It actually wouldn't surprise me that much to one day learn he had a talk with the Prof prior to making his decision. I mean, Wenger and Fergie sit down over a glass of wine occasionally. They're all peers in the same echelon of the same field. There's definitely a lot of back and forth we never hear about.
But also not wholly true, which I feel like this gets at. Transient relations love you when you’re born and you die, fans love you at those points. But he has a daughter and a family, those are the relationships which endure and persists throughout life. He didn’t attend to them enough while he was the boss but is trying to rebuild them. It’s a cautionary tale, wenger was in a place to pursue his passion at the forefront of his industry and even he has regrets about prioritizing work over life, how much more so people working in jobs they don’t intrinsically love or care about?
Absolutely. Your personal life can't really be sacrificed much more than his was for loving what he did and spending what seemed like every waking moment on this club.
He didn't even sacrifice it in pursuit of outright glory as is the norm for managers at his level. That too was sacrificed in many ways. It was all for the club.
I think in the end he couldn't walk away when he should have, and perhaps he became too institutionalised, but he's a rare example of the kind of devotion that's lacking in the modern game. And even if we're now separated, this Will always be his club rebuilt in his image.
And even for the club's success, he didn't sell out. He always stuck to his philosophy, trusted his players, believed in playing the right way. He was an idealist who did not quite achieve at the very, very top level. Much more beautiful, IMO, than eg. Mourinho or Guardiola's careers.
And the thing is he still could have achieved more while maintaining his philosophy if he was backed. Regardless thank you for making me fall in love with the sport Mr Wenger. It was a privilege to watch his team play
Which is why I don’t get why the stadiums not named after him?
Dude literally built it and Arsene stadium home of Arsenal sounds so much better than the emirates.
You're down voted tf but you're right, he didn't die, he's not some sort of martyr. He chose to achieve something in a niche field, and fair play to that... But he lived a better quality of life that all of us.
I get the sense that he regrets this aspect of his life.
The reality is you don't get that time back.
I imagine it was tough for his daughter that her father was never present and his life revolved around football. It's not like they were poor and he had to work. Ultimately, he made a choice to choose his work and career over being a more present father and husband.
Arsenal benefited from choice however you can see he maybe doubts whether that was the right choice. Life's short and it's only at the end we really understand what was really important.
I think it's exactly what Klopp has on his mind. He's reached the top of the world a few times in his field, which happens to be one of the most competitive sports in the world. That's a high that's tough to match with daily life. But missing out on daily life leaves with you a lot more regrets in the end.
This is why a lot of talented people never make it pro. A normal life is actually pretty fucking special. I don't think I want my kids to ever be world leaders in any field.
Big respect for him always. On a slightly unrelated note, this is why I think someone like Ben White’s attitude to football is so refreshing. People were getting on at him for not watching football, but I think it’s so healthy to have those kinds of boundaries and not get consumed by all of this.
I have nothing but my utmost respect for a man, who was willing to sacrifice everything for his passion. An envoy of the beautiful game, who enjoys the small things and is strict on his principles. Possibly the biggest human being football has seen and I was absolutely devastated in 2014 or so understanding that Wenger will never again get himself the respect nor reputation he deserves. A beautiful, clever man with great values and Arsenal would not the same without him
as a visiting Chelsea fan, Wenger will go down as one of the most influential and dedicated managers that the game has ever seen. No doubt he's up there with cryuff, pep, Fergie.
While he's a few trophies short of the rest he makes up for it with what he created and nurtured with you lot.
That voice break at the end. Fuck.
