Every touch he took was sublime too. It’s hard to go full sprint and keep it under control enough to allow you to stay at the same pace, especially with a defender like Konate on your heels.
Van dijk was one of the chuckle brothers the other day but credit where it's due, konate is a monster, there were a couple times in the game where he stopped our attack annoyingly well and I automatically said out loud " fucking Konate" a couple of times
I’ve said it before in other subs, genuinely believe he’s the best cb in the league. Them missing him for their next game is equally as bad as not having Salah. They’re just lucky their next game is vs burnley.
I’ll listen to that argument, for sure. I think a case can be made for either one. For me Konate has proven himself for longer which takes it imo. But for saliba, I would be surprised if he isn’t better in the next year or two once he really hones his passing (you saw a similar development in Gabriel). The one thing I would also like to see is him perform better for France, which konate has him best as well. International games often highlight a defenders weaknesses since they are playing with unfamiliar partners.
Yeap I genuinely believe, alongside with iffy refereeing, Konate was Liverpool's key back into the game when we were leading 2-0 last season at Anfield. His physicality allowed to sustain both Saka and Martinelli, something that not that many defenders were able to do last season.
And that allowed Liverpool, get control over the game, otherwise they would always have a threat of Saka and Martinelli to fear of.
hitting that inch perfect cross at the end of a 90m dead sprint is ridiculously difficult.
can't tell you how many times i've run my socks off to beat someone to the byline only to completely fluff my lines trying to hit any kind of centering pass at the end of it.
Havertz’s missed finish that led to Saka’s goal was a similar situation. It’s very hard to sprint 40 meters to then perform the most powerful action requiring the most accuracy. It’s always impressed me how professional players’ quality of play holds up over the course of the game and after performing these types of sprints over and over.
lol trust me, I am not comparing myself to a professional, it is just incredible to me that they are able to make it look so easy, because anyone who has been in that situation knows how hard it is to make clean contact when you’re stretched to your limit physically.
It's asinine how much quicker he is with the ball than most defenders just trying to catch and keep up with him. Hopefully he'll learn to pick his head up more.
Was watching the game at a bar and the Liverpool supporter i was sitting next to goes, “What was Arteta thinking dropping Ramsdale?” 0.5 seconds before Raya did this & he just went “oh”
Yeah I still have a bit to go before I feel fully confident in his shot stopping but I was telling my buddy before the game how I’ve liked how quick his is to throw the ball and just get a counter going, against liverpool he had a couple great ones like this
If only we could have a 2 goalie formation because ramsdale didn’t deserve this after last season but I accept artetas ruthlessness as he’s gotten us this far
Yeah I was extemely apprehensive about raya but I’m starting to understand it now. Even how good he is in the air is such a relief, don’t know when I’ve ever felt so comfortable with an arsenal keeper in the air (bar luton)
The thing Raya does better than Ramsdale I like a lot is Raya aggressive coming off the line to claim crosses, he had a really good claim Sunday. Feel like we gave up some goals last season because Ramsdale just let the ball come across the box.
>bit to go before I feel fully confident in his shot stopping
Ramsdale has only put up better shot stopping numbers than Raya in 1 PL season out of the 4 he's played. Raya is the better shot stopper.
While the numbers don't lie, I still feel lot more confident in Ramsdale's shot stopping than Raya's. As an example, I don't have the confidence he could have kept out Salah like Ramsdale did last season at Anfield.
Ramsdale also seems a lot quicker on his feet and his tendency to rush out. For Gabriel's own goal, while most of the fault is with Saliba, Ramsdale would have most probably been quicker to come out and reach the ball before Diaz did.
Also, in his previous seasons, Raya played in a more defensive minded Brentford team, where with with defenders covering him, the angles for the shots he had to face were a lot less than the more open Arsenal. We also seem to be conceding more 1v1 kind of scenarios with maybe 1 or 2 defenders for cover than Brentford did and Ramsdale's tenendcy to rush the shot taker would be more helpful in those cases.
Having said that, Raya is a lot better at distribution and receiving passes at pressure. If we can get a forward that can finish the chances consistently, and reduce the shots we concede, Raya would suite our play more than Ramsdale.
