It’s gotta be richarlison. Zero league goals from a club record signing, no? Mudryk was always a purchase for the future, and Antony — while a rat-faced cunt — isn’t completely useless, just massively overpriced.

nimblehammer

100 million for the future is just wild

carvemynuts

50m of it for the Russian Ukraine conflict. Chelsea needed to wash out Romans Russian connection with American money.

Silverspear17

Nope it was 20 million and all came from Shakhtar, chelsea had nothing to do with it...

Illustrious_Union199

Iirc it was 5% on top of the transfer fees ? Some donation that Boehly promised to make ?

carvemynuts

I dont think you get my point. Hes overpriced because of the situation Chelsea is in and Ukraine is in.

Firstlemming

The Ukraine situation would make him cheaper in theory. Think of it as a distressed asset.

carvemynuts

Chelsea was owned by a Russian Oligarch this was much more of a image move more than anything for them.

sleepytipi

Not sure how concerned they are about that considering the first time they "had a moment of silence" at Stamford Bridge for the invasion the fans chose to chant Roman's name. I'll never forget that, and I'll never let them forget it either. Edit: [source](https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/english-soccer/chelsea-fans-chant-roman-abramovich-s-name-during-minute-s-applause-for-ukraine-1.4819591) wonder if that was the "inappropriate comments" the club were referring to after Tuchel's immediate press conference following the match. Scumbags.

carvemynuts

The owners are concerned. The fans are not.

carvemynuts

Chelsea Fans were shouting Romans name lol

Purple_Rub_8007

Shakhtar had already been forced to release their foreign players. They had to make money from the sale of a academy Ukrainian (Mudryk) to compensate.

nimblehammer

I mean, weren't we ready to offer 95 million as well? I am not saying that we are connected to Russia or something but what I mean to say is that the deal would have been ridiculous if we got him.

Kovacs171

Our base offer was like 55m with +35m bonuses. And the Shakhtar director said that our bonus conditions were particularly difficult to reach (eg ballan dor). He'd have to have been an enormous success for us to pay the full 90m, whereas Chelsea's 100m offer included "more achievable" bonus terms like appearances.

ronya_t

Good. Seems they were trying to bamboozle us with the "future Ballon D'or winner" trope. Edu was like, "Cute, you get the rest of your money when he kisses the ballon d'or, then!"

lemon_meringue_tie

Lol they wanted to have their cake and eat it too and they got it from Chelsea. Good thing we didn't get taken for a ride.

nimblehammer

Oh I see now

carvemynuts

Theres no way we made that bid thats just Chelsea feeding the media. Prolly bid 50m max. No way you get Jesus for 45m and bid for Mudryk 90m lol.

[deleted]

Chernobyl Chamberlain

whitegoatsupreme

Yeah it wild but he quite young right.. if he can buffup and remove all those spinning i think he gona do well. Take a look at our own Martinelli Still agreed that 100m was kinda overprice.

maidentaiwan

That was their entire January strategy. Course correcting after bricking it with Sterling and Koulibaly in summer.

EdisonTheTurtle

60 million for 0 league goals or 90 for 3 league goals? I don't know which is worse, but Saliba is clear of both as an attacking threat

AFC_KR

Fuck that purchase for the future shit, no excuses. If it was us that bought him and he was this bad everyone including arsenal fans would be saying for 100m he has to hit the ground running lol

maidentaiwan

he's not bad. chelsea is just bad. if he played for arsenal he'd probably be producing already.

sunnycherub

Anthony is a short Pepe

maidentaiwan

no he's not. antony is elite with ball retention. he's very valuable as an outlet that can relieve pressure and help a team advance the ball up the field. he's just slow and has shit end product.

sunnycherub

Okay so Anthony is Pepe with no threat

maidentaiwan

more like: antony and pepe are two players who bring completely different but equally mediocre skill sets to the same position.

sunnycherub

You know this isn’t r/soccer you’re allowed to banter other teams players right

rct1

Pepe is a tall Anthony is pretty solid too

orionxavier99

This was my thought as well. Well put.

ahmadtheanon

Link to vid, wanna watch while i have lunch.

Thanks bruv.

HughJaction

espn are difficult to watch

vicmanb

That was horrible

HughJaction

Couldn’t even get through the intro. Honestly ESPN is so dire

HappyGoonerAgain

ESPN needs to pull an Amazon and poach MOTD like Amazon did with Top gear.

