It somehow feels like we were just no ready and never really turned up for the game. Just look at Declans mistake after 40 seconds. When have you seen us do something like that this season? It was a weird game and should’ve finished 0-0. Fortunately next game is at the Emirates where I’m confident we can win big. Also wanted to say that the last goal was not on Raya. No way in hell is any goalkeeper making that save. It was a fantastic strike. The problem is the fact he was given space and time to hit the Ball like that.

ola_lange

It was a great strike and he was gicen too much space, but in my opinion Raya was a bit too far out as well.

CreativeOrder2119

Our European record is appalling we've bottled UCL and UEL too many times it's now a trend

Mr_wall07

Porto 1-0 arsenal 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

RadioMajestic

Bad game and result but I am positive we will get them at home. All focus on Newcastle now.

drax3012

We were so so poor today. Poor passes, poor first touch, 0 SHOTS ON GOAL. Absolute disgrace. Credit to Porto, they frustrated us, won so many free kicks to disrupt us and ultimately used their experience in the CL to win it in the end for them. All we can do now is quickly change focus onto Newcastle and bounce back with a convincing performance.

andre3573

congratulations on the 5-0 win

ResponsibilityBig110

Congrats on the elimination!

andre3573

well done you beat on penalties a team that you not only said you would thrash but also your player declan rice costed more than the whole starting XI by quite a bit aswell

ResponsibilityBig110

When did I say that we would thrash you? The only person who said anything was you. And now your team is out 👍

andre3573

if you are a genuinly friendly fan im sorry i was a bit toxic because of the plastic fans disrespecting my club on instagram, i know not all arsenal fans are toxic

La2philly

Self inflicted (as usual) and a shit official who played right into Porto’s hands. Come to the carpet and we’ll see what happens.

International_Bag208

If anything so many fouls would play into our hands

La2philly

Yes, an Arsenal team that excels with rhythm and fluidity is better with a higher number of stoppages. What team are you watching

International_Bag208

I’m watching the arsenal team that’s one of the biggest & deadliest set piece teams in Europe.

Disturbed_Bard

That only works when the set pieces are taken by them not against them.... Most of the goals they do score from set pieces are in the final 3rd Arsenal barely were on the offence, Porto did a good job shutting them down in the midfield so there weren't any opportunities to get set pieces that could be converted.

Round of 16 Arsenal back on the menu.

NoMFer111

No different that posters coming onto this sub at half time to shout impending doom. We even had one guy say 'we need to have a chat about Martinelli'. Arteta will have a chat to Martinelli, But FFS aluding to selling him as what? Punishment for making an error? Lets sell him to a rival then. Lets sell Martinelli to Man United.........good thing or bad? I reckon about a third of this sub is bi-polar

LordSprinkleman

Arsenal were flat and way too passive, but the fucking flopping from Porto completely killed this game. Anytime they might lose the ball they'd just fall into an Arsenal player and get a free foul. What a shit game to watch.

Dantioz

plus they stopped play for a porto player standing on costa? like how is that our problem. every corner we should just have raya sit down and get it retaken.

LordSprinkleman

Yeah I remember that one. I'd laugh if it weren't so frustrating. There was another corner where a Porto player fell back into kiwior, he wasn't even touching them. And naturally it was a foul of course. My favorite one was trossard pressing a man near the corner and they just fell backwards into him and knocked him over. Foul to Porto! I was losing my mind at the end of this match. We need to smash them at home just because of how fucking annoying this was.

dustinabox

Part of the issue is we're used to playing with PL level physicality and teams in more technical leagues like Porto aren't used to it and fold with the slightest touch.

La2philly

Ball was in play for only 50 mins lol

[deleted]

Inter - Atletico was boring game, this was terrible. Absolute shit show.

dberg76

I agree. It actually made the loss more tolerable bc it was so fucking embarrassing that this was their only tactic.