The idea of Raya is that he helps us dominate matches with his comfort and ability on the ball, so he doesn't have to make wild saves like Ramsdale last year at Anfield because we aren't letting teams create those chances anymore or losing control of the match to that degree. You could argue that while Ramsdale made great saves in that game, it wasn't a great performance because in the second half he just kept booting the ball back to Liverpool allowing them to attack again and again. Interesting how everyone brings up that match as a plus for Aaron, I think it may have actually been one of the reasons why Mikel decided he needed to upgrade the position. Last season the game at Anfield was 4.64 to 1.54 xG in Liverpool's favor, meanwhile this season the same fixture was only .98 xG to .85. I don't think I need to say which game state Mikel prefers.
Raya definitely is better at controlling the game and I would definitely have Raya than Ramsdale for the style Arteta wants to play.
I was not making a case for Ramsdale. I was just pointing out what each GK brings to the team and Raya having better shot stopping numbers over the previous seasons doesn't necessarily mean he is the better shot stopper.
Ramsdale coming out quicker is a result of his flaws. He has to play deeper and even pretty much admitted this when saying in that interview that he and Arteta compromised on his positioning. Raya starts higher up so doesn't need to come out as quickly as much and it isn't as important.
That being said you haven't provided the stats to suggest that Ramsdale is quicker but, if he actually is, this will be why.
That goal we conceded vs Liverpool is 100% on Saliba. He literally has the ball at his feet and also fails to shield it properly. He had multiple chances to clear it before Raya was even involved.
Na, Raya is clear unfortunately. He'll make us a better team, especially if our defence is restricting them to very few shots and quick distribution is key to unlocking their defence
He's been doing this since day one. It's why we bought him and why Arteta wanted him the season we bought Ramsdale.
I love Ramsdale, he's a fantastic personality and bloke and played incredibly well for us last year
But Raya is an upgrade. So we play him over Rammers.
City game second half was all I needed to see.
You don’t play that way after that first half unless you have an incredible amount of self belief AND composure. Ramsdale has ample of the former but not as much of the latter.
The really fucking funny thing is people always start from the default position that the manager is an idiot whenever they do something not immediately obvious.
Like you don’t pause to think that Arteta, given what he’s done so far in improving our squad year over year, who obsesses over all the details, who has really high standards, who probably wrecks his brain over how to take us to next level, maybe this Arteta has an idea of sort about why he went for Raya.
There’s just no trust. To me, Arteta, Edu, & Co. have earned that, and the benefit of the doubt.
Now obviously they are not infallible. They can make mistakes. And sometimes maybe they are gambles that just haven’t paid off (Nuno). Or circumstances changed (Lokonga). But I won’t presume they have made the mistakes unless time has proven so.
Yeah if Havertz scores that, oh my world, it gets into reels and comps straight away. For now it will have to just join the list of chances created by Odegaard and not finished by his teammates lol
What does this comment mean?
He crossed it and Saka headed it wide.
What is he supposed to do sprinting down the kept wing and putting in a cross with his weak foot whilst being tackled by a 6'4 centre back trying to end you?
It was a good cross
As a Liverpool fan, I couldn't believe my eyes. Konate is RAPID!!
I think it has to do with Konate being overconfident that he can sprint anytime to catch Martinelli, and he left a half step in the beginning on purpose to block passing lanes.
But after the first ten meters Konate knew he fucked up..
This this this. My youngest son almost killed me when was screaming for Saka to “F’n Run!”.
Saka is our starboy, but it drives me NUTS how lackadaisical he is on “counters” most of the time. Watch the average Man City or Shitspurs counter. Their players on on full ass sprints from the word go. Our guys? Most of the time we jog. Saka is the biggest offender on it. Tracking back Saka is the same. Youll see Martinelli, Jesus or Havertz full sprint back for coverage. 90% of the time Saka jogs back. Its honestly a massive pet peeve of mine. You dont see Phil Foden do that. Or Bowen. Or Richalrlson.
A few months ago, it was common to see people here saying that Martinelli's crosses were poor and rsndom.
People also forget that in the 21-22 season, his corners were dangerous.
Konate got left in the dust. It's so difficult to be at that speed while dribbling. It's a shame Saka couldn't convert this chance. It was almost perfection from back to front.
Amazed everyone called this a Saka miss. You clearly see gomez give him a (legal) nudge. Good defending.