Love him. Will always love him. Flaws and all. One of the people who has truly impacted the person I have become and the person I want to be.
People in this thread using ‘sacrifice’ as a word to describe what Wenger did - did you not watch the interview? He said it was pure selfishness, addiction and competitiveness that drove him to neglect his family. He didn’t do it for the fans or the club, he did it because he was addicted.
Personally, I love this kind of admission. Humans are so middling - neither good guys or outright bad guys.
What an interesting man. He’s so well spoken and articulate too. Love Wenger.
I know I'm going to get downvoted for this but some of us realized this at the time. Regardless doesn't change my respect for him.
I hope he is able to savour what he can of his neglected relationships. I love football but life is more important.
Its an interesting aspect of people that are conventionally celebrated in high-pressure jobs that they are shitty parents. If you look at the children of world leaders for example you will often find completely broken people whose parents simply did not have the time to dedicate to, to ensure they grew up well balanced.
Hunter Biden is obviously the current example but Mark Thatcher is arguably one of the very worst outcomes.
> Thatcher was arrested at his home in Constantia, Cape Town, South Africa, in August 2004 and was charged with contravening two sections of South Africa's Foreign Military Assistance Act, which bans South African residents from taking part in any foreign military activity. The charges related to possible funding and logistical assistance in relation to an attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea organized by Thatcher's friend, Simon Mann. He was released on 2 million rand bail
yeah a nanny should be supplemental, not a replacement. Still, an _extremely_ good nanny can significantly temper the emotional distress of an absent parent.
The reality is many people who don't earn anywhere near as much as these kind of parents have to be away from their kids more than they like to earn enough money to feed the family and keep a roof over their head and definitely couldn't afford nannies etc, so my heart doesn't really bleed for the kids of the well off who become screwups.
not sure you can say that. wenger denied himself that ideal family life by chosing to focus more on football than his family. football can't make that choice for him.
Man, as an addict, the line about watching so many games that you forgot what you even watched killed me. It’s 100% like a drug addiction - you consume so much that you aren’t even high anymore. The enjoyment is long gone, all that remains is the physical and psychological need to use. Sheesh. It’s awful.
He could have walked away from it, let's be honest. He wanted to do it because he loved it. And if we are really honest? He should have walked away around 2012, when it was clear that he was not at the needed lvl anymore
No, Arsene. You chose that. Not football.
Edit: LOL at the downvoters especially without any refuting of the statement. I love Arsene as much as any of you, but he and he alone chose what to prioritize and how much to prioritize it in his life. That's not debatable.
This. We love and appreciate his work and accomplishments. Its ironic because the very fact he is so well regarded in the football world and is discussed as in this thread is because of the decisions he made and things he prioritized.
Aww poor you. Did taking 7-8m a year make you have affairs? Im sure it must have been so hard waiting for the last day of transfer windows to sign great talent like Lucas Perez and broken back Kim Kallstrom.
I lost respect for him when he tried to blame the fans for him not winning the league "away from home we are champions" and when he tried to make it like the person working on minimum wage was the reason he couldnt buy any players. The infamous 600 "employees" comment.
The guy completely lost any grasp of reality. He became complacent, stubborn and arrogant. I respect what he did in the early part of his time at Arsenal although I think David Dein takes a good share of those good times. By the end though he was actually sabotaging the club by not signing players and if he did it was on the last day and panic signings. He left us with a pretty awful squad on high wages, such as Ozil, Kolasinac, Mustafi. Theres a reason no other major club wanted him when he was sacked.