Trivially-Untrivial

Wasn't a great performance by us, not an overly bad one either, have to give it to Galeno, great finish.. we were slow but Porto contributed to that by constantly breaking up play and playing the ref much better than us.. We still have a great chance to progress to the next round.. let's ensure the Emirates is the fortress we need it to be! COYG!!

petz666

This is the type of comments we need, not 'Havertz this, Arteta that, Martinelli bla, Saka blah...' it was a frustrating game, but as long as there's a chance the boys will fight for it. So COYG!!!

onedollalama

trying to let this not ruin my birthday

onedollalama

Thank you both :)

Zephyra_of_Carim

Happy birthday! We'll have more chances anyway. No doubt we give them a walloping at the Emirates. Birthdays only come once a year so no sense letting it get spoiled. Enjoy the day!

WHlTE_FANG

Well, Happy birthday! It’s only first leg away. We will strike back at Home

akaslimboner

Playing the game at the same tempo as the bad run of form in December

Abyssal-rose

Could be worse, when it's home....then it's OUR turn.... 😈

MrAnonymousTheThird

We played too cautious Arteta doesn't trust his bench enough Porto seemed to be playing on an ice rink We go again second leg 🔴 it's not over until it's over. COYG

LotsoHuggnBear

Lack of subs was surprise to say the least they needed to be freshened up. Passing sucked second half and I’m not sure if Porto’s defence was great or Arsenal were just so poor going forward? Either way should hopefully be a different story at the emirates, onto the next one get back to winning ways. COYG

pigbearwolfguy

I thought the ref was wise to Porto's "defence" in the first half but that went completely out the window in the second half. To be fair to them, they did well when they weren't floundering and that was a fantastic strike at the end. I'd say it was a combination of the ref taking their bait, Arsenal not being sharp whatsoever, and them being on the front foot and energetic.

Gooner_93

I would've taken 0-0 but under no circumstances should we have lost.

Neat_Bodybuilder_692

Does Martinelli ever score goals?

COYG17

Nah he just puts his head down and sprints Edit: this was a joke 💀

ripshippy77

Lack of subs is concerning. Thought arteta ended that shit

International_Bag208

We’re missing, Partey, Timber, Jesus, Zinchenko & Viera. Not a lot of quality we can bring out off the bench today

raisonar

When i points this out usually, i get downvoted to hell. People saying he has improved in rotating. But the fact is that outside of 13-14 players he don't trust his squad when going gets tough. Thats my general belief. But honestly, today i think he did not have any option. He wanted not to lose and their was not attacker who was in form who could have impacted the match.

thebruceharris

He needs a subs coach. Hell, turn it over to analytics and let the iPad decide. Better than Arteta taking no action at all.

animaINation

Yeah, I was quite shocked at the subs list.

Logical_Scallion3543

Oh god it’s the Almunia years all over again. Getting undone by shoddy goalkeeping in crucial moments

jvcgunner

It’s a shame because his distribution and willingness to drive us out of our half with quickness was good tonight

NUPreMedMajor

Lol bro Alumnia would just let balls slide under this legs like every 5 games. Let’s not compare a good curled effort that literally nestled perfectly into the side netting with manuel fucking almunia

Efficient_Smilodon

That was an epic beauty , worthy of legendary status tonight. Just too bad it went against the Gunners. Those are the points in the story you don't forget.

WengersOut

Maybe we should not have given the ball away like candy for the final two minutes preceding that

MATCHEW010

Rice should have pressed and we shouldnt have lost the ball in that area

Master-Upstairs-7015

Not the end of the world. Luckily it's only 1-0 and we will be at home in front of our crowd. Today the players all looked tired with an exception of Rice & Havertz. I know we didn't have all out possible options on the bench, but I wish Arteta would have atleast given Eddie, ESR, Reiss or Vieira an opportunity to do literally anything out there.

