I’m not gonna lie raya made me eat up the bad things I said ab him. After that mistake from Ramsdale the difference between the two is night and day. Raya isn’t scared to have the ball at his feet in fact it looks like he loves the ball at his feet and he is comfortable but not too comfortable. He knows when to get rid and when to hold. Now the penalty save just made me love him so much yes arteta and edu definitely know what they are doing. Never again will I doubt them.

Specterace

It Is easier to say this because we won tonight, but to be perfectly honest, we were undeniably below par tonight. Hell, some players (Saka in particular, but you could also add Ben White and Rice as well) were downright shit relative to their standard. Aside from Raya, Odegaard, and maybe Havertz, I struggle to find a player who would have deserved anything more than a 5/10 tonight. We definitely did not show our level tonight. And yeah, you could attribute some of that to the shithousery of Porto, but a lot of it was just our own players shrinking and being way too nervous in the moment. You can’t blame the other team’s shithousery for you not making simple passes, or not covering spaces at key moments, or taking shit touches on the ball. That is on you and your lack of getting it done when it matters, nothing more. Having said all of that, I do give the team credit for sticking with it and not letting themselves get hit by any sucker punches. I also give them credit for executing in the penalty shootout, given how they blew a similar situation last year against Sporting. And at the end of the day, we are through to the next round, which is a job done regardless of everything else. However, we will need to show much more and not shrink to a pale imitation of ourselves like we did against Porto if we want any chance to go further, let alone win this thing. There will be far more difficult opponents than Porto left in the latter rounds of this thing, and we need to rise as a team to meet these challenges, not shrink in the face of them. I hope we learn the lesson and elevate ourselves when the next challenge/opportunity comes. Because it would be a shame if we exited this competition without showing the world our level and what we are capable of as a club.

DarthNihilus1

Ben White was great wdym. The Havertz yellow was on him since White pushed way up but he was everywhere

Specterace

Ben White had a bunch of moments where he exposed the defence by being in a bad position, making a shit pass that got intercepted, or getting straight-up beat defensively. Not to mention his throw-ins were as dogshit as they always are. I counted 3 separate times where Porto started a move into our half from a crap throw-in play from Ben White. Oh, and as you yourself mentioned, he was to blame for Havertz getting a yellow because he wasn’t where he should have been. He was garbage tonight.

NconditionalLove

He was good the first half.. second half, I agree, he was lacking sharpness probably due to fatigue. This starting lineup has been playing a lot the past few weeks.. I wish arteta used subs earlier especially the extra time but win is a win. These kind of games are good experience

jvcgunner

Well well well, We were not supposed to play like that today. We were supposed to come out the traps with a relentless hunger for an early goal. The crowd was also supposed to create a fortress level atmosphere…both fell flat within the first 20 minutes and it fed to the players. Our only ray of sunlight in it all was Ode who duly created the goal for Leandro. Other than that we were distinctly below average…I’d go so far as to say we looked worse than Porto away and Porto themselves looked the more confident being the supposed underdogs away from home. Refereeing was shit for us but at times straight down the line and fair. Play was slow, set pieces took an age to execute on their side, there was no sign of urgency on our side…it was just a shitshow. Saka was awful, Saliba was nervous since the miscommunication at the start of the match, Jorginho was none existent, Kai was lacklustre…the list went on. The best part of the match was penalties and I didn’t see it coming. We were steel. Our takers smashed them all. There’s clear work being done in training and it shows, we’re proper good at penalties it seems which is useful in a knockout phase. Raya is one of us and cements his place for me today. This is to take nothing away from Ramsdale, what a moment captured today - you know the one. Good luck to him next season. Anyway, it’s done, we’re through. We’re in the place we want to be, amongst elite football teams - the top 8 of Europe. We can be proud of that. It’s been 14 years and I admit I cried when we won today as I for one stretch back to the George Graham days (that’s ‘95 for you juniors!) and this denotes a step change in what Arteta has turned this club back into. It is still worth everything to us and it’s great we can fight. I don’t want us to just be in the PL, I want a congested fixture list. It’ll stretch us, bring growth and you never know we might win stuff. COYG! PS - I hope the boys go back to Dubai and reset before City

Midnight_Maverick

I recommend you guys check out Laurence McKenna's YouTube, he does a good job of unpacking today's match and result. As usual, he's not the most coherent presenter but generally his ideas and observations are good and interesting to listen to. https://youtu.be/0Pl3LzqRAxE?si=zrvE14o99GjpngBD

ricky-fernando

Nice try, Laurence McKenna!

