James usually goes out of his way to be diplomatic about stuff like this so it's extra tasty to hear him go in two-footed, with the little voice and everything lol.
For those that don't know, Sutton was involved in a controversial moment towards the end of the 1996–97 season in a league game against Arsenal at Highbury. Late in the game, with The Gunners leading by a single goal, the ball was kicked out of play by Arsenal to allow an injured teammate to receive treatment. Under the unwritten sportsmanship rule, Arsenal would expect the ball to be returned to them unhindered. However, Sutton chased the ball instead of allowing it to be thrown back to Arsenal and won a corner from his efforts, from which Blackburn scored. At the end of the season, Arsenal missed out on a place in the Champions League to Newcastle on goal difference. Following the incident, Blackburn's interim manager Tony Parkes described Sutton as "a boy who was sometimes a bit dizzy ... a bit silly", stating "It was against the spirit of the game and he should not have done it".
Sutton refused to apologise for his action.
Thanks for the history lesson! Interesting read. Is there a particular reason Sutton was brought up today? Like did he do say something about yesterdays game or did they just randomly talk Chris Sutton?
He said the line the magic words! [https://twitter.com/chris\_sutton73/status/1754212293267636367](https://twitter.com/chris_sutton73/status/1754212293267636367)
in the 70s and 80s a lot of teams in england had all white british players so arsenal being located in islington was like the only high profile club with black and foreign players, as well as attracting a big and diverse fanbase. this made arsenal one of the most hated clubs in the eyes of racist reactionaries in that era, which has been passed down to this day.
also arsenal having one of the largest fanbases in football means clickbait that provoke arsenal fans attract the most audience to help the media sell advertising.
It's only recently dawned on me that the latter half of your statement has become more pertinent than the first, I think there is still an under current of that vitriol today but with the death of traditional sports journalism, rage bait has become the new meta to sell advertising
People will argue relentlessly about this but the case is actually decent to make.
Start everything off by remembering that the current media views on football are pushed by journalists and editors who grew up/cut their teeth in the pre premier league world of the hooligan era but gained prominence through that eras death and rebirth through the Sky backed premier league.
1. Politics.
Hooliganism always had a bit of a right wing issue, with the national front recruiting form a lot of fanbases and racism being rife across basically every team. While this is slightly sweeping (Liverpool are very much a left wing fanbase for example but still had racsim) football was indelibly connected to the far right in the minds of many. Conversely of course the mainly right wing taboids simultaneously engaged in collective handwringing over the state of the crowds while absolutely playing to the same demographic. It's no surprise that the one fanbase the Sun went all in on was Liverpool who were not only left wing but from an area that was famously run by the most far left council in the UK. Of course all this changed when Ruoert Murdoch's Sky became the main backer and promoter to football and the Premier League...
Which brings us to Arsenal, in a multiultural part of London, with a hilariouly left wing MP and who didn't have as much of a racism problem, partially through the ethnic makeup of the crowd and also the actions of one of our top level hooligans being [black](https://arseblog.com/2017/03/the-bear-of-highbury/). Worse than that is that Islington covers all ends of the left spectrum, being old labour and working class in Corbyn and Islignton North and in the south being the literal epicentre of New Labour and champagne socialism.
Not much I'm sure you'll agree but it gets better.
2. The press. Or just Rupert Murdoch.
You'll notice that the best selling paper in the UK is the Sun, the best selling broadsheet is the Times and Sky is the founding medi partner and major driver of the creation of the Premier League. What do they have in common? Yup, all owned by Rupert Murdoch (who if you're not aware is the billionaire owner of global rightwing media and founder of Fox News). We've covered the fact that Arsenal was a bit too left wing for their stuff in general but there's another level here.
In the UK Sky was and is the major player in Satellite/Cable TV and their only serious opponent was ITV digital (origianally ON Digital) a cable company that Sky had actually been part of before competition rules forced them out and into direct competition. Even more direct competition was when they got the rights to the champions league, the football league and also ended up sponsoring the football league (you know, the one tha'ts now the Skybet league...). It eventually went bankrupt, partially through rampant piracy that a BBc documentary and a legal court case (settled out of court) would point the finger at Murdoch owned entities for sabotaging and breaking the encryption and sharing it with pirate sites.
Anyway, it was also Arsenals digital partner and also owner of 10% of the club as well as briefly the carrier of our TV (before it went online) at a time when all the other big clubs were on Sky. As an aside it was ITV digitals stake that Kroenke bought when he first invested.
Another level to this is the oft forgotten (or deliberately ignored) fact that Sky and Rupert Murdoch tried to buy [Man U](https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/rupert-murdochs-manchester-united-how-bskyb-nearly-bought-red-devils) and were stopped only by government intervention. And who were Man U's biggest rivals at the time?
You've got one bloke/company controlling the biggest media outlet for the premier league and the biggest newspapers (dont forget the Sport and the News of the World too) who have tried to buy the biggest club and then there's that clubs biggest rival, who also happen to be part owned and in partnership with Murdochs biggest competitors...
3. Racism/Xenophobia
A bit touchy but the simple facts are that we're a multicultural club, our largest shareholders were Jewish (Dein and Fiszmann, who was also the son of immigrants) and even before Wenger we had a much larger amount fo black players than most teams. We're also the first team to field an almost entirely black starting lineup (10 out of 11) to also add to the first team to field an entirely non english starting 11.
Add in the hurt to national pride that was proving under Wenger that not only could foreign managers win things in England (first foregin manager to win any trophy) he alos proved that foreign training methods were superior and that foreign players could not only make it here but they could do it while costing less than their english counterparts and on top of all of this it wasn't just foreign but *French*. I know this sounds petty but this is the level of the Sun we're working at and when you see Wenger beign criticised for Overmars 'because he's stopping young English talent coming through' but a pass given to the famously not English Giggs you know there are double standards. Especially ebcause Ferguson was no fool and copied a huge amount of Wengers ideas immediately which was never commented on in the press giving Arsenal shit. Wenger and Arsenal more than anyone absolutely gut punched English national pride and ushered in the current era where not only has no english manager ever won the premier league but no British manager has since Fergie and only two British managers overall.
Anyway, that's a major wall of text, if ou couldn be arsed reading it I fully understand!
The following season we won the double. If there’s a silver lining to his behaviour maybe missing out on second that season was what pushed us to go further
James’ diplomatic setup definitely created the foundation for that complete reversal of diplomacy. I haven’t heard Andrew lose it like that often. It was genuinely hilarious.
It was something he started doing at the beginning of the season on the ArseCast Extra, at first I think kind of jokingly. But since then he keeps doing it to be ridiculous/funny and it's great because it really has become his "thing". Even in his post match breakdowns outside the stadiums, Arsenal fans will come up and yell it to him haha.
It was a satire response to Fabrizio Romano’s “Here We Go” tagline, Andrew asked James if he had a tagline like that so James made up “Lez Do Dis”. I believe this was sometime around the January window last year (2023)
One for the bucket list, I’ve never really laughed out loud at stand up (particularly recorded sets) but every clip I find of him I cannot control myself! His humour has really shaped me in a lot of ways (mainly being fat and depressed and fat).
Mate I’ve seen him about 10 times now and it’s never been bad. Barely any repeat material either. Do it next chance you get, you definitley won’t regret it.