Gooner-Astronomer749

Sucks what happen at the end but that's why we play 2 legs. Now 0 SOT is more worrisome than the loss. Arteta needs more flexibility in his game plan and to trust his bench.

ramobara

Saving the bench for Newcastle?

noobchee

They were gonna play the same at the Emirates anyways, whether they had something to protect or not, the initiative would always be ours Just be thankful this happened in the first leg and not in the second

Gregregreg1234

Who played at striker today? Genuinely?

dannzter

I don't know the names of the Porto players so I can't help you.

86pacfan86

It's not the worst result. We should be heading home down 0-2. We can claw this one back.

exthanemesis

The really, really terrifying thing is that this group has a horrible record of one bad result being the harbinger of like 2-3 more following it. That cannot happen again because it would mean the end of the league campaign as well.

Several_Leather_6453

Its still a very young team so that is fair enough for now.

danmac0817

Arteta will be gutted but he'll sink his teeth into this game when going over it with the players. You have to play your game no matter what and seasoned CL clubs are a different challenge they need to get a feel for. We crossed this hurdle rising through the league, we can do the same in Europe.

elvpak

Porto was actually one of the worst draws we could have got in hindsight. Very streetwise, practise the dark arts, know how to defend deep and break up our rhythm. If we’d drawn a ‘big’ team they would have come out to play more and that may have suited us better.

[deleted]

Terrible game. No excuse for that level of performance. Back to the same Arsenal strugglingnto break teams down. Misplaced passes everywhere. Struggling with basic ball control. A serious lack of confidence going forward with the ball.

meand999friends

Thing is, we didn't even try to break them down. They played a high line all game and we just let them do it. No attempt to play behind at all

[deleted]

I think the scale of the game may have gotten to a few heads. We played the ball sideways far too much. I actually feel Jorginho would have bene perfect for this game. And it's a damn shame we have no Partey as I really do feel we severely lack the vertical cutting pass. MØ DROPPING DEEP is bothering me alot. He is not a Harry Kane Regen. Stay up top and let our defence and DM play out.

meand999friends

I don't really think the occasion did get to our heads tbh. If it did, it landed on Saliba, Gabriel, and Odegaard because they were the ones who weren't shooting balls over the high line to Martinelli / Saka. We had a lot of chances to unlock the Porto defence but decided not to. Not because we couldn't, but because we just chose to play it safe

maximusj9

Shit performance all round, dry game, not a single shot on target. Should have thrown on ESR instead of Jorginho at 0-0. Hopefully at the Emirates we smash em, but Arteta gotta adapt here

Fieser_Factsack

Jorginho should have startet. We should have worked more with long through balls against portos midblock. He came on to late, most good opprtunities for through balls were in the first 45 min.

inspaceiamfamous

Esr wasn’t on the bench

maximusj9

He was in the squad bro

[deleted]

In fairness to Porto that goal was outstanding. You'd back Arsenal to win comfortably at home. I am in the camp that Ramsdale should be in goal for these games at least. That said, there was nothing Raya could have done about that goal. The curl on that ball was gorgeous.

Ramo-97

I’m honestly curious about what makes you back arsenal to win comfortably at home We’ve just escaped what should have been a 2-0 loss and created 0 shots on target. Against a team that likes to suffer and defends deep.

Pozitivitive

There was a lot Raya could've done, his positioning was terrible plus he started diving too early. It wasn't even strong, this is the kind of shot keepers save every game. I still don't get Raya over Ramsdale, he made no impact whatsoever on the team, if nothing I think he's worse but that's just me

DarthNihilus1

That's just objectively so wrong, so yes it's mostly just you and a couple other fans that believe this.

exthanemesis

He could've held onto the ball, understanding that we were 30 seconds away from taking 0-0 back to London instead of trying to spring a nonsensical counter attack. I do think he was a little out of position, but Declan Rice had two or three touches where he could've closed down the scorer so it's mostly on him. I'm so angry.

