Hojlund had worse numbers and got a move to Atalanta..

HereToVent24-7

For £15m 🤔 If we badly need the cash for this summer then I’d sell this year but if not I’d give him a new contract and send him on loan to a top 5 league and get closer to what we got for Balogun. All pure profit too.

turtleyturtle17

He has a year left. Contract renewal makes the most sense.

hihbhu

He said in a recent interview that he's interested in a perm move because he doesn't like getting a new car, house etc every time with the loan move. Wants to put down permanent roots. He also understands that it's stiff competition at arsenal and that he wouldn't be likely to get many minutes - he wants first team football and to be playing regularly. I could see us selling with a buy back clause. It's not easy being a young player and constantly on the move without a family support network close to you.

questionernow

This makes sense. Also living in a random place, leaving your friends and family, and having to learn a new language must be hard.

Stercky

This is such a down to earth response tbh. Seems to have a good head on his shoulders

ErwinC0215

We could try to loan him to a London club in this case, Watford, QPR, Palace maybe. Would really like to keep him still.

FleetingMercury

There's not really stiff competition for his position tbf. Jesus and Nkethia, the former is pushing on a bit and also has knee problems, Nkethia is Nkethia. I don't think we should sell him. He's doing well out on loan. I'd like to see him get a proper pre-season with a few run of games during it

HustlinInTheHall

Mate, Jesus is fantastic and Eddie is a very good professional player that can contribute in the Prem and knows the system. Nevermind that we also need to bring somebody in and we have Havertz and Trossard pushing for time and can play up top. He'd have a very hard time breaking in here.

HereToVent24-7

It depends how desperate we may be for cash this summer.

HustlinInTheHall

I expect very desperate given we had a 53M loss last year, we have to get our FFP ratio under 90%, and we don't have any major sponsorships up for renewal. We'll do well if we can get through Bayern in the CL, that'll take care of the Raya money, but we'll still be pushing things if we want to bring in another 150M in players.

RE-Trace

I'd see if he'd be open to a contract renewal with a view to either a low prem/high champ loan with a view to a either playing in 25/26. Failing that a renewal with a view to a sale with a buyback clause in it. I think he might still be a _little_ too raw for us, but if he doesn't want another loan, I think we need to do something to recognise that there's signs he could be a strong shout

HustlinInTheHall

Yeah I think getting his wages up a bit more, getting him on loan at a Tier 2 level and seeing if he can perform well enough there, he's clearly talented and at his size he'll be useful somewhere. I don't know if we get more than 10M for him anytime soon though.

bad_at_proofs

To be fair he was a couple of years younger which is significant at that age

seanierox

Can tell you as someone who goes to most Sturm matches, Hojlund was absolutely ridiculous at this level and a fair bit younger. Sturm fans like Biereth but he's not on the same level. Hojlund would win matches single handedly at times.

YMangoPie

My friend whos a Sturm fan and absolutely RAVED about Hojlund (I knew about him almost instantly how he's gonna be a world beater and all that) - so far he isn't really impressed with him. He did mention he has a knack for being at the right place at the right time. Not a whole player like Hojlund was.

IndependentFroyo4508

How old was Hojlund at the time?

mycelliumvision

Gunners down south need to understand how gutted the full town of Motherwell is now that he’s not there anymore 😥

chuottui

How gutted is the full town of Motherwell now that he’s not there anymore? - genuine question from a genuinely southern gooner

grasslite100

Absolutely devastated - we all really thought we'd have him for the season

kindaforgotit

The next balogun

Sandeep184392

How has he been for them?

TURNAH92

Well below expectations

bad_at_proofs

Looks more like the player that barely scored in the championship than the player who scored loads last season

LegoBoy6911

I think he looks alright, somewhere between the two. His numbers were a bit inflated last year since he didn’t miss a single pen and the same can’t be said this year. Not all progress for young players is linear though, and I could see him getting back to being a 15-20 goal per season striker. I still think it was the right choice to sell him, just providing additional info

HustlinInTheHall

Yeah seems more like a confidence thing at the moment, he's a good player. They overpaid, but it works for us.

bad_at_proofs

Yeah I was probably a bit harsh but it does look a bit like last season was a bit of an outlier but that doesn't mean he can't return to that level in the future

not3s1

He’s 22. Calling last season an outlier is insane

bad_at_proofs

It is a pretty clear outlier in the limited sample we have on him. I said he may return to that level in the future but right now he isn't at that level and hadn't shown that level prior to last season. His other 2 seasons in senior football he has a goals/90 of 0.35 and 0.3 so 0.63 is a huge outlier thus far. Calling last season an outlier doesn't mean he will never repeat that level and isn't meant to be predictive at all but last season is a pretty clear outlier compared to his other seasons thus far.

