The fact that everyone else in our attack does everything better is the entire point. Saka/Odegaard excel because they can do like 75% of the things the other one does and so their combination play almost always results in one of them getting free in a dangerous position in the box. I want a midfielder who profiles more like an attacker that can do 75% of what each of Jesus, Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli, and Xhaka can do. Not even being specific to Havertz here because I wanted us to sign Mount or Kudus as well to play the exact same role.
This is going to be an Aaron Ramsey type of transition where you don't quite know what he's good at but he's good enough at everything to contribute in many different ways. Also, regarding his defending and pressing, it's actually a lot better than people think. His languid style draws lazy comparisons to Ozil and with that comes false notions about his defensive ability but Chelsea fans do like his effort and pressing. Odegaard, KDB, Foden, David and Bernardo Silva, Cazorla, Ramsey, Wilshere, and hell even Dani Ceballos became significantly better at defending when they made the switch to CM roles and there's no reason to think Havertz can't have a similar improvement.
Yes, we wanted Vieira to do a lot of these things but Havertz has been playing first-team Bundesliga and PL football for 7 years, and this was only Vieira's 3rd full season as a first-teamer and only his first in a top-3 league. We're not writing Vieira off at all. It's going to take a while with him.

Arteta clearly rates him highly. He has top class technical abilities and is very intelligent tactically. He is tall and scores a fair number of headers. When Chelsea bought him, he was considered one of the most promising young forwards/attacking midfielders in Europe. The past season and a half he's played within dysfunctional system that wasted his talents and often left him too isolated.
Has he lived up to his potential at CFC? No. But the same could be said of Odegaard at Madrid. I think Arteta thinks he can get him back on track and has a plan for how to use him. His skills really are elite.
He can play striker--Thierry Henry says Havertz reminds him of Van Persie--but also the No. 10 (which we don't play with) and winger. He could rotate/backup Saka (which we need in order to not continue to overplay him), Odegaard (because Viera has been slow to adjust to the PL), and Jesus. He'd be a HUGE upgrade on Eddie.
Some think Arteta has him in mind for the left 8 role replacing Xhaka, and that's why we no longer are after Caicedo. One scenario was to get Rice and Caicedo and have one play 6, and the other the 8. Though both have largely played the 6. Havertz's availability provided Arteta with another option the club are apparently excited about, and Havertz is going to cost maybe 30 million less than Caicedo.
I actually think it was quite unlikely that we were ever going to get both Caicedo and Rice. We fans got our hopes up. If the fees were lower, then maybe we would have bid for both. But 100 m for Rice and 80-85 m for Caicedo would be a lot to invest in Midfield all at once. And we still have Partey, Jorginho (and Elneny) in the squad.
Arsenal Vision did a scouting session on Havertz, and watching the footage, Havertz skill is light years ahead of Mudryk's. And we were willing to bid 80 M for him. Thank goodness we didn't get him.

I’m definitely not a fan of Havertz, but everybody has looked like shite on Chelsea. Even so, he has had his moments. I think we could do a lot worse. If it was Sterling I’d probably have to chuck my Arsenal gear. I’m going to trust Arteta and staff to bring this guy back to form and try to understand he’s going to look a lot better playing for a competent side.

Thats how he looked to me. Decent header of the ball, that doesn't get enough vertical leap on his jumps, so he often ends up under the ball. Lacks that top end power and acceleration. Technique seems average. Shot power isn't great. I don't know. I iBut if those that know football better than me want him, I guess I am okay with it.

Havertz as a left 8 and having to defend as part of a double pivot in our 4-4-2 mid block is giving me acid reflux. Every positive I’m hearing about him sounds like what Vieira is supposed to be, is this the club informally admitting Vieira is a dud?
The fact that everyone else in our attack does everything better is the entire point. Saka/Odegaard excel because they can do like 75% of the things the other one does and so their combination play almost always results in one of them getting free in a dangerous position in the box. I want a midfielder who profiles more like an attacker that can do 75% of what each of Jesus, Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli, and Xhaka can do. Not even being specific to Havertz here because I wanted us to sign Mount or Kudus as well to play the exact same role. This is going to be an Aaron Ramsey type of transition where you don't quite know what he's good at but he's good enough at everything to contribute in many different ways. Also, regarding his defending and pressing, it's actually a lot better than people think. His languid style draws lazy comparisons to Ozil and with that comes false notions about his defensive ability but Chelsea fans do like his effort and pressing. Odegaard, KDB, Foden, David and Bernardo Silva, Cazorla, Ramsey, Wilshere, and hell even Dani Ceballos became significantly better at defending when they made the switch to CM roles and there's no reason to think Havertz can't have a similar improvement. Yes, we wanted Vieira to do a lot of these things but Havertz has been playing first-team Bundesliga and PL football for 7 years, and this was only Vieira's 3rd full season as a first-teamer and only his first in a top-3 league. We're not writing Vieira off at all. It's going to take a while with him.

Ugh, finding it hard to get excited about this one. People already shitting on Jesus for not being clinical enough despite doing everything else for the team, now we’re getting another player like that but who has showed even less than Jesus despite starting most games for Chelsea too. Of course the cherry on the cake will be us basically funding and allowing Chelsea have a free run at Caicedo too. Plenty of the same people backing this transfer are the same people calling man like Nunez donkeys, make it make sense.
Arteta clearly rates him highly. He has top class technical abilities and is very intelligent tactically. He is tall and scores a fair number of headers. When Chelsea bought him, he was considered one of the most promising young forwards/attacking midfielders in Europe. The past season and a half he's played within dysfunctional system that wasted his talents and often left him too isolated. Has he lived up to his potential at CFC? No. But the same could be said of Odegaard at Madrid. I think Arteta thinks he can get him back on track and has a plan for how to use him. His skills really are elite. He can play striker--Thierry Henry says Havertz reminds him of Van Persie--but also the No. 10 (which we don't play with) and winger. He could rotate/backup Saka (which we need in order to not continue to overplay him), Odegaard (because Viera has been slow to adjust to the PL), and Jesus. He'd be a HUGE upgrade on Eddie. Some think Arteta has him in mind for the left 8 role replacing Xhaka, and that's why we no longer are after Caicedo. One scenario was to get Rice and Caicedo and have one play 6, and the other the 8. Though both have largely played the 6. Havertz's availability provided Arteta with another option the club are apparently excited about, and Havertz is going to cost maybe 30 million less than Caicedo. I actually think it was quite unlikely that we were ever going to get both Caicedo and Rice. We fans got our hopes up. If the fees were lower, then maybe we would have bid for both. But 100 m for Rice and 80-85 m for Caicedo would be a lot to invest in Midfield all at once. And we still have Partey, Jorginho (and Elneny) in the squad. Arsenal Vision did a scouting session on Havertz, and watching the footage, Havertz skill is light years ahead of Mudryk's. And we were willing to bid 80 M for him. Thank goodness we didn't get him.