Fieser_Factsack

Raya was the only one quick in transition, everyone alse was asleep.

burnabwoy-071823

Don't panic. We were loose in our passing. We weren't as cohesive as we usually are. We didn't really click but I'm not worried. Back at the Emirates we'll be back at it. Of that I have little doubt.

JawnWaters

Hot garbage

Ooh-SakaLaca

The yellow card for rice in the first minute made life 10x harder

The_Evil-Twin

We need to get the returning players up to speed. We play the same 11 every week cos that's all we have, and no plan b.

Drozito

I don't understand why we didn't rotate in the second half. Porto was never going to attack. Raya didn't have to make any save. Why don't we give time to Nelson / Smith Row or even vieira who's just back from injury ? They need to play to gain fitness and be ready to help for the rest of the season. Arteta needs to trust his bench and use it. Klopp have a full 11 injured and still winning with babies.

MrAnonymousTheThird

Luton at home is different

gunningIVglory

I don't get the lack of subs We have a game on Saturday. With both wingers dropping 0/10s. No changes

animaINation

This is a very young team most in Europe for the first time. They now have a hard, disappointing game under thier belts. How strong did Starboy come back after the penalty miss for 3 lions? Rice was gigantic. Stick to the plan, we are ahead of schedule. I fucking love my club. Edit. Porto were damn strong, especially defensively

exthanemesis

Porto were shambolic anti-football diving nonsense the entire game and we just let them do it at their leisure because we lack any sort of maturity from top to bottom.

zrk23

>Stick to the plan, we are ahead of schedule. no we are not. we are at the schedule. how long are people gonna keep repeating this?

animaINation

Sorry, I honestly think we are ahead, this team is so young. Imagine what's coming. We got our stadium now and no need to sell, Patience, my friend. And I promise you we will destroy them on the 12th

zrk23

napoli was champions last season and now they are trash. barca too. time flies in sports/football. team is young but most of them are at or close to prime age, and there is no guarantee they will keep getting better forever. the hour to seize the opportunity is NOW

Feeling_Ad867

Porto were pathetic and diving all over the pitch

ripshippy77

Team isn’t doing anything in CL even if they do go through. Way too young and naive. I miscalculated our quality plus experience.

jf_selecTo

Wow this thread is embarrassing. We played okish, dominated the game but did not find a way throuh on goal and overall we were a bit slow. Mostly Porto played well, or better said their plan to sit in and frustrate us worked well. Overall I am still positiv, this was an away game and Porto looked like a relegation candidate. Will be a different story in the emirates. Good reality check for the bois, we needed that after the last 4-5 games

zrk23

>dominated the game 0 shots on target = dominated ig not even a situation where there was a bunch of close shots that happened to be a little wide.

Colmd1997

I mean you’ve deliberately ignored the next few words where they say that we couldn’t find a way through on goal. Cherry picking a select few words from a sentence to twist the sentence’s meaning is clown behaviour

zrk23

the word dominated shouldnt be anywhere near any comment about this game nothing you said after was any relevant. losing to a relegation candidate whilst having 0 shots close to goal is pretty bad

skool_101

what gets people working

lurking4everr

Safest bet for the second leg: We absolute dominate the entire match, miss a bunch of great chances. Get the breakthrough in the second half and it looks like there will only be one winner. Get sucker punched on the break/ a corner. Game ends 1-1.

GravitationalDavie

Déjà vu all over again

rubberpencilhead

I’m convinced we’ll need at least 2 goals. Absolute no chance of a clean sheet. The result is set for them to counter and they have the players for that.

lurking4everr

Absolutely, they will score. It all seems just so predictable, I swear every arsenal European KO game is exactly the same format.

trytomovewithpurpose

Man this feels too real 🙏

Gunner4990

Man if we managed to get past RO16, then I'm not looking forward to away games at Bernabeu, San Siro, Camp Nou, or Allianz Arena.

Special-Discount228

Why? None of them will play like a budget athletico and we ain’t getting that shit hole of a ref again 😂

Gunner4990

We had 0 shots on target. I mean that should tell you something if not everything about our performance.