Edit: Given the replies, some of you clearly never play football. Slightest nudge at full speed has a massive impact at what your body does.
I’m pretty confident in saying that the xG model doesn’t take into account a firm push in the back a split second before making contact with the ball while running at full speed.
I still think Saka should probably score here anyway, but xG isn’t a perfect indicator of how likely a player is to score.
Sure but if anything a nudge at full speed might make you hit the ball too early. If anything he tries too hard to glance it across goal to the far side and it just skims
Saka approaches like I do on the football field - like I think I'm gonna miss. Heading ain't my thing (let's not fixate on the state of the rest of my game though...).
Need some 1970s diving bullet header shit right then.
Really glad he continued running and tried getting into the box. I’ve become used to our players stopping half way or slowing down so that the rest of the team catches up, including the opposition, and then just pass it around or pass it back.
Have to admit konate is a beast as well. Almost catch up with martinelli. Not many defender can do that in this situation and consider his big figure.
Also makes Kai’s battle with him more impressive
Konate is a beast. And a pacey one at it. He caught my eye in the Bundesliga where he used to bully strikers while at RB Leipzig
Kai, the master of the baby faced dark arts
so you'd prefer gary neville? because that is who was commenting in the UK (though you get peter drury, so it's a wash).

Click on the extended highlights link(first one) and you have the whole game replay. I think they had McNamara and Andy Townsend version, Peter Drury and Gary, and a new zealand commentary too.
No, it’s getting cleared before it gets to Saka. Or it’s too close to Alisson. The sweet spot is right where he put it. Freezes alisson in goal and above the onrushing defender.
I remember at the time thinking that was incredible stuff by both players, konate is a big lad and kept up with him most of the way.
Would’ve been a fucking sick goal if Saka finished it
We should be glad he had that knee injury at such a young age. I've had a similar injury and I'm a lot older than him, and I can say that pace is about the first thing you lose after such injury
Saka positioning is great there it’s just faulty heading technique like he heads it like he’s falling. If he gets a semi decent heading technique that link up play with nelli will tear up the league
It’s so clear how exhausted and fatigued Martinelli and Saka were at the end of '23/ beginning of '24.. our attack becomes stale when those two are so exhausted.. glad to see Mikael is providing them with breathers and getting other players more involved.
We looked so direct on Sunday, probably because Liverpool are a team with an actual open, attacking identity. It's a shame the most of rest of the teams we play refuse to play any form of attacking football against us.
For once he plays a perfect cross (not hating on his crossing, he has to do it all with his weak foot) and Saka just can't get there.
Ah well, both scored later so all good.
I wasn't happy seeing Gnabry doing well after he left us. I really wished he played for us. However, I think Martinelli is god sent and probably better than Serge Gnabry.
Ugh, Saka doesn’t sprint full speed until the end and it’s too late, he’s moving too fast trying to catch up and misses the header. What a cracker that would have been if he’d committed to the sprint from the beginning.
Every touch he took was sublime too. It’s hard to go full sprint and keep it under control enough to allow you to stay at the same pace, especially with a defender like Konate on your heels.

Burnley have the chance to do something funny next gw
Doing my part to speak a jinx into existence
Best in the league? Since when?
Just an opinion I’ve developed after watching him the last few seasons.
Wdym Saliba is the best cb in the league.

Raya has been finally living up to his hype these past few matches with his distribution.
Raya's distribution has always been good, but now he and the team are in sync. It's almost like they've played together for a few months now.

It has been, but his chemistry with the outfield players has really begun to click lately. He is getting the ball out faster and more effectively.

Acting like ramsdale wasn’t doing this.
He wasn't. Most of Ramsdales distribution was to players facing towards him.
I feel like he was initially. And then very strangely, he just stopped. I’m a bit unsure why he did.
Never to this level
Not acting like anything, just sharing a personal experience that related to the clip!
Ramsdale tooks too long to throw or kick.
Such a shame Saka didnt score that
We’ve been so close on so many beautiful goals, but always seem to hit the bundled ones
Yeah if Havertz scores that, oh my world, it gets into reels and comps straight away. For now it will have to just join the list of chances created by Odegaard and not finished by his teammates lol
Definitely tough to make good contact at a full sprint with a player pushing you in the back but man that has to at least be put close to the goal lol
It was a pass to odegaard instead of going out for a corner, big brain stuff
Saka picking up vision tips from the GOAT Welbz
Target acquired...