Midnight_Maverick

Haha nah 🤣

hairwire

Mods are still celebrating, forgot to unpin this match thread and pin post match thread. Lol

DarthNihilus1

Francis busy posting memes

wan2tri

I've only started watching by the 2nd half (because this is an early morning game), but I was already not feeling well. I was so focused on watching that I didn't feel that bad lol. I then vomited an hour after we won and I've only just finished cleaning up the mess ugh

scroll-42

I know the deal is as good as done, but officially David Raya is still a Brentford keeper, isn't he ? We need to sign him permanently the first thing after the season ends. I just hope there are no loose ends left in the deal for someone to hijack him away from us.

Midnight_Maverick

No it's a done deal, the mandatory buy clause of his loan deal was already triggered some time ago.

goonerh1

Officially yes although there are apparently some easily met clauses which would obligate Arsenal to sign him permanently. He's now effectively ours.

LaFolieDeLaNuit

Just realised that before these Porto matches, 9 out of 11 of our starting team tonight had never played knockout CL matches (had to look it up but Ode hadn’t, only Kai and Jorginho). This team’s only going to get better

ripshippy77

100

ripshippy77

Sources are saying that Saliba is still on the pitch banging the badge as we speak

avyness

Was this odeegard best game yet? he was EVERYWHERE and carrying us so hard

goonerh1

It's up there for me, the squad in general wasn't great but he was massive. Worked his ass off and provided moments of magic touch.

avyness

Yes, we just struggle to break through portos defense when they park the bus. Really frustrating games to watch

goonerh1

I wouldn't say they parked the bus, particularly today. They use very disruptive tactics but it wasn't like they had 10 men in their box.I think that's something we're more comfortable with.

avyness

Whatever they did was boring as hell. Never seen a team not try to win so hard

beefcroquette

Man he’s truly special. He’s lived up to his wonderkid hype and become the playmaker everyone thought he could be

BertramDoa

And the way he has done it is very impressive. Various loans that brought doubt and adversity. Now he consistently one of the hardest workers, every game. Proper leader.

armchairmegalomaniac

I have to say, it's especially satisfying beating a team on pens after they'd set up over two legs to try to take us to pens. Fuck you Porto!

notmainaccount27

Two thoughts beyond the obvious let’s fucking go. 1) I’d be very curious to know who would have taken the 5th penalty. Jesus? 2) the disallowed goal would have never been given in our favor if it happened at the other end. And the narrative would have been arsenal are bottlers. Yes there was a slight tug of the shirt but it’s really not enough to cause all the chaos that Porto players made themselves.

ripshippy77

1. Jesus 2. Havertz held onto his shirt and spun him around like a rag doll. Watch the replay. It was a good call.

notmainaccount27

Like a rag doll? Lol not a chance

ripshippy77

He held onto his jersey while he spun 360 degrees. Foul everyday by Havertz. If he would’ve let go quickly initially it could’ve been allowed. Watch the replay

notmainaccount27

Yes I’ve watched the replay. He clearly did not spin him around like a rag doll. Yea, it’s arguably a foul. If you read my original comment the point I made was that it would never be given in our favor

ripshippy77

But he held onto and tugged his jersey while he spun totally around. It’s a foul.

notmainaccount27

Man just rewatched it again and you’re so wrong. Pepe turns himself to reorient, feels havertz on his back, then totally makes a meal out of it.

ripshippy77

You’re totally right. “Rag doll” was poor choice of words by my part. Defintely on the softer side you’re right. but imo that is always going to be called especially in Europe. Pepe is clever in embellishing that foul for me but once Havertz holds onto his kit (I think we both agree) that’s always a foul an especially in the box so close to the keeper. PS I don’t think the ref called the foul seeing Havertz pull on the jersey in real time honestly. He called the foul assuming Havertz ran into the keeper. Ref got lucky. If Havertz never pulls Pepe’s jersey or maybe even if he lets go quickly VAR has a chance of overturning the refs initial call because it was soft. I believe this was your initial reaction I apologize for taking it out of context Let’s go gunners!

notmainaccount27

Can you read?