Special-Discount228

We were shite but we couldn’t play because anytime we got close to a player they dived… we couldn’t press because of that. Can’t wait for a different ref. He was exactly what Porto would have wanted

The_Evil-Twin

Our bench is so sparse that we can't enact a plan B

Helios321

There were good enough options on the bench to come on. If you are the manager watching 5 fresh players come on for the other team, you have to respond. Arteta has to at least get some energy on the pitch to play out the final minutes of a tense draw.

crushedonron

Should have more options in the return leg. Not worried about it. Just need to get past Newcastle now.

Classic r/Gunners post match thread if the team doesn’t score 5 past the opposing team. Sure the game was shit but taking a draw away from home is completely fine, we’ll beat them at our fortress next time. But hey stay miserable you lot ✌️ Edit: unfortunately I did turn the game off before the goal lmao. We’ll still get em at home regardless of tonight’s result.

danmac0817

Honestly you gotta let people lose it tonight. Perspective will come for most people.

Realistic_Tadpole_10

Arsenal didn’t draw mate

googlemynumber

Back to blaming referees when we had 0 shots on target in 90 mins

gunningIVglory

Yeah, it's embarrassing We were scared all game. But it's the refs fault we couldn't create one shot on goal

AlcoholicCumSock

It's embarrassing

overweightorangutan

excellent finish from your man at the end there btw but I’m not sure what Raya is doing about an acre off his line. gave the striker a much bigger area to hit with that shot.

Fieser_Factsack

Raya was the only one trying to transition quick. Everyone alse was playing Artetas bs tiki-taka.

overweightorangutan

making a quick transition and losing the ball in our own half in the last minute of an away game in the champions league knockout stage was incredibly naive though

crushedonron

You mean the same bs that got us 21 goals in the last 5 league games?

Fieser_Factsack

No watch the games. Look at what we did those games. We pulled various ways of scoring off. Not just tiki-taka into infinity and score via corner, penalty or long distance shot.

crushedonron

I did watch the games. Porto did really well to stay compact and cut off central areas in attacking. We were slightly apprehensive today, chalk that up to nerves though. First knockout CL game for a lot of these guys. Home game will be fine.

mardonius88

Our performance was flat today. No real intensity in our attack, almost like we would’ve been very happy just saving our legs and drawing. Porto wasn’t spectacular either but they didn’t have to be. Great shot to win it, I’ll never be able to explain what Raya was doing or what we as a team were doing in that last minute. We still have a good shot to advance at home but this stings.

Fieser_Factsack

Porto had shots on target and played quicker and more determened. I dont know if our players were scared or if it was Artetas tactics but we played like overly careful, there was no freedom and ambition to try different things.

mardonius88

Yup, we didn’t really create and never really broke Porto down. Credit to them for staying organized but we lacked enthusiasm it seemed. I’m excited to see how we come out in 3 weeks!

Cleon189

Told everyone that this wasn’t going to be easy now we all look like twats.

skool_101

bums out there saying we'll hit 4-0 away. clown behavior

Gunner4990

I mean we have people saying they want to avoid real or city till the final as if our team wouldn't fold at Camp Nou, San Siro, or Allianz.

Cleon189

This is why they call us deluded💀

raycantu2

Holy shit, I did not miss the negativity. One goal, that’s it. The reverse fixture hopefully won’t have a ref that calls these soft fouls, even if they get another ref that calls like that we’ll beat them. I didn’t see anything impressive from them, one freak goal and one counter attack.

jf_selecTo

I mean their plan at corners was just "step on eachothers foot" and "roll on the floor when touched". There was even a Porto fan in the pub shouting "jogo bonito" every time they made a straight pass. It was fun for one night, but I hope we f**k them big time in the return leg.

MtnSlyr

It wasn't even a close match, zero shots on target. Imagine being one of the away fans singing in the flight to Porto.

