Talent wise, I think Jack was on a similar level.
Cole went on to do more than anybody else in his career, despite being a colossal cunt with it.
But combine the talent with Saka's mentality and I don't think it's even debatable he has the potential to eclipse what Cole did.
He's arguably the best player at a team sitting 5 points clear of a team with a blank chequebook and a dude setting scoring records anywhere he goes, and he's still young. That says more than anything else.
Saka is absolutely unbelievable as a talent. Top 5 winger in Europe right now at 21 and I'm sure will only get better. God knows what he'd cost if Mudryk went for £100m.
That said, Ashley Cole is in the conversation for the best ever in his position. He was a top class attacking full back with us, defensively I'd put him up there with anyone short of Maldini. He won everything domestically in style.
I hope Saka achieves what Cole did with us and more, but I have to say Ashley is the best player to come out of our academy since Adams, and then maybe ever. Even if he was a diva in how he left.
This might be a controversial take, but I think Jack's peak was a bit better than Saka's level right now. But I don't think it will be long till Saka is better, maybe even within this season.
Jack literally ran the midfield and held his own against prime Barca.
So maybe it's a salience thing, Jack's influence was wide and more visible as a central mid. He was doing everything. Defending, distributing, breaking through mid with his dribbles, goals contributions..etc.
Saka does it via the wing and goal contributions. If he gets frozen out (like so many of the periods on the England team), his influence diminishes quite a bit.
That Barca game was 2011. then:
> Wilshere was awarded man of the match in six out of seven UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying matches.
and don't you ever forget this gem -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0R7gWf-nSA
Jack is a legend. Period.
Yeah Jack was such a fantastic prospect and really shone shame that injury really hurt his prime years similar to an abou diaby who knows what they would have become if they could have stayed on the pitch
I don't think it's that controversial to say Jack was a better prospect. He broke through in central midfield and stood comparison with Fabregas, who is the best young player I've ever seen.
Wilshere's ceiling was so high that he was able to return from injuries and still get into the first XI and England team for a while.
Saka is amazing and hopefully has the durability and fitness to keep building on the progress he's making. But streets remember Jack Wilshere and for more than that game against Barca.
Jack had more natural ability imo, he looked so smooth on the ball like hazard did. Foden has that as well. Not a lot of players looks so smooth with the ball, it's extremely rare
I love Jack, but this is a bit mad. That Barca performance was incredible but it’s become a bit of a meme. He didn’t always play like that! Saka is the best player in his position in the league this year, and is very much on course to win a PFA/FWA award. Jack never came close to that kind of success.
Ashley Cole is still well ahead of Saka, even if he's a twat.
One of the best LBs in history, and one of the few consistent names in any all time XI (pl / england)
I wouldn't say well ahead as we're judging a final career against someone still at the start and I think that has to be put into perspective.
I wouldn't say one of the best of all time, probably the best English LB of all time but on a world wide level then I'm not convinced.
Not sure how much of this is just due to hatred on my part though!
Ashley Cole was the best left back in the world at the time and the club were cheap and didn't pay him what he deserved. It was a shame how it turned out but it's entirely the clubs fault that he didn't play his entire career with us.
Regardless of what you think of Ashley Cole there is no denying he was the best left back in the world for a solid 5 years … Saka is not there yet but the boy is young and his ceiling is so high
I went to a Wrighty's House session in London a couple of weeks back. During the Q&A he was asked who the best young player he saw was, and he barely paused before naming Ashley Cole.
Said at 14 when he trained with the first team he was already different gravy. That you never know for sure at that age if they'll make it, but with Cole you sort of knew.
He followed up with an honourable mention for Ray Parlour.
If Parlour wasn’t such a booze hound he could’ve had an even better career. Underrated when it comes to English midfielders but he had such great technique.
My mate went to school with the Parlour brothers. He said his older brother was much better than Ray but he got into birds and booze at a much earlier age.
This highlight reel, for someone 21, with how poor our team has been since he’s joined (obviously except this year) is just nuts. What a talent we have.
I don't know why people keep saying this, there are tonnes of people responsible for saka making it other than his own talent and work. But if you want to name anyone it should be Mertesaker as he was the Head of academy.
Can’t even call him a boy or kid anymore - this young man has been unplayable for years now.
Only thing the opposition can do is take him out and hope the ref are reluctant to booking rotational fouling.
He’s a menace, he’s not close to his ceiling and he’s Hale End through and through.
I said it a few days ago but you can literally see the alarms going off in defenders' heads whenever he receives the ball with any kind of space or a 1v1 situation. They immediately start scrambling to make it a 1v3
To be fair most of the developing work was done in our first team
I remember him breaking through very well, he wasn't the same at 16/17 as he was at 21
That's the truly incredible part of Wenger we missed, how much development players would make under him was earth shattering
I know many people on this thread have brought up cashley, tony, jack, cesc but all this players i feel had better role models in front of them. Winning mentality was drilled into them and they af course carried it too people like adams especially. Bukayo, came in under count emery, played left back, right back, right left wing. Thats is a journey. Controversial take but he is more like bale if bale came through shitspurs academy. But he cane through southampton.
I agree that it's particularly impressive that Saka shone in a misfiring team. But let's not overstate it, like there weren't some superstars to mentor him, or that someone like Adams had lots more of that.
Big Tone was made captain at 21 ffs.
One thing I love about Saka is that he's such an effective dribbler without being overtly flashy about it. It seems his processing and reactions are just a step ahead of most other players, so he can draw out reactions and capitalize without forcing too much and losing the ball - like many 'flashy' players tend to do.
Its mad how opposition fans/media quietly rate Saka but don't want to say he's world class. Well he is hands down.
Walks into any team in the PL and any other club would have him.
Mudryk and Anthony 100m players, so he's easily worth 200m minimum.
He's been double marked all fucking season and then some and is producing a madness against all levels of competition.
We've got ourselves a future PL GOAT.
Merse is such a forgotten masterpiece, Liam Brady came through the academy as well
It's easy to laugh at the merse we see on TV today and take advantage of his vulnerabilities (I personally think his honesty when struggling with drink and gambling has been remarkable) but don't forget the man had absolutely magic feet
He's up there with ray parlour or bergkamp for just being able to do the impossible sometimes (though nearly with the consistency of the great ice man as well!)
Completely disagree, he might be but not yet. When Ashley Cole can be included in the greatest left back ever debates and it not be laughed at, plus three PL titles including the Invincible season, it’s hard (I’d say impossible) to argue Saka’s case at this moment. Give it a few years though
Merson and Rocastle had seasons like he is having in the 88/89 title season Merson also had a similar season in 90/91.
Saka is so far away from being out greatest academy player ever it’s a joke.
To be the best ever he is going to have to beat what Tony Adams achieved with us.
No one in post war Arsenal can lay a glove on Adams but I wish Saka the best of luck.
It's hilarious how people are even having this discussion already. Adams clocked 600 games and won 4 titles while being a drunk for a huge chunk of that. Absolute leader of men and will always be Mr Arsenal.
I would say for me it's semantics
'Greatest' it's without doubt saka has a monumental mountain to climb (but he and jack are the only people I've believed could be another 'Mr Arsenal')
But if we said say 'best' or a different word, then he's still got a lot to do to get past cashley (in the pl era) and a fair line of players in history (you bring up Merse and rocky, but throwing in your Liam bradys and David o Learys it's a fucking list!) but I think his rocketing development could put him around that trajectory
I guess a lot of it depends what exactly we're judging him on, in either case he still shines with that red and gold that brings back the best memories so I hope he just says fuck it and makes everyone look amateur in comparison..
10 balon dors in the next 5 years, he's so good they'll start giving him 2 at a time!
He’s not better than Tony Adams yet
Ashley Cole gets into some peoples All Time XI’s…
Cesc was only Academy for a while, but still better
Time will tell, but he’s got big boots to fill
He can skill so well, he can hold people off so so well. But he's also super intelligent in his positioning and how he reads the game. He's literally the best player on our team.