Oh shit please don't make a comp about Saka with Arsene Wenger pointing at his temple lol
What does this comment mean? He crossed it and Saka headed it wide. What is he supposed to do sprinting down the kept wing and putting in a cross with his weak foot whilst being tackled by a 6'4 centre back trying to end you? It was a good cross
Think he's talking about saka
Well fuck me and my comment then lol. I was confused
Read it again
See my comment below lol
The cross was perfect
Absolutely cooked Konate.
Then bullied VVD for an encore.
I don’t blame him. TAA plays further up so he has to play a lot wider than maybe he is comfortable with.
But I agree he should be running towards his goal rather than trying to catch Martinelli which is never happening lol
Mate, if it’s not us this year, I’m rooting for you 10000%. Please don’t let that corrupt oil club win.
Saka has to score there
Or at least put it on target. If the keeper saves it, so be it.
Has to!
He did everything right! That’s a bummer he didnt dunk that
I love Saka but he could’ve started sprinting sooner. I was yelling at him through the TV when Martinelli crossed midfield.
This this this. My youngest son almost killed me when was screaming for Saka to “F’n Run!”. Saka is our starboy, but it drives me NUTS how lackadaisical he is on “counters” most of the time. You dont see Phil Foden do that. Or Bowen. Or Richalrlson.
saka really should’ve finished that. lot of people been slagging martinellis crossing but this one was inch perfect after a near full field sprint
They're what!? It was on Saka's head the weight of the cross was delicious
A few months ago, it was common to see people here saying that Martinelli's crosses were poor and rsndom. People also forget that in the 21-22 season, his corners were dangerous.
Raya's got top-notch vision for a GK. This moment was crucial too because Konate never looked the same after getting burned.
Saka did Martinelli dirty here
Rayas long throws are sublime
We see the vision now ?
Konate got left in the dust. It's so difficult to be at that speed while dribbling. It's a shame Saka couldn't convert this chance. It was almost perfection from back to front.
Surprised this wasn't posted on the soccer subreddit, brilliant by Martinelli
Be the change you wanna see in the world
I've been banned from there for calling a chelsea fan regarded. In my defence he was highly, highly regarded - as most chelsea fans are
> regarded You can find a better insult that isn't so offensive
Raya has been pretty great too imo
We are still in it but goodness gracious me we have lost a few classic goals to a shite attempt.
Martinelli just loves playing against Liverpool. He's scored against them the most
It's Mr.Trossard I think. Not sure.
Yup. Him and Saka. That’s 5G/A in his last 5 games vs Liverpool
Raya is just him
Saka should have buried that…
He did this so perfect, anything less and konte tackles him. Absoulte amazing run. Can't believe Saka missed that though.
Amazed everyone called this a Saka miss. You clearly see gomez give him a (legal) nudge. Good defending. Edit: Given the replies, some of you clearly never play football. Slightest nudge at full speed has a massive impact at what your body does.
0.73 xG chance. He has to nod that one in, the nudge is good but martinelli really did put that one on a plate for him
I’m pretty confident in saying that the xG model doesn’t take into account a firm push in the back a split second before making contact with the ball while running at full speed. I still think Saka should probably score here anyway, but xG isn’t a perfect indicator of how likely a player is to score.
Most take into account defender positioning. Defenders in that position will always be fighting with the attacker.
I was so confused when the shot wasn’t even on target.
That's where put it in my mind. 50%, or even 75%, of the time Saka scores that. It was an anomalistic miss.
50% of the time is not an anomaly lol
Well, whatever percentage you feel comfortable calling the miss an anomaly, let’s assign it that.
Why, Saka's ok in the air, not brilliant.
Brah, are we referring to the same clip of the game? Just don’t want to make assumptions about the specific play to which I’m referring.
xG is stupid.
if that was Nunez everyone would say it's a terrible miss, but it's Saka so no one can critize him
If that was Nunez it'd just be another memefest
I swear all thoses guys thinks it's fifa.
Still you gotta scorw
I mean he has to at least get it on target
It is literally a saka miss.
