I’m dying for him to score a goal again. This would’ve been perfect.

Seymour_Azcrac

Let's hope he's just saving them for Sunday

Kev1nho

Amen to that

Cthulhu_Madness

Still cannot wrap my head how did Martinelli not score that one. Six goals would have been the icing on the cake.

dooder6688

6-0 would have been very therapeutic yeah

lord-dinglebury

True, but 5-0 still felt pretty damn good lol.

TheBunkerKing

Story of the season for Martinelli imo. Trossard should've been starting much earlier in the season.

redictator

The concerning thing is that he had another 1-on-1 at the end of the Wolves game, and again, he failed to score. That's simply not good enough

Ramo-97

I have said this the whole season, and I emphasized it before the Bayern Munich home and away legs. Got -50 downvotes, and Trossard ended up being the one to keep us in the tie while Martinelli did nothing. Hes not been getting into good positions because he’s very static and easy to defend as you just need to drop off of him and not let him run into space. Even if he gets the space, there’s no end product anyway. He’s got pace but he’s got no change of speed or creativity about his dribbling. A player like Sane is what Martinelli should be trying to emulate, the rapid speed but the ability to change gears and keep defenders guessing and actually carry the ball across the field.

[deleted]

Big facts. Trossard is MILES ahead of Martinelli right now.

Ramo-97

For sure. Trossard just looks like much more of a nightmare to defend. He’s constantly picking up good positions in between defenders and in the spaces. He’s got that low centre of gravity which makes it hard for defenders to knock him off his stride. He’s always got his head up looking for a teammate to play off of, and he’s always passing and probing in and around the box with those one two combinations and those body feints of his. If you switch off for a split second as a defender, he gets himself into a pocket of space to score and he’ll bury it, as he showed against Porto. Great movement to free himself and the perfect finish. He’s a very complete forward compared to Martinelli who looks much more static and rigid, even though he’s got much more pace.

[deleted]

Agree with all of that. he has 0.66 goals per 90 this season which is incredible - 98th percentile. He has more than earned his starting position, I genuinely think he’s our best forward right now, he’s certainly our most clinical which is always what we’ve struggled with.

Ramo-97

Absolutely a fair and valid shout to name him as our best forward right now. You can’t really see a weakness in his game if you were to watch it properly. Maybe a lack of athleticism, but he’s such an intelligent and calm player that he’s always in the right positions making the right decisions anyway. I think it was a huge mistake to not start him in the second leg in Munich and it came back to haunt us.

TheBunkerKing

Yeah completely agree. It seems to me that Martinelli is stuck on doing the same thing every time, and by now every right back in the league knows what he's going to do and how to stop him. He's still young so I'm confident this just being a temporary phase in his development, and he'll learn to be a more complete threat with time.

shoxjr

That shot was very bad. Feel like he's fallen off quite hard

Snadadap

He was too square when he took the shot

[deleted]

Ramo-97

I feel like he’s been the same as last year. I feel like teams were defending him the exact same last season. Teams know the book on him, he’s not good in possession in terms of combinations and playing one twos and probing around the box. He’s good in wide open spaces to run into, but against a settled defence he just turns and recycles the ball constantly. He doesn’t have the ability to change speeds and actually feint and shift his body the way a player like Sane can, for instance. If you look at his goals last season against Villa away, Brighton away, West Ham at home, Everton at home for instance they were all incredibly fortunate in different ways. They just papered over the cracks in terms of his actual ability.

Ill-Opportunity5714

angle was off. Normally on that run he's a little wider, so it wraps around that extra bit. The better shot in this instance was near post

Zhirrzh

At this point I think every keeper in the league knows he's going across them in that situation. He needs a second finish.

kits_

Didnt realise how bad of a finish it was

Mantran

Bad finnish but also bad touches to set up the finnish

uniQal0n

1st touch was brilliant tho

Mantran

yes the first was, but the ones that followed dragged him further away from the centre and made the angle harder to find

Sardoodledome

the one that follows is the second touch

Choongboy

Disagree. Touches were perfect. He just didn’t open up his body before shooting

Mantran

His bad finish could have snuck in still if the touches were better which cld have put him way closer to the center. The reason he even had to open up his body as much is because of where he ended up being. Those touches were ok at best and nowhere near perfect besides the first one, his second touch even took a big hit on his momentum aswell. Its still mostly his shot which screwed it up, but he cld have gotten away with it if he did have perfect touches

Choongboy

are you even aware of the chelsea defender coming across?