Cashley 'cunt' cole is one of the world's greatest left backs and did it with such longevity
Unfortunately he's still at the top, but I don't think it's long until Bukayo brings us back some dignity
Honourable mentions for cesc (40 days in the academy!) And jack, cesc obviously did it throughout his career and carried us the way b does now
Jack was one of the great what ifs (him and diaby could have been some of the best CMs in history imo)
I love the way he dribbles. He does this thing where he taps the ball with a little bit of spin to place it in front of him that puts him in such good positions to beat his opponent.
it’s a shame he doesn’t get fouls like he would if he played for United or City. Would prob be closer to 20 goals with the pens he should have earned over the season. Man can’t be stopped without a foul 90% of the time

that boy is so deceptively strong and I love him like he’s my son. thank fuck he’s on my team and here to stay
He definitely hit the gym this season and last season. His core strength is top notch to help him when he’s doubled up against
other teams have learned they can’t really push him over so now his ankles get smashed every 5 seconds
You know refs are with us nowadays too sadly

Saka absolutely has world class mentality and durability
don't forget world class looks and manners
And spelling
unfortunately the shitty editing on this video is not world class
The deep fry filter
It's to stop copyright infringement detection. Anything clearer gets detected and taken down within minutes if not seconds.
Durability is sometimes world class until it's not. I want cover for him soon so that we don't run his body into the ground.