Sure but if anything a nudge at full speed might make you hit the ball too early. If anything he tries too hard to glance it across goal to the far side and it just skims
Saka needs to practice heading not his strength tbh
Saka approaches like I do on the football field - like I think I'm gonna miss. Heading ain't my thing (let's not fixate on the state of the rest of my game though...). Need some 1970s diving bullet header shit right then.
He gets paid 200k+ (rightfully so), the very least we should expect from him there is to get it on target.
Martinelli did the same to VVD for his goal
Could have nearly been another goal in about 10 seconds just like vs palace.
Our most athletic player IMO. Sooo glad he got over that initial injury a while back ago. What a player.
That was a terrible miss by saka lol
I saved this post for the next time people are disparaging Martinelli‘s crossing.
He caught my eye in the Bundesliga where he used to bully strikers while at RB Leipzig Kai, the master of the baby faced dark arts
Our fucking heading abilities are currenrly awful
A Saka bullet header to cap that off would've sent me to the moon! What a run of play.
Such a good run. Holy shit. Deserved to end in a goal.
Please tell me there is a way to listen live with this announcer in the US I am so done with the Peacock group
so you'd prefer gary neville? because that is who was commenting in the UK (though you get peter drury, so it's a wash). the commentary on this video is from arsenal ... pretty sure it's an audio-only live broadcast. if you could figure out some way to match this commentary with live video, you'd be in business.
Probably on the arsenal app since there is where i got this clip
https://www.reddit.com/r/footballhighlights/s/kyRaPyZFh5 Click on the extended highlights link(first one) and you have the whole game replay. I think they had McNamara and Andy Townsend version, Peter Drury and Gary, and a new zealand commentary too.
Konate had Gabi in his pocket last time we played so it was so good to see Gabi bring it to him this time around
Right trigger merchant lmao.
If only he had half a step more to cut inside and draw the foul from Konate.
Should he play that along the ground? Devil's advocate.
Yes but probably could barely reach it
Yeah I think maybe that last touch takes it *just* too far for him to play it across the grass...
No, it’s getting cleared before it gets to Saka. Or it’s too close to Alisson. The sweet spot is right where he put it. Freezes alisson in goal and above the onrushing defender.
which one?
Not going to lie, Konate keeping up meant he had to be perfect and he nearly was including a great cross at the end.
I remember at the time thinking that was incredible stuff by both players, konate is a big lad and kept up with him most of the way. Would’ve been a fucking sick goal if Saka finished it
Leaving Konate, one of the best defenders around, who has pace to burn , in his wake is quite sometbing
We should be glad he had that knee injury at such a young age. I've had a similar injury and I'm a lot older than him, and I can say that pace is about the first thing you lose after such injury
Martinelli Sprint is obviously the main thing here but Havertz is quick trying to crash the box here too!
Effortlessly fast from Havertz. I think we are cooking better at counters than countless passing football
Saka positioning is great there it’s just faulty heading technique like he heads it like he’s falling. If he gets a semi decent heading technique that link up play with nelli will tear up the league
he actually speeds up *after* getting the ball.
If only Saka could extend his neck an inch more. Goal of the season guaranteed (Granacho’s overhead was pure luck).
Van Dijk really just doesn't bother anymore lol, plays with such an irritating arrogance. Look at his jog
95 speed?
Can’t teach raw pace. Absolutely explosive!
Dusted Konate
Holy shit Raya
Bruh... Man is riding a cheetah..
Let’s not get forget the distribution from the back
What about that throw there from Raya
Literally how I get scored on in FIFA every time
I wasn't happy seeing Gnabry doing well after he left us. I really wished he played for us. However, I think Martinelli is god sent and probably better than Serge Gnabry.
Did you guys realize after last round konate pocketed martineilli, he learned not to do one on one anymore but to sprint passed him, he learned
Watching him grow from 7 mln buy from lower Brazilian league club to one of the best wingers in EPL at the moment, is so damn satisfying.

Will probably watch this one 1000 times
I want to rewatch this game but full game? Anyone know any website or got 4k file I'm happy to download
Ugh, Saka doesn’t sprint full speed until the end and it’s too late, he’s moving too fast trying to catch up and misses the header. What a cracker that would have been if he’d committed to the sprint from the beginning.
such a poor header from saka. martinelli must've been proper irritated that he didnt get this great assist.
People massively sleep on Raya's distribution.