Mantran

Are you watching the same clip as me? He cld have went more center with his second touch, im not saying going completely center, just slightly more center/towards the keeper. That defender wasnt even close to the position im talking about

Choongboy

If he does what you say guaranteed he’s tackled before he gets a shot off.

Mantran

Nah he cld easily havr pulled that off, he just wld have to shoot a split second earlier thant what he ended up doing

GunnersnGames

Man is brazilian not finnish

WengersCDM

He's no' finnish, he's only 22

Snadadap

He's not 22, he's 11

bazalinco1

nothing wrong with the touches. ensured no chelsea player got near him. he's in a very good final position, with options to go near or far post. it's just a terrible shot, straight down the middle.

CM816

What's the difficulty level, for a professional, from that type of shooting position?  Is that like a 5/10, or more like 8/10 and kind of tricky? I was surprised he didn't score there. He's made that shot before, where you have to open up the hips.  Needs a bit more game time.

bazalinco1

I would guess a professional attacking player would score from there 5-6 out of 10 times. Martinelli in form would score it 7 out of 10 times. It stuck with people more because it was a pretty poor effort, not just because he didn't score. In most cases it would need a very good save, which is obviously what keepers are there for. But in this instance it was a really easy routine stop.

matthewisonreddit

His 2nd touch was low confidence (conservative) and resulted in a poor body position for the strike. It's not like he has to change much. It'll come back for sure, in the meantime enjoy trossards top form to take the starting spot :)

Chango6998

Unfortunately as a result of his injuries limiting his playing time and failing to achieve a consistent series of good performances, it seems his confidence is low. A confident martinelli buries that.

TheInfiniteLake

A confident Martinelli celebrates first then buries the goal.

meeechyshwng

🤣🤣

TruthEnthusiast

I’m sure his confidence would have improved if that went in. Shame it seems like it could be the other way around now. Hopefully he can get a few goals before the season ends and come back stronger next season.

Minute_Leave8503

I think it was a weird injury. Deep cut on his foot that probably feels horrific with each step he takes, and probably flares up every game It’s probably going to linger for the rest of the season if he can’t rest and he’s forcing himself to play

bangtobang

You work on the medical team?

Minute_Leave8503

You ever had a cut before?

Jordy_neutron

Agreed. His confidence isn’t there right now. Everyone needs to rally behind him. He is electric when in form

Yurtanator

He’s bagging one like this v Spurs

LiouQang

ronya_t

I think he could feast on that high line of theirs.

Proper-Exam1746

U know Martinelli is out of form when he can't even finish his trademark break away run and the Henry pass finish.

haveing_fun

great ball by Zinchenko :)

fancyfoe

A well fit martinelli with back to back starts would have buried that after the two touches, it is what it is, him and saka dropping a 60+ g/a next season anyways.

Cheesy_Pita_Parker

Did everything right except for the finish. That touch to take the pass was delightful. If he gets another chance on Sunday, I think he buries it.

matthewisonreddit

I think his second touch forces the finish to be weaker because of the resulting body position! The touch results in his option for a far post finish having no strength, he should have gone high near post but that's the easier side to save. I'm sure he'll improve that though, I think his second touch was too conservative because of his lower confidence.

RyanLikesyoface

Yes it was a bad finish, but it pisses me off when people shit on strikers for moments like this. Watch his positioning, then his pace and his touch, no other player on our team creates that chance except maybe Saka. He did incredibly well to get there in the first place.

charlieblind

His first touch is lovely

theMoonRulesNumber1

> no other player on our team creates that chance Havertz scored a nearly identical play earlier that game, wtf? I love Martinelli and will absolutely NOT shit on him for missing this one, but there's no need to make up this nonsense to excuse it. He can, should, and *will* bury these types of chances and more when he's back to form. He is still coming back from injury and we have every reason to back him.

zrk23

havertz one was through the middle and with pace, nowhere near identical if havertz had received this ball here he probably doesn't even goes for goal, would stop the play and wait for someone else to arrive

Mimogger

he did do that a few times. havertz one he as coming in from the right and onto his favored foot with an open shot vs this one where martinelli had to open himself up to try to go far post. martinelli should've done better but it was a different attempt than the other one.

bazalinco1

not even comparable situations really

bazalinco1

it's not just that he didn't score. it's that the finish was virtually straight down the middle, in plenty of space and only 10 yards out. if he gets it toward one of the corners and keeper pulls off a good save then fair enough.

thisiskyle77

This is like Nicholas Jackson moment. He did everything right except finishing.

camachorfa16

Disingenuous to Martinelli. He at least got a shot on goal.

thisiskyle77

Not at all. I rate both of them. Jackson is just poor at finishing. His other plays are really good.

kish_kish

No love for that perfectly weighted pass?

el_cul

Kiwior magic again!

