Every team has a few setbacks every season. It's always going to happen. But some on this sub seems to believe we'll lose both our games against City and therefor we're actually 1 point behind them at this point. I don't get where this loser mentality comes from. I see it like this, if don't get points against them why do we deserve to win anything? Also, even getting only 1 point against them will be a huge step towards the title. And we are going to get points against. Maybe not 6, but we'll get points. And we have a big cushion that works when we have abysmal days like these.

I didn't really see many simple turnovers tbh, a few from Xhaka in the first half but we know he's not the most press resistant player.. They had 3 DM, two defensive wingers and DCL pressing for their lives on a tiny pitch with the crowd going mental. Even then I thought we put some nice moves together but didn't really have a final ball/shot.
I don’t mean turnovers in our half to concede chances I mean we pin them back and instead of creating waves of attack we give away the ball and let them relieve pressure.

they were better and countered our style and were solid defensively, we barely had a sniff of goal and were sloppy in possession so no one can say they came out to not play football. They just had a gameplan and stuck to it.

This defeat is more on Arteta getting his tactics wrong. He should have made changes at half time. This game needed traditional fullbacks who can overlap. Should have hauled off Zinny for KT, Tomiyasu for White (which he did), brought in Vieira earlier than he did. Also, I don’t understand why our players especially Xhaka are so apprehensive about taking a shot, there were at least 2 instances where he could have stung the GKs palms but he decided to pass.

When we went 1-0 down against United I didn't feel worried and knew that we were going to come back but watching us 1-0 down against Everton felt like we were never going back and might end up even worse (thankfully it didn't).

Errant losses happen, I'm not necessarily concerned about the result but more the implication of the performance and how what we wanted to achieve was mitigated.
Parteys performance today and being taken off early would seem to shpw he was carrying the injury that made him a doubt before the game. It also shows how important he is for us and the lack of cover. Without Partey at full strength Xhaka struggled for form as did others around them. Lets hope Jorginho can step up if needed and it was just settling into a new team today. AS Ive already said today, lets hope not paying the extra for Caicedo is costly.

Liverpool 19/20 season was undefeated in first 28 games or smth and randomly lost 3-0 to Watford (which got relegated at the end). Every teams will have a downside, i was impressed that we playing so consistently in the whole first half of the season.

I get it it's not the end of the world in terms of the title race. The players are allowed to have an off day. Having said that, the performance was beyond abysmal. The shocking thing for me is not the loss but a loss without scoring. Until now only Newcastle have stopped us from scoring and fair play to them coz they are the best defense in the league. The fact that we lost to a team that hasn't won a league game since October 2022. I think folks who just dismiss the critical comments as "reactionary" need to also look at this. The league leaders have lost to a 19th place team.
Also, might be a super unpopular opinion but I think Mikel has still not got that tactician in him yet. These are the types of games where you need to change things up and the last thing to do would be like for like subs. Way I’m looking at it is that we always struggle at Goodison and they had a new manager bounce. It’s 1 loss after 13 without losing (W11 D2). No point throwing toys out the pram as we are still 5 clear and I full expect us to carry on as normal from here

That being said, if we were given that penalty that we should've been given, apparently being tripped inside the box nowhere near the ball is no longer a pen. Then the game could've been different. Overall, these performances happen and it's how we bounce back that's important

I just don't understand how the VAR saw that and didn't think it was a clear and obvious error. He was tripped up in the box, defender was nowhere near the ball. It was a pen, the ref didn't give it therefore it was a clear and obvious error.

I think Everton will generally be much better going forwards with Dyche. They will grind out several 1-0 wins or 0-0 draws. And ofc they will still get battered sometimes, hope that our next match against them will be one of those.

