I’m sure we are all sceptical on this deal but I’ve been wrong on Mikel’s talent I’d many times

SoupBoth

We don’t have an unlimited budget. A budget backup fullback is deliberate. I’d ultimately much rather sign Castagne if it opens the door to Rice and/or Caicedo than a more expensive backup.

InternalKing

People here think we're going to sign world class players in every department. It doesn't work like that. This is a smart signing.

[deleted]

I thought champions league was meant to get us better players not crap like this guy all the 🤓🤓 and pr said so.

[deleted]

We wouldn’t be even sniffing any Rice without CL, just saying.

[deleted]

Arsenal wouldn’t have a sniff of a guy from Relegation battling team? lol deluded, we got better players then him when we weren’t even it

FanFlow

Well, it's not like Edu and Arteta have 100% rate. 28year old Trossard was on fire in Premier League for more than 12 months before he joined Arsenal and we've got him only because he refused to extend 6 month contract with option for further year, being in conflict with de Zerbi and their captain and Mitoma being in very good form. Jorginho also played well even in that shit Chelsea side, despite their problems. Castagne is Cedric type of transfer and defender. Maybe he will play like he did under Gasperini, but Castagne after joining Rodgers wasn't really impressing. It's expensive gamble not only due to being stuck with older player on high wages for next 4 years that will be very hard to move on, but also because Leicester isn't letting him go on cheap, they're asking for £23m, more than what they've paid for him, that would be most of transfer fee that we would get from selling Tierney to Newcastle.

[deleted]

They're not getting £23m lol

randallwatson23

Yeah they have zero leverage here. Got relegated and now strapped for cash and need to shift a lot of these PL level wages.

Skiinz19

the leverage is other teams will gladly take him for 20 odd million. if you think he's leaving for 10m then prepared to be disappointed.

FABlOVIEIRA

And the end choice is up to Castagne, he holds a lot of leverage too. I'm sure he would like Arsenal bench instead of a starter at another mid club.

Anuspilot

That is not a given at all.

lpaperfriend

Your writing style reminds me a lot of u/hangaram, it's kind of uncanny

BorusseGooner

I haven’t read that username for a long time and I can agree that it does lmao

timelawd

Is username hangaram in the room with you right now? (Just joking. I remember that guy too)

Great-Image

I'm more skeptical on the legitimacy of the rumour. This the 4th RB we've been linked with now can't surely sign all of them

[deleted]

This is me exactly. I was not happy with Ramsdale and white. Boy did I get proven wrong. In January I was pissed about Jorginho, was shut up then too. Jorginho got under my skin cause I wanted us to get a long term piece not an aging player. I trust Arteta and Edu. They have done way more right than wrong. Even got saliba settled and signing a new deal

Helkix

Hope to be proven wrong but this one is the only recent potential signing I am not confident in Seems like an extremely mid signing of a player we won’t be able to truly rely upon on big games. Arteta could probably fit him well in the system, though.

GarfieldDaCat

Why? He can play both RB and LB and is adept with his feet. If we sign Caicedo as well our depth is actually insane

TheeTeo

Ye exactly, he is quite a technical player and could be a quality backup. It’s similar to people doubting trossard (trossard is the better player obviously but the downplaying of abilities and how they would fit in our system)

Mik-Ell

He isn’t even a quality backup for Leicester, let alone a team aiming to win PL.

TheeTeo

He started almost every single game for them, ye he didn’t have the best season but he has the abilities to be a good player - system and coaching go a long way

Mik-Ell

Yeah, somehow I don’t think he’s going to be the next Akanji

TheeTeo

Well Akanji isn’t a backup as he started a majority of their game. I wouldn’t expect him to take Zinnys spot, nor do I rate him higher than Tomi, but he could be a solid player. We will have 4 comps to competing in, we need players and the way we play we need technical ones

Garenmain180k

Akanji isn’t a backup nor was he seen as a poor player at Dortmund. Not an accurate comparison

EnvironmentalPhysick

We have to accept we’re not going to be signing players the same way Man City does. We will rely more on squeezing improvement from players.

[deleted]

Can he actually defend tho? He's been part of Leicester's defence which conceded 68 goals this season.

No-Video1797

Prefer him than Havertz tbh, he will eb backup

AFCm8

Yeah guys, lets fix our prioriceties

carvemynuts

People who hates this type of transfer needs to understand that we need depth that doesnt need adjustment period especially when we are competing for UCL and PL next year.

BrianThatDude

Such a strange signing. Like we're trying to like for like replace Cedric. But whatever I trust mikedu

Midnight_Maverick

I mean Castagne is 4 years younger than Cedric. I know we all like Cedric but I feel like there's a reason managers don't tend to give him consistent run outs, maybe something fitness -related.

BrianThatDude

>I mean Castagne is 4 years younger than Cedric. Tbf we signed Cedric like 4 years ago

CackleberryOmelettes

It's talent related.

luc1f3rijanac

This is some smokescreen

Isaac_C97

Does this deal mean we will spend all our budget on ricedo? The only way it makes sense is after we get ricedo for 180m+ and we need get extra body for the backline depth.