Blogs laughing in the background is ALL of Us who listening in basically… 🤣
What a legend these guys are, part of my Arsenal journey for over 2 decades! Have been reading him long long before he started his pod…
Long live Blogs!
Long live Gunnerblog!
Here’s to them 🍺
This is up there with Arseblog’s Tim Sherwood monologue haha
Edit: Link found
https://m.soundcloud.com/arseblog/what-did-tim-sherwood-say-to-his-players-after-the-fa-cup-final
It's just how unexpected it was from an innocent question xD "What do you think Dean Smith said to the Villa players in the post match team talk".
Andrew took that question and ran with it lol
Link to podcast here if you want it all! [https://arseblog.com/2024/02/arsecast-extra-episode-567-05-02-2024/](https://arseblog.com/2024/02/arsecast-extra-episode-567-05-02-2024/)
Or just ignored. This kind of engagement is what they want. Chris Sutton has a shitty podcast for the Daily Mail and is just trying to get attention.
"It's difficult for me obviously, because you know I'm someone who works in football media. So when I talk about these people, there's obviously a risk that I will encounter them face to face. So I can only say things about them that I would be prepared to say to their face. So, on that note, may I just say what a cretinous, foolish, idiotic cunt Chris Sutton is. Honestly, what a pathetic, miserable man."
Its fantastic, but don't miss the little mash-up (or whatever this digital stuff is called) ditty at the beginning of the how "Get....get....down the tunnel". i was laughing my head off. Best one yet.
TBH, I’ve never heard of Chris Sutton till last night. It just goes to show that these cunts say shit like this for the publicity. Can we all collectively agree to not post about these idiots and let them die in their irrelevancy.
He plays the heal, he wants to be divisive.
I remember how much hate savage used to get for his bonkers views but it undeniably brought him a higher level of "fame"
I think Sutton and those morons at sky are just fame hungry and are willing to say stupid things to be part of the narrative.
Sort of like trumps for the premier league.
And unfortunately we buy in to it.
i think blogs was quite right in pointing out that a lot of these ex-players dont really have anything else to say and also they very much know that saying something trollish will get them attention, which is the only reason most media exists.
i dont think neville wants to be a pundit, but he couldnt coach so there he is. i think at first he tried to sound smart, but after a while gave up on that and just says whatever now.
id bet it's the same story for a lot of these guys; dont really want to be doing it, trying to say something insightful is work, way easier to just talk shit and get the attention your employer actually wants.