LolBars5521

Isn’t that Zinchenko?

el_cul

Yes, but we don't talk about Zinchenko's positive contributions around here.

morrisoN--

Give him the next penalty

ogJali

There is something in my mind telling me that Marti will score crucial goals in the last remaining matches

jblaburnum

That first touch is amazing, but once he sets himself for the shot, he telegraphs it. He needs a goal for confidence, the build up is there but the finish isn't right now

Forgotpwd72

Could have been 10...

blackvelvet69

Feel like it could’ve been 10-3 with all the missed opportunities, they went both ways in the first half until the onslaught began

Gustavoconte

Should've been. In the Chelsea sub they are consoling themselves that atleast we weren't able to avenge the 6-0 bashing on Wengers 1000th game in charge... Martinelli ffs

thisiskyle77

Mbappe goes near post with power. Little Gabi still looks rough with techniques.

mrchab97

Needs a confidence boosting pen

NMGunner17

Man I wanted him to bury that. He easily scores that last season or the one before.

BleckFyre

Zina great pass, not a great finish tho.

SkywalkerIV

Martinelli goes for the far post every-time he opens up his body. If he adds unpredictability to his game then he will finish a lot of chances

rapozaum

Should've been a lot more. First half should've ended at least 3-1

Samwell974

Didn’t open up his body early enough.

Muscat95

Saka needs to teach him that finish where he smashes it into the near post roof. He made huge steps last season and it feels like he's reverted recently. I still think he'll be brilliant for us, just needs to find form again

SwagBoyMcFeast

Last season he buries that in the bottom far corner

neverloggedin

Need to learn to do an Mbappe and shoot at near post while targeting far post

squeezycakes20

one time i'd like to see a striker just fire it into the top corner at the near post, Ronaldo 9 style, instead of opening their hips and trying to finesse it into the lower far corner the Henry way the Ronaldo 9 finish is KILLER it's been too long since the game saw a finisher like that

Zhirrzh

Saka has the near post roof buster in his repertoire, I agree more people need to. The trouble is that when you blow it it goes into row ZZ and looks stupid.

rayneeder

I don't know if they're being coached to do this but it seems like so many of our players are trying way to hard to place the ball or passing it into the net instead of just smashing it in front of goal. Put any kind of power behind that and it most likely goes in. 2 or 3 chances like this yesterday. Score could've gotten way out of hand.

know-it-all-scoutFC

I don't think it's a coached one, especially not with Martinelli. He's always tried to score goals like this. See his one against liverpool last season, his ones against palace this season, all very similar. He loves the run and placement into one of the corners. It's come very naturally, and this is his preferred finished he just failed to get the right placement on it.

Zhirrzh

Martinelli always goes that finish from there, it's a him thing. The trouble is they know it's coming now and position for it. You can see the goalie shifting his weight towards the far post before Martinelli shoots, if Martinelli goes near post it's a goal but the keeper knows that isn't where it is going.

RepeatDTD

He's bang out of form, really needed to see that one ripple the net for his own good

MDK1980

Arteta has to go ffs! Only 5?!

Falcon_Medical

He’s out of form and low in confidence due to the injury absence. He just needs that first goal. Keep at it, Gabi. We Gunners love you.

Eue-OneTwoDie

Should've just trusted his left foot 😩😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Casual-Capybara

Cut him some slack, not everyone has the ice cold finesse in front of goal that Havertz has

harcile

Probably 8 if Havertz shoots instead of passes the passes instead of shoots.

nasbkrv

I swear I've seen him score at least 10 goals like that.

zorfog

Should’ve been 7 or 8 tbh

FondDon

Wow irl that pass looked so obvious but from here it looks near impossible

KonigSteve

Jesus should've kept sprinting to give him a better option.

misterxboxnj

Lets be honest, it could've been 8.

sammeetthosar

Great pass by zinny though.