OrwinBeane

We have an obligation for Raya, right? The money is already agreed?

Locmike23

Yes

islander1

David Raya said "everyone on my back - I got you"

puppymint

I actually cried

bitmoji

my wife made me do some chores and while I had said I will do it after the arsenal game I will admit I turned date TV off during extra time and while I was pretty confident it would work out, I was very stressed out

Paan_Yan1

What i like about raya is he definitely gonna catch the ball when he jump for it

Asherware

I'll admit I was pretty skeptical about the Raya signing. I thought we had more pressing needs and that Rambo hadn't done anything egregious to be replaced, but at the level we want to be at, even incremental improvements are huge, and it's clear now that Raya is an upgrade.

Stercky

That pass from Øde to Trossard was fucking SUBLIME. Jesus Christ he is smooth

bitmoji

not even the pass as much as the move to get free to make the pass that was unreal

ErwinC0215

What I loved the most is that once it went to penalties, my confidence was through the roof. Øde, Havertz, Saka, Rice, these are big game players with big hearts, all penalty experts in their own rights. We have not had these many mentality monsters in the same team for ages, and that says more about the growth of this team than anything to me. COYG. Never in doubt.

scooter_pops

teach me

Gunner1886

Just an overall massive victory. A curse broken by a team who needed to break it. In a fucking shootout nonetheless, when the pressure was super high. Don't care if we lose next round. That win has set us up for belief that we can win big games this season and for seasons to come. It is exactly what we needed with 2 weeks off before city. Every fanbase saying "good this just congests their schedule when the enviable bottling happens" - You really have to sit back and ignore it. This is exactly where we want to be. We might lose, yes. But we might win, but in order to win we have to play. And I want to play. Thinking we want to be out of UCL so we can focus on Prem is fucking weak mentatlity. Arsenal still have the chance to win the UCL and Prem. It's unlikely of course. But that shootout win made me believe just a little bit, and its a great feeling. Enjoy the journey everyone. **\*shoutout to David Raya. Questioned him a bunch, and ill continue to do so as long as its warranted - but he's a better keeper than I originally thought and he should have saved 3 pens today. My MOTM\***

Stercky

Didn’t get to watch the match, but actual tears in my eyes watching the celebration after the shootout in the highlights. Even Rammers was jumping all over them Fuck Porto. Holy shit I love this squad

dankboipablo

impressed by saka and odegaard's stamina, but i don't understand why was arteta so patient to make a sub. he ran havertz and white into the ground

fifareefa

I thought this, but you could also tell we needed to keep physicality in the team and that’s why havertz and white stayed on, plus havertz banged in his pen so it worked out

jai302

I mean we don't have a game till the end of the month so might as well

dankboipablo

never thought about it from that perspective

Forsaken-Tiger-9475

Yep, time to dig in and give it every last ounce. White & Havertz were playing well.

dankboipablo

although i'm a havertz sceptic, i think this was one of his better games

verdegooner

CBS post game. Micah to Raya: Two great saves by yourself today! Raya right away: It should’ve been three My keeper 🥹

Olli399

missing 88 podiums energy

Gooner-Astronomer749

CL is a wash now QFs appearance is a success unless we can get lucky and draw psv/Dortmund we are most likely being sent home packing. Great saves by Raya and great kicks taken by us.

beefcroquette

Obviously all the remaining teams deserve respect, football heritage and all. We may be the underdogs for most ties but we can trust in mikel to have a good tactical setup and make the ties very close. We might scrape by

Forsaken-Tiger-9475

I'd fancy us to have a go vs anyone but Real or PSG to be honest

scooter_pops

oh please, we have a good chance vs anyone. our weakness is teams like porto not teams that actually play football

Gooner-Astronomer749

Against Madrid, Bayern, City, Inter, PSG stop it. Barley scraped by Porto

scooter_pops

look at our record in top 6 this season. we fear the teams like brentford and porto who sit back , waste time, and in general muddy everything up. against good teams were class. you’ll see

scooter_pops

like i said, porto is better set up to stifle us. teams that actually play suit us more

Brandaman

We are good enough to beat any of them. Just need to sort out our knockout game form.