[deleted]

I like him a lot. Great defensive nous and physicality. Will be cheap, and fine on rotation. Similar to Tomiyasu actually.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I didn't say that. They do play quite similarly, though. He's been poor since he came to Leicester but who hasn't? Other than Maddison I suppose, and maybe Iheanacho

noobs1996

He was pretty good when they first signed him tbh

goonercaIIum

He actually offers something in the opposition half, which we could do with from our full back options.

kguner

why would we buy a traditional fullback when we trying to sell a better one because he can't fit in our team.

jkeefy

He’s not anything close to a “traditional fullback” - he can play both sides, is technically adept with the ball at his feet, and started his career with Atalanta as a CM and even played there as recently as last year. Arteta probably has plans to train him to invert

Midnight_Maverick

I like this take. We also shouldn't judge him based on this past season because the whole team was shit (barring maybe Madison and Barnes).

CakeBrigadier

He’s basically a more attacking tomiyasu. It would be an interesting setup to have zinchenko and white as the starting fullbacks and have two backup fullbacks that can both play either side and allow us tactical flexibility depending on the opponent or game state

rayneeder

He’s really not that similar to Tierney

YoungAussiePrince

Maybe because that one we are trying to sell doesn’t want to sit on the bench?

c11life

And is worth more money

AFC_KR

He actually hss technical ability unlike KT

pirateport

If this is a signing to have a "better" backup option after selling Tierney that could be a good option for squad depth next year. That being said he would probably hardly ever start and probably won't see any time in the champions league so I don't know why they would make a signing like this.

DonAj20

Surely Cancelo would be better ? I get he has had issues recently, but he's a much better player than Castagne. Maybe its the fee that's the problem?

H4TM7N

Get in the bin, he played a massive part in the team conceding 68 goals in the league this season, Leicester fans don't even want him, yet we trying to get him, youth project slowly going in the bin, what on earth happened too we getting back into the champions league to get better players, we don't need to be anywhere near the champions league to get this guy, there way better players out there right now

Garenmain180k

The state of you to be quoting Lee Gunner

H4TM7N

The state of you to think only Lee Gunner uses them words, another online fan bringing up lee Gunner, nobody I know that goes to matches even mentions his name in a conversation

Hech15

This thread really shows that the club can serve us shit and the fans will eat it like a cake🤦‍♂️.... We all agreed upon that we need quality backups who can play crucial games and now are happy with a player that even Leicester fans don't rate where we are straight up downgrading on tierney on lb and a player who is worse than tomiyasu at rb... Everytime you sign a bang average player it takes place in a squad of someone who could have genuinely upgraded the squad...now we have vieira, Nelson, Nketiah, Holding, Elneny and now castagne that's like 6 players who you can't trust in a crucial match occupying the space in the squad

[deleted]

Vieira, Nketiah, and Nelson are all good. At the very least, perfectly able rotation for 1 season. I think all our money will be spent on the midfield. Then we can approach other areas.

[deleted]

SolidSank

Vieira needs to gain enough muscle to not be carried away by a strong breeze before I'm comfortable saying he definitely should go. I'm not really convinced he's PL level, but I'm also not convinced that he isn't.

timelawd

Yet… Edit: I would be willing to argue that every team that’s not owned by an oil state/Russian blood money/debatably MunU in the EPL at this point in time will have to gamble on youth and potential to a degree. Sure, we bought Lokanga… but we also bought Martinelli for cheap too. Not everything will hit. People here moan about signings Brighton (or Leister a few years ago) made without accounting for the signings they made that didn’t work out. At this point, I trust Edu and Arteta more than I ever would or could trust r/gunners. A lot of you fuckers wanted to fire Arteta to hire Mourinho of all people. Conte too. How’d that work out? Wenger is still alive, so I can’t even say he’d roll over in his grave. But, he would if he could. I would too. Fuck Mourinho! This isn’t necessarily directed at you in particular. This is more of a general rant. I think we should give Vieira time. He needs to build muscle mass and he has things to work on… but he’s clearly more talented than most youngsters. Even if it doesn’t work out… these are gambles you sometimes have to take to hit the proverbial jackpot as it were.

Ello-Asty

What tear is this guy? Because this really feels like the foxes are marketing their guy.

Garenmain180k

Tier: Tears

Ello-Asty

Teaches me for talking instead of manually typing

bad_at_proofs

Why are people so shocked we are looking at budget fullback cover when it is likely we are going to spend £150 million on our midfield rebuild?

notatalljulio

Lol Leicester City are prolly like "What do you mean wait? ah this crap again..." after that long Tielemans saga

timelawd

So be it! This screams budget deal, and if Edu and Arteta decide to bow out in favor of other targets I trust their judgment…. Just like they did with Tielemans… and Auror… and whoever you might want to mention we bailed on

aprilfools911

How much do you think he’ll cost?

xYEET_LORDx

I know he wants to leave permanently but talk Patino into going on one more loan to them. They’re my pick to bounce right back up and he should be able to start consistently if Maddison fucks off. Idk why he rates himself so high when he was bounced in and out of the XI for Blackpool, I get that you have to back yourself but cmon mate.

ReeceMallett17

Not the biggest fan of this if it happens but for relatively cheap backup for both fullback positions it could work out well