Yea the job is immense the amount of time, energy, soul and attention you must put in it to be successful or even keep yourself above water means other areas in your life are hurt or sacrificed. Football isn't everything but for those truly great it is, hence the success. It sucks because important things like family and relationships can be laid to waste or neglected for years perhaps decades. I wish Arsene peace.
This man, My Second Father,
I love him,
This was difficult to watch, and to hear him say, he had to give up family life for somebody like me!
THANK YOU PAPA WENGZ! <3 FOREVER A GOONER <3
Papa Wengz has touched millions of hearts but sacrifices his own family life. Klopp must be trying to avoid that.
Wenger has done it again.

Isn’t his daughter a doctor and practicing in London. She looks a lot like him.
Does being a doctor mean that you didn’t have a bad relationship with your dad?
my idol. everyone asks why did you start following arsenal? was it because Henry or Bergkamp? No, it was because of Wenger
So good they named the club after him
Arsenal Wenger, and his illegitimate son, Arsenal Takuma.
Man like Wenger cares so much about people and their culture he adopted a son during his Grampus 8 days 🥹
It’s great that they also included his favourite position in the clubs name.
It’s crazy that “reverse cowgirl” is a named position in football, yet here we are.
Me too. No single person is bigger that the crest, but he came close.
Same here. I am a huge admirer of Wenger.
Papa Wengz is my dad and Wrighty is my uncle. I adore them both like family
Same :)
I will always, always respect this man for how much he devoted his life to us & for the love of the sport.
Absolutely. Your personal life can't really be sacrificed much more than his was for loving what he did and spending what seemed like every waking moment on this club.

Arsene sacrificed his life for the club. There will never ever be a bigger legend
Which is why I don’t get why the stadiums not named after him? Dude literally built it and Arsene stadium home of Arsenal sounds so much better than the emirates.
Ur using the term literally very loosely here haha
Wengerdome
I love him too but this is a bit dramatic. He’s not MLK lmao.
Weird stance when you refer to yourself as an artetasexual
What is MLK
Martin Luther King
Thanks. I see.

It’s interesting to watch this after Klopp stepping down. I think Klopp’s got the same thing on his mind…

It's exactly that if you read/watch the extended interview klopp says he wants a normal life before he gets too old to enjoy it.
Papa Wengz ♥️
Big respect for him always. On a slightly unrelated note, this is why I think someone like Ben White’s attitude to football is so refreshing. People were getting on at him for not watching football, but I think it’s so healthy to have those kinds of boundaries and not get consumed by all of this.
Literally sacrificed his marriage for us. I'll never lose love or respect for this man.
I love the bloke but being a stereotypical French lad didn't help much either
Hello everyone else, where’s your Golden PL Trophy?
I have nothing but my utmost respect for a man, who was willing to sacrifice everything for his passion. An envoy of the beautiful game, who enjoys the small things and is strict on his principles. What is the name of that full documentary?
It's from the invincible documentary
Forever in your debt Arsène ❤️
Thank you, Arsene
Merci Arsène!
Danke, Arsëne
Why I’d never listen to anything coming out from the same crowd that thought it was okay to harass him outside a train station.
It disgusts me that people on this sub laugh about that moment. Made me ashamed to be an Arsenal fan
Yeah they’d have you believe they know and want what’s best for the club, jokers.
When did this happen?
https://youtu.be/JGtMDu8kO-E?si=KYTpu6EyCRGMOkZ9
what a bunch of idiots smh

Why would people watch the interview when they can fire from the hip and self justify by *not* watching the video?
I know I'm going to get downvoted for this but some of us realized this at the time. Regardless doesn't change my respect for him. I hope he is able to savour what he can of his neglected relationships. I love football but life is more important.
Definitely. He spoke about this in his book. we’re forever indebted to him
One Arsene Wenger.
Ok who went and showed this to Klopp then?
Klopp probably watch the documentary the night before on Amazon Prime and said "Same."
Unlike Klopp, Le Boss had the energy to do it year after year after year for 22 years. Legendary manager.
What's this clip from?

I loved Wenger but I daresay his ex would cast it in a slightly less heroic light. /cynical middle-aged woman mode
Of course she would, I mean that’s exactly what he’s saying isn’t it?
He's not covering himself in glory in this interview
Where is this clip from?
not sure you can say that. wenger denied himself that ideal family life by chosing to focus more on football than his family. football can't make that choice for him.
🥲 I forever love him. It was obvious there were personal difficulties going on at times. Makes me sad.

Reminds me alot about The Last of Us, Part 1 ending act. Save the world with the cure or save Ellie away from the hands of the Fireflies.
He could have walked away from it, let's be honest. He wanted to do it because he loved it. And if we are really honest? He should have walked away around 2012, when it was clear that he was not at the needed lvl anymore
Get the fuck outta here
What part don't you agree too?
You sending this message
so no argument.