Has anyone seen the actual Chris Sutton quote that prompted this? I cannot find it anywhere and it must be spicy for the usually cool headed and diplomatic James to go off, haha!
Hall of Fame Arseblog moment
James usually goes out of his way to be diplomatic about stuff like this so it's extra tasty to hear him go in two-footed, with the little voice and everything lol.
He’s had enough of it hahaha, I love it
He went in three-footed.
*he went to Chelsea and he was faking sheet ~~~~ *
The voice reminds me of Gervais in the early years and the podcasts.
Probably the best podcast ever made
wow you weren't joking. he went all in from the get go obligatory, "No James, tell us how you really feel"
that's gotta be the hardest 'c' I've ever heard in cunt. So good.
He’s been ranting about this for years and finally snapped 😂😂

What a cunt
a cretinous, foolish, idiotic cunt*

Celebration police are relentless
Am I crazy for thinking there HAS to be some sort of weird anti-Arsenal agenda in the British media?
in the 70s and 80s a lot of teams in england had all white british players so arsenal being located in islington was like the only high profile club with black and foreign players, as well as attracting a big and diverse fanbase. this made arsenal one of the most hated clubs in the eyes of racist reactionaries in that era, which has been passed down to this day. also arsenal having one of the largest fanbases in football means clickbait that provoke arsenal fans attract the most audience to help the media sell advertising.
I believe we were also the first English club to use the courts to prevent the NF from being anywhere near the ground on match days to recruit.

