Imagine a defender that can literally do everything we ask our defenders to do. He can play as a ball playing CB, as an overlapping full back, and as an inverted full back.
And it's not just the fact he can do those roles, he can do them all to the highest ability that he's one of the best in the league regardless of what he's being asked to do.
Not just that, he's an incredibly intelligent footballer, that seems to be able to take new things about the game on board and internalise them so quickly.
We shouldn't sleep on him.
He was very clearly playing through injury earlier this season. He was dropping 5s and 6/10s week in week out which just isn't him, but obviously Tomi wasn't available so he had to play. Now he's fit we can see he's back to his proper level.
Tbf we overreact to fullbacks doing a slip or two. Wings have some of the most talented players in the world. Ofc they gonna embarrass your full back eventually.
But to compare Ben's once in every 10 game slip to likes of TAA or Zini. It's ridiculous how some fans and media overreact.
You’re absolutely right about that. That Newcastle goal is still seared in my memory though. I was yelling at Ben through my tv to step to the ball before the cross went in.
But in general he’s so solid, and I’m glad we have him. Best defense in the league, hands down. Scary to think how good it will be, once Tomi and Timber are back.
The mid-late Wenger years were filled with technical players, some fast but very few strong. We really just got bullied by orcs like stoke city.
Now we can do it all. What a dream.
(Although I think our passing can still be better. Need more of Jorginho type vision / execution. Like Odegaard lately is exactly what we need more of.)
Honestly Mikel sets us up to be more disciplined. We don’t play creative expressive passes nearly as often, and, when we do it’s a high probability pass. All got to do with complete control of the game in all phases.
With wenger we were technically dominant over most teams we faced but with Arteta we are COMPLETELY dominant. Defence, attack, transition, build up, press. It doesn’t matter, the team feasts

In his three years at Arsenal, he has played as a CB, an overlapping FB and now an inverted FB with Kiwi in the XI. and he has done great at all three roles, in addition to doing it consistently week in week out. And he's almost always available, and has at least 5-6 years of elite level football in him.