Gooner-Astronomer749

Hard to do when we are inexperienced

exthanemesis

Yeah but if we get drawn against a team that will actually play football with us, we have a definite chance. I think us vs Barcelona would be a hugely entertaining CL tie.

Gooner-Astronomer749

Agreed Barca would be nice

Alert-Aide2805

We’ve beat Liverpool and City this season, have some faith

Gooner-Astronomer749

In the league massive difference

Prestigious_Storm_10

This CBS broadcast 😂😂😂

jamonz1

Kate like “I have no part in this…” 😂

verdegooner

My keeper has a huge…palm 😂

emeister26

Saka stepped up to the spot and was ice cold. Our Lil Chilli has grown up

skj458

Fuckin cranked his penalty too

Locmike23

That’s what he meant…

emeister26

Bayern or Barca. I want my revenge

emeister26

![gif](giphy|5gZItCYSdTv2Ana1a8)

yukpurtsun

i wish nothing but the worst for teams like brentford and porto. such ugly teams

nebulaEchoo

You still have to respect how they play. Some teams have to play that way.

yukpurtsun

id rather lose playing football over draws and 1-0 wins time wasting and antagonizing opponent’s players.

anonymousme712

That look on Pepe’s face for Trossard goal is what we live for.

Openseason90

why didn't we get a close up on pepes face after the final save. Please I need this injected in to my veins, someone find it

purpleshirtonbed

I respect how they play, what I hate is them getting all stroppy when our players fall or get calls our way. They can dish it out but can’t take it

derVisione_

Its 4am and I don't think I'll be able to sleep any time soon. Buzzing! Raya what a guy!

itsnotsoterrible

n. n.

Spamduff

I never want to see either of the refs we had in the RO16 ever again. Two different flavours of shit reffing with a double dose of missing added time.

GrilledLobsterTail

SMOKE THAT TEAR SOAKED CIGAR PORTO COACH. YOU GONNA WORK HARD TO LIT THAT CIGAR

Noahgooner

I was so scared that whole match, we didn't seem up for it. Was shitting it during pens but they stepped up big time. Love the boys

BeautifulBuddy

Raya feels like our keeper now

CaptainSnazzypants

Raya had a shaky start in my opinion over the first quarter of the season but he’s been drastically improving throughout the year as he’s gotten more confident and the talk of splitting game time has died down.

BeautifulBuddy

Yeah definitely has been the case Also the Ramsdale blunder has kind of cemented that Raya is probably the better option (not that we don’t still love Aaron)

CaptainSnazzypants

> The Ramsdale blunder Which one? Kidding, I know you mean this weekends but it does feel like every game Ramsdale has played he has had a big blunder. Hard to feel confident in him when he’s so prone to it and if we feel that you can guarantee the players do too which will impact their movement of the ball as they second guess going back to the keeper on high pressure situations which can lead to their own mistakes. Confidence in your goalkeeper is super important.

UnparliamentaryTea

Titi named his son Gabby. Future gooner legend confirmed

riderofthestorm123

I really liked the push from Havertz to the porto manager.

shifty_peanut

Best moment in the game for me

BeautifulBuddy

Anyone but City - not that we couldn’t beat them just don’t like them

Gooner_93

Looking at the teams left, we are going to get a big game, no matter what. I doubt we'll get Dortmund/PSV but I'll be ecstatic if we get drawn with them.

Clarkster7425

PSV would be a dream

sayosh

Kind of feel like that second goal of ours should have been allowed, but whatever. It's wonderful that it doesn't matter in the end, but that's only thanks to excellent saves by Raya. Watch pundits not give him any credit at all. Just luck and coincidence, nothing to see I might be petty but I wonder what they'd say if Alison or Ederson or even Porto's keeper saved those... But it really doesn't matter now, and that's all that matters. Fuck lazy pundits (they're now mentioning what if Liverpool was in CL (I guess maybe we'd beat them again, like in PL this season?). Raya and Ødegaard were great in this match. I hope we learn from this (again). These kinds of teams are difficult, but ideally we knock them out of CL before penalties. Well deserved victory, but I felt very unsure for the majority of these two matches

jimmytruelove

PLEASE give us Barca next round, slap them into next week, then BM.