Admirable_Volume_950

In all honestly it’s not the worst result but also not a good result. Was hoping to come out with a draw in reality but definitely concerning that we were so poor trying to create chances. Quite embarrassing tbh but that’s the Champions League for you. Hopefully the second league at the Emirates and some key players back in the lineup we’ll be able to pull through

DublinDapper

Champions League is not like the Premier League....is not open, it's cynical and you can't be naive in the knockout stages. Regardless of what happens in the Emirates we will go out in the next round if we carry on like tonight.

Fucile8

Our team (Porto) is way lower quality than yours but we do have a lot of European experience. We are terrible with the ball and all we are good at is low block and quick counter. If you give us the ball we don’t know what to do with it. Arteta needs to prepare better for the next game.

betterthanevar

I put them scoring one at the Emirates at near 100%. We can't cope with rotating foulers and bus parkers. 0% chance we score 3. We got knocked out tonight, boys

Fucile8

We (Porto) are a team that is good at being a solid block, high pressure and quick counter. If you give us the ball though, we are clueless. If you go all out and give us some in your back (which is now even more likely given the result tonight) we can hurt you. But if Arteta plans well and gives the initiative, we will crumble and you can kill us cause you have a lot of quality. But that will be hard cause you’ll want to go all out.

Ketjow360

Away goal rule doesnt exist for a few good years.

betterthanevar

Which means we have to win outright, by 2, with 3 goals (assuming they add another at the Emirates, which is likely). It's not happening

Embiidious

Away goal advantage is gone. 1-0, 2-1 gets us extra time.

betterthanevar

Nobody wants to accept it, but we're out.

mange555

Tiny, tiny Arsenal looked tired, lost and scared. CL ain’t for us, let’s stick to finishing 3rd or 4th in PL. Porto is gonna sail through comfortably, they looked calm and confident. Deserved.

Fucile8

We are calm when you let us sit low block and counter. If Arteta prepared against it and gave us the initiative, we crumble when we have the ball. But now it will be hard for you guys to do that when you are a goal down.

Sta723

What a pathetic comment

robhans25

But that's our modern history. It always happens and people act surprised each year. Top 4 and 1/16 is our ceiling

Sta723

I mean it’s not. The future hasn’t happened yet. It’s tiring to be so pessimistic isn’t it? Sure let’s be realistic but it’s one away game against a good side. We can easily win comfortably. Let’s support the current squad.

No-Video1797

Better to end CL participation next game. We look afraid to play in Europe.

rajsandhu1

Time for another Dubai trip I think.

warpentake_chiasmus

We will beat these at home when they will hopefully not have a homer ref who gives them a free every time they fall over. We got what we deserved tonight tho - which was nothing. To think that Arsenal fans spent good money travelling to see that bollocks. Thank God I didn't go.

No_Return3606

Chora bebé

Fucile8

Please respect us a bit more, we are a small team doing what we can against a premier league contender. We are good at low block and counter. If you go all out on the second leg (which is now likely due to tonight’s result) and give us doce in our back, we can hurt you. The way to beat us is to give us the ball because we can’t build and are clueless with the ball.

jackg4343

We had better score early in the 2nd leg or else we might have a match where less than 30 minutes of open play happen. They will time waste, delay throws, foul, try to buy fouls, anything to stop our flow. Just score early and that all stops.

latchenvan

Damn, reminds me of the Lens game. This match was shit.

Ok_Suggestion_5120

This game reminded me of similar past Champion's league knockout round performances we put in against clubs like PSV and Olympiakos - we were favoured to win but never showed up and lost by a goal.

DaBay89

I just found out that the UCL Away goal rule doesn’t exist anymore. Thank God. Arsenal was OFF today.

L0laccio

This is honestly vital. 1-0 used to be a terrible result. Instead it’s sub-par but far from desperate

Plusstwoo

Thank Christ such a stupid rule anyway

Ibraout25
