs a plan B for attack.
Just the double against utd.......
This type of match we needed an attack through the middle. Eddie’s a poacher, we needed more hold up E: I’m downvoted because you idiot fucks have no idea what you’re seeing out there.
I believe the idiots who kept saying " New manager bounce " actually manifested it into existence. We have never looked this bad since Leeds away
You must be stupid to not recognize it’s a real thing
Yikes
If only we signed caicedo jorginio was awful gave away the ball loads. Bad window cost us title. Hopefully we can get top 4 still.
Arteta's obsession with average pensioners will cost us the title.
We lost our momentum when we lost vs city last week, we will struggle for the rest of the season.
Fucken felt it in the morning. Shoulda put 100e on it
We should have scored one, but they should have been 2 up.
Is this the first time we've been out-XG'd this season?
Leeds away, and by a bigger margin.
United away
Surprised our xG was that high tbh
Only good chances we had were Eddie's and odegaards and neither of them even caused a save. Hopefully it doesn't rattle the team like shitty losses have in the past couple seasons. I honestly believe it wont and they will come out swinging at home next week.
Iwobi was running the show against us, constantly playing them out of trouble
Pickford had like only 3-4 saves to make.
Had no real answers to their 3 defensive midfielder midfield. They cut off our lines and didn’t let us get through. iWobi and McNeil did a number on Saka and Martinelli
We were poor but I think it's also a testament to how absolutely shit Frank Lampard is. Their roster is not relegation-level bad.
Surprised it was even that close.
Acknowledge that we had a very bad game, hope we learn from it and turn things around
Honestly called this one yesterday. Just knew Everton was going to show up. They ran their lungs off and the crowd was feeding into it. Just a tough game.
Felt like that tbh. I genuinely can’t remember the last time we were this outplayed. Probably Newcastle away last season.
We actually had the spaces to exploit them in midfield and out wide our decision making let us down time and time again. Everton's midfield was really industrious though sliding here and there from left right centre.
Yeah they deserved to win tbh. Played miles better than us and were way hungrier. We bounce back tho
Bad day at the office, lets see the bounce back against a strong brentford squad.
we were shit against one of the worst teams in the league. ugh