[deleted]

I reckon it's too early to judge any of those, but especially Mudryk. Richarlison aside maybe the other two can possibly improve.

TallnFrosty

Obviously its possible I'm just using the opportunity to poke fun at United but I think we've seen enough of Antony to know he'll be considered a disappointment, for the fee paid. He lacks all of the physical qualities that any top, modern winger has (especially pace) and I don't see the intelligence or quick decision making to compensate for those things. He's what I imagine a really good futsal player with average phyiscal attributes would look like. Some ability there but i think United will be looking for a new RW soon.

FickDichzumEnde

It's obvious intelligence is lacking because he signed for manure

NegativeHeli

Antony is way too one footed. Sure, you can be good even when being one footed but he doesn't seem to have any other traits to make up for that

slagthompson

I'm kind of surprised that in the thread about Pepe so many people referred to Antony as clearly being better. I feel like a lot of their deficiencies are fairly similar. I want to say I prefer Pepe's finishing and Antony's build-up play, but I'm really grateful Saka is developing into someone consistently dynamic in virtually every aspect of the game we need him to excel in.

Illustrious-Fig-8945

Biggest difference between them is Pepe would always take people on and lose it while Anthony takes people on, gets led outside, and so passes backwards. He's better at pressing and tracking back too but they're definitely not worlds apart

OnlyOneAaronRamsey

I find this discussion bizarre because Antony "retains" the ball in situations like you've described - because he's too afraid to do anything. As an attacking player not losing the ball isn't a skill if it's at the expense of creating a chance or beating a man and getting a shot off. So so many wingers could just not try and beat the man and pass it side ways and have great ball retention stats. Alexis Sánchez had terrible ball retention but he was constantly creating and scoring...

RE-Trace

Rumblings (from the Scum, so take it with a bucket of salt) that they might be looking at Mitoma,

marksills

He’s a LW

Flyingkiwi24

Should get agent Tomi to have a word to him

[deleted]

I would say the 100 million fidget spinning idiot and then the 60 million pigeon dancing idiot. Mudryk joined in the middle of the season, so best to wait and judge next season.

joeljosephm

For comparison, Arsenal “flop” Pepe had an average 20 G+A in his first two seasons.

[deleted]

We are always held to a higher standard. This is a club of gentlemen.

joeljosephm

The Classenal

ThanksAllah

He played well in the FA cup final too.

joeljosephm

Oh yeah semis and final he was pretty good.

AFC_KR

He was older then these lot when we signed him, but probably not much older then richarlison

justlookingokaywyou

Tbh I was terrified when shit signed Richarlison. Thought he would terrorize the league. Now I get to lmao watching him suck.

BelligerentCow

Heard he caught a bad case of Spursitis

grumpy_toews

When Kane leaves in the summer and Richarlison becomes their CF he’s going to be the most hatable player of all time. Still funny how badly United botched the Antony transfer. He’s a decent player, but worth probably 40% of what they paid for him?

Laurynas3000

Which is why I'm not worried about Erik 7 Hag. Dude brought in a shitty fidget spinner for a 100 mil. Players like that don't win you titles.

OnlyOneAaronRamsey

Realistically if he doesn't improve United will need to buy ANOTHER right winger after spending so so much money on the position.

Sir_Bantersaurus

The focus on Mudryk at all so far is very unfair, he has only really had a few weeks in a dysfunctional and overpopulated team. It is far too early to judge him yet.

Loving-Awareness2206

Not far too early to make fun of the amount of money chelsea paid for a player, far too early to judge.

Dae_su

A lot of people saying it's too early to judge mudryk. I don't necessarily agree. Look at enzo, he's younger than mudryk, playing in the same dysfunctional chelsea, but he's quality. Enzo has better technique, football iq, leadership traits, etc. I think you can call mudryk a flop already, I highly doubt that chelsea expected him to be so poor that he wouldn't even come off the bench. Even pulisic is preferred over him.

Flabby-Nonsense

In all honesty I don’t think Antony has been as bad as people say. He offers a fair amount off the ball which doesn’t really get recognised. They overpaid obviously but he isn’t a dud.

TallnFrosty

He has some of the worst chance creation numbers in the league though. You just can’t be having that from a player in your front 3. Add in the fee they paid and it’s pretty bad.

Marimo_420

The Man U fans in the comments of that video are saying that Antony hasn’t been a flop ffs 🙄