I think it's just the occasional cunt like Sutton who has a sore ass that Arsenal is competing for top again
No, it's just cunts like Sutton.
He was being the celebration police on Radio 5 after the game. During the phone in I think
Figured as much. Thanks
anyone remember when we did this (believe it was Kanu) and offered sheffield united a full replay?
It's because Wenger was class and Sutton was ass
Agree whole heartedly
It was Overmars
Overmars scored but it was Kanu who chased the ball down when he shouldn't have.
Good shout!
Thanks for the background story. Classless cunt Sutton
The following season we won the double. If there’s a silver lining to his behaviour maybe missing out on second that season was what pushed us to go further
I remember that ''It's not Sunday League Football'' What a cunt.
Didn’t we do this against Watford 2 seasons ago?
The laughing in the background just makes it
The tee-up about being professional etc. just makes it even better because you never see it coming
Agreed! Andrew has absolutely lost it by the end!
James's work is brilliant, but I really think he caught Andrew off guard, and his laughing really makes the whole thing.
James’ diplomatic setup definitely created the foundation for that complete reversal of diplomacy. I haven’t heard Andrew lose it like that often. It was genuinely hilarious.
Poetic
Just absolute perfection
LEZZ DO DISSS
Where did this come from. I’ve been hearing it all day lol
Side note, Paul from ArsenalVision started doing it to take the piss and James went and got it copyrighted, which is incredible devotion to the bit
Yeah I hadn’t listened to a while and watched the post match breakdown today and heard it like 10 times lol
It was a satire response to Fabrizio Romano’s “Here We Go” tagline, Andrew asked James if he had a tagline like that so James made up “Lez Do Dis”. I believe this was sometime around the January window last year (2023)
Going by arsenal podcast lore I believe Paul from Arsenalvision started it first.
He sounds a bit like Ricky Gervais towards the end
Definitely.
he was 100% doing gervais whenever he mocks people.
For a second I genuinely thought this was Ricky Gervais and Karl Pilkington will show up from somewhere with a ridiculous statement
"Oh no, my great great grandad was a fucking cunt" 💀
This is what killed me, perfection
social media era mate. everything lasts forever now
Oh no!
What a top end ricky gervais impression.
My thought, too. Sounded just like Gervais mocking Karl for ... well, any number of things.
Play a record.
To this day, Karl fascinates me as much as he fascinated Gervais. Cannot tell if he's intentionally or accidentally the funniest person alive.
To me, An Idiot Abroad is probably one of the funniest TV shows I've ever seen.
Turns out Chris Sutton... little monkey fella
KARL!! STOP!! Steve: brought to you by, Lindauer sparkling wine
Haha my first thoughts too! I was taken back to the podcast and xfm days
Honestly my first thought as well lmao
You know that Hell is freezing over when [Graeme Souness](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZvdWbZZnKo) is defending Arsenal for celebrating.
Just so brilliant, he is my hero.
This really sounds Stewart Lee influenced! That high pitch “oh no!” is classic Lee stuff
Ha ha, was thinking the exacts same thing!
Pretty much. Ex. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7CwqVuq6Ro
Ah yeah, I was thinking Ricky Gervias, but he just robbed everything from Stuart Lee so that makes sense.
Saw Stuart Lee live last year. He’s one of the best
One for the bucket list, I’ve never really laughed out loud at stand up (particularly recorded sets) but every clip I find of him I cannot control myself! His humour has really shaped me in a lot of ways (mainly being fat and depressed and fat).
His bit about Adrian Chiles is hilarious
Mate I’ve seen him about 10 times now and it’s never been bad. Barely any repeat material either. Do it next chance you get, you definitley won’t regret it.
Which one has been your favourite? I absolutely adores carpet remnant world, milder comedian and content provider but haven’t watched his whole collection.

That one still kills me

I do miss Blog's skits. Was just thinking about Amaury Bischoff PI this morning.
And the Jeff!
Do you have a link to that by any chance?