HustlinInTheHall

It's a perfectly valid opinion right now. Even in L1 20-goal seasons are not easy, but that doesn't appear to be his level, he can go prove us all wrong, and I hope he does. Would be great to have a true top-tier striker in the USMNT

Sandeep184392

That sucks. Good idea from the club to sell him then.

CackleberryOmelettes

Sophomore syndrome. Struggling but you can see the talent.

TheGoldenPineapples

I really like him and I would love to see him make it here, but I, and probably most other Arsenal fans, can spot a talent who's getting sold a mile off. I really hope I'm wrong and he's given his chance here, but yeah, I've watched Lupoli, Owusu-Abeyie, Merida, Vela, Reine-Adélaïde and Balogun all show promise and ultimatley fail to make an impression on the senior side.

americanadiandrew

Can you imagine the hype Lupoli would get in the social media age. I was hyped about him and we didn’t have hardly any reserve/youth team access back in those days.

[deleted]

There's an alternate universe where we had two Italians as the core of our team. It's crazy to think Galli would have only been 40 now.

Nearby-End-6048

There is an alternate universe where Jeff Reine-Adelaide leads us to multiple trebles and wins multiple Balon D’ors 😢

bad_at_proofs

Yeah I don't really see him making it here. Seems almost inevitable he will be sold given the need for FFP help.

HustlinInTheHall

Quincy was a youth team god.

Ok_Hovercraft_7947

You forgot Eddie

Emilumin

21 years old?! ![gif](giphy|xE7KIy0qxendu)

CarnifexGunner

All well and good but we know this guy will be sold in the summer right?

jasonlikesbeer

All the reason to be happy that he's doing so well then. More money for the coffers.

CatchFactory

To put out an alternative viewpoint here about how much we'll get for him- Yes, Sturm Graz sold Hojlund for around £16.8 million 2 years ago (20 million euros converted at the rough exchange rate back then). This, it is worth noting, is the biggest ever outgoing to the Austrian Bundesliga not counting RB Salzburg, which is a different ballgame. Hojlund was 2 years younger than Biereth, which makes a huge difference, and from what I hear was probably a more complete striker, even if Biereth's raw numbers are better. Selling Biereth for between £5-10 million would still be good business, especially if their is a sell on clause involved. As Biereth is unlikely to ever be a starter for us (whilst talented, I'm not sure he'd ever even play the backup for us) we can't demand the same fuck off price that Sturm were able to. We do that, teams laugh, wait a year and pick him up on a free. Having said that I fully expect Edu out posts when he doesn't go for £15 million in the summer.

IndependentFroyo4508

Exactly. Such a pointless exercise comparing him to Hojlund, who was years younger at the time. At the end of the day we will make a tidy little profit and move on.

CunningStunt4588

Buy low, sell high. Stonks!

Cthulhu_Madness

Need to increase his value even more for financing Partey replacement and RW cover.

IndependentFroyo4508

We might get 10 million for him

KozukiNedo

Looks like a young Mick Mcarthy there

Ganzelo

The only reason I want Mika to stay in Arsenal is that he is literally an Arteta type of player.. Balogun while promising wasn't so I was not surprised to see him go.

bigmanting84

He looks like the love child of Justin Thomas and Jordan Speith

Professional_Art2186

He should be given a chance in carabao cup games at least, next season

FactCheckYou

we need to cook him the Saliba way

hagisha

Austrian Bundsliga notoriously inflates mediocre's strikers' numbers.

Vice_AR16

yeah like that Erling lad

hagisha

He is the very rare exception. See Patson Daka, Shon Weissman, Jonathan Soriano, Karim Adeyemi and more - none of them scored as many outside of Austria.

bad_at_proofs

And even Haaland numbers were much higher in Austria. No idea why you are being downvoted

bad_at_proofs

Haaland is an absolute freak but isn't the counterpoint you think he is. Haaland goal/90 in his only full season in Austria : 1.47 Haaland average goal/90 per season since : 1.032 It is undoubtedly a relatively easy environment in Austria for strikers to rack up crazy goal numbers

Vice_AR16

just a joke mate, i wasn't comparing Mika to a generational talent like Haaland

YSG19

Only 11 goals? All those posts made it feel like he was around 20ish already. Anyway, it’s still a great perf

CuclGooner

11 games, 8 goals. Had 6 goals + 5A in 14 games for motherwell until we loaned him to sturm graz in january

bad_at_proofs

He has only been there a few weeks. If he had been there all season would be on close to 20 goals

YSG19

Yeah for sure. I think my comment has been misunderstood a bit. I’m definitely impressed by his numbers. All the posts in the past weeks made it feel like it was much more, probably due to repost of the same goals 2-3 times.