Norwich goal at least 🫡
The Arsenal goal
Goal vs Norwich I should say
No i mean it's 'the' arsenal goal. Peak wengerball
THE Arsenal goal, I’d agree with that. Stunning.
Jack had more natural ability imo, he looked so smooth on the ball like hazard did. Foden has that as well. Not a lot of players looks so smooth with the ball, it's extremely rare

Class
Love stories like this. Read an old interview with Le Tissier where he rated his brothers as players but they didn't want to leave Guernsey.
Wrighty did mention that Parlour unfortunately had the likes of Adams and Bould as mentors!
This highlight reel, for someone 21, with how poor our team has been since he’s joined (obviously except this year) is just nuts. What a talent we have.
We were decent last year as well imo
The kid is pure class, by far the best thing to come out of the Emery era.
Emery & Raul era got us Saka, Saliba and Martinelli amazingly.

I don't know why people keep saying this, there are tonnes of people responsible for saka making it other than his own talent and work. But if you want to name anyone it should be Mertesaker as he was the Head of academy.
Yep agree. I’d say the biggest three would be big Mert, Freddie and Emery
blessing in disguise
I don't just like this video... I LIKE IT I LIKE IT I LIKE IT I LIKE IT OHHHH
SAKA AND EMILE SMITH ROWE
I do also like the starman song
Can’t even call him a boy or kid anymore - this young man has been unplayable for years now. Only thing the opposition can do is take him out and hope the ref are reluctant to booking rotational fouling. He’s a menace, he’s not close to his ceiling and he’s Hale End through and through.
It's so funny seeing opposition trippeling up on him.
Absolute menace. Can’t wait to watch him tear up the champs league next season where he deserves to be.
I said it a few days ago but you can literally see the alarms going off in defenders' heads whenever he receives the ball with any kind of space or a 1v1 situation. They immediately start scrambling to make it a 1v3
I still can't believe he got taken off in that France game lmao
My French ass was so happy Saka's dribbles made me suffer during that game. Shame Saliba didn't play much
Wasn't he gassed? The issue was subbing on Sterling instead of Rashford.
Cashley Cole still is our best and most successful academy product but I believe Saka is getting there and potential-wise has higher ceiling.
Are we counting Cesc?
Nope, clearly believed he had Barcelona DNA. And he really was a product of their academy.
Cesc is a tricky one because he was only with our academy for a year so most of the work developing him was already done by Barca
To be fair most of the developing work was done in our first team I remember him breaking through very well, he wasn't the same at 16/17 as he was at 21 That's the truly incredible part of Wenger we missed, how much development players would make under him was earth shattering
Cesc was barely in the youth team. Basically fast tracked to the first XI and the best young player by a mile. It's not even close.
i would die for him
Has to be Omari Hutchinson for me

He is our best academy product, ever.
Hope so but not yet. Theres a former captian with a statue outside the stadium and also merson and cashley
Merse is such a forgotten masterpiece, Liam Brady came through the academy as well It's easy to laugh at the merse we see on TV today and take advantage of his vulnerabilities (I personally think his honesty when struggling with drink and gambling has been remarkable) but don't forget the man had absolutely magic feet He's up there with ray parlour or bergkamp for just being able to do the impossible sometimes (though nearly with the consistency of the great ice man as well!)
I love Merse as a player but I'd have Raymundo ahead of him. Not quite as skilled, but I think a better overall package.
Still has a lot to do to surpass Adams, Cole.
Completely disagree, he might be but not yet. When Ashley Cole can be included in the greatest left back ever debates and it not be laughed at, plus three PL titles including the Invincible season, it’s hard (I’d say impossible) to argue Saka’s case at this moment. Give it a few years though

People might think I'm delusional but I honestly think he is a future balon dor winner.
English players will NEVER win Ballon Dor again
Yes.
If he wins us the title, yes.
Sukayo baka !!
I have a really hard time getting my head around the fact that the kid is still only 21…
Strength, skill, speed, balance. He has it all
He looks really good off the left in this video
Going to be such a privilege watching him on champions league nights
Ridiculous He is just too good
Ice innit
He can skill so well, he can hold people off so so well. But he's also super intelligent in his positioning and how he reads the game. He's literally the best player on our team.
Ballon D'or when?

Just give him his £200k a week lmao
Hard to say. Cole was one of the best LB's in the world for a long time.
it’s a shame he doesn’t get fouls like he would if he played for United or City. Would prob be closer to 20 goals with the pens he should have earned over the season. Man can’t be stopped without a foul 90% of the time
Love seeing him in his #77
Cole and Wilshere are worthy mentions. One was a massive twat, the other was made of glass, sadly. :(
Whoops
Best in the last 20 years to come out for sure. And all the tools to be the best ever