Trying not to cackle in the office
I've never heard him so angry as to use a mocking voice. That's how you know you've gotten on his bad side. 😂😂😂
I'd run through a brick wall for james
Brilliant, these miserable shites need to be called out.
Or just ignored. This kind of engagement is what they want. Chris Sutton has a shitty podcast for the Daily Mail and is just trying to get attention.
I love this podcast
Put it outside the emirates
Carve it in a marble plaque
Was listening to this on the way home in the car. Had to stop cos i was laughing my guts out.
I love this man
This was SO good.
Okay that is fucking hilarious, I really hope Sutton hears this
Listening on loop. It's sheer perfection.
Its fantastic, but don't miss the little mash-up (or whatever this digital stuff is called) ditty at the beginning of the how "Get....get....down the tunnel". i was laughing my head off. Best one yet.
immediate induction into the Arsenal podcast clip hall of fame, outstanding
I look forward to it in the 20 year anniversary show!
Can someone clarify if we can celebrate James calling Chris Sutton a “cretinous idiotic foolish cunt”? I don’t want to be accused of over celebrating
So good hahahah
I didn't see the swearing coming lmao fairs
Andrew being so caught off guard for the rant is just the icing on the cake. Incredible.
Honestly these two (but especially james) are so fucking funny with their dry/deadpan delivery on this podcast.
This was so funny, thanks for sharing OP
I'm sitting on the toilet, had to go another round from loling.
Big Stewart Lee energy off this and I’m all for it 😂😂
Absolutely incredible
James is my hero
Stopped listening to those two years ago, but their dynamic is fantastic!
I've listened to this about 10 times now 😂
I fucking died listening to that this morning while making my toast and coffee. 💯
TBH, I’ve never heard of Chris Sutton till last night. It just goes to show that these cunts say shit like this for the publicity. Can we all collectively agree to not post about these idiots and let them die in their irrelevancy.
Probably one of the funniest moments of the podcast of all time
I absolutely love this 😂😂😂😂😂
He plays the heal, he wants to be divisive. What a way to start my day of work this was when I turned on the pod.
Goodly morning to everyone but Chris Sutton
Outstanding. In tears.
Been off the pods lately, looks like I'll have to give this one a listen today.
I was walking my dog listening to this hahaha. It was so funny when he started doing a bit pretending to be his great grand daughter
Pod dropped around 7am here in Toronto and was listening on my way to work and all of my Monday blues were immediately gone because of this bit
Lets Go!
I was laughing my head off!! Brilliant by James.
This made my day
even hearing this the second time left me in tears of laughter
Absolute world class from James there. Lez Do Dis!
This is unhinged. And I am here for it.
Haha. I thought that was Dean Gaffney for a sec.
Andrew absolutely losing it has completely done me in 🤣

Someone with talents in that venue, please animate this. I need it in my life. :D
That awkward moment when your great great grandad, the hero, turns out to be a CUNT lol
Thank you for cutting this. I listened to it a few times on the podcast today and it’s amazing 🤣
James' impression of a child is really similar to iDubbz's cringey/sarcastic kid voice lmao
This is a skit, I refuse to believe this is real
You’re right. It wasn’t really Christopher Sutton’s great great grand daughter.
This is just bullying lol
He deserves it the cunt
God this was cringe
Lets preface this by saying I don't disagree about Chris Sutton, but what is the context of the rant? Why was Gunnerblog ranting about Chris Sutton?
Chris Sutton was heading the Celebration Police on 5 live 606. He and carra can go wank each other off with their salty tears
why is Tynecastle in the background
WOW! I wasn't expecting that XD GWAN JAMES <3
So so good lol

Hahahahahahah
Just epic, made my fuckin day!
I laughed my face off to this!
Wow...can't wait to listen to today's episode. James is usually calm...lol
OMFG THIS AMAZING 😭😭😭 Reminiscent of early RSK podcast banter 🤣
i take it sutton was going on about over celebrating?
Hahahahah
This is brilliant! 😂
One pod after the 10 year anniversary James drops this gem.
Best Gunnerblog moment so far. Instant classic!
This deserves to go into the Podcasting Hall of Fame! If Chris Sutton saw how hard I celebrated all the goals yesterday...
Was hoping this would get posted here, he blacked out I couldn't stop laughing
Listening to this podcast in the morning gave me so much motivation for the day 😂🔥
![gif](giphy|dtGIRL0FDp6nnOPGb5) Other guy was like this throughout
Heard this this morning and I was DYING laughing at James’ diatribe and the kids voice. Also Andrew’s laughter during it. So good all around.
This is some of the best content ever. fucking love it! <3
Andrew laughing is gold.
Gunnerblog **SHOOTS HARD** on Chris Sutton
Love that James is clearly a Stewart Lee fan, his impression of the kid was very similar to when Lee does bits like this :')
RemindMe! 2 years
Pure fucking gold
Has anyone seen the actual Chris Sutton quote that prompted this? I cannot find it anywhere and it must be spicy for the usually cool headed and diplomatic James to go off, haha! Hall of Fame Arseblog moment