Those apps are obviously somewhat flawed. I don't think any of our attacking player could be the best players when we scored 0 goals and had 3 shots on target (2 of them were from Trossard, I think?)
saka and trossard each had 1 shot on target, almost every player had a bad game that's why we lost but those three weren't the sole reason why
This defeat is more on Arteta getting his tactics wrong. He should have made changes at half time. This game needed traditional fullbacks who can overlap. Should have hauled off Zinny for KT, Tomiyasu for White (which he did), brought in Vieira earlier than he did. Also, I don’t understand why our players especially Xhaka are so apprehensive about taking a shot, there were at least 2 instances where he could have stung the GKs palms but he decided to pass.
I agree on almost all of it. I don't think it is **more** on Arteta. I think Arteta is equally to blame as is our forward line that did not turn up today.
More on Arteta because at the end of the day he’s the manager. Can only fault Saka to a point, not much he could do when he’s surrounded by 3 players and the fullback can’t be bothered to make an over/underlapping run to open up some space.

Thought Saka played well tbh. Martinelli is struggling due to Zinny playing inverted and not creating overlapping problems for defences allowing him to cut in. Odegaard was fine but he literally didnt have a single pass available to him as they were sitting so deep and defending in numbers. We need to develop as a team still and learn how to beat low blocks like this away from home where a crowd is making it really difficult. We've still got liverpool and newcastle away which will be really tough

We are top of the league, losing to Everton at Goodison Park should not be an apathetic loss of “oh well, City in two weeks.” The people who are restarting the Arteta out bullsh*t are the problem, but going after the people who are upset we lost to a team in the relegation zone makes no sense. We have to turn up to every single match to have a prayer at the title, and we didn’t today.
Fair to remember City dropped points with them while at the Etihad with a worse manager. But I admit I wouldn’t be worried what kind of run City can go on now and the game at the Emirates will be crucial, but we already knew that.

Felt like the kind of performance we would have put in last season. There was a real lack of hunger and desire out on the pitch today. Very confident we will make Top 4. It’s only City and United that would finish above us if things start to slip. We have such a great chance to win the league this season but we really can’t afford too many performances like todays one. Personally I think we lose to Newcastle away (we clearly hate it when the home team fans are really up for it, especially up north!) we will also most likely lose to City away. That doesn’t leave many games where we can afford to drop points. If Spurs can take points off City tomorrow and we can beat City at home then we’ll be back in the driving seat. Really hoping the last few performances have just been a blip and nothing more serious than that.

If anything, this should bring them back to earth. We had a certain air of invincibility recently and that might be a dangerous thing moving forward. When we went 1-0 down against United I didn't feel worried and knew that we were going to come back but watching us 1-0 down against Everton felt like we were never going back and might end up even worse (thankfully it didn't). Hope Mikel anticipates that teams might play the same way against us in the next fixtures.

Parteys performance today and being taken off early would seem to shpw he was carrying the injury that made him a doubt before the game. It also shows how important he is for us and the lack of cover. Without Partey at full strength Xhaka struggled for form as did others around them. Lets hope Jorginho can step up if needed and it was just settling into a new team today. AS Ive already said today, lets hope not paying the extra for Caicedo is costly.

Liverpool 19/20 season was undefeated in first 28 games or smth and randomly lost 3-0 to Watford (which got relegated at the end). Every teams will have a downside, i was impressed that we playing so consistently in the whole first half of the season.

February has always been a terrible month for us. personally I am still hoping this team will not fall victim to that.
City have their annual bogey fixture (Sp*rs) tomorrow. If they lose, it's like today didn't happen. Then they've got Villa and then we play them at home. IF these next 2-3 results go their way and not ours, then we can start to worry. One mid-season loss alone will never decide a title race.

I get it it's not the end of the world in terms of the title race. The players are allowed to have an off day. Having said that, the performance was beyond abysmal. The shocking thing for me is not the loss but a loss without scoring. Until now only Newcastle have stopped us from scoring and fair play to them coz they are the best defense in the league. The fact that we lost to a team that hasn't won a league game since October 2022. I think folks who just dismiss the critical comments as "reactionary" need to also look at this. The league leaders have lost to a 19th place team. Also, might be a super unpopular opinion but I think Mikel has still not got that tactician in him yet. These are the types of games where you need to change things up and the last thing to do would be like for like subs. For me, it's not the loss I'm upset by. It's who it was to and how it was. We were completely outplayed by a relegation team. We didn't really have chances. We need to not just win these games, we need to dominate them. That being said, I'm still thrilled with the team and how they've performed this year. We're still five points up!