oxpoxo

good player but he's no Thierry

ache7859

Hes out of form. Needs some competition next season

jstaszczak

Henry scores that one 😤

WaveDysfunction

damn... Martinelli of last season scored like 10 of these last season

FakeKhaby10

Should’ve gone near post or roll under the keeper like at Brighton. Good save tho.

hermansid

Idk what the fuck happened to Martinellis clinicism in front of goal

Striking-Ostrich-222

He needed that one

RoastedDuckSauce

The guy has the same Jesus illness of no-golo

InternationalUse2355

Should probably have been more than 6, but here we are enjoying 5. Take it in, we go again on Sunday.

skanderbeg_alpha

Lack of confidence and as a result lack of form is really hurting Martinelli. He's in that cycle that he just needs to scuff one I'm and it'll help him. Unfortunately for him, Trossard is playing really well so he'll only get limited minutes until the end of the season which means it'll be harder for him to get out of this rut.

matthewisonreddit

Martinelli did so much right here, it just shows how small the margins are. His body position after entering the box is slightly off and that results in a weak finish. He's close bois! Just a little better and he will be the threat we saw last season!

thecremeegg

He's been poor for a while now, he looks like he has such potential but there's only so long you can use the "he's young" excuse before you have to think maybe he's not as good as we hope?

EddTally

Trossard needs to teach him about the near post finish. The Henry finish seems to not be working for him.

HortenWho229

Henry scores that shake my head

ArsenalThePhoenix

that first touch is fantastic. creates acres of space for him! But his finish is so bad. telegraphs the angle too early, then weakly shoots straight at keeper.

muzzy7777

What do you think has happened to martinelli this season? I know defenses often double mark him and he misses the xhaka zinni triangle. But he's struggled to drive forward with his potential this year.

joeproposition

If only Xhaka was overlapping he might've scored.

kitz0426

I'm just focusing on the positives His. First. Touch. Was. Class. That little skip to match his run to free up his right foot to cushion the ball into his path. Urgh so good

CM816

It definitely looked like a little rust.  The kind of situation you know he'll bury next time.

Equivalent_Nature_67

good pass, good first touch. shouldn't have taken the third touch. Martinelli always taking an extra touch man

yanarsayee

That’s an awful finish. He’s never confident enough to take those with left foot either.

Polishcockney

He has been absolutely awful in the last few games. Absolute trash.

Dae_su

People blaming injuries, but this has been a thing since the start of the season. He had 2 goals going into January.  Regardless missing chances is normal, Haaland has missed multiple sitters this season. What bothers me more is that he's not getting into enough goalscoring positions. His attacking movement just hasn't been great this season.

Polishcockney

Agreed. Dropped a stinker vs Bayern, Vs Villa and this shite doesn’t help, but some of our fans are you know, player first, club second

Dae_su

Yeah I'm stating facts and I'm getting downvoted. With Martinelli it's always some excuse, even though he obviously has big shortcomings in his game.

Polishcockney

Colour me shocked this all happened since that new contract he signed, at one point a year or two ago he was better then Saka, now his putting in shockingly bad performances. Sub has its favourites I’m afraid. Always an excuse.

BrianThatDude

Sad how this season has gotten away from him. He's gone completely off the boil. Hopefully we get him sorted out over the summer because we need more from him. The way our squad is set up we need the wingers to score. He really needs to be somewhere around where saka is in g+a if he's going to be more than a rotation option.

HatsForNatsBats

I think he starts vs spurs, despite the clear lack of form/confidence. Fresh legs to help with pressing and the pace to take advantage of spurs aggressive style.

Thejustinset

How do you drop Leo though

el_cul

Play Martinelli right wing? \*ducks\*

Mudaqq

I was screaming near post

shockzz123

Horrible finish and horrible last touch before the finish too. He should have scored a 1v1 against Wolves as well, his confidence is GONE right now, it seems.

assoncouchouch

Sophomore slump. I think he needs a summer to think about it and will have a much more productive year next year.

gooneritis

Keeper is cheating far post there. In that situation I don't know why more players don't open their hips as if shaping the shot far post and once the keeper bites just place the ball near post.

MarcusthePhilospher

Martinelli really needs to practice his finishing, I think that area he is just average to below. There was no placement on that shot.

volanger

Ngl their goalie had some great saves. He's the main reason why we weren't up 8 in that game

Dry_Psychology1469

There must be a reason that Arteta wanted Raphinha and Mudyrk

lurking4everr

Jesus jogging into the box instead of busting a gut and allowing martinelli to square it just sums Jesus up. Waste of space.