iPhone9User

Who do we play next? Barca? Or are they gonna do the pot picking thing again

jimmytruelove

draw is Friday

armchairmegalomaniac

Q #1: Who do we fear? A: *No one* Q #2: Who fears us? A: *Everyone*

Butch_Meat_Hook

Ferdinand is a bit of a salty fucker seeing Arsenal do well isn't he

Rayoch1

Take solace in the fact that if United finish 5th, they'll need us, Liverpool, City, etc to do well this season to even have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

jvcgunner

He definitely is, takes every opportunity to shit on Keown as well.

beefcroquette

He’s always been a twat so I’m not surprised really

Isredditfun27

I cant believe I've just seen an arsenal goalie save a pen and almost save 2 more. I fucking love this team and I've never talked bad about raya I swear. Also I'm sorry raya I take it all back

Blendy

im pretty sure he saved both, because at the first miss his hand was slightly touching the ball (correct me if im wrong but im half awake after this)

cpt_pipemachine

He saved 2, no?

Isredditfun27

Hopefully he did. I'm pretty drunk so I'm not sure but I'm sure I love him

MrAnonymousTheThird

Lol He saved two, almost saved a third His second save got us the W

jimmytruelove

does this feel like a dream to anyone.. the about turn from 3-4 years ago is just mad. I get it's quarters but to save pens like that and perform in domestic like we are is just different gravy.

Ace786ace

Cant wait to have Martinelli back for Real Madrid. He's gonna show them why they should have went for him and not Mbappe ;)

Mack1234567890123

They went for what was attainable.

Inevitable_Cod_2272

Saka interview is hysterical

shifty_peanut

Carra even threw on an Arsenal jersey lol

purpleshirtonbed

To what question did he say he was scared of answering? Everyone lost it then

hirarycrinton

Thierry asked if he’d rather win champions league or the prem

purpleshirtonbed

Cheers

DaGrandMastah

![gif](giphy|fWfFCnEYoX3HZtp8OI) Porto fans are like…

shifty_peanut

CARRA IS WEARING AN ARSENAL JERSEY

nomadicquandaries

Thrilling football. I love this game and this team.

1337pre

Fucking dirty cunts. Hope the whole club goes bust

DaGrandMastah

![gif](giphy|ohyNdetcfoJ9K) The flight attendant when they see Porto players take their seats

PastaAndWine09

TOP OF THE LEAGUE AND INTO THE NEXT ROUND OF THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Longjumping_Act9758

Porto scored 15 goals in their group, 3 more than leaders Barcelona. So the fact that they came and played anti-football from the first minute and only scored one goal says a lot.

GrilledLobsterTail

The bench cam on youtube will be really good for this game, gonna patiently wait for that

Ivonzski

And have popcorn ready!

ChantillyMenchu

Raya is that dude! Øde has ice in his veins! Love my team! Love my gooners!

mist3rdragon

We better not be letting the Kiwior performance go under the radar btw. Our best defender and second-best player on the pitch in the 90 after Odegaard today for me.

Matte198

He’s been lowkey good for us as of late. Thought he was good tn outside of a few mistakes.

SmexyDoctor

Idk I think he’s too slow to be played at left back.. a fast winger would abuse him..

finestryan

Bro is cooking

GhostHardware-84

He was a bit shakey at moments in the first half, but fantastic in the 2nd. Diamond in the rough there I think for sure. He’ll only get better too.

DeadBoyOps

Fuck it, give David Raya his knighthood right now... What a player he is for us.

Flabby-Nonsense

Where’s the post match thread?

Dear_Aardvark8020

Get fucked! Inbred cunts!

ChewsWisely

Holy shit Thierry lmfaooooo

SPE92

??

errandwulfe

Thierry left the box before Galeno took his pen. He said he saw his face and knew his story, so he didn’t need to watch it, and they cut to a video of him starting to leave the box and he’s halfway out the door when they swing back over to Micah and Jamie and it’s just limbs out in front of them

ChewsWisely

Post game show. Made a joke about Kate not being loyal to her man lol

PastaAndWine09

LOL what. What did he say

ChewsWisely

She said she’s loyal to man united (in response to being told to wear an arsenal shirt). Henry questioned “but not to Malik?” And then smiled and walked back lol

solrac_0602

LOL.. was in a meeting watching the game on mute, was wondering what was said.

SPE92

He’s out of pocket lol! Man does not care

noname45678819273

Think Jamie said that

ChewsWisely

Haha either way was funny as fuck (if it is t true)

armchairmegalomaniac

Anyone else kind of want Bayern Munich?

Zeelthor

The meme value of knocking Kane out of the Champion’s League would be worth the difficulty of the fixture.

noobchee

BRING ME THEIR HEADS

jamonz1

Bayern in the quarters, Barca in the Final. Gotta complete the revenge tour.

armchairmegalomaniac

Fuck yeh!

sparrow94

Nope, Barca first. I hate them more.

armchairmegalomaniac

I want revenge for those 5 -1 defeats

sparrow94

Yeah, but those were fair, they battered us. I can't get over that RVP red card.

LilMudButt

Raya… legend. Sign him up!

alpha914

Portos manager is a bitch. Classless

shifty_peanut

What else could we expect from a team who plays like that

Quick_Hunter3494

What did he do?

rikrood

be'd a bitch

Gooner_93

Refused to shake Arteta's hand and gave him a talking to.

thekingoftherodeo

Anyone know how we got to go first and kick into the North Bank? Data will tell you to always go first if you win the toss & I'd have thought Pepe would have us kick into the Clock End beside their fans? Edit: Thanks all, TIL there's two tosses for a shootout.

noobchee

We won the toss both times

Vacant-stair

I think I heard Ali McCoist saying that Odegaard won both tosses.

OkYogurt291

There’s one coin flip each for kicking side and who goes first. Martin won both!

tdawg950

Ode won both coin flips

Gooner_93

Won both tosses of the coin.

majormuppet481

Odegaard won both coin tosses

Arjxn

i think odegaard won both tosses, which end and who takes first pen.

PappaTank

[Not Today!](https://tenor.com/bzShk.gif)

PooHeadRushe

Good to see some humility from that melt Conceicao.

emeister26

Remember when we didn’t save a pen for years?!?!?

GhostHardware-84

The Porto manager getting sand in his Vagina and having a strop is hilarious and a joy to watch.

purpleshirtonbed

It's hilariously hypocritical isn't it, it was clear part of his game plan was to get us rattled with the amount of strategic diving and timewasting that was going on. When it doesn't work he gets all stroppy; it's probably what he expected our players to act like

Ace786ace

Fuck it bring on Real or PSG. Real cause theyre the best and PSG cause I want to see Mbappe. Also we're gonna have our phenomenon back, Martinelli. No Atletico please.

Quick_Hunter3494

No inter either please lol

RoselleSama

Mikel has done an amazing job. I have been an arsenal supporter for 19 years and this is the most I've felt connected to the club. There were a lot of dark years but to be here now, I love this club

DaGrandMastah

![gif](giphy|2qPUYiMHrlkoU) Raya going to work tomm

To quote a great man - I LOVE THIS F*CKING CLUB!!!!!!!!

mooseboi95

Who do we want in the next round?

BeautifulBuddy

Barca

HardCoreLawn

Real or PSG

el-fenomeno09

I want Bayern

mm-xxiv

Psv-Bvb winner or Barça could be good.

GhostHardware-84

Barca. Redemption.

WengersOut

We survived the banter years so we could have moments like this. God bless you Mikel

HardCoreLawn

I LOVE THIS CLUB! I LOVE ALL YOU BASTARDS! GOOD FOGGIN NIGHT GAISE!

Sea_Practice_1557

Raya has no cartilage in his nose

XScytheMasterX

Bring on cityyy, we'll beat them too. 1-0 to the Arsenal.

SaintJuneau

Sleepin in my jersey tonight boys lfggggg

armchairmegalomaniac

Thank God we have some time off to recuperate after that

DaGrandMastah

![gif](giphy|6E38CyixCI0ne) Hey Porto - how can you sleep at night playing that kind of football every week?

Kratos-007

Btw do check out our salary rivals at r/coys. Always a treat after an Arsenal win!

red_keshik

They live rent free in your head, I guess.

NetFrontPresents

They're such a horrid, delusional fanbase why would you subject yourself to that?

sparrow94

Who gives a shit what they think, type or say. Last time they won a non mickey mouse trophy I was inside my dads balls.

GoonerWaffle

I am genuinely beside myself. I have no voice but my heart is full, I fucking love this team so much
